"Spicers Sangoma Retreat is fifty miles from the city, a little over an hour by car, but far enough into the Blue Mountains that the urban sprawl is but a distant memory. That faraway feeling is accentuated by the forest views, and by the African-inspired interiors — Sangoma is the Zulu word for 'healer,' and there’s more than a little bit of a safari-lodge accent to these eight lavish modernist suites." - Mark Fedeli

"How did it strike you on arrival? Named after the Zulu word for ‘healer,’ Spicers Sangoma Retreat plays the part—the cocooning sanctuary sits in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, just an 80-minute drive from Sydney (but oh, how far away it feels). The eco-certified luxury escape is also a decent distance from regional hub Katoomba's tourist-flocked trails (at least an hour's drive), so you’ll enjoy a tranquil getaway, surrounded by lofty views of verdant bush and Bowen Mountain. Nice. What’s the crowd like? Sangoma’s guests are a sophisticated tribe, seeking an indulgent weekend away from Sydney, an interstate minibreak, and occasionally, an international holiday. The Spicers Retreats group, which owns chic hotels and lodges throughout Sydney and in nearby wine regions Hunter Valley and Queensland, attracts a loyal, if predictable, clientele. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. With just eight intimate suites, Spicers Sangoma offers guests a truly boutique set-up. All five room tiers have generously apportioned space, with high ceilings and private wraparound balconies that help to bring the outdoors in (can you hear the sound of lyrebirds yet?) High-end details include custom-designed king-size beds; comfy living areas; chandeliers; and freestanding Philippe Starck baths for two, plus wood-burning fireplaces to keep things cosy in winter. Book a Tent Suite to feel even more at one with the forest canopy; though if it's more glamour you want, the bi-level Chief’s Suite features a private plunge pool. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The well-stocked complimentary minibar, which offers drinks and snacks, is replenished daily; there's also a Nespresso coffee machine for your morning hit. A flatscreen TV and DVD player provide entertainment, and free WiFi is readily available. Eco-friendly Australian Appelles toiletries add a pampering touch. Room service: Worth it? In-room dining can be arranged, though if you can be bothered to leave your room, you can join your fellow guests for canapés and aperitifs in the Guest Lounge before dinner each evening. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why? Head chef Will Houia whips up delicious contemporary Australian meals in the modern-rustic dining room. Under the light of hurricane lamps and a smattering of flowers, you'll be treated to breakfast, lunch, and a regularly changing set four-course dinner. Houia makes much of his locally-inflected cuisine: all produce is fresh, organic, and seasonal (and locally sourced, of course). Opt to dine on the terrace under the stars, then head out to the outdoor fire pit, where you can sip a G&T or roast a marshmallow (or, go crazy and do both). Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. The casual open-plan Guest Lounge, variously styled with high-end furniture, Australian art, lavish fur throws, and African accessories, is an ideal backdrop for playing boardgames by the fire. A solar-heated infinity lap pool beckons outside, lined with chic loungers and relaxation pods for taking in those dreamy horizon views. If that's not enough in the way of relxatin, unwind with a sauna or meditation session at Spa Anise. Bottom line: worth it, and why? Adults-only Sangoma is all-inclusive, with food and wines accounted for (excluding Cellarmasters wines and premium cocktails), so you can enjoy a stress-free break. With its luxurious guest rooms, blissful pool and connection to nature, it’s the perfect place to relax—especially if you're the cool, always-in-the-know sort." - Sophie Davies

This was our third visit to Spicers Sangoma, and once again, it was an incredible experience. A big highlight for us is always seeing Jill, the housekeeper. She is an absolute gem — so warm, energetic, and genuinely caring. Jill goes out of her way to make sure we feel welcomed and comfortable every time. She’s a true asset to the team and really adds a personal touch to our stay. We also want to acknowledge Ivy, the General Manager, who looked after us so thoughtfully throughout our stay. She was warm, attentive, and made us feel completely at home. The rest of the staff are equally fantastic — always professional, friendly, and accommodating. The chef deserves a special mention too. They are incredibly considerate with dietary needs, and the food is consistently outstanding. Every meal is a highlight, and we’ve never been disappointed. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

After spending over $5,000 for two nights in the Chief Suite, I had high expectations—and I’m happy to say they were fully met. The room's decor was beautifully designed, creating an elegant yet cozy atmosphere. Despite being located next to the main house, the suite felt completely secluded, offering full privacy for a truly relaxing stay. One of the highlights was the dining experience. Not having to choose meals at lunch and dinner was a refreshing change, and the set menus were both generous and delicious. The variety was impressive, and every dish was satisfying. Overall, an exceptional experience that was well worth it!

This definitely ranks within my top hotels I have ever stayed at and ticked all of my boxes. It is simply fabulous with only 8 rooms, but only four were occupied while we were there. Our room (bush suite no 5) was isolated, romantic and fantastic. Almost entirely open plan with massive sliding doors leading to a secluded veranda with a fantastic view all the way to Sydney in the far distance. The bath and shower were excellent and made you feel you were getting clean in nature.||The rest of the hotel was lovely with beautiful furnishings, but the real star of the show was the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all nothing short of stunning. Delicious, healthy food imaginatively presented and combined and paired with delightful wines. My wife is a very health conscious vegan and absolutely loved the food and thoughtfulness that was given to her.||We had a couple’s massage. I’m a novice, but my wife rated it one of her best ever.||The final mention must go to the staff who were all excellent - attentive, friendly and professional.||This really is a stunningly great place.

Absolutely magical – the perfect escape! I can’t recommend Spicer's Retreat highly enough. I was in desperate need of some downtime, and this beautiful property delivered everything I needed and more. All I wanted was to reconnect with nature, enjoy some peaceful hikes, rest deeply, indulge in spa treatments, and savour incredible food — and this was the *perfect* place to do all of that. The staff were exceptional from start to finish — warm, attentive, and genuinely caring. The rooms were absolutely stunning, blending luxury with a deep sense of calm and comfort. I stayed in the Canopy Suite and would highly recommend it — waking up surrounded by nature was simply unforgettable. If you’re looking for a serene escape where you can truly unwind and recharge, Spicer's Retreat is the place. I’ll definitely be back!

We stayed here for our anniversary. The only room available was the Chief Suite at just under $3,000 per night. It is marketed as the premier room at the resort. FOH team was great, food exceptional, but when it came to the room, most expensive did not equal best. Some examples: 1. when we arrived the hose was in the pool (switched off) and there was a dirty and smelly rag on the bathroom sink 2. the toilet light was flashing with a strobe effect to the extent that it was nauseating 3. the fridge handle was broken so we had to open it by prying the door with our fingers 4. the bathroom door was broken at the bottom 5. the handle on the kitchen mixer tap (pull out) was missing/broken 6. one of the two mirror lights in the bathroom and wasn't working 7. the screen doors were jammed up so we had to force them to open and close The issues kept happening to the point where it was a recurring joke during our (one night) stay. It took more than a week (and a follow up with head office) to get a response from management. Never received even an apology (except for the delay), but was told that housekeeping and maintenance had been notified. I am guessing the other rooms were in better condition. For the price (and indeed much less), there are much better options in that region (and other regions close by Sydney).

The staff at Spicers are lovely and so helpful. Our stay was made better by the friendly and chatty ladies we saw everyday. Sadly the property needs some investment and some updating. It’s not quite 5 star. ||The main hotel building and restaurant area are really nice but our room (chief suite) needed a jolly good clean and some maintenance. There were lots of cobwebs under all the window blinds. Some windows don’t have any curtains or blinds so you are woken when the sun rises. Outside the main suite door was an old plastic crate and an unravelled hose pipe. Just not quite 5 star.||We enjoyed staying here and loved our walks in the blue mountains but we probably wouldn’t return to Spicers to stay.

Very cook / quirky hotel. Rooms are unique and very fun. The food was AMAZING!!!! WHAT A TALENTED YOUNG CHEF!!!! If we lived in Australia, I would return just for the food. A bit out there, so not necessarily close to activities we were doing but had a delightful stay.
