Authentic Greek cuisine served with heart, family-run gem

"We once overheard a man on the C train announce that Souvlaki GR’s taramasalata dip could cure any misery or heartache. Before we could get a chance to see who this mysterious fish prophet was, he was gone. Get an order for yourself (along with an obligatory Greek salad) and let us know how you feel. The Lower East Side, Midtown, and Midtown East locations of this Greek spot are all open for takeout and delivery." - hannah albertine, nikko duren
"There are a few locations of Souvlaki GR, and the one in Midtown East is in a basement on 53rd Street. And despite the fact that it’s in a small, windowless space in the bottom of a building, it still manages to feel like something you’d find on a Greek island. Stop by for a quick sit-down lunch, or just come by and pick up a pita stuffed with meat and vegetables. The Greek food here is great, and (possibly due to the fact that it’s semi-hidden) it doesn’t get as busy as it should." - hannah albertine, bryan kim, matt tervooren
"The taramasalata at this Greek spot with a location due south of the park should come with two little yellow strips of mouth caution tape for after you eat it (it’s delightfully fishy, and we think about it all the time). Aside from the fish dip, rely on their Greek wraps, salads, and other mezzes for a quick picnic plan that will impress a group." - hannah albertine

"I noted that Souvlaki GR, for example, has a nice selection of sandwiches with fries." - Robert Sietsema
