Try the Bombay Sapphire Sparkling Lemon at These 10 New Jersey Bars | Eater

"If you like Texas for more than just barbecue (but that too), this is your watering hole. Texan comforts spanning the state — from gulf po’ boys to Frito walking tacos to southwestern fajitas — fill the menu, amid enough games and fun to convince you to stay a while. Even so, it’s the raucous music rattling sturdy decor that puts some juke in this joint. You’re here for three things: a Bombay Sapphire Sparkling Lemon, a good time, and Lone Star cuisine. With the first and last, the middle is guaranteed. But just as a tip: get Willie’s cheesesteak — it’s brisket by way of Philly." - Brendan McGinley

i remember coming here a few months ago and enjoying the experience. i specifically wanted some loaded fries but i was told they only serve it during certain times, which makes no sense to me. the mac and cheese was bland but the server did ask if i wanted hot sauce with it (which is weird…). the chicken in the salad was very rubbery. very chewy and gross. i will say that the servers were really nice. i don’t think i’ll be coming back here which is a shame because i used to enjoy the place!

I really wanted to like South House. The sign out front clearly stated happy hour from 4 to 7 PM Tuesday through Friday. My partner and I decided to dine there because of that and the fact that it was quiet. We figured it would be a nice, easy evening. We asked if we could sit outside since the interior was empty and we were told yes without any indication that doing so would change the happy hour terms. I just wanted wings and a glass of wine so we ordered without diving into the menu. To our surprise, when the check came, our six dollar happy hour wines had jumped to sixteen dollars each. The explanation was that hidden in the menu it says happy hour only applies to indoor or high-top seating. Nothing on the sign outside reflects that restriction. When we brought this up the manager declined to honor the happy hour price despite the misleading signage and the fact that no one mentioned any limitations when we asked to sit outside. That kind of bait and switch tactic left a bad taste in what could have been a casual and enjoyable meal. Unfortunately I understand now why the place is so empty during the week.

One week after my last visit, I went to South House at 149 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, NJ with 2 good friends because I really love this restaurant. Again, the brunch choices were varied and the 3 dishes we chose were heavenly. We were again fortunate to have exemplary server Giuseppe, as well as personable hostess Gianna and server Erica. South House is my go-to eatery in downtown Jersey City.

The atmosphere was amazing and the server was very attentive! The food I was not interested with. The music was great! I would come back for the music and drinks! The mojito was really good.

Brisket plate was amazing! So much food but the sides were better than the main. Mac and cheese was so good! Creamed spinach really put the meal together! Brisket could have been a bit juicier, but i still enjoyed it

Google
Overall 3.5 for me. Atmosphere and service was a 5. Food for me was a 2.5 for what I had. I ordered the BBQ platter. It looked fantastic. However, three out of the four items were dry. It comes with ribs, brisket, kielbasa, and pulled pork. It comes with a side of potato salad, coleslaw, pickles, pickled onions and jalapeños. The coleslaw tasted like straight cabbage Without any other flavors. The brisket and pulled pork were very dry. The ribs were a little chewy. The kielbasa was really good and the best meat on the tray. The potato salad was also fantastic. The pickles came from a jar and nothing to comment about as they were not housemaid pickles. The atmosphere and service were so good that I would go back again to try a different item however, their barbecue planner is not worth the money. You will see in a picture that I uploaded that a piece of the brisket stands straight up and down on the fork as opposed to flopping overdue to how overcooked it is. If you do like well done me and never had real barbecue before then maybe you might be OK with this dish.

Been coming to South House for a while, either for drinks, snacks, dancing or dinner. Looks like they changed and consolidated the menu and it’s still delicious. I’ll miss the fried pickles but the wings and the shrimp croquettes had lots of flavor. The bbq platter and skirt steak were very tender and tasty, the fries are super crispy and flavorful, the rhubarb dessert is awesome balance. Best part was the service, the team as a whole and Dilson in particular. Kind, attentive, understanding, patience, overall - the reason why you don’t eat at home

My boyfriend and I came here for brunch on a Sunday and it was great. Not too busy/loud, great service and the food (shoutout to the short rib grilled cheese) was fantastic. Good drink deals until 3pm!

Yelp
No shade, the shrimp and grits used to taste better. I moved away from Jersey in 2022 and just moved back in 2025 and this place used to have a really good shrimp and grits. I feel like there's too much in the grits now. They got pork, shrimp, and mushroom in there... I'm not mad at the mushrooms tho. My bias, i don't eat pork usually. But it's still just too much and not enough grit. Like where are the grits??? It's still good though so let me not drag it. The service was really good. My server was the cutest individual. The Latine guy who was like manager or something noticed i was looking lost so he helped me get seated and get a server going. I also love the ambiance here. It's so Jersey! They're bumping house music. Dada Dee dada dow! Hellooooo!!! But good vibes all around!

Yelp
I don't get it Food was meh-small portion of dry meat with overly cooked Mac and cheese Staff-strange. Like a free for all- Bartender was good but they really need more than one on- especially with all the over the top drinks they hav to make Manager seemed hands on yet not willing to lift a finger to help- More dictatorship like Music blaring staff dancing and singing in their own world- little care to those around them Are you a club? A bbq? A Nola inspired bistro? What are you?!? Oh- One menu they give you says DAILY happy hour yet bartender says no- Not daily WTH???

Yelp
(Dined 04/18/2025 FR @ 8:00pm): This "house" was serving up some mean Southern food along with drinks and beats! In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes and things to do throughout Jersey City and specifically the Heights, our large party moved from nearby Barcade to South House for dinner, drinks, and a DJ set from a colleague. South House has been serving up a blend of Southern hospitality and rock-and-roll energy since 2015 with a laid-back rustic vibe where people feel right at home while rubbing elbows with strangers. Would our time at this house go south or be elevated to cap our evening!? PURCHASE Athletic Brewing Co. Run Wild IPA Non-Alcoholic Beer 0.5% ABV 12floz Can ($7.00): Rich amber color, slight citrus hoppy watery aroma, flavor and aftertaste, light body, and a clean finish. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=WYpHQKxBt8vBiS4a1uijug Mac & Cheese ($12.00): A ton of chewy elbow pasta covered in a creamy four-cheese sauce topped with crispy herb crust and scallions, this gooeyness of near perfection (no bacon due to Lent) was a full meal as steam escaped one scoop at a time. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=PADnIkwMKVcZZ3MRxD66fw Salmon Sandwich w/Sweet Potato Fries ($17.00): A thick piece of fish topped with mixed greens, tomato slices, an avocado crema, feta cheese, and a citrusy dressing between toasted wheat bread, this was a lovingly flavorful sammie that nearly filled me up! Operations Fee 3.00% ($2.58): Used to help offset increasing costs... SERVICE Our party of ten had reservations, so while we waited for our tables to be ready, we huddled around the busy bar and ordered drinks which came out quickly as our table was now ready. Our servers kicked arse, where on top of everything, the food arrived quickly, we were constantly checked on, and empties were cleared away. The staff were da bomb - thanks! PARKING (Street; N/A this instance) This was an easy 25-minute walk from my friend's place. Otherwise, this was on a pedestrian-only section of town, but there appeared to be random spots (no known private lot) off the main drag of Newark Ave. and all surrounding roads, or best to utilize the very good public transportation light rail - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A high-ceiling brick-walled structure with an open spacious bar area, a few cramped dining areas, and a separate downstairs rec room, while an explicit display of rock music love https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=2d9Qy_YrwoutgDLrC1eCXw charmed the pants off of me! Decent natural lighting came through the tinted large windows and doors while low-lit electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were several TVs at the bar area while loud rock music blared in the background and drowned out everything else. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops... if it weren't so cold this time. OVERALL I'd return to South House for its chill vibe, very good food albeit kind of pricey, and wonderful service. They also had a weekday happy hour (4pm-7pm) and other promotional nights! And, I always loved supporting small businesses whenever possible. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $111.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Yelp
Sad that the menu changed and you can only order from the brunch menu weekend mornings. At least the new items we tried were delicious. Wish the coffee tasted better but that's new.

Yelp
I went to my favorite eatery "South House" at 149 Newark Avenue in downtown Jersey City, Nj on Saturday with my lovely friends and we thoroughly enjoyed the total experience. The brunch meals and drinks were scrumptious and we loved them. The restaurant is clean, expansive and the walls are decorated with exceptional art and photos. The wait staff of friendly server Giuseppe, hostess Gianna, super chef Jose, and a shoutout to manager Michael Cardone for assembling such a great team.

Yelp
Always down to try something new and why not as it's my first time in Jersey! South House was recommended and on my way I went. Set a reservation because they do fill up quickly and I came with a large party. The atmosphere and decor is music themed. They honor and celebrate great music legends. Even their menu is a vinyl that opens up with their menu items. We tried the fried green tomatoes as a group and I was not a fan. The tomato still felt like it could've ripen a bit more. The fried skin did not stay on; slid right off and the sauce didn't pair well. I personally chosen the spicy fried chicken meal as my entree. With it, I paired the Mac and cheese with collard greens. The food arrived fairly quickly and it was quite hot. The presentation and food portion is nice but still a bit on the pricer side for comfort food. The honey spicy sauce on the fried chicken didn't sit well for me. The meal came with three pieces of meat but the leg and thigh were the juiciest. The breast was a bit drier but the crispy skin made up for it. The Mac and cheese were overly cheesy. As if they selected the wrong cheeses. I felt I had to have a sip of water with each bit. If you're lactose... flee! The collard greens were alright but just fell flat. At one point my bits began to taste of just vinegar. I guess I'm bias because southern food is my culture so I know the way it's supposed to taste and when other additions are added for flare. For dessert I tried the jalapeño cornbread & ice cream dish as well as the chocolate chip bread pudding. The cornbread and ice cream dish mesh together. The flavors sat on top of one another. Also the cornbread could stand to have fresh peppers and sweet corn bits in it. Additionally it was too crumbly. The bread pudding was quite delicious but they over did it with the chocolate chips. Overall, this was a nice suggestion but I would only be inclined to return for the appetizers. I'd want to try the deviled eggs and wings.

Yelp
When I tell you I loved this place, I mean it from the bottom of my heart! Top to bottom, there wasn't a thing I didn't like but my FAVORITE was our bartender! He didn't hover but was on it. At one point, I was fussing with my eyes (because I dread smudged mascara) and he leaned in, and in a whisper, asked if I was ok because I think he thought I might've been arguing with my date. I LOVE that he cared enough. In any case, the music was 90s R&B with a 2025 remix. Infinity stars for that! The food was good. Four stars. The fries were nicely flavored and not just some cut up potatoes. The decor was eclectic Southern romantic. Epic and gritty. Like Gone With The Wind meshed with True Blood. Just fantastic. I woulda never thought I was in a bar in Downtown Jersey City.

Yelp
South house is always busy and bustling, whether it be nightlight (great downstairs area with a bar, shuffleboard, pool, foosball, etc), or for Brunch! Was able to be seated for Saturday morning brunch with no wait at the bar - They have a great mimosa deal for $3 mimosas. The brisket Benedict was great - Delicious brisket and flavorful potato side.

Yelp
This was a really cute spot with Great ambiance located in downtown Jersey City. They have a very large menu selection and service was decent. They weren't super busy when we arrived, but a lot of staff standing around . I believe it was the manager who was making rounds just to check on customers. We didn't wait too long for our food to come out. My husband ordered the steak with chimichurri sauce. I ordered a wedge salad with slice of pork belly, which was pretty good, but prices were a bit much considering the serving size all in all the food tasted pretty decent. Some items were a tad salty. I also order empanadas which were pretty good. Our waitress wasn't that attentive considering they weren't that busy but I would definitely recommend giving it a try as they do have some pretty tasty menu items.

Yelp
I was in Jersey City recently with my girlfriend as we walked by this place and I was like damn what a cute place let's grab a drink babe. She agreed. It was pretty much empty and it was only around 10:30 pm. I wonder why? I'd say it's because the bartenders and servers aren't good. Well that's what I saw with my own two eyes at least. We walked in and sat at the bar and there was only three other people sitting there but the bartenders were both at the end of bar on their phones and didn't pay no attention to us even though they both looked at us. I told my girlfriend let's get out of here after about 5 minutes of waiting. I hate places like this that can't even acknowledge you when you walk in let alone let you sit there when the place is empty. So as we were about to get up and leave the bartender finally got off his social media app or whatever he was doing and decided to pay his patrons some attention, but by this time he already lost my business. We did order a couple beers and drank them and headed on our way shortly afterwards. It's a shame too because this place is beautiful and has tons of potential but without the right employees places like this fall faster than a lead boat in the sea. The only reason they get one star is because the place is beautifully done. I do not recommend this place whatsoever. Also, whoever manages this place needs to definitely have a meeting with all of their employees and make sure the next time someone comes in when the place is empty that they welcome them and are not on their cell phones. So gross! Good luck!

Kay S.

Yelp
Great decor and setting. But the place has no soul. The staff are not particularly rude, but they don't have any life or enthusiasm, they look like they're just making a living. When people spend money at a joint, they are there to feel happy, not actually to sit down and drink and go their way.

Yelp
Love it here! Mashed potatoes and green beans are elite. Food comes quickly and hot. Have Vinny make you a drink, he's the best. Downstairs has pool and shuffleboard. Bathrooms are so clean.

Yelp
Food was good, service wasn't slow, and location is pretty nice a very short walk from grove st station. They have outdoor sitting, and they allow larger parties to stand by the bar area (pretty nice for after-work stuff for example) Their bbq platter was a bit disappointing, probably because they themselves aren't doing the grilling and it shows. They do have a wide assortment of appetizers that are nice if you want any to order a bunch of stuff for the table and just share.

Yelp
I went for brunch and the food was delicious! The drinks were very tasty! They had live music which set the vibe . The decor / ambiance is so cute and quaint. The service was on point as the server made recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
I've been coming here since I moved to JC for cocktails and the games in the basement! I just tried the food for the first time, recently. The fries were seasoned and delicious. The vegetarian meal options are limited, as usual with most places around. The cocktails are always on point, even if pricey. Good place for an American/southern meal, finger food, and great drinks. I was there on a busy night, and the bar service was pretty decently paced. The games in the basement are a good place to make some friends, or visit with your friends.

Yelp
I try out South House about one a year, in hopes of a better experience but it tends to be a mixed bag. Pluses: - Service is usually fairly quick, though it can range from good to meh. We had a really friendly waiter on our most recent visit. - I've never seen it so crowded that you can't get a table. - Compared to other restaurants in the area, not a bad amount of veg options (nothing if you've vegan though, sorry!) - Outdoor seating is available in warmer months. Neutral to negatives: - Veg food ranges from decent to not great. I do recommend the spicy fried pickles however. I've enjoyed them every time. The veggie burger isn't bad but it does fall apart easily. That being said, THANK YOU South House for still keeping a veggie patty on the menu, and not switching to Beyond or Impossible. That's my biggest pet peeve - those options are made for people who eat or used to eat meat, not for people who are vegetarians. So I'll always appreciate having that option. - Drinks are eh, which is kind of sad. Also the server didn't seem to have much knowledge of them, so maybe some better training on that front. - As mentioned above, service can be hit or miss. I'll see how it goes again in 2025!

Yelp
First time here. The service is amazing and fast! The waitress was super responsive and filled us in on some house favorites. I got the fried chicken which was cooked perfectly! Hubby got the smoked stack burger, he said it was good but not wow. That's why you don't order a burger at a southern place. The crispy buffalo wings were delicious and different that your typical BWs. The ice berg wedge was bomb! Had corn and avocado on a heaping pile of iceberg. Definitely recommend- fun atmosphere, decor and music on Friday night:)

Yelp
Burger and fries were amazing. Order their burger for delivery and the quality and flavor is consistent. Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
Great burgers and sweet potato fries. The chimichuri steak is also awesome. The steak fajitas were a bit on the greasy side. The space has character and I always enjoy the music selection.

Yelp
This place was super cute and cozy! I loved how spacious the place was and how you can sit and dine but also they have a bar with really great deals during happy hours (cheap apps & beers!). I came on a date with my boyfriend here and we thought the customer service was really consistent - our waiter helped me order between two entrees I was torn between and it was delicious! One thing is on the bill there is a 3% convenience fee which I felt was a bit unnecessary but other than that I was super satisfied and my tummy was full!

Yelp
We were walking by and saw this huge restaurant with really nice seating. As the name suggests, this restaurant serves southern cuisine. We started with the fried pickles and jalepeno cheddar corn bread. The fried pickles were good but the batter wasn't crispy, it was completely soggy. It is difficult to get a crispy batter but I've had crispy fried pickles so it's not impossible to do. The dip that came with it was really good and I love pickles so I still enjoyed them. The cornbread was really good. I like how the butter was softened which made it easy to spread on the corn bread. It wasn't spicy or cheesy tasting though. For our mains we got shrimp and grits and a brisket sandwich. The grits were cheesy and tasted good (I've never had grits before so I'm not sure how they're supposed to taste). The shrimp was well cooked and the seasoning was nice. The brisket sandwich was good but overall the sandwich was a little dry even though it had sauce in it. Overall the food was enjoyable but there are minor things that can be fixed to get it up to the 5 star rating. Another reason why I didn't give this restarting 5 stars is because the service was very slow and a lot of the time our waiter was just standing there chatting with other waiters. I am curious to try the brunch and other food because it looked interesting.

Yelp
We went for Sunday brunch and had an amazing meal. The Wildfire Burger and Texas Toast Burger were both some of the best we've had, and the fries were cooked perfectly. The mimosas were strong and tasty and very reasonably priced. Service was attentive and friendly, and I would have given it 5 stars had it not been for the speed of the kitchen. The restaurant was hosting a private event, and the kitchen seemed to neglect the fact that other diners were also present, so it took almost an hour to get our food. Luckily we were not in a rush, but overall this was something that should have been planned in advance and not used as an excuse for a very slow kitchen.

Yelp
The worst! I spent a pretty penny on a delivery order from this place. The banana pudding was liquified. Trashed it. The key lime pie was brown. Trashed it. The potato salad was lacking in seasoning and flavor. I ate a few bites and offered the rest to hubby. After one taste he trashed it. The sauce on the wings was good but the chicken itself had a weird texture like it was dry, overcooked or old. Hubby said the fried catfish was not all that great but he ate it because he was famished. I empathize. The jalapeño cornbread was okay although not hot enough for my butter to melt on. The fries were good. Thankfully! How would you mess up French fries, I wonder. After the trauma of everything else, we never touched the coleslaw. I do not recommend.

Yelp
First time I came to this place was a Cinco de Mayo event almost 3 years ago. Last night I swung by for some drinks and it felt so festive. Live band filled the space with happiness and dancing vibes. They had a huge natural Christmas tree and tons of cute holiday decor. The bartender kept the drinks flowing and the vibes merry all around. Will definitely visit again

Yelp
I was there last night. The salmon sandwich was fabulous. The corn on the cob was good. But the mmac & cheese....yuk yuk. It tasted like it came straight out of a box. So fake. Overall, good experience. I will be back. Loved the decor!

Yelp
I met with a friend to catch up at South House for brunch and honestly I'm not sure how to feel about it yet. I looked over the menu and reviews a few times before heading over and I was still undecided by the time I sat down. The atmosphere is pretty cool and chill and there's a lot of space which is nice. We ordered guac and chips and Mac and cheese for the table along with cocktails to start (I ordered the Midnight Mojito and she got the apple cider mimosa). The midnight mojito was a bit too bitter for my taste but her drink was great and we ordered rounds of that for the afternoon. The guac was good but the mac was not that great. It was creamy but after a while it started to have a velveeta cheese taste and parts of it were burnt like they put a torch to the top. After finishing that, it took a while for our waiter to come back to take our orders and brunch ends at 3 and at 2:55 we placed our order. I decided to try the Breakfast Chimichanga and while it looked good it was super dry and bland. I dowsed it in hot sauce and it helped a bit. The salad dressing that came with the greens wasn't pleasant. Honestly, the mimosas and guac were a highlight for me. Spent too much money on meh food so not sure if I'm going to give it another try outside of brunch hours or commit to a full dinner.

Yelp
service was a 0/10. last night was my first time going there. I went to the bar, the bar tender asked what I wanted so I ordered my girls and I a drink, he made the drinks now it's time to pay. He told me they don't take apple pay. cool I had no problem using my card , I went in my wallet seen which one I had, then had to move the money I had on my Apple Pay to the bank card I had. once he told me they don't take Apple Pay I immediately went to my phone to move the money... 15 SECONDS into me opening the app to move the money. this grown ass man catches a attitude and tells me " if this is what your going to be doing all nigh, I'm not doing it" instantly I'm gagged because for one, it's 2025 who don't have Apple Pay at this point, two YOU LITERALLY JUST TOLD ME YALL DONT TAKE APPLE PAY. if I'm going into a place expecting to be able to use my apple pay, then you're telling me yall don't accept that the least you could do is give some grace so i can transfer my money so I can pay with card for the rest of the night. I left immediately after finishing my drink. nonetheless their bartenders are very rude for NO reason, save y'all money and time.

Yelp
Nice spot in jersey city. Staff was awesome and the atmosphere is amazing. The food follows suit. Totally a great spot to grab a bite or get to know someone. It's quiet and so much to take in. I'll be back the burger was amazing. I also had the humus jalapeño dip it was great. Enjoy and happy eating.

Yelp
Service was terrible. We werent given enough plates or cutlery. Staff was also rude and slow to respond to requests. We were also a part of 4, but bill said party of 6 only so they could charge us 20% service charge. Would not recommend it!

Yelp
Really charming, inviting dining room. Food was excellent and came out quickly. Wait staff were very friendly. Has a great bar in the center of it all.

Yelp
I love the decor and overall vibe, and I was excited to grab dinner here at some point after passing by when they were serving a limited menu. I'd say...come for the drinks, the atmosphere, and a few apps, but I'm not sure about a full commitment to dinner. We came in recently and enjoyed a few drinks alongside the fried pickles (that aioli is insane) and deviled eggs. Both very good. I was really in the mood for fried chicken and decided to get the sandwich version, but was kinda disappointed to get two thin fried chicken cutlets that were kinda dry. I was imagining a gigantic juicy fried chicken breast but this was more of something I could get....well, almost any deli. Fries were tasty but lukewarm, though we did save the aioli from the fried pickles and the fries ended up as a fantastic aioli vessel. We also had the smoked pulled chicken sandwich, which was pretty good once we added more sauce to it. Good food, not mind blowing. I'm sure I'll come back--the bar is awesome--but with reset expectations about the rest of the menu.

Yelp
Got the shrimp and grits, flavor was really good but a bit too oily for me so it was hard to finish.

Yelp
By far my favorite restaurant in the area. Always a fantastic time when I come here and the service is so solid - especially by Keila whose been my server the past few Saturday's that I've come for dinner. Now for the review! Reservations: I've come at various different times and it didn't seem like reservations were needed. They have two main seating areas for food and some high tops near the bar. Ambiance: Very trendy. Mixed crowd of people come to get food and drinks. DJ sets up and runs a set Saturday nights and the playlist is always very dope. Top 20's & Hip Hop mostly. There's also a downstairs bar which opens when it gets busy upstairs. Seems more casual down there. Sort of dive bar like. Service: Kelia is the best! So personable, friendly and memorizes the orders. She's efficient and consistent. Probably top 2 servers I've had the pleasure to meet (& she's not #2!) Food: I've gotten a number of things from South House since they reopened a few months back. This most recent trip was the chili wings and ribs. My brother got the steak and all were good. Both mains come with fries which are the perfect balance of crispy and tasty. The wings were the perfect size and nice & sweet. Overall, one of my favorite places to come for dinner & drinks. I will def be back!

Yelp
Came here to catch up with some friends. Food wasn't bad and the beer list was great. I loved the fried pickles and we all got shrimp tacos which were good. Downstairs there's another bar and a few games including foosball, pool, and shuffleboard. Great place to go to get good food and have a good time hanging out and playing games together after.

Yelp
I've eaten here before a few times and have always been satisfied. The down home food offerings are tasty and the setting is comfy with often cool background music. But we just had a private event here and I have to rave about it. South House really hit it out of the park. From my initial emails with event coordinator Taylor to the actual party with bartender/manager Smitty at the helm, South House did all they could to make sure we had an amazing, unforgettable event. The downstairs Rec Room had the perfect chill vibe for our party. A few venues in the area told me that if we wanted to choose our music, we'd have to rent the entire restaurant! While we couldn't custom-control the actual songs played at South House, we were able to choose the genre which was important to us. Also, they offer pretty affordable platters of food for their events - perfect for our party as we knew we didn't need a seated full dinner plate per attendee. Taylor patiently answered the many, many emails I sent her in the weeks leading up to the event. The actual handling of our event was stellar. We were having a 70s/disco themed 50th birthday so Taylor had a disco ball set up for the room and, unprompted, Smitty set up some laser lights! Tons of fun. Any request or question was addressed by the team. The food was delicious (mac and cheese, sliders, mini tacos and fries were standouts, as was the cinnamon pound cake) and the drinks were tasty. Foosball/shuffleboard/billiards were also a cool feature of the room. Plus being located a few blocks away from the Grove St. PATH station was helpful for guests commuting in by train. Our Birthday Boy felt thoroughly celebrated, our guests had an awesome time, and we couldn't have asked for a better place to have our festivities. I highly recommend South House as a party venue, particularly if you're planning something a little more laidback. Thank you, South House! Looking forward to our next meal there.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this restaurant! We were sat in the back area and the ambience was very nice. The veggie burger was good and the fries were great. We also had the green tomato app and that sauce with it is a new craving of mine yum. Also this place is where they filmed the restaurant scenes from It Ends With Us! Very cool to find out after the fact. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
I went here because I wanted to try something new and was honestly disappointment. The chicken burrito was dry and the pulled bbq jackfruit was sour. I was also disappointed as my first choice wasn't available which was a Shepards pie. Besides from the food, the vibe was nice and staff was super friendly and attentive. There is also tons of tables towards the back of the restaurants if the front is too noisy for you and if you want to chat with folks.

Yelp
My experience at South House was a little mixed. On one hand, the food was excellent. Their cocktail menu is eclectic, and the fries are especially tasty! But, later in the night, South House turns in to a club atmosphere with loud, loud music and a bar overcrowded by people. It would have been fine if we were expecting this environment, but we were looking for a spot to have a nice bite & good conversation. The blasting music is so aggressive that you can barely hear yourself think. I might return for an earlier meal to experience a different atmosphere, because the food was pretty good.

Yelp
Welcome to South House. Beautifully rustic. The sound system, top class. The bass will shake your bones. You'll be warmly greeted and quickly seated. It's not uptight, more casual but in a friendly demeanor. The food is guaranteed to fill you up and true to its core. Accompanied by a large selection of drinks, there will be one for many types. At the end, you'll exit and think, that was pretty good, perhaps I'll be back.

Yelp
My friend & I decided to have a night out. We decided to try South house. They can almost accommodate any size party if you give notice or make a reservation (I believe). We went on a Saturday night & the places was packed to the brim. At the time we arrived (7:45-8pm) they only had available 2 high top tables. Luckily for us there was a table that was about to leave maybe about 5 minutes after we had been seated. I politely asked the hostess if they could move us when that table left & they gladly accommodated with no issue. The food was surprisingly good. My companion had the shrimp tacos & I had the brisket sandwich. Both were delicious, my only negative feedback on the food was the brisket had no sauce whatsoever on it. The fries delicious, cooked perfectly (crispy well seasoned exterior & a warm soft interior). The drinks were good, they didn't have much of broad selection as my companion had to ask for 3 different drinks before they actually had what she wanted. I had their whiskey sour & can't remember what she ordered. The food came out in a timely manner and so did the drinks. But unfortunately the waitress was not the best. I completely understand that waitressing is a difficult job especially when the place is super busy but upon asking questions for suggestions or what they're most popular dishes were she seemed a little annoyed by the question. Also in between drinks or after getting our food she disappeared for long periods of time. We only noticed because we were looking to get additional drinks. Also the music was REALLY loud (felt like I was in a nightclub). If I could give this place 3.5 stars I would just from this first experience but I do plan on giving this place another try, maybe at a time of day that it isn't as busy. Overall the experience was pretty decent, the style of the restaurant is very unique. I love myself a dimly lit restaurant with unique decor & a good ambiance. So if that's your thing this could definitely be the place for you

Yelp
Went on a Wednesday night, the music was a tad bit too loud to easily chat or getting the bartender's attention. Food was overall good, drink was also good, but the place lacked service.

Yelp
This was a place I used to come to when I lived in Jersey City. Being that we were in the area, I wanted to try it again. We came here with the family for an early dinner. They don't have a physical kids menu but were very accommodating about the kids' preferences. We got a burger bun with cheese and lettuce, and it was a hit. It came with a side order of fries. We also got the macaroni and cheese, which was nice and cheesy and even had a few spices the kids didn't complain about. I got the smoked BBQ chicken sandwich. I thought it was going to be a patty, but it came out as pulled chicken. I felt that the pieces were too big for my liking. It also didn't have enough of barbecue sauce, leaving it dry. We also ordered the tailgate fried chicken. It was good but was overpowered by uneven bites of blue cheese. The sides of sweet potato fries and onion rings were great. The waitor could have been a little more attentive but was overall patient with the kids. The brick facade and neat gas lit candles were pretty cool. They even have a party room downstairs. The drinks in the past were always delicious but I didn't get any at this visit.

Yelp
Decent place. Nice rustic interior. Music is a bit loud. Service is a bit slow. Food is good. Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
Ordered Mcallan 18 on the rocks which I could tell immediately wasnt 18 because of the color. They then followed up with taking a shot from a new bottle in attempt to darken the color and possibly mask the taste from whatever was poured in the glass. This deception just cost them business from myself and everyone I know who frequent the area. Unfortunate.

Yelp
The food at South House is reliably delicious. I have been there many times now and each time I have been glad I decided to. The burgers, brisket Mac n cheese, and shrimp n grits are amazing. The drinks are tasty and decent pours.

Yelp
I had an OK Caesar salad, and great jalapeño cornbread. Solid service, and I have always loved the overall vibe at South House. Next time I go back, I'll be more adventurous with my food selections for a more comprehensive review.
