The Soup Peddler - Review - North Loop - Austin - The Infatuation

"The Soup Peddler has cornered Austin’s somewhat limited soup market. There are six locations making reliably good bowls of tomato basil, chicken with rice, mulligatawny, bone broth, and various daily specials. You can get them for dinner, but it’s really more of a lunch situation—light, inexpensive, and satisfying. The restaurants tend to be small, like this one in a strip mall on Airport Boulevard, and everything is served in to-go containers. The menu also has a few grilled cheese sandwiches that are nothing special, but we dig The Soup Peddler’s smoothies, some of which have fun musical names like Magic Carpet Ride and Paisley Park. Food Rundown photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL Mulligatawny Seinfeld obsessives can rejoice—this thick Indian soup is the best of The Soup Peddler’s daily lineup. The lentils, potatoes, curry powder, and other ingredients make for the kind of stew you could imagine savoring in a toasty cabin after a long wintry hike. photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL Tomato Basil This is more garlicky and less cream-focused than many tomato soups, so it might not be for everyone. Like us, for example. The flavors are striking at first, but a whole bowl of them can be a bit much. photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL Chicken Soup With Rice A nice, classic option with all the usual suspects—carrots, onions, celery, and a strong dose of pepper. You don’t have to be sick on the couch watching The Price Is Right to appreciate it, but it doesn’t hurt. photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL Cheddar Grilled Cheese Like we said, nothing special. But a grilled cheese doesn't have to be special to get the job done, and The Soup Peddler has several variations, including one with turkey, cilantro pesto, and pepper jack. photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL Tropicalia Smoothie There’s no definitive best smoothie here, but this bright green potion featuring kale, mango, banana, and more is a nice example of The Soup Peddler’s drinks. Just like at JuiceLand, Wonky Blends, or pretty much any smoothie bar on Earth, they’re not exactly cheap—a 24-ounce large can cost as much as $11.25—but you’re in good hands when you want some blended fruit and bee pollen extract." - Matthew Jacobs

Best Austin Restaurant Dishes of 2023, According to Eater Austin Editors | Eater Austin

"When there’s gross weather, I rely on one of my go-to comforting food spots; Soup Peddler. With smoothies, grilled cheese sandwiches, and soups under one roof, it has basically everything I need to stay warm and keep my immune system in tip-top shape for a pretty reasonable price. I usually go for the classic chicken soup with rice, although if you see the mulligatawny soup on the menu, grab it. There are multiple locations throughout Austin, pickup and delivery orders can be placed online; there are typically outdoor dine-in areas. —Erin Russell" - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
I come here all of the time, however after the experience I just had today, I just HAD to leave a review! Devin helped me at the counter and although I have gotten help by other employees before it was nothing like how she assisted me. She went above and beyond to help me with issues I had and was very kind and understanding. I ordered a busy bee and a multigatawyn they both tastes amazing! I will definitely be coming back! Thank you!

Brianna

Google
The green monster smoothie was wonderful and would get 5 stars. The salads were not great and I would give 1 star. The chorizo salad had dressing that was very sweet and the brown rice was either old or undercooked. For the salmon salad, the salmon was over seasoned and was extremely salty. Pretty dissapointing.

Google
Good food great drinks and lovely customer service! Overall great place

Google
I had their mozzarella, pepperoni and tomato basil pesto sandwich-it was simple but great! I love the buttered, toasted bread, and the prices are not bad as well. I also had this curried soup they have and their yogurt peach honey smoothie. Everything was delicious, and the environment and people are very nice. My parents love this place too! Would definitely go back.

Google
Husband got teeth pulled, the tomato basil soup and grilled cheese was good. Kind of weird I’m forced to get gluten free bread. The employees were nice but seemed overworked/out of breath and sweaty making me think they need more people.

Google
I usually love this place and I am a regular customer. The staff are wonderful and typically the food is on point. However I’m really disappointed by follow through by their administrators over a screw up on their part. I came in a few weeks ago for a salmon brassica salad which I get pretty regularly. It usually come with a bright lemon dressing but when I sat down to eat my meal that is not what I got. Instead I got a dull mustard-like dressing and I panicked. I feared they had changed their dressing offerings and I’d have to find a new favorite salad for my regular lunch rotation. When I reached out on Facebook they assured me it was a mistake. That it was a mixup between their salad dressings and in the future I’d see the lemon dressing again. They also offered to make things right by sending me a gift card via email to reimburse me for the salad. I never received the gift card and though I’ve followed up they have been unresponsive. I am disappointed because this is one of my favorite lunch spots. I’ve been going to other restaurants for my salads and soup lately instead. Cava has pretty great salad options.

Google
Didn’t get my servers name but he was amazing the food was amazing and it was a chill spot to relax and enjoy a good meal. I’ll be back next time I’m in town for sure

Google
Phenomenal. Had serious fomo about not ordering my own grilled cheese. Definitely not wasting my money on Smoothie King after finding this place. Ridiculously long list of add-ons and supplements.

Yelp
This unassuming Soup Peddler location is tucked away in a strip mall on Airport, next to the Omelettry. Plenty of parking. The setup seems to be similar to other soup peddlers with seating: metallic tabletops that always seem to be clean, dedicated recycling and composting bins, a high countertop divider, with an ordering kiosk near the front, and some coolers and fridges, as well as a heating rack to keep pickup orders warm. Kitchen and smoothie room in the back. The staff running this place are quite nice. The choice of artwork adorning the walls appears to be different from other Soup Peddlers. What's good about Soup Peddler? Despite their name, I prefer their smoothies over their soups. Their soups are prepared offsite and delivered in the morning to all Soup Peddler locations. Thus, no location is aware or can predict what will be on their menu for soup specials each day through the week. However, other than their daily specials, they usually have a set soup menu. Their soups are served in a paper cup, and you can get crackers and oyster crackers with them. They also offer grilled cheese sandwiches. Those sandwiches are, well, pretty small and simple. I've had their Apple-Muenster Grilled Cheese, no complaints. Don't expect to be filled up on that though. Again, smoothies are where it's at. They offer monthly smoothie specials, discounted daily smoothie specials, and staff favorite creations. Of course, you can always create and customize your own. I tend to get their matcha, turmeric, or banana and nut based smoothies. Any sweetness is obtained from their fruits used, but sometimes date syrup is used as an ingredient. Anyways, smoothies are yum, and that's why I keep coming back.

Yelp
For a place called the Soup Peddler, they are constantly "out of stock" of majority of the soups listed on their menu.
google avatar

Yelp
Their smoothie is definitely a mood booster! I have tried their Golden Ticket, Dancing Bear and Nina Simone. I love the little kick cayenne pepper adds to Dancing Bear and the eucalyptus flavor that the cardamom brings into Golden Ticket, so I would recommend trying these two if you are looking for something sweet and fun to drink. The juice bar decor is also captivating! I would literally recommend anyone who enjoys unfettered imagination from art come visit this place and try out a smoothie which sounds interesting to them.

Yelp
I love this place. Grilled cheese, yum. Soups, always great. Smoothies, delish. Waitstaff friendly and accommodating.

Yelp
Not sure what all the hype is about. Especially, since it was a major disappointment for us. Ordered 4 different soups for delivery. Was crossing my fingers since they use doordash, which is the worst delivery service for me in the Austin, TX area. As expected, they messed up the order. Luckily, all the soups were fine, but I asked for bread, not crackers. And guess what I got? Yep, crackers. No big deal, but I really like bread with my soup, and they gave that option. Why give the bread option, if you are just going to throw crackers in a bag instead of bread as requested? ANSWER: It is cheaper for them, and since it is delivery it is not like we are going to go back and complain and ask for our bread, like we would if we were ordering at the counter. Also, since this was first time ordering, I not only wanted to taste the soups, but the bread as well. Every one knows what crackers taste like. The soups were nothing special except for maybe the Veggie Gumbo. In addition to that, we ordered the chicken with rice, Chicken Pozole Verde, and the Mulligatawny. Check the menu for descriptions as I don't want to spend too much time on this. I've had better chicken and rice from a can of Progresso soup. The Pozole Verde was Ok, but my wife is from Mexico, and she said this is not even close to Pozole. LOL! Next time we will just order couple cans from Amazon Fresh. It will be cheaper and taste better, and they will deliver our bread as asked.

Yelp
I only tried the smoothie but it was amazing! So many options to choose from, but I went with the classic PB banana. So refreshing. The worker was really nice and gave recommendations. I also tried the "shot the the heart" drink. It was spicy, but I did it for #health. The inside is decorated with signs and little butterflies. It's a casual environment. This location is in a shopping plaza so there's plenty of parking.

Yelp
Such a fun little spot On point with the grill cheeses ,.. cheese pull did not disappoint Juices pretty tasty and u can even make ur own Smoothies amazing !!!!!! Fresh fresh fresh Location easy to find Lots of parking Customer great!!! I sat inside and I don't know the gentleman's name but hearing him be so companionate and friendly to everyone n elderly (elderly have a soft spot in my heart n a lot of ppl are not patient so I always make it a point to call out the places tht are) It was just a great thing to see !! Definitely would recommend this place on customer service alone

Yelp
A few things to know before you go: The food is all premade at another location. The grilled cheeses are a single slice of cheese between two huge pieces of bread. Want another slice? Sorry, according to the employees "it wouldn't be worth the labor of offering extra cheese". Soups are great. The most disappointing grilled cheeses ever. Literally the easiest menu item cannot be altered. Why not just throw a second slice on there and charge a little more if "it's just too inconvenient" to add it? Doesn't make sense at all.

Ese E.

Yelp
So cute! Simple menu. Affordable prices. We got the grilled cheese with turkey, spinach and pepper jack.

Jillian O.

Yelp
Worst tomato basil soup ever. It tastes like watered down marinara sauce. I didn't try any other soup, they could be good. Idk. Great service, wish they would've warned me about how horrible that tomato soup was gonna be.

Bonnie R.

Yelp
Staff are pleasant, smoothies are great. Not too expensive, service is quick and food is fresh.
google avatar

Tracey Z.

Yelp
I really love the huge variety of options that they have here, especially appreciate how healthy everything is! It was so hard to pick a smoothie because they all sounded amazing. I finally settled on Business Time (also I love how each smoothie has a cute name because it adds so much cute charm and character) because I'll get anything with coffee! It definitely did not disappoint! There were little crunchy bits of ground up coffee beans that added texture to the creamy smoothie! The only thing is it is very pricey, $9 for a smoothie is crazy.

Yelp
Came for the Gluten Free Options on their window and menu as my Wife has Celiac but was only able to order the soup. They only have one Sandwich option that is GF and when asked if it was on the same grill as the other bread they said yes so that pretty much eliminates our option. Asked if there was a chance they could clean the grill and was told "we could but it's only one grill" basically it's not worth the work was the attitude we got. I understand it is a pain in the butt to accommodate that but please don't praise yourself as GF options and not truly want to deal with Celiac or have a separate area to try and be safer. A better attitude and I probably wouldn't even have put this review but I think workers need to understand GF isn't always a choice but a medical conditions and making us feel like a pain in the ass isn't a good business practice. Disappointed and having to find a place to eat that actually cares.

Yelp
Casual Fresh Juice, Smoothie, Soup, and Grilled Cheese joint. I mean how could you go wrong with those choices? Everything is handmade from scratch, fresh, and locally sourced. 5 tables, so it's more of a to-go place. No outdoor tables. Pepperoni, sun dried tomato pesto & mozzarella grilled cheese - very good. Tomato basil soup - excellent! Afternoon Delight juice "concoction" - excellent Would definitely come back when I'm in this area!
google avatar

Krista T.

Yelp
Very quick and can make changes to juices and smoothies. I'll be back to try the soup. Smoothie was delicious.
google avatar

Jonaya P.

Yelp
Not sure if I had it from this location because it was on door dash lol but I had it, nonetheless. I ordered the shot to the heart, the cure, and pulp friction and woooo boyyyy that shot to the heart was a shot indeed! & I love it. Quality juice. Definitely would order here again.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
this place has such good food and service. Loved the green detox soup and the bone broth soup. Thank you!!!
google avatar

Jeremy K.

Yelp
Really tasty soups, grilled cheese and smoothies. I usually get the smoothie of the day there. Lots of options of basically anything on the menu. Popular spot, which they would expand for more seating tho.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. When life gives you a hangover, you make a trip to the Soup Peddler. I cannot emphasize it enough- that gluten free grilled cheese singlehandedly carried my hungover self through the work day. Not to mention, the peanut butter banana smoothie gave me the courage I needed to walk back through the clinic doors after lunch. And that was just an entry level smoothie, if I got an upper echelon smoothie I would have literally changed the world that day. You heard it here first. Go to soup peddler. PS @ soup peddler will you pleeeease let me sub gf bread onto the apple and muenster? I'm literally begging.
google avatar

Tre D.

Yelp
This was my first time here, the service was great the employees are nice and patient. The food came out in a timely manner and was very very delicious. The restaurant itself has good ambiance and not overly crowded. I would recommend it and will come back myself soon.
google avatar

Alex Z.

Yelp
My friend recently got their wisdom teeth taken out so this was a great choice for something they could eat. We got everything to go. I ordered the tomato basil soup which was very delicious and soothing for the soul. You are given the option of crackers or bread to go with the soup, but the server was nice enough to give us both. My friends also ordered the chicken soup which was also said to be very good. Prices were a bit high for soup, but I guess that's just inflation these days. Definitely going to come back on a day I want to warm up with some soup
google avatar

Martha P.

Yelp
The best when feeling under the weather. Friend got me some goodies when I had covid and it was heaven
google avatar

Pat S.

Yelp
Great food here and fresh made too. Nice staff. They have so much more than soup. Smoothies, sandwiches, juice and more. They have clever names for menu items too. Get a Brian Eno or a Dwayne Almond. Perfect place for quick lunch and snacks.
google avatar

Courtney K.

Yelp
Got an afternoon delight and Moonage juices - were both delicious and refreshing. The sweeter one of the two was the the moonage juice - personally my fav! The afternoon delight was good, could taste the beets a bit more than my personal preference but was still good.
google avatar

Mandy W.

Yelp
Soup was realllly good even though I honestly just use the tomato soup as a dip for my grilled cheese it is one I actually ate after I was done with my sandwich! I pre-ordered and then got stuck at work and was 45 minutes late picking my food up.... They made me a new sandwich at no charge even though that was COMPLETELY my fault. Definitely will be back! I only decided to order from here because my stomach was upset and I really didn't want to eat garbage and this was perfect!
google avatar

Alexander C.

Yelp
First off, they're playing Grimes when we walk in. green flag!!! Second, we got two soups for ~$14 . In Austin, that's crazy! Third, it was ready in like a minute. Fourth, they gave us hella bread, crackers, & croutons. I honestly loved it for the price point. slayyyyy soup peddler

D V.

Yelp
Average soups (the tomato basil was downright bad) served in paper cups along with greasy tasteless sandwiches. You take care of fetching water and cutlery and final cleanup. The biz still encourages you to leave an 18% minimum tip. I am appalled.
google avatar

Meagan C.

Yelp
Stopped by while in town for ACL and needed a refreshing drink! I forgot the name but I got a green juice that had pineapple in it and it was delicious! The employee at the register was patient and helped me figure out which drink to pick. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Fiona W.

Yelp
Good smoothies! The sandwich I got, the pesto turkey, was also very tasty! Perfect little spot for grabbing a smoothie or juice or even a quick snack!
google avatar

Christina V.

Yelp
After getting off a flight, I was starving but it was that awkward time between lunch and dinner. My friend brought me to The Soup Peddler and I banana peanut butter smoothie with whey protein. I've never had rice milk in a smoothie before and it was great! I'm allergic to nuts and I absolutely abhor oat milk, so milk alternatives are usually a no go for me. Rice milk added a great creaminess and it was so tasty! The shop was super clean and the staff was willing to answer any questions. I would happily return!
google avatar

Miguel R.

Yelp
I love this place. Good place for quick bite of delicious food! Tomato Basil Soup and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches made right.
google avatar

Selah R.

Yelp
Showed up at 8:45 (they close at 9). I was craving one of their juices, but when I tried to order, the (very sweet and apologetic) employee at the register told me that they already broken apart the juicer for the night. I was surprised because I wasn't the only customer in there. Obviously not the end of the world and I'm not one to gripe, but what's the point of being open if you can't produce the goods you're offering? Disappointing but will return again....with ample time.
google avatar

Caroline F.

Yelp
The Soup Peddler food was really warm and tasty and it hit the spot because I was so hungry. I shared 3 soups and 2 juices and it was enough food for the both of us, the meal was so filling. We got the veggie chili, green detox broth and mulligatawny which were all delicious. The veggie chili was my favorite. We also got flotsam and jetsam and seven veggie army juice, totally satisfying. I do have to say, the service was subpar. The food took a long time to get, and the tables in the restaurant were not clean. Yet, I would come back for sure because it is a cute, cozy place to study or read. There are a lot of locations around Austin which is so awesome!
google avatar

Rebekah C.

Yelp
The food, which includes a variety of grilled cheese sandwiches, is mediocre. Their drinks are great though. The earth shaker is my favorite so far. It's a very quick place to grab a bite or drink, they have grabs and go salads and other food, but tbh didn't look all that impressive on the food side, also the food portions are small. I'd come here for their smoothies.
google avatar

T H.

Yelp
Used to Love this place. The put 1 slice of Turkey on a sandwich and there's just lack ingredients with inflated prices during inflation but not the same quality or quantity, so disappointed. I used to brag about this place to Others.
google avatar

Samantha Y.

Yelp
Great variety of non-vegetarian and vegetarian soups! They have complimentary crackers and vegan bread to go with the soup too. And the soup containers and lids are compostable :)
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
Had the senate bean with a regular grilled cheese. Supper yummy. Staff gave excellent customer service. Lots of different things to try. Want to try everything!
google avatar

Stacie H.

Yelp
Love this spot- casual, good eats and friendly service! The green apple muenster grilled cheese is my go-to order. It's melty, crunchy and satisfying! There are so many tasty smoothies and soups to try and I'm definitely making a dent in the menu. Beyond the food/drinks, the staff has always been so welcoming! Bonus points for their rewards system.
google avatar

Ann Marie K.

Yelp
Writing this review from Chicago as I miss The Soup Peddler from the days we lived in Austin. The Green Detox soup was my absolutely fave and I think about this soup an awful lot. Great little place for a grab and go meal. Customer service was always nice and the food is fresh. Parking is easily accessible in the shared strip mall lot.
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
Delicious, healthy food at a reasonable price... I shouldn't have overlooked The Soup Peddler for as long as I have. I'll be back, especially for their grilled cheese with muenster & green apple on sourdough. (OK, so this might not be their most healthy option but alongside a small smoothie it makes a whole meal that costs nearly the same as just a smoothie at some other local shops.)

Leslie L.

Yelp
I got chicken tortilla soup today and not 1 piece of chicken. it was mostly cabbage. very disappointed.
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
Carrot ginger and mulligatawny soups are both stellar. Very tasty and very filling. Will have to come back and try some of the others.
google avatar

Kye F.

Yelp
I love soup peddler! I'd call myself somewhat of a regular at this point. My guy and me get our smoothies 2-3x a week. Also a big fan of the soups and sammies. I love the mulligatawny personally. Smoothie wise, most of the time we get the peanut butter and banana and then add cacao. Sometimes I change it up and get something different. But that's my top choice! Sometimes, the service hasn't been the best for me personally. :/ Which is a bummer! Like if you are trying to ask a question about something or are unsure about something, it feels uncomfortable with certain workers (definitely not most of them, almost all of them are amazing and I love them!). So that's why I wouldn't give 5 stars. Tbh soup peddler is one of my fav places for a healthy lunch and I'd say a lot of people in Austin feel the same way :)
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
Enjoyed the Magic Carpet Ride Smoothie (that they happily made for me when I walked in just a few minutes before closing). I am eight months pregnant and NEEDED A SMOOTHIE! It's the little things like this that business do that mean the most. Thank you Soup Peddler team! Awesome customer service
google avatar

JustOnce F.

Yelp
Wanted to try a different juice place near me so I ordered a large Sun Ra green juice here. Took 40mins for a pickup order and when I got there they gave me a medium instead but still charged me for a large and it tasted entirely of celery juice, maybe and a hint of pineapple juice in there. So scammed on the size and used the cheapest ingredients to fill it, plus they are slow. Back to juice land. Oh well.
google avatar

Jazel M.

Yelp
just ok.. got my friend's smoothie order wrong :( we were in a hurry and she is like the sweetest person ever so didnt tell them to remake it (but they did offer). wanted to sit down, but the tables aren't set for guests yet. wanted big salads, but they only had prepackaged ones. not that they looked bad, but I guess we were hoping to order fresh. the smoothies were good but it did take a while even tho there was only one person in front of us. maybe they were short staffed like the rest of Austin lol. probably won't go back to this location.
google avatar

Kayla M.

Yelp
I started a new job back in October and I had been looking for the perfect lunch spot. This is definitely it. Not only is everything delicious but it is also very affordable and quick. All of their employees are very kind and patient and helpful. I have been going in probably 1-2 times a week recently and I always like to get something different but I would have to say my favorite is the tomato basil soup with a grilled cheese or the Texas chill. They don't always have the Texas chilli so definitely order it if you have the chance. I have also tried the veggie chilli and it was delicious! I am a big meat eater and was pleasantly surprised. The only suggestion I would make is the water cup situation and the seating is scarce so I wouldn't suggest a very large group unless you are grabbing a cup to go. Keep up the good soup!
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
It's called the Soup Peddler, but honestly I went for the drinks! The soup was good, just your average tomato soup. Same idea with the grilled cheeses; just a good old fashioned grilled cheese. Nothing special about the food but it definitely does the job. Now the smoothies on the other hand....honestly really good. I got the mango and oj smoothie(highly recommend). Staff were friendly, place was clean. Would visit again on a rainy afternoon.
google avatar

Maricela C.

Yelp
It's 2021 and I still love this place! Excellent food and smoothies and juices. I have yet to try something i don't like from here. My favorite right now is voltron and the tortilla soup. Great combo
