Northern Thai specialties like khao soi, spicy jackfruit salad

"Despite the name, the Thai signage outside this East Hollywood strip mall joint actually reads “Northern Thai food,” which was enough to get me in the door for khao soi that, after one bowl, might be one of the best in the city. The coconut curry broth is thick and rich with the vibrant flavors of turmeric and galangal, and I love that chiles did not hold back in the curry paste—the penetrating heat enlivens the dish. Wavy egg noodles bob around, curry clings to each strand, and the bowl is topped with fried noodles and cilantro for crunch (eat these fast because they’ll get soggy), plus a wedge of lime, chopped red onion, and chile-kissed pickled mustard greens on the side; use the lime and dump the rest in to cut the richness. Protein options include chicken, beef, and tofu, but the star is truly the soup itself." - Eater Staff
"We appreciate a restaurant that calls it like it is, and at Spicy BBQ, expect Thai-style BBQ and expect it spicy. That said, this six-table strip mall spot at Normandie and Santa Monica has much more than just a few excellent plates of BBQ pork. The spicy jackfruit salad, the pork patties, the chili dips, and a khao soi so good we think about it late at night when the lights go out, are what make Spicy BBQ one of our go-to’s in East Hollywood." - brant cox, cathy park
"We appreciate a restaurant that calls it like it is, and at Spicy BBQ, you’re going to eat Thai-style barbecue and it’s going to be spicy. But this six-table strip mall spot on the corner Normandie and Santa Monica does a lot more than spareribs and satay—it's also one of our favorite spots for bliss-inducing Northern Thai food. We rarely place an order here without getting the fiery jackfruit salad, savory fried larb patties, delicious chili dips, and a bowl of khao soi that is worth braving even the worst East Hollywood traffic to eat. The curried broth is so rich and gravy-like, we usually order it with silky cubes of tofu, which provide some welcome lightness." - brant cox, arden shore, garrett snyder, sylvio martins
"Spicy BBQ Restaurant often gets overlooked in the hyper-competitive neighborhood of Hollywood/East Hollywood, but let it be known that this tiny strip-mall spot is serving tremendous Thai food. As the name suggests, BBQ meats are their speciality, and yes, they’re spicy, but we always throw in an order of their khao soi, pork patties, and spicy jackfruit salad as well. Call (323) 663-4211 to order. Takeout or delivery is also available on most major platforms." - brant cox
"“The most nondescript name ever, right? Spicy BBQ. But they actually did laab tot way before us. I had always wanted to make a laab tot, and then I had theirs and was like, ‘This is so f*cking good.’ Theirs is so herby. I don’t know how they do it, it’s almost hard to eat. But I really love their pork neck, grilled pork neck.”" - kat hong
