The Best Restaurants in South Austin

"If you’re at a bar around dinnertime in South Austin, one of your companions might eventually turn to you and ask, “Should we get Spicy Boys?” The answer is yes. In fact, just make a habit of meeting at St. Elmo Brewing Company so you’ll already be there—its peppy yard is home to one of a few Spicy Boys trucks sprinkled throughout town. Specializing in Thai-style fried chicken, the small menu lives up to its name. You can choose the heat level of your sandwich (which rivals Popeyes) or nuggets, and the maximum is called Tingly Gai for a reason. But don’t ignore the pickled cucumbers and papaya salad, both of which are better than any two little sides need to be. " - matthew jacobs, nicolai mccrary

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝟓 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬. Yeah, look no further when it comes to fried chicken. There is not a box this place does not check. You MUST get the spicy tater tots, they are flaky, moist on the inside, and packed with flavor. The chicken is well seasoned and juicy. The heat levels are available for people who don’t need a lot of spice to heat lovers. I came to this place on a Saturday evening after a bar crawl and this was the perfect way to end cap the night. Highly recommend, don’t miss this one.

Google
Solid food truck experience! The chicken and tater tots are fried perfectly! Be careful about the spice though…I enjoyed it, but others in the group struggled. The papaya salad is a must! The banana pudding is also excellent! This truck is parked in St Elmo’s Brewing’s patio.

When we visited Austin, I had really wanted to try this place based on reviews and menu items. When we got there we were sadly told that they had run out of everything except tater tots. So we ended up just having the tater tots (both tingly and the normal ones). The sauce with the tingly tots is delicious! So spicy but flavorful. One of the best tots I have had. I came back to Houston and had my husband was coming back a few days later so told him to grab it on the way back to Houston. The food survived the 3 hour drive and still tasted pretty decent. I will be honest, I had more expectations from the chicken sandwich but it wasn’t a wow. The pickle chips definitely added a good flavor but it lacked the spice kick. I would rate it a 3/5. Tots as usual were very good. Also ordered the nuggets which were decent. Maybe my experience would have been different if I would have eaten there prepared fresh but I was expecting the sandwich to be in line with Urban Bird or Tumble 22 spice level.

Google
Oh. My. Lord. I consider myself a connoisseur when it comes to chicken. And, this place melted my heart. I went for the spicy tots and the spicy nuggets. Both were epic. I'll look forward to my next visit, for real. Next time I'm ordering the whole damn menu lol

Google
Really a 4.5 stars. I like their food but will always choose patty palace over spicy boys. Very delicious at both places and at this brewery. Not usually a fan of food trucks in Austin (I know, sorry—the quality doesn’t always match the novelty). But this place is worth it, and they have fun options for everyone.

Google
Absolutely banging. I usually say a lot more but, holy moly , absolutely delicious. Chicken nuggets are a fantastic value. Of course I ordered the spiciest thing on the menu twice, devoured both. Fantastic!

Bill Whitmire

Google
I had the "spicy" chicken sandwich and nuggets. Very delicious but NOT spicy at all. I got the spiciest one "tingly"? This was not spicy AT ALL to me. I'm guessing these fellas are from Oregon or NY or something. It's a very good sandwich and the only reason I'm leaving 4 stars is to hopefully flag the owners attention to this. Owner: It's great, but you should make something truly spicy if you're going to call your business "spicy" boys. You're spiciest version barely registered on my spice index.

Google
When I heard this place was good I was not disappointed at all. I'm from Brownsville about 5hrs away and I asked for recommendations I ended up ordering a chicken sandwich, wings and tater tots. Everything was delicious, great serving and would highly recommend this place to anyone. I can't wait to bring my family and have them try their food.

Yelp
Chicken was fried and seasoned well. I tried the bone in chicken, tingly nuggets and the og sandwich. I liked the bone in chicken the best. The meat was tender and came out hot. The food was ready pretty fast and you can eat inside of the brewing building which was nice.

Yelp
Like the good and subtle burn of their spicy sandwiches, Spicy Boys has grown on me here of late and I find myself defaulting more and more often to their awesome food truck at St. Elmo's for lunch when I am in town. Situated outside of St. Elmo's Brewery in "The Yard" this food truck has great options for meat eaters and vegans/vegetarians alike. You can order via a QR Code found on tables, outside the food truck, or you can order in person at their window. My go-to items are the Vegetarian Fried Tempeh Sandwich (hot gai style) and the Curry & 2 Roti. Orders have always been made fresh and delivered screaming hot. Service has always been good, fast and friendly, no issues to report. Short and Sweet: Spicy Boys delivers on quality and quantity leaving me beyond full, beyond satisfied, and always looking forward to my next opportunity to grab another Hot Gai.

Yelp
My partner and I decided to try a new fried chicken place in South Austin and this was a hit! I had never been on Elmo St. and it was a good chance to explore the options-- Spicy Boys did not disappoint. The Spicy Boys website is extremely easy to navigate, making it a prime take-out spot for those wanting a meal on the go. It was ready within 10 minutes while I was on my way to pick up and still steaming hot when I arrived 10 minutes after it was claimed as ready. The fried chicken was juicy, falling off the bone with the crispy outside the only thing keeping the chicken in one piece. Not overly saucy, the chili oil was the perfect amount of heat and level of greasy. I was entranced by the sauces as well-- the thai basil ranch was thin enough to coat the nuggets, coating them evenly without a trail of grease or being too messy. The massaman mayo had a hint of sweetness, perfect for the bone-in chicken! Spicy Boys is perfect for a person looking for a spot to sit outside in the shade with friends, grab a drink inside St. Elmo, or try somewhere new with family members visiting from out of town. Dogs are allowed as well if kept on a leash.

Yelp
This area was so cute! Service was quick and easy + the staff were nice. I got the hot gai sandwich, OG tots, and papaya salad. Everything was 10/10 except the papaya salad. I wouldn't recommend that but would def get the sandwich and tots again!

Yelp
Spicy Boys Fried Chicken to the rescue. A Sunday of trying Texas Whiskey and food trucks glad to find Spicy Boys Fried Chicken. Found this food outside of Still Austin Whiskey. Order and pay off the WR wait for a text that your food is ready. The fried chicken sandwich was nice and delicious the chicken was moist and tasty. The bun was nice and warm. Thank you for the good food.

Yelp
My favorite panang curry in Austin! It's actually kind of insane that I haven't written this review yet because I've been going at this particular location for 3 years now. We always online order after we get our first round of beers and our food is usually ready within a half hour which is perfect. I've tried everything on their menu (and they occasionally add special items, mostly during The Yard themed quarterly events). I Always order the panang curry (with extra roti), Tingly tots, Spicy pickles, and hot nugs. This is a go-to meal that we have at least quarterly through the year. The meat is thigh meat and creates a tasty, tender, rich flavor profile. I love that you have the choice of different levels of heat for the items, like they offer "classic tots" which have no heat at all if that's not your thing. The tater tots are a great level of crispy on the outside, but still light and fluffy on the inside. You can also sub for cauliflower tots. This place shines in quality. Never skip the sauces either! Great, friendly service from the truck and they never let your order sit, it's always piping hot. Ordering on their QR code is simple and makes sense. That portal also lets you know if anything is currently out or not available through them. Orders come in a paper bag with utensils, napkins, and easy to reuse and repackage (if you manage to not finish) and take home.

Yelp
Was having coffee down the street and got hungry. This chicken sandwich surprised me with its great flavor combination, East meets South. The papaya salad totally made this sandwich. Savory. Delicious.
google avatar

Veronica Y.

Yelp
Soooooo good!! I got the sandwich with massaman curry flavors. The bread is just enough to protect your hands from getting too dirty. Soft brioche(?) type and not thick so it focuses you on the chicken. The fried chicken -- all thigh meat so extra flavorful, tender, and never dry. So so so much flavor throughout the whole thing. And the chicken was also busting out the sandwich, as you can see from my photo. And I love the massaman flavor!! Not too spicy but added such a great warmth throughout the eating experience (and after). Absolute genius to add this flavoring to a chicken sandwich.

Yelp
As a Southeastern Asian American raised in the South, I'm no stranger to spicy fried chicken and authentic cuisine from southeast Asia. I've only heard great things about Spicy Boys, but I've never actually considered it just to try a sandwich. Since I was in the area, I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, Spicy Boys didn't live up to my expectations. Food: The papaya salad lacked authenticity, it used noodles? instead of actual shredded papaya and didn't have the flavor components necessary for papaya salad: spicy, sweet, salty, and sour enough ?? The tater tots and nuggets were both overly seasoned and too crispy. I did try the Fried Chicken Sandwich, but as a fan of chicken breasts over thighs, it wasn't quite to my taste.

Bhagyashree B.

Yelp
You can find this food truck right outside St. Elmos brewery. There's plenty of patio seating around the area. 3.5 stars rounded to 4 as they had vegan substitutes for some of the items on the menu. Sandos, i.e. burgers can be ordered with a soybean patty rather than chicken and they also have cauliflower nuggets as a vegetarian substitute. The burger was quite filling, although a little dry and did not include a side of sauce or ketchup. Papaya salad in the OG burger was refreshing.
google avatar

Mike E.

Yelp
Food: 4/5 I had the OG sandwich, the tingling tots, and the nuggets. The tots were my favorite because they had a spicy seasoning on them which I never had before. They also came with a Spicy Ranch which was amazing. The sandwich and nuggets were also very good although not super crunchy like I had expected. Going to come here again FOR SURE! Service: 5/5 The service was super quick and it only took about 7 minutes from the moment I ordered to have my food in hand. The staff was very friendly and made sure we had napkins, sauces, and the right amount of spice in our food before leaving! Environment: 5/5 You really can't beat a food truck that's built on the side of a brewery... right? Even though parking was a bit rough, we still managed to find a spot close by and there were plenty of picnic tables to sit at outside!
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
This place is really good and located in a brewery so it's a nice spot to grub and have a brew! The "tingly" spice is perfect if you enjoy some heat.
google avatar

Tina D.

Yelp
Enjoyed the nuggets and bone in wings with tater tots. They were seasoned just right. It was spicy and crispy. They tasted like all the other spicy boy locations.

Yelp
I have been itching to try this place since it opened due to the hype. It did NOT disappoint. Went with some friends so we got to try multiple things: Fried chicken - top favorite. It was perfectly juicy and the honey with the tiny spicy kick to it was literally perfection. I couldn't think of a change needed if I tried. Boneless Nugs - we enjoyed sharing these. Since they are smaller, you don't get the same juiciness as the full chicken, but the flavor is still there. These were fun to try the multiple dipping sauces we got. Fried Chicken Sandwich - the people's favorite. Can't go wrong here. Tater Tots - we tried both the regular and tingly Sichuan spicy ones. The seasoning was perfect on the regular ones. The spicy ones had so much flavor. Hard to choose which one we enjoyed more. Spicy pickles - I am a pickle addict and wanted to try these. They were different. Everyone said they were just okay. I would not get them again. Banana pudding - Not your ordinary pudding at all. It's more of a water gravy consistency which was weird at first. The flavor is very good though and the black crunchy sesame made it truly unique. Everything was soooo good, I had to come back 3 days later with my partner to get it again. She was just as hooked. Ironically she can't do spicy, but the fried chicken is so good, it did not even bother her. Prices are fair. Since this is a food truck, we took our order to Still Austin to pair it with a flight of whiskey. Beware, the whiskey enhances the spices lol. The man who took our order was extremely pleasant as well. I live up North so glad to know there is one of 969 Sign Bar or Metric to try next.

Yelp
Wowww so **** good!! I am not the biggest fan of fried chicken but this place slaps!! Sooo yummy- would totally come back. Chicken: Had the classic nugs- aka to die for. Not spicy so I might level up next time. If you're a Texan spice level is none. The ranch is delish, just wish there was more. For the price, there is a lot of chicken. I would love to try more things here, the food was hot and delicious and staff was great! Wait wasn't taking either. Will be back.
google avatar

Molly B.

Yelp
Great food truck if you like fried chicken! They have a decent variety of spice levels. I love the atmosphere of the bar this truck is in and it's so fun all their branding is pink. The guys who run the truck are polite and helpful, the menu isn't huge so it's pretty easy to choose a meal!
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
Discovered Spicy Boys after a round (or two) at St. Elmo brewery. The food was fire, we had a mix of sandwiches (both chicken and chicken substitute) and sides. The curry and roti, nugs and tater tots for the win. Paired the spicy curry with the Tiger Lily IPA for the perfect combo.
google avatar

Jack G.

Yelp
Some of the best fried chicken I've had... with a unique Asian spin on it. It is seasoned well, and offer multiple different seasonings. My favorite is their tingly (Chinese numbing peppercorn) fried chicken sandy but you literally cannot go wrong with any of the options. Located in the st Elmo brewery at the yard, it is truly a treat to go along with a few beers at the fun atmosphere of the brewery.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
I always forget to take a picture of my food when I go here but it's always PERFECT!! I finally got there early enough to try the spicy pickles which were actually more sweet than spicy and while I don't like sweet pickle's these were DEVINE!! And the slices of onions in the cup were a nice addition (I love onions lol) I hate trying to go on my late lunch breaks because they are THAT GOOD and the line and parking is crazy; but get there early and PERFECT! SN: there's usually only like 1-2 ppl working so be kind and patient because they are great at what they're doing.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
What a gem of a place! This was such a special treat. Went with friends after a concert and we tried all three levels of spicy chicken sandwiches. They are all tasty just depends on your preference. Their slaw with papaya was a delicious surprise. Their pickles are divine. Their tots are yummy. They also have tingly tots and those will get your mouth tingly. The area is fun to sit and enjoy a drink with your meal but we took ours to go. Service was friendly and food was cooked to order. Worth the wait!
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
This just might be one of my favorite fried chicken places in all of Austin. My friends have been recommending me try for over a year now and I regret not listening to them earlier. Each piece is such a flavor bomb, just spicy enough to add a good amount of flavor without overwhelming the taste buds. The tingly tots were also a hit. I don't think I've ever had a mala sauce like that before. We ended up going on a very rainy evening. Luckily St. Elmo's had live music indoors so we grabbed a drink and hunkered down inside to enjoy our chicken and music.
google avatar

Sam K.

Yelp
Fantastic fried chicken with a perfectly crisp skin, delicious and very flavorful sauce it's mixed in. I had heard good things about this food truck and service was relatively fast and was super thankful for the food options right outside St Elmo Brewery. I wish they had a food truck closer to North Austin/Cedar Park... can't wait to be back to try some more items on their menu! Flavor: 5/5 Price: 4/5 Value: 4.5/5
google avatar

Betsy G.

Yelp
Always a hit, I don't even care if there's traffic during my lunch time I will risk it and go pick up spicy boys. It's at a food truck in st Elmo, really cool atmosphere. You cannot go wrong with anything, but the nugz (any of them) are amazing and addicting. I was also super impressed with their tarot tats, and curry. Just go already

Mag P.

Yelp
Finger licking good fried chicken!!! Bone in wings are sooooo delicious!!!! Definitely coming again!! Great crunch and sweet and spicy combo!!! They packaged the food so aesthetically pleasing!!!
google avatar

Jeremy P.

Yelp
Skip the sandwich, get the wings. Their sides have a south Asian Flare. I like their sauce- get extra ranch. Conveniently located next to some pickle ball courts and a brewery.

Dan B.

Yelp
I'm partial to dark meat for the exact reason that Spicy Boys use thighs in their sandwiches - 'cause it tastes good. I ordered the Tingly Gai sandwich since it's got two things I love - fried chicken and Szechuan cooking. However, I was not prepared for how incredibly delicious this sandwich was. Can't recommend it enough
google avatar

Mattie D.

Yelp
Why ever go to Chick-fil-A when you have Spicy Boys? It's 10x better. Service was fast and friendly. The hot gai and og where both delicious with unique flavor profiles. Tots and banana pudding are also a must. When that fried chicken craving hits, this is the spot you want to flock to.

Christian H.

Yelp
Hours say they're open till 10pm but they were already closing at 8pm. Guy was pretty rude about it too like it was my fault I magically know their hours were incorrect online.
google avatar

Loni M.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to get fried chicken! Spicy Boys is a food truck with 2 locations I believe. The one on St Elmo rd is located in the St Elmo Brewing Company. Lots of outdoor seating and you can go get a drink from the brewery while waiting for your meal. Their menu is very interesting. Fried chicken and chicken sandwiches but with different curries and roti. I've never seen this combo before but it works! I usually get their bone in chicken hot. I think it could be hotter in my opinion but it's still delicious. I also get their yellow curry with roti and WOW. So much flavor in the curry and the roti is fresh and flaky. If you are ever craving fried chicken this is the place to visit!
google avatar

Destiny L.

Yelp
You can just never go wrong with spicy boys. From the first time I tried it, I have been obsessed. The 5 piece with tater tots never disappoints. I don't know if it's by accident or pure luck but every time I go, I end up with 6 pieces of chicken and there is no complaint from me. The chicken is juicy and has a phenomenal flavor. I pop my leftovers in the oven to crisp it back up and it still taste just as amazing. Definitely one of my favorite places in Austin.
google avatar

Kaitlin F.

Yelp
THE SZECHUAN TINGLY TOTS SLAYYYEEDDDD omfg so so bomb. it's piping hot and fresh and coated in that delicious seasoning and the spicy sauce it comes with is perfect. the hot gai chicken sandwich itself wasn't super impressive tho.. i wouldn't get this again bc it was just mid, we didn't even finish it. i think the basil leaf layer was good in theory but kinda weird in practice? but DEFO come for the tingly tots they were so unique and so so good!

Leah S.

Yelp
Finally stopped by spicy boys and was not disappointed. I tried the nuggets with Thai basil ranch and have been thinking about it ever since. There's tons of picnic tables to sit at with breweries surrounding so you can grab a beer and enjoy some great food. The staff were friendly and communicative :)
google avatar

Lori S.

Yelp
I might be the only person in Austin not in love with this chicken. My son ordered the spicy nugs and tots and loved it. I ordered the classic nugs and did not like it at all. So, I'm averaging my star rating. What we both loved: service, freshness, seating area vibe. What he loved: flavor. What I did not love: the taste of sugar blended with pepper on the chicken and the tots. It just is not a flavor I enjoy.
google avatar

Catherine M.

Yelp
We were a bit early to our appointment at Tesla so looked on Yelp for a nearby place. Across the street from the dealership was an industrial building with several food and drink options. At the waaaay end of the building, tucked away was this little gem of a place. Chicken was delicious and juicy! Nice outdoor area to enjoy a bite to eat and drinks!
google avatar

Marcus R.

Yelp
The food here is so deliciously spicy!! Whew man!! First off it's a hidden gem for the Austin area. It's located right next to the St Elm Brewery. Customer service was outstanding with courtesy and efficiency! My homie and stop here for dinner. He had the chicken sandwich and I had the hot chicken wings. They're definitely not your usually wings and per homie's words "This is the best chicken sandwich ever. Popeyes and Chick-fil-A cannot compare to the taste of this chicken sandwich!" For hot chicken wings, they look like mini drumsticks! The sweet hot flavor is unique and fulfilling! Very juicy, not over fried or dry!! The tater tots are delicious and unique! Definitely not your average tater tots. I couldn't stop eating those along with the cukes. The cukes were spicy but good! Definitely check this place out and try it! I am definitely coming back for lunch one day.
google avatar

Nathan F.

Yelp
An Austin staple for spicy fried chicken, not many do better than Spicy boys! Some of the best seasoned chicken you'll have, tots and sides that are delightful and creative sauces for everyone to enjoy.
google avatar

Jason W.

Yelp
Picked up dinner for our family of 4 from Spicy Boys. Online ordering was very easy and our order was completed at the time that was promised. Food was excellent, we will definitely be back.
google avatar

Oscar R.

Yelp
They were fast, the food was great, and it was super easy to get to while also enjoying a beer at St. Elmo's. It's super flavorful, and I liked the many different options.
google avatar

Lulu K.

Yelp
3Fs: Fast, fair priced, and fried Took less than 10 mins to get food Two chicken sandwich and tots were like $27 The sandwich and tots were decent tasting but i probably will not go again. Customer service was great tho, and the atmosphere was nice and open in a dusty construction area
google avatar

Christian R.

Yelp
Food is good the beers also great at this location. Service was kind of butt, but overall the vibe of the place is nice
google avatar

Jeremy M.

Yelp
Here's a hot tip, get the tingly nugs and a cold beer and sit outside enjoying the sun. The nugs are made with thigh meat making them extra juicy and delicious.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Oh. my. goodness. Spicy Boys is doing fried chicken right. The coating of the fried chicken has a beauuutiful crunch as the flavors take over your mouth. Whatever they put in the seasoning is addicting because the five pieces were devoured within in minutes. There's a kick of heat, ever so slight from the chili oil that contrasts perfectly with the sweet chili honey. It'll be unlike any other chicken you've had previously. Tots were also hot and crispy! Next time I'm in Austin, I can guarantee you'll find me here. Make sure to order through your phone- all ordering is done online!
google avatar

Roma B.

Yelp
Was looking for a spot to grab a quick lunch, found this food truck nearby. Got the OG sandwich, loved the crispiness of the fried chicken and thai basil on top. Very fresh, flavors balanced each other out well, not too strong. Definitely recommend if you're looking for an east asian tasting chicken sandwich.
google avatar

Alice D.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday evening for an early dinner and we placed our orders quickly after scanning the menu. It wasn't a huge selection, but everything looked good and affordable nonetheless. The food came within 10 minutes which was awesome. There's a brewery that the truck shares space with it seems so it was pretty easy finding seats. The som tam was honestly much smaller than we had imagined and that was a little disappointing, but the taste was just what we wanted for a papaya-esque salad. The wings were fantastic - super crunchy, huge, and flavorful. Truly worth the price and the portion was great! I definitely wouldn't mind ordering it again. Overall, great casual dinner and awesome service. I would love to come again if I'm ever in the area!
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
We grabbed food to-do from here the other night. The online ordering was super easy and they were on time. Parking and pickup was easy too! Wish we could've stayed but it was freezing outside ... The outdoor seating area was super cute :). On to the food... My favorites were the tater tots and chicken nuggets by far. Both were seasoned to taste amaaaazing, and the dipping sauce that came with it was bomb too! The roti with panang curry... I could've done without. Mostly due to the serving size being so small... The flavors were good, though. The som tam was a nice inexpensive snack. If you feel the need to have veggies it's a good choice We also got a chicken sandwich.. honestly I'd skip this as the fillings just aren't very substantial... It's mostly just chicken. Overall, they have some pretty tasty food. If you're in the area give them a try - especially if you're in the mood for snacking :)
google avatar

Veronica T.

Yelp
A slam dunk! Waited entirely too long to try this place, especially since it's not far from my office. I ordered the Korean Buffalo Wings (special menu item). It was 6 wings (half flappers/half drummets) tossed in a medium-heat Korean buffalo sauce with gochujang, nori, scallion, sesame furikake and served with fresh lime wedges. The wings were cooked perfectly.. not soggy... not pink/red in the middle... not rubbery... not overly salty. They seemed cooked from fresh chicken... not frozen. The spices were perfectly balanced and the sauce was plentiful. The servers were friendly and everything seemed clean. I only waited about 5 minutes for my order, although it wasn't very busy at the time. They give you plenty of napkins and some hand wipes with your order... nice touch!! Can't wait to try some of their other menu items!!
google avatar

Nikkita F.

Yelp
This fried chicken was delicious and so flavorful! It's a perfect accompaniment to the beer at St.Elmo's. It's also pretty light for fried chicken so it doesn't feel insanely heavy with the beer plus the heat. Can't wait to try more on their menu!
google avatar

Ellie C.

Yelp
We were at St. Elmo and decided to give this cute pink food truck a try! And omg their spicy fried chicken is now officially my favorite in town!!! It's sooo delicious and the rotis + curry are great too. The guys on the food truck were all very nice. Can't wait to order again soon!!

Yelp
So good! A food truck set alongside St. Elmo's Brewery, super casual atmosphere and the food was delightfully surprising with innovative flavor fusions. Even though the name says Chicken, they have much more, including a variety of enticing vegetarian options. The hot spicy we ordered as an appetizer was SO good. Our party of 6 with varying food preferences was enthusiastic about everything they chose and would go back if in the area again.
