"Spicy Water African Grill brings Ivorian cuisine to DC in all its glory. The restaurant serves up peppery kebab sandwiches (chicken or beef), smoky charcoal-grilled chicken platters, and crispy fried red snapper with fresh onions and peppers. While you can get in and out in under 15 minutes for a quick dinner or lunch, the upstairs dining room is the best place to eat. There’s a hodgepodge of wooden tables and chairs occupied by mild-mannered uncles watching a 2022 Olympic basketball match between the USA and France on loop. It’s here, while cracking into sharply spiced crispy snapper tails and tearing into flaky pieces of chicken, that you’ll finally understand why your mama used to scold you for making it look like you weren’t being fed at home. Shoveling generous handfuls of fries drizzled with peppery tomato stew is worth every disapproving look. " - tristiana hinton, omnia saed

"You'll hear the fish being fried before you see it at Spicy Water African Grill. The U Street restaurant brings Ivorian cuisine to life, in all its glory. photo credit: Nina Palazzolo When you walk up the front steps of the mint-green row house, you’re greeted by the smell of cayenne pepper, garlic, and onion wafting from the open kitchen. You’ll feel like a kid again, reminded of the days when the sounds and smell of dinner being whipped up in the kitchen meant that something amazing was coming. At Spicy Water, that amazing something takes the form of peppery kebab sandwiches with your choice of chicken or beef, smoky charcoal-grilled chicken platters, and crispy fried red snapper tossed with fresh onions and peppers. Popular sides include attiéké, an Ivorian classic made with ground cassava, and sweet plantains that go with just about everything. Inside, you'll spot dedicated fans who've been with the restaurant since its pop-up days at Eastern Market. Neighbors and workers pop in for a quick lunch, sneaking out the door without much chat. The unspoken rule here is good food speaks for itself. In other words, save the small talk for another day. If you’re not in a rush, head to the upstairs dining room where a hodgepodge of wooden tables and chairs are occupied by mild-mannered uncles watching a 2022 Olympic basketball match between the USA and France on loop (same game every single time we've visited). Whether you’re eating solo, hunched over a plate of cassava leaf stew, or coming in after a mildly disappointing night out on U Street with your “we’re outside” friends, Spicy Water African Grill is here to remind you that good food has that magical way of making just about everything better. Food Rundown photo credit: Nina Palazzolo Grilled Chicken with Fries The real magic of this dish happens with the grilled chicken's skin, it’s where all the incredible flavor (pepper, garlic, onion) sit and when paired with thick steak-cut fries, sweet plantains, and Ivorian ketchup you might find yourself getting emotional with every bite. photo credit: Nina Palazzolo Beef Kebab Sandwich Thick and toasted slices of French-style baguettes are generously filled with peppered beef, off the grill, and freshly tossed onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers. It’s a filling on-the-go sandwich, perfect for lunch—or 2am snack if you find yourself drifting in at closing on the weekends. photo credit: Nina Palazzolo Fried Snapper Make sure you have a good 30-45 minutes when you order this because each one is cooked to order. But as soon as you see that crispy, golden outer layer, you’ll regret nothing. Served on a bed of pickled onions and a peppery tomato stew, the trio of flavors are nothing short of glorious. photo credit: Nina Palazzolo Ginger Juice For a palate cleanser and a refreshing break from all the meat and fish, try the restaurant’s housemade ginger juice. It’s sweet and savory, with a peppery kick from all that ginger." - Omnia Saed

Was fortunate to see their tent at the Capital Harvest at the Plaza. We tried the chicken kebab salad and beef kebab. Everything was so flavorful and FRESH! The salad was delicious. Even the bread is really good! And their portions are generous- especially on the salad. I highly recommend!

Great food, I enjoyed the snapper and the jollof rice is great! I would’ve expected to have slightly more plantains for the side but the food was tasty overall. I believe the more formal dining room is a floor above but we chose to sit outside.

Food was great! But the service is very poor. Prior to coming I placed an order for pick up over the phone, but once I got there I was told they didn’t have any order for me. So I had to have them make it and wait even longer. During this time the staff weren’t being friendly whatsoever. After receiving my food, I asked for spicy sauce, and asked for two. I was then yelled at and told I can only have one, even if I was paying for an extra one. Food was good, but the entire experience will not have me returning. If you love African food, but dislike poor service I wouldn’t suggest this place for you.

Had a 3 day conference in DC and discovered this little cozy African restaurant during my google search, located not too far from the Washington Convention Center. Chef Durant was very professional and friendly. Third time to eat the famous "Attieke" and was by far the best I've ever had. I also appreciated the fact that the restroom was clean. Overall a 5⭐ experience and would definitely be back. Merci encore pour le délicieux repas et bonne CAN aux Ivoiriens 😉

Definitely a hidden gem. They recently open the top level for indoor dining and the place is beautiful. My wife and I had the exact same entry. We had fried Red Snapper, Jollof Rice, and Cassava Leaf(doesn't normally come with but paid extra to have it). Best food I've had in a long time.

I first heard of Spicy Water (cool name, eh?) from Eastern Market and liked them ever since. Thing is, I'm not even really a "sandwich person." But they got me. ME! I had been meaning to go back to Eastern Market eventually to get another fix, but it's not super close to where I live, so I hadn't made it back yet. When I found out about a week ago that they were near my neighborhood? Oh, the decision was already made. Dinner is served. Enter (my belly): Spicy Water. It's been about 2 weeks and two orders later and I'm still satisfied. I tried their beef kebab sandwich for the first time. The chicken kebab sandwich was the first and second one that I tried, and it was *muah muah*, mm mm. You know what that means. I don't have to tell you what that means. But I'm going to anyway. It was delicious, guys. If you have not tried Spicy Water at Eastern market or their new location right off U Street Corridor—why? Repent. LoL 😆. But really 😐. The sandwich I haven't tried yet is the shrimp kebob sandwich 🦐, but this will be rectified soon enough. Happy to have them near my hood!! 🤙🏾🤙🏾🙌🏾

This place is amazing 💜 We met them at Eastern Market. Loved them there and love them even more at their new restaurant here. Awesome food with generous portions for big eaters. Nice quiet chill ambiance just a half a block from busy U street. Special ✨
