Yelp
First of all, this review is the just for the lower level public karaoke area. Please also know that karaoke is one of my, if not, my most favorite activity, so I am more critical than a lot of people.
I've been here approximately 5 times with meetup.com events and just with friends. Let me explain the good and the bad, starting with the bad first, because that's how I roll.
Bad:
-Karaoke Jockeys (KJ) tend to never turn on the karaoke mode/no vocals. Why? My guess is that the manager or bartenders don't like to hear people sing. If that's the case, you may want to find a different job/location to work. The other excuse is that "it sounds bad," as in, the karaoke version doesn't sound as good as the original, well no duh, but no one goes to a karaoke bar to hear sing-alongs. So basically you'll never hear an actual person's voice, just their voice mixed with the original song.
-Low mic volume, unless you know the tricks or have a REALLY loud voice, prepare to basically lip-sync to whatever song you're singing.
-Greedy KJ, one KJ (not sure if she still works there), told me another guy gave her $20 after I gave her $3 tip to entice her to bump my song up. I should give this place a 1 star just based on that. However, there's another nice KJ who'll bump songs up for free if you just ask nicely (and if you're not just hogging the mic all night)
-Drinks aren't that strong. On average, I get about 4 drinks when I'm here sometimes more, sometimes less, usually mixing things up, but I'm almost never tipsy, maybe I'm a alcoholic? Nahhh
-No itemized drink receipt, would be nice to see what I ordered all night...
-No Chinese songs allowed, even if there were only Chinese people in there. Spanish songs are fine though. I can kind of see why, but if I'm allowed to sing Spanish songs that no one understands, why can't I sing Chinese songs that no one understands? #racist?
-No TV screen facing the stage for the singer, if they don't remember the lyrics, they have to look at the sides or behind them.
-Dead on weekends, probably because of the things I mentioned above?
Good:
-Drink prices are reasonable (maybe?), I've never gotten a itemized receipt so I don't know how much any of my drinks are, but I feel the final total seems right every time.
-"Big" dance floor for people to hop on stage and dance along
-Speaker system is great
-Bathrooms are relatively clean
-Food available
I honestly don't know why I'm giving this place a 3 stars especially since they are more of a sing-along bar than a karaoke bar. But since I don't have any other karaoke bars in Philly to compare it to yet, it'll remain a 3 star, for now...
