How it Feels to Go on Hunger Strike | Eater

"Students at this historically Black college exposed widespread food insecurity and found administrators unresponsive to proposals to redistribute unused meal swipes; after organizing, arrests and a short hunger strike drew national activist attention and prompted a rapid administrative commitment to provide tens of thousands of annual meals to commuter and food-insecure students." - Stephen Lurie

Google
Spelman college provided me with many fond memories, even as I attended Morehouse! I actually took a few classes there -- the professors are very dedicated to teaching and your education. As a former student of their neighboring school, I can also say they throw some pretty awesome events!

Spelman is just as amazing as the first time I entered her gates, decades ago. It's a magical place.... A lot of Black girl magic is bred and molded there. Thank you for your contribution to society!

I took my daughter here for their Junior Preview day and it was an amazingly beautiful campus. The admissions department was incredibly helpful with conveying what this college stands for and what they are committed to instilling in the women who graduate from here. I would be honored to have my daughter be a part of such an incredible institution!

Beautiful campus that is clean with contemporary buildings.

Ask any student who wasn't rich walking on that campus what they had to do, what they had to go through, what they had to tell people about themselves and to whom, just to go there and stay there. To have a regular social life. To get good grades and graduate on time. Ask them how and where they are now? Has this school helped them any? Were they part of the perpetual 40% (quoted 2019, BEFORE the pandemic) of Spelman alum who graduate without any prospects? (This number EXCLUDES the grads who *planned* on going to Spelman only to get an MRS degree. This EXCLUDES students who went into higher education. This number EXCLUDES students who didn't want a job but instead started their own business post-graduation. 40% of students graduate either without a job or without any of the above, because this school caters to legacies and nepo babies. I'm happy for those students, but this school is doing a severe disservice to everyone else.)

Sister moved into her dorm today, campus staff was great directing us around with all the caos of students returning.

Google
Wonderful place for smart Black girls to become powerful Black women. Spelman has a history of choosing top candidates for admission; I’m not sure of the current acceptance rate, but it’s an elite institution. Of course Spelman is a college, but its’ niche goes beyond high-level academics. The experience at Spelman is steeped in excellence, pride, and sisterhood. Any woman who graduates has the tools to make a profound impact in her community.

Yelp
The illustrious! Spelman has amazing and brilliant faculty! They have a few food options outside of the campus dining hall, so you can't go wrong with food. The grounds are beautiful well maintained.

Yelp
My daughter attended Spelman College and graduated with high honors. Her education at Spelman afforded her the opportunity to be offered a Rockefeller grant to attend Harvard University where she received her Master's Degree. Since that career accomplishment she also received a Master's degree in psychology and is now a school psychologist.

Yelp
If all you want is an education and nothing else, Spelman is the place for you. However is u want a safe environment, tolerable living spaces, and an administration that cares about the students, Spelman is not for you.

Yelp
WOW. I can even review my Alma Mater on Yelp. I graduated from Spelman a little while ago (not in the 2000's, but not when Jesus was still alive, either). To be very frank, I didn't always like Spelman. I felt like I didn't fit in, and I didn't have a whole slew of friends (I have some accountability here, some of my isolation was self imposed). As a grown woman, though, I now look back on my education and realize what Spelman was trying to do, and greatly appreciate it. I've also attended PWI's and there are things that I learned at Spelman that I'm sure I wouldn't have learned anywhere else. Those freshman orientation, ADW, and Sophomore Assembly classes, the convocations - yes I will be honest, I giggled and snickered while attending them, and thought they were a joke. NOW I GET IT, and I do appreciate those classes. If you are thinking about attending Spelman - go. It's worth it. Not to mention Spelman is one of the top ranked schools in many different categories (HBCU's, Women's colleges, private colleges, etc.). If I could do it all over again, I would. Make sure you get all you can out of the experience.

Yelp
Spelman thy name we praise! Oh the memories. These were some of the best years of my life. With a sister that went to Spelman I was already a little biased when it came time for me to apply to college. Here I was a freshman in the big city of Atlanta, but Spelman kept me safe with its gates except when I escaped to explore. I stayed in the best dorms, luckily. My learning and social experiences were balanced and I wouldn't change them for the world.

Yelp
My Spelman Sister :) speaks the truth. The greatest four years of my life -- enriching, enlightening, educating and so much more. I couldn't have asked for a better institution to mold such a smooth transition from little girl to young woman. I would go back and do it all over again if I could -- "May God forever bind our hearts to thine" I LOVE YOU SPELMAN COLLEGE!

Yelp
Definitely not a Spelman sister (I know, hard to believe...) though I humbly strive to meet their standards of eloquence and tenacity. Held a booth promoting the Online Service Community I help run. Met a lot of great young ladies who felt encouraged/ potentially required to be engaged in community service. Lots of them with great ideas, all of which the school helped nurture their leadership in innovation. People were very friendly and welcoming of us on their campus, even introducing us to people who weren't in the immediate vicinity. Plus, Fried Chicken Wednesday is a campus wide holiday. Halleloo!

Yelp
I have seen nothing but excellence from this university. I am so proud of all the women that I see graduate from the university. I also think it is beautiful and well kept! Totally recommend. :)

Yelp
Came here when I attended international conference for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority incorporated in July and it was a very nice campus. Just seeing the places that a Different World was filmed was awesome for me and seeing where "Gilbert Hall" was made me happy!

Yelp
I have met quite a few strong, respectful women in Atlanta and when they tell me they are proud graduates from Spelman, I am not at all surprised.

Yelp
I am a proud graduate of the class of 1985! I am ashamed to say after numerous treks back on campus, I visited the cafeteria for the first time Homecoming 2018 at the urging of my classmates. It was very impressive! Let me just say, we've come a long way baby!! The campus is still beautiful, and every visit I am flooded with fond memories. I would not change my experience for all the money in the world. Some experiences are priceless, and my years at Spelman from '81 to '85 fall into that category! "Spelman Thy Name We Praise!"

Yelp
We attended the Spelman-Morehouse 86th Annual Christmas Concert. It was so amazing how professional this program is performed! We are also greatly thankful for the years of history and incredible ladies who have graduated and become talented and world changing individuals! We thank God for Spelman!

Yelp
WOW! I get to review my alma mater!!!!! I LOOOOOVE Spelman. So much so that I am still around even after graduating back in 2010. As a former student and currently as a professor I can honestly say that I LOVE the legacy that Spelman is creating and I am thankful to be a part of such a historic institution. OOOOOHHHHH Don't you WISH! :-)
