The Best Queso In Houston - Houston - The Infatuation

"When you’ve only ever encountered something at night, seeing it in the bright light of day can be an unwelcome reality check. One too many late-night trips to Spanish Flowers lead us to believe the queso here is better than it is. It is not. It’s a bland, plasticine bowl of cheesy nothing, and it should stay where it belongs: served after 2am when only 13 pounds of Tex-Mex food can set right whatever you wronged earlier that evening." - chelsea thomas

Google
when we first got in the service was good but once we ordered our entrée and drinks, the service went down. I had to stop the lady a couple times to ask for certain things. The highlight was them bringing the shot cart around. That was nice. Food was excellent. Drinks were strong. Might go back again.

Google
The services was TOP tier here!! I loved the atmosphere and everyone was overly kind! The food was amazing! Didn’t try drinks today but will do in the future! And the queso flameando was top tier!

Google
The service GREAT, the food DELICIOUS!!! This is the second year celebrating my birthday at this restaurant and so grateful to have found this gem!!! The happy atmosphere and amazing food brings back childhood nostalgia, the staff is always smiling and knowledgeable

Google
This is a great restaurant to celebrate a birthday or special occasion. The staff go out of their way to keep it festive. Know if you do not like festive or loud environments, this is not the restaurant for you. Our waiters were phenomenal and repeatedly checked on us. Thank you! The food is good, I avoided the Texmex and had stewed beef and it was seasoned well.

Google
We have celebrated 3 events at this location, and it is absolutely the best. This past Saturday we celebrated my Mom's birthday and EVERYONE had the best time. The margaritas were good and strong, a little pricey but definitely worth it. Our waitress Yesenia remembered us from past visits, and always provides the best service!! She even remembered what kind of beer my Dad likes to drink. The Manager Francis is amazing and super easy to work with. Everything was perfect...the drinks, food, and staff. Thank you for everything! We will be back again.

Spanish Flowers Spanish Flowers!!! This is now on my list of favorite Mexican restaurants! Food: We ordered the Spanish Flowers Dinner which comes with a chicken enchilada(but they will allow you to change the meat if you choose), crispy beef taco, pork tamale, and queso as well as rice and beans. We also ordered the Botana Combo which includes mini chicken flaunts, quesadillas, and nachos. My boyfriend also ordered the churros which came out on cart with a sparkler and a little show from the staff. Everything was delicious and tasted extremely fresh! Their chips and green sauce are delicious! You have to try them out if you’re in the area. Service: The service was amazing. Everyone was so welcoming and attentive. The manager checked on us a few times to make sure everything was to our liking which we could both appreciate since it was our first dining there. Ambiance: The restaurant is decorated very nicely and clean. Parking: They have a little bit of parking lot (which is rare in the heights area) and they do offer valet.

Yelp
So far- Free chips and salsa. Super good. The salsa is fresh and also comes with a green crema of some sort. Both are refreshing! Complimentary veg soup before our meal . Apparently the person who makes the soup her name is Rosemary and she knocked it out of the park. Apparently they have different chefs , but Rosemary made ours and it was delicious. My flaming fajitas were flaming for a lot longer than they do at other places ! Lol . Very delicious. My only knock on this place - once the food came out, no one checked back with us. I wanted a refill on salsa , soda, my tortilla order was incorrect and took 15 min or so for someone to come by/ for us to be able to hail someone..and it didn't appear that busy. Oh my second knock- they charge to refill the salsa ( the free one that comes in the beginning). Guess only the first set of chips and salsa were complimentary. Felt weird to charge for that refill but oh well. I'd definitely return though because the food was great and I'm hopeful service will be better next time :)

Yelp
Waited forever just for water and chips the rest of the service was downhill from there. Drinks were poorly made and the mole was inedible. Skip this location and go to the one in the heights.

Yelp
Best brunch on a Saturday! If you're looking for something delicious in the rice military area Spanish flowers is a nice little hidden gem. Tucked away off of Washington Street. They open at 10 am on a Saturday and there's plenty of seating and plenty of coffee and delicious food ... a must do on the weekend or any day! The restaurant is clean and the staff is friendly !

Yelp
The Spanish Flower is a Houston staple that has been around for many years but expanded in locations. Your classic tex mex food with good chips and salsa. Queso 5/5 Premium Margarita 4/5 Dinner 4/5 Ambiance 5/5 Service 5/5

Yelp
I was a fan of the Spanish Flowers on Main so I have been excited to see more locations including the newest on Durham in the Heights. We had a party of five and were able to get seated immediately on a Friday night which was impressive because we thought it would be crowded. Our server Marco was excellent-funny, charming and gave great recommendations. I had the Spanish Flowers dinner and "splurged" for the $1 upcharge to sub my tamale for a chicken taquito. That was a great decision. I didn't have anything I didn't like. I couldn't eat it all so I am looking forward to eating my leftovers. My companions ordered Margaritas and they all liked their versions from Strawberry to regular and a mix of salt and sugar rims. Can't wait to come back and try a few more dishes.

Yelp
Plenty of parking. Cute, comfortable atmosphere inside. They have tables, booths, and a bar. Our server was very nice and attentive. The food was good and plentiful. I'll be going back.

Yelp
Decided to celebrate a birthday at this location. Ordered the large mixed fajitas and the fish of the day (salmon). The large faijiats a bit smaller than expected for the price. The salmon very well cooked and tastes good. For dessert we ordered a corn cake and tres leches which were delicious. The service was good but there is a language barrier. The inside of restaurant really nice and caters to the Mexican culture.

Yelp
Friends and I went there not long ago to check out this location instead of our usual Main St favorite. That was a mistake. The portions are much smaller here and prices slightly higher. The taco al carbon I ordered on the side was very dry and definitely not worth $7! I also ordered their menudo thinking it would be the nicely-sized dish I get at the Main St location. It was half the size (I.e., smaller bowl for the same large size I've ordered at the Main St. location) for a little more at $16. Completely overcharged for a sub-par meal. The ambience was fine, but the food quality was not the same as the Main St location. Definitely not coming back to this location.

Yelp
Service was decent but food came out cold and very bland. Drinks are especially watered down. I be hard pressed to return.

Yelp
We were a party of 15 on a Saturday night - the waitstaff were great! and very accommodating. The food - as always - was DELISH! Love the new location! Only drawback is the small parking lot, so this can be a little difficult on a busy night.

Yelp
I love this restaurant so much!! The first time I came I loved the vibe so much I decided to throw my moving away party here. Making the reservation was super easy and was $2 a person to reserve it. They called me the day before asking if I wanted to sit inside, which was super nice. The prices are reasonable and the service is amazing. Both times I visited there were no mistakes on our bill (even with large groups). The food is delicious!!!!! They even offer white and yellow queso which I loved. The Spanish flowers dinner is my favorite.

Yelp
I came to try out this location and ended up being blocked in by valet when I came out. So had to wait about 10 mins to leave. I had the chicken and rice plate which has peppers onion and cheese on it and it all seemed a little 3rd grade. Spanish rice they use a bouillon for flavoring, which I don't like. I need onions, garlic .. correct seasonings for my rice. This was a little too Lipton package from the grocery store for me. The fajita tacos are a little smaller than what el tiempo or Lupe tortilla or even Pappasito's serve. Like Taco Bell size not the usual Tex mex restaurant size. Although idc bc my portions are small anyways, I mention because the price is still right up there with the other restaurants. It was meh. They could do better in my opinion. Service was great tho and the place is nice and clean. Food, parking and pricing will make me go elsewhere. Hope this helps

Yelp
All of our food was soooo delicious. I really enjoyed my shrimp cocktail. My date like his fajitas.

Yelp
The restaurant was relaxing and peaceful. I ordered the beef fajitas with an enchilada. It was delicious. I was so hungry I forgot to take a photo of the entree. I also ordered the margarita samplers and they taste like starburst! I enjoyed everything and the service was great as well. Definitely will come back again.

Yelp
Great service! Great drinks! Great vibes! 10/10 The bartenders were attentive and sweet & Francis made it a point to make sure we were satisfied with everything. Looking forward to coming back

Yelp
1 star because the service was bad and a crazy lady pistol whipped a staff member. 1 star for broken ice cream machine 2 stars for making all us pay after a disappointing and potentially traumatic evening 5 stars because the food is good. So 2-star rating

Yelp
The FOOD and atmosphere is absolutely amazing! I would absolutely recommend this place! They went above and beyond for our party and the service is amazing! Marco is the best server! The manager is the very accommodating and I love them!

Yelp
Delicious chicken fajitas tonight served flaming hot! We really enjoyed the food and appreciated the great service and hospitality!

Danny V.

Yelp
The caldo the res at Spanish Flowers is hands down the best around! It doesn't even have to be cold outside to enjoy it. Frances, the manager, is excellent and ensures the service is top notch. Check it out!

Alyssa S.

Yelp
Wonderful food and excellent service! All of the food was incredible. My friends and I all got very different dishes, and agreed that everything was very well seasoned. Food also came out very quickly. The service we received was the highlight of our visit. They offered us water for my friends service dog; they checked on us regularly; I mentioned to my friend that I didn't like the cocktail I ordered, and a manager was next to me immediately offering to get me a different drink. Overall a great experience! Would definitely recommend!

Jose C.

Yelp
What a great experience, Frances mgr, is amazing, delicious foods and great staff Will definitely return

Andy L.

Yelp
Nice people but food was cold after waiting 30 minutes. Tasteless. Tortillas out of a store bought package quality. The original location served fresh, hot tortillas, nothing like tortillas served here. Beef fajitas were like rubber. Took one bite and pushed the plate away. Went home hungry. Never again. Food was much like an unappetizing TV dinner.

Joshua R.

Yelp
I have been to both locations in person and the food was pretty good. Tonight I tried their takeout and was severely disappointed. Apparently they take advantage of customers that order takeout by serving them old cold food. I live about half a mile from there location (4 minutes) and everything was cold and nothing resembled the pictures. When I called the manager Gilbert told me it was my fault it was cold. The taco salad was so bad the individual took a couple of bites and then threw it away. My enchiladas looked good but they were cold and being chicken I wonder how long they set out. The appetizer was also a flop. Someone royally screwed up and to top it off Gilbert the manager assured me it was my fault it was the way it was. I'm sorry in 10 minutes queso should not look like this picture. The food sent out whether in-house or to go should look like their pictures and be hot and freshly made I'm not planning to order from this place again. Bad food, food sent doesn't resemble pictures, cold food and bad customer service.

Yelp
Always a fan of Spanish Flower. But this new location off Durham elevates your dining experience with a modern ambiance yet tradicional flavor experience! I recommend the Taco and Enchilada plate, which offers an opportunity to indulge in two favorites - a variety of enchiladas and sauces with the juicy, great tasting fajita!
google avatar

Annie S.

Yelp
Spanish flower is awesome! They have the best fresh flour tortillas in town. We love that the food is not super greasy and flavorful. Erica was the best server. She was sweet and attentive. Francis, the manager, checked on us and was very sweet as well. I recommend this place over El tiempo or Pappasitos.

Yelp
Cute inside & the staff were friendly. Came for breakfast on a Saturday morning when many other places were packed. This one wasn't at all. Only a few tables. Love the chips & 2 salsas with white queso. Food was mediocre at best. Small portions on big plates. Never got more chips & tortillas weren't good at all. It was just blah. No reason to come back. Sad, because it's such a good location and the one on N Main is so good!

Yelp
Love the food and everything was delicious and very friendly and servers there was helpful and welcoming we love it we'll be back to be bring the rest of the family

Yelp
Great food and service. They have valet for free if you don't like to walk! I like that the places can fit a lot of people and it has outdoor sitting also.

Yelp
Just ate a very tasty meal here! First time at this location and was not disappointed. I wanted the Spanish Flowers Breakfast with eggs, ranch potatoes, beans and grilled pork chop. Not on menu but Angelo, our waiter asked the chef and he whipped up one for me. Yummy! They have a new manager, Francis, who is trying to establish an upgraded consistency in food and service. She is doing a great job. Atmosphere is lovely upscale with nice background music. All in all a nice meal in nice surroundings.
google avatar

Yelp
Always great food, on Friday and Saturday nights they have a DJ it is quite loud and the whistles when someone orders Tequila shots is annoying as they do that whistle all through the restaurant but all in all we enjoy the good food.
google avatar

Yelp
In the area and meaning to try Spanish Flowers for quite some time. Really appreciated the ambiance. Nice vibe and service was fantastic. Enjoyed the chips and they start you off with a trifecta of salsas/dip. There is a green sauce, salsa and queso. Would have liked a bit more heat with the salsa; but, all were good. The man ordered the Carne Guisada and said it was passable. I had the spinach enchiladas. There was a light cheese sauce on the enchiladas, but if you are looking for cheese, mushroom and or onion you will find none. Only spinach is wrapped inside the tortilla, which is no problem for me; but it wasn't extremely flavorful. The refried beans and rice were tasty. Good experience and we will definitely be back to try a margarita and venture out a little more with the menu.

Yelp
Excellent !! Really enjoyed this food and service . Great management ! Welcome back Spanish Flowers
google avatar

Yelp
The newer, fancier version of the OG Spanish Flowers - now on Durham. Bright, hip, new, elevated food options. Service was excellent, food was as light and modern or as old school and yellow cheese as you want to go. Drinks were fantastic. I love the OG Spanish for late nights and hangovers, but this young, bright, glossier version is very cool too. This location is NOT 24 hours.

Jean V.

Yelp
Love the food and the service was outstanding. The drinks are amazing ! Come celebrate a birthday here they know how to celebrate.
google avatar

Grayson L.

Yelp
You want some Mexican food, we'll bring your ass to Spanish Flower. They will do you so good, you'll never want to leave. The presentation is what their focus is on, making everything that much better. Our waiter, Marco Polo, is a G. The margarita tower is solid. The manager came out and checked to make sure we were satisfied. Loved the ambiance, "it's a vibe".
google avatar

Susannah M.

Yelp
Great service and food! The wait staff is wonderful and attentive! Queso, red sauce and green sauce complimentary! Beef fajitas are good and not greasy! Spinach enchiladas are wonderful too!! Highly recommend visiting!
google avatar

Irene H.

Yelp
customer service was great. the food wasn't so much - tortilla did not taste fresh, stale + old possibly. no wait during lunch hour. parking lot - enough spots.

Rafael A.

Yelp
First off let me start with the fact that they give you complimentary chips, salsa, AND QUESO! Come on now! It doesn't get any better than free queso! The service was outstanding and all of our food was delicious. Their margaritas slap too. Great local Mexican spot! And shoutout to the manager with the cool glasses :)

Janice M.

Yelp
5 star rating at Spanish Flower seafood! Alexie is the best bartender! Roxanna, Gabby are great as well!

Steve C.

Yelp
Tonight was my first visit to this restaurant - my son and daughter-in-law brought me. They called it "Our new favorite restaurant". Were they ever correct! This was the best restaurant meal I've eaten in 20 years! I had the seafood enchiladas and they were FABULOUS! Too much to eat in one sitting - I can see what I'm having for lunch tomorrow! From the freebie chips and salsa (the green sauce was amazing - the red only fantastic) to the special fireworks margarita tower for birthday celebrations to the absolutely wonderful entrees - this restaurant wowed me! if you're looking for great Mexican food, THIS is the place to go! I'll be back, without a doubt.

Eric V.

Yelp
The staff here really care about good service with great food! Marco the manager is wonderful and the atmosphere is very peaceful. Highly recommended!!

Lawrence W.

Yelp
I love this place. I went for the first time and the food and ambiance were great. The service was amazing and shoutout to Francis for conversing with me. I'll be back.

Yelp
Absolutely Love this place the food is fresh and delicious. The service is great and friendly. Francis the manager is amazing and hospitable!! Thanks for the suggestions! We will definitely be back soon!

Yelp
The Horrible food and service. Over priced, I would not recommend this place at all to dine or drink.

John T.

Yelp
We come about twice a week! Really enjoy the food, and the service. Very friendly. Good to watch a game or just enjoy your food.
google avatar

Tina I.

Yelp
First time at this location and it was a great experience! The food was amazing! Large portions, great fresh chips and salsa, and great service. I had their Tilapia plate and it was so creamy and rich. The mushroom and shrimp adds a nice touch of flavor and texture. My husband had their beef and cheese chile rellenos, and let me tell you he left no crumbs. We've also tried their Flan and Mole Enchiladas. Delicious. The flan was perfect, it was creamy, soft, and rich. Mole, is just how you would want it. Not too sweet, and not too bitter. It was just right. The atmosphere was really nice and clean. It's a great spot to come eat at, especially being in the center of the nightlife. I can find this place being a HIT in the future. 10/10 I would definitely come again.

Em L.

Yelp
My husband and I were excited to visit this new location on Durham. Well, the music was so loud we couldn't hear each other talk. So we asked the waiter if the volume could be lowered some. He said he would do that. Well, it was NEVER lowered! I think the female manager wants to turn the restaurant into a nightclub. The type of music was the pounding sound of reggaeton or bachata. Just awful!! Where's the other wonderful Mexican music? Why the consistent pounding sound??? We won't be back. We'll return to the original location on N. Main. I'm also posting this review on NextDoor to warn people not to visit this place.

Hassan M.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Fantastic margaritas!! Ordered the airplane shots and our server Charlie made it a memorable night
