Fast-Casual Greek Taverna Expands to La Jolla | Eater San Diego

"The downtown La Jolla offshoot has an updated, clean look inspired by the island of Santorini and occupies a 1,200-square-foot Prospect Street space with an outdoor patio. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the fast-casual menu features traditional home recipes from friends and family and Greek street food, with an all-day selection ranging from meze starters to gyro and souvlaki sandwiches and entrees such as pastitsio, moussaka and slow-roasted lamb shanks; desserts are made in-house and include classic baklava and rice pudding. The family intends to expand the Spiro’s Mediterranean Cuisine concept and is looking at more coastal locations in San Diego." - Candice Woo

My friend and I split the gyro platter (beef and lamb). Had a good amount of meat (crispy) with a good amount of fries and pita bread. Ask for a little less dressing on the salad if you prefer it not so wet. We had three girls with us and they all got the kids menu with chicken nuggets and fries. Less than $10 each. The happy hour wine for $7.00 was pretty impressive with the selection and their HH choices looked pretty good too. The ladies behind the counter were very nice and helpful.

Google
We were walking around La Jolla and found this spot. The person serving was very kind and I don’t think I’ve ever had a gyro that had so much filling/meat! The Gyro fries were amazing too and the restaurant had calm vibes. Our food was served very fast too.

Google
Nice location, quieter than the other restaurants in La Jolla as it tends to be crowded usually. The food is good and customer service is great.

Google
I was drawn to check this place out because it’s absolutely beautiful, and I loved the nostalgic Christmas music they were playing. It was lovely, relaxing, and I needed a place to get a bite and relax for a while. The menu was varied with multiple options, and not as expensive as I’d expect for downtown La Jolla. I got a bowl of Lentil soup. I took off one star because the soup was REALLY salty and the tzatziki sauce was not as good as I’ve had elsewhere. But I would definitely come back to try some other menu items. The lady behind the counter was absolutely lovely… friendly, warm and professional. She made me feel at home.

Google
Nice location with average food. We ate here one afternoon during happy hour. We got a couple of the happy hour specials: beef kebabs, meatballs as well as a platter from the regular menu. The location is nice. They have a convenient outdoor patio. The food was not very good. The beef arrived cold and overdone. The platter was ok though on the small side. I was hoping for more carefully prepared food to match the location.

Google
Order at the counter then sit down. Limited Seating inside but more outside with heat lamps. Good choices on the menu but they were out of a lot of food like kebabs & fries.we ordered the calamari and gyros platter which were good.

Google
Will never go here again. First visit, I asked for some Tzaikiki to go and was denied. Second time I ordered the Gyro fries and it came with no pepperoncinis, 2 olives, 2 tomato chunks and 3 slices of onion. Basically meat and fries

Google
Had a relaxing and extremely tasty dinner here. Our seats by the window had a fantastic sunset view. This is a small spot, but they do also have outdoor seating and it felt very relaxed when I was there. I had the Spiro's Sampler as a meal and the portions were generous, the taste of everything was spot on. The falafel was the perfect texture and a tiny bit of spice that was just right. The dolmades we're almost pickley which I love. The hummus had a hint of spice and was great paired with the olives. The red pepper spread was the start of the show for me. I took a baklava cheesecake slice home with me and enjoyed it later in the evening, the flavor was so decadent if slightly dry for my taste, but that didn't keep me from enjoying the whole slice. The staff was very friendly and helpful when we had questions. Also very attentive during our meal to make sure we had all we needed. Accessibility: variety of chair types to choose from for those with mobility or pain issues. Several of the tables have chair configurations that could easily be swapped around if needed to accommodate wheelchairs or mobility scooters. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

Yelp
This place is café like, clean and looks really good. Their food is good, we had the plate which from past experience can easily shared by 2. We ordered the felafel side which was done really well. They provide ample sauces too along with a good amount of fries on their platters. The baklava was really good and made with honey so had a great taste! The service was good with attentive staff. Worth a visit!

Yelp
I thought this place was a job well done for Mediterranean in La Jolla Village. It was definitely on the pricier but that's also something you have to keep in mind when you're in La Jolla Village. Everything else is so expensive around this area just because of the demographic so I wasn't necessarily upset about that. I do think it is weird to have tipping options when you have to get up and fill your own drinks and do everything yourself, I don't know. Maybe that's just a me thing. The gyro was good, it was lacking a little on the tzatziki sauce, but the meat in it was absolutely delicious so it made up for the lack of tzatziki. I did ask for extra side of tzatziki, especially for my french fries, because the gyro was a little bit dry without more tzatziki to be honest. I do think that the meal was very filling they give you a hefty side of french fries alongside the gyro, an overall I was happy with my purchase for the price I paid. I do feel like it was a substantial amount of food and I didn't leave hungry. Overall, a nice experience. The inside was very clean and cute, but it was expensive, but I'm also not a super wealthy person living in La Jolla like 95% of people that live here lol.

Yelp
For a more casual place I was really impressed by the food. They provided to meat stick when most places only provide one. They are really great with gluten restriction and the staff were overwhelmingly friendly.
google avatar

Sonia H.

Yelp
Food was sub par. The lentil soup was basically lentils and bland water. My fish and chips. The fish was very greasy and tough. The lamb kebabs were OK. The meat could I use a little more seasoning.

Behzad A.

Yelp
Just had two gyros sandwiches for lunch they're served on homemade breads portions are generous food is very tasty and above all water is cucumber flavored What else can you want? Staff were also friendly

Yelp
Food: Gyro platter with Fries: Standard gyro meat taste and texture. Nothing special here. Standard Americanized pita slices, nothing to write home about. Unfortunately the fries were not salted and the "salad" composed of iceberg lettuce, a minuscule amount of feta, a few olives, and pepperchinis. The sides left a lot to be desired here. Sauce included was a small amount, definitely not enough for me. Fish and Chips: Fish was good, tasty and melted nicely. Had to ask for lemon slices on the side. Fries were again underseasoned. Again, only one small side dollop of tartar sauce. When we went there were no salt shakers on any of the tables. Price: My price was $48.00 for these two dishes. In my opinion, that's highway robbery for a place that you order at a kiosk and are not waited on. I did not know that upon ordering, so I tipped 18%. Won't be tipping if I ever go back again. We had to physically get up and go to the register to ask for anything that we needed. Ambiance: Super sunny. Not enough inside tables and not enough umbrellas outside to cover the outside tables. Seats were comfortable enough. Overall: Spend your money elsewhere. Unless you are craving an Americanized Mediterranean meal that's overpriced, there is not a reason to me to eat here. There are so many different restaurant options on this strip that I highly recommend actually browsing around instead of eating here.

Noa G.

Yelp
I got the lamb/beef gyro platter. It was pretty good but my rice was kind of hard. The salad was good but there wasn't a lot of dressing on it. The service was amazing! The inside was clean.

Yelp
SUCH A WEIRD PLACE (2 stars) It was the least busiest restaurant in the area and now I know why! - FOOD: meh - PRICE: meh - SERVICE: weird and terrible at the same time - AMBIANCE: meh They had a "Happy Hour menu" perfect for light bites that drew the attention to come in. Reminds me of a vendor that would be at a mall's food court and not a restaurant in the heart of La Jolla. Order and pay at the counter and have a seat. So we are defaulted to a screen to tip 18-25% on a service we have yet to receive or get our food. Service isn't good so think twice about that screen. :: SERVICE :: Unorganized and W-E-I-R-D. First that I noticed, the waitress bringing back plates and letting the other staff know something wasn't liked by the customer. Waitress who handled the register/money/cleaning/serving didn't take my order and some other lady who appears to be like a manager took my order. The table was half cleaned and it was brought to attention only for that lady to say "she's (waitress) going to clean it now". But it was obvious the waitress didn't have intentions to clean the table unless told to because it was brought to attention. Also observed other customers sending back their orders because something was off with their food. A customer (they just served) goes to the counter asking for the code to use the restroom only to be told by the manager lady "restrooms are for paying customers only" and he replied "but I am a paying customer" for waitress to not say anything while this exchange was happening. That was so rude of them to say, passing judgement (in whatever way) without realizing they just served him. FYI, He contributes to your paycheck. I asked for a box for my left overs to be told by the waitress "yes" (as if she's going to get it right away which is steps away from the table) but she never comes back. Lol. Uhm ok. Had to get up and hover to get a a to-go box. :: ORDER :: "Happy Hour Menu" FILET MIGNON KABOB ($7) - one kabob with 3 pieces of filet mignon on it. When it arrived I thought it was a joke, something THAT small for seven dollars on a "happy hour menu" and it doesn't look that appetizing... (sorry for the disturbing comparison). But I will say it was surprisingly very tender, juicy, and flavorful. That still doesn't justify the price for it. RECOMMEND GARLIC PARMESAN FRIES ($7) - soggy fries with shaved pieces of Parmesan on top. The fries tasted as if they were cooked earlier that day and out to the side - they were lukewarm when I received them. Also, seven dollars for happy hour prices for weak fries. DO NOT RECOMMEND LA CROIX ($3.95) - in a can. Nothing special we all know what La Croix taste like and shouldn't be that much for a canned drink. Until the next review..

Yelp
We had a delightful lunch on a weekday recently. We tried both types of gyros, chicken and beef/lamb combo. They arrived hot, fresh and generously filled with the shaved rotisserie meats. Neither of us was able to eat more than about 1/2 of our sandwiches. It made for a very tasty and reasonabley priced meal in downtown La Jolla.

Yelp
We have a Mediterranean place outside of Seattle that we love and go to frequently. We just ate at Spiro's, and they kind of ruined our local place for us. Their giro meat was just so delicious and cooked so well, probably the best we've ever had. I wish we had found this place sooner than the last night of our trip - we would have definitely been back.

Yelp
Spiro' is the best Mediterranean food I've had in San Diego. The food is fresh, service is excellent and if you like Mediterranean food, this is the place to go. We are visiting San Diego and have already gone there twice in one week. My husband had the falafel & I had the chicken skewer meal. Unbelievable fabulous. You can't go wrong with this restaurant.

Yelp
Everything was too salty. Very aesthetically pleasing vibes though for a sunny day in La Jolla. Friendly service and plenty of space to sit and eat. Fast casual. Order at a counter and they bring it out. My gyro meat was salty and overcooked. Mildly disappointed. Wanted to love this spot.

Yelp
I had a very pleasant experience at Spiro's Mediterranean Cuisine. We walked in and ordered at the front cashier, which was quick and easy. I decided to go with the Lamb Gyro Sandwich, fries, and a drink. After a long day, you have no idea how refreshing it is when a place has house-made iced tea! Now, let's get back to the sandwich! This place doesn't mess around and is very generous when it comes to the meat and fries! The atmosphere is very chill, and I absolutely love the architecture. It's a casual spot, perfect for enjoying a Gyro sandwich. Don't sleep on this place, people--you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Excellent lunch spot. Good food, wine if you want it, great service in clean and beautiful atmosphere. Decent prices too. Perfect place for our family to stop for lunch on our day out.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
Not quality Greek/Mediterranean food, tried a variety of meats and they all came out pretty dry. Flies are everywhere and staff doesn't seem to get along so plates were sitting out of the kitchen waiting to be served for a while. No one in the kitchen is wearing gloves or hair nets and one older woman had long blonde hair. This same woman was eating the food while preparing in the kitchen. Very off putting. I didn't check the reviews beforehand, but now see nearly everyone has commented on this same woman. The establishment is really pretty and located walking distance to the beach. The lady who took our order was very sweet, I just think sanitary efforts could be greatly improved on.

Yelp
How could you guys be out of olives?... you're a Greek restaurant. Hummus was good but not worth the 45 minute wait.
google avatar

Leels K.

Yelp
The location, vibe & food was great! Would definitely recommend! We went for happy hour & LOVED the Gyro Flatbread!
google avatar

Lia G.

Yelp
Great service - friendly and quick. Food was all delicious, though the kids pizza was a slightly smaller than anticipated portion size. Gyro fries were a perfect starter. We also had the falafel platter, burger, and chicken salad.
google avatar

Sharlyn G.

Yelp
Food was excellent! Service was outstanding Ambience was perfect! Overall we had a great experience at this restaurant
google avatar

Yelp
The location is very nice and convenient. The food was okay. The chicken was good, but the lamb was a little dry. Sides were tasty.
google avatar

Pauli Y.

Yelp
Second time coming here. The moussaka plate and chicken kabob plate are so yummy! Huge portions and you get a little bit of everything.

Myazz I.

Yelp
My wife and I split a sampler platter and enjoyed the day outside , we thoroughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Food was a small portion of burnt scraps of meat. The servers inside don't seem to care and barely had an expression on their faces when I mentioned it to them. When they remade the food they gave me back just a slightly larger portion of burnt scraps of meat. If you have been to any Greek restaurant I'm pretty sure it's better than this. Food is awful. They don't deserve business until they start showing they care.

C S.

Yelp
WARNING: the filet mignon is inedible. I wouldn't feed it to a dog. That being said, the Spiro's Sampler was delicious and superb quality. The chicken was also very good for the price. Service and location were also good.

Larry W.

Yelp
After an afternoon of watching sea life and hitting the shops, my wife and I found Spiro's and thought we would give it a shot. The staff were absolutely amazing and smiled so much we decided to have the baklava after lunch. Everything was beyond amazing. The place was spotless the food came out quickly . I'm not sure why anyone would give this place less than 5 stars! Thanks for a great meal and a place to cool down.

Eddy E.

Yelp
When you complain and no one takes the time to even respond? You know who your dealing with and what to expect. Horrible costumers service, no wonder it's the only empty restaurant in all of prospect!!!
google avatar

Desiree L.

Yelp
Enjoyed a nice lunch here; had gyros and chicken kabob plates with rice, Greek salad, pita and tahini sauce. The food was cooked well, flavorful and fresh. There's a really nice seating area outside with a good view of the shore. Definitely recommend for a casual lunch or dinner.

Barry S.

Yelp
Great lunch and the lady who took our order, likely the owner, was super nice to our special needs daughter. Food was very good.
google avatar

Olivia L.

Yelp
I had a pleasant experience here, that is all I have to say. Yes, it is pricier than most places in the area but would you rather fill your vessel with that pancake garbage next door? Some yelpers seem to think so.
google avatar

Dung N.

Yelp
I attended their 1 year anniversary and liked their samplings so much that I've gone back twice already! The first time I went back, I had to get their famous saganaki, which is fried cheese, but they present it with a giant flaming fire! For my main dish, I got the grilled lamb chops, served with a small Greek salad, fries, and pitta bread. It was delicious and very hearty! Their baklava and kourambiethes are both great desserts that I took home to enjoy. The second time, I took my friend here since we were in the area. I wanted to try the lamb and beef gyro plater, which came with classic Greek salad, tzatziki and pita bread, and fries. She chose the recommended chicken gyro pita. My entree was huge and so filling. The lamb and beef meat was very tasty and I absolutely love their fries. Service was great and welcoming. We sat outside in their patio, which was pretty hot since there wasn't much shade. Overall, I love their food and highly recommend them to get your Mediterranean cuisine fix.
google avatar

Vijay S.

Yelp
Good spot for Mediterranean/Greek food near La Jolla Cove. Got the lentil and vegetable soup which was pretty good. The chicken kabob platter had enough food for 2 people (if you're not very hungry). The chicken was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious with the yoghurt sauce. Overall very good experience.

Karen W.

Yelp
Not the first or even second time my order was delivered with incorrect meat. Even after leaving a detailed request for chicken gyro NOT beef or lamb the order arrived with beef. Specifically stated if no chicken gyro meat just refund. Spiro's seems to ignore food allergy requests. Tired of wasting money and throwing food from Spiro's in the trash.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I think the quality and customer service have gone down significantly or maybe because it was TO-GO they figured we didn't care. The biggest gripe that we had was with the sampler, typically, and in the past the sampler was hearty and full of a good amount of the different falafel and items. This time, after going all the way home we saw that they only gave 2 of each item, a measly scoop of hummus and a random handful of lettuce. Then as if it even made any sense there was double the amount of pita bread... I don't know if this was an off day, but a sampler that is $20+ bucks should be more substantial and packed with more care. I doubt we are going to be giving any more money to this establishment, I am disappointed because in the past I never had such bad portions, and you can blame inflation but this is not okay.

Marc S.

Yelp
Good gyro sandwich. Loads of meat. Could use a little more tomato in my opinion. Service is excellent. Nice outdoor and indoor seating.

Yelp
Spiro's Mediterranean Cuisine is located in La Jolla area of San Diego. One of my foodie friends invited me here in mid-September 2021 for their one year anniversary. According to their website, their original location is located in Coronado area of San Diego. I tried the following - (1) Hummus (2) Spanikopita (3) Tabouleh (4) Baklava Nom Nom Nom!! Enjoy!!
google avatar

Vin S.

Yelp
Spiro's Mediterranean Cuisine is a hit! The food is great, the prices are solid, and the location - well, its La Jolla Village, right? Actually, this corner has been a challenge for restaurants. It's not fronting on any of the major walking areas, so you kinda have to know it is here in order to find it. And parking can be tough. In any case, I certainly hope they stay open and build a regular clientele. The food is much better than many of the other local places, which seem designed to cater to tourists, many of whom don't care how much or how good. I have tried several items off the menu, including the lovely Greek-style fish tacos (which were great), but my favorite is their Horiatiki Village Salad, which comes with wonderful and fresh ingredients. Please give Spiro's a try for lunch or dinner next time you are in the area. They are worth it!

Yelp
5/5 Ambiance: clean, modern decor with traditional Greek music playing and a lit backdrop of Greek architecture on the wall. 5/5 lamb kabob: freshly prepared off the grill, tender, and full of lamb flavor 5/5 mahi tacos: surprisingly hot temperature, perfectly cooked mahi, even the taco wraps tasted special, with sweet diced tomato, crisp cabbage, fresh sliced cilantro, and a side of salsa with a kick. These are near the top for some of the best tacos I have had. 5/5 service: friendly staff with good recommendations Happy hour is Monday through Friday 3-6pm but I prefer ordering off of it next time. The slow roasted lamb shank will be the motivation for my next visit.

Yelp
Delicious food, I got the gyros sandwich and lentil soup, abundant and amazing!!! Service is incredible and very nice ambiance

Amnon A.

Yelp
Make edible food. Had lunch with a Greek friend, and were disgusted by the food quality. This is as close to good Greek food as the US is to china. My friend had the Avgolemono soup with a skewer of chicken kabob and found the chicken in both dishes to be dry stringy and overcooked. I had a Greek salad with chicken gyros. The chicken. Was very dry and appeared not fresh. The salad was unappealing and there was very little feta. Both of us did not finish our food and left more than half of our dishes. Be warned! Do not try to eat at this place!
google avatar

Patrick V.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Nice clean Mediterranean style decor. Not tacky or cheap looking. Food: Prices are a little high but it's appropriate for the area. $10 for falafel sandwich and only three pieces of falafel. It tasted good but was missing pickles. Also the slices of tomato they use are absolutely massive wedges. Service: POS style ordering. Friendly staff but they didn't give me any napkins. Kitchen is very slow
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
We were pretty pumped to try Spiro's, as it is a welcome addition to the La Jolla restaurant scene. We don't really have a reliable place to go for food here so we were happy to try this. We also love Greek food and the fast casual format. The inside of the space was inviting, with ample seating for our group of four. The menu had lots to choose from, so we got Greek salad, spanakopita, and baklava for dessert. Friendly service, fast preparation, reasonable prices, and we even scored parking around the corner. What's not to like?
google avatar

Shawn A.

Yelp
Overall we were very pleased. I loved my lamb kabob gyro. Generous portions of well seasoned and well cooked but still very juicy chunks with their pita bread, cucumber sauce, tomatoes and onions, plus feta cheese. Also the side fries were fresh and tasty. I liked the smaller fries and the feta cheese on top made it unique. The second dish was just ok as the grilled chicken on top of primarily green lettuce salad was so simple a bit pricey for the type of greens used. The draft beer selection is good and makes the visit more enjoyable. Also, the service was very friendly and timely the seating was Covid appropriate. So a solid 4 star for the combination of the experience. But if you like Greek food and you're in La Jolla I'd recommend this place.
google avatar

Emmett T.

Yelp
Spiro's Greek Cafe has made its way north from Coronado to Prospect St in the village of La Jolla. Their corner suite is downstairs from Cold Stone Creamery where the Hard Rock Cafe used to reside. The parking situation is pretty good as numerous spots were available nearby along Fay Ave. Several tables were set up outside on the sidewalk for on-site dining. The menu is a replication of what is offered at the other location with starters, soups, salads, gyro/pita sandwiches, platters, comfort dishes, and desserts. I ordered the Dolmades & Pita as a starter. The olive leaves were stuffed with rice pilaf and feta cheese. It came as five pieces along with some pita bread. The taste was about as expected. My entree was the Mousaka which was made of baked layers of eggplant, potatoes, ground beef, tomatoes, and onions topped with béchamel sauce and parmesan cheese. Rice, salad, and pita slices were the sides. If I had known the serving size was going to be this hefty, then I should have passed on the stuffed olive leaves. Plenty of flavors were packed into the layers. I enjoyed this item enough to give the eatery a four star rating.

Rakhi B.

Yelp
Such a great location and plenty of seating areas with heat lamps I have been looking for a place that serves tabuli and it was amazing..also got dolmas and spanakopita..all good food. They all came with pita and got a side hummus and that was good too. Plenty of food and great price. The staff was so nice and quick service
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
The service here was quick and friendly and there was lots of outdoor seating! I really enjoyed the Greek salad and chicken kabob. The chicken kabob was delicious and the pita bread was good as well. The tzatziki could've been more flavorful and the chicken in the gyro wasn't as good, but we still enjoyed our experience here! Would come again to try other menu items. :)

rachel n.

Yelp
I would give this place a 15/10 if I could!!! Exceptional dining experience from the minute we walked in. Jared took our order at the counter and he was an absolute delight. He was so friendly and welcoming and chatty, and he gave GREAT recommendations! We had the delish house red cab, the spanakopitas (chefs kiss), and then we got a lamb gyro platter and a chicken kebab platter. These platters had it alllll. My lamb absolutely stole the show, the rice pilaf was a fabulous flavorful surprise, and the greek salad was to die for. We couldn't put our forks down, and we still each had a full box to take home. We enjoyed our meal in the cozy outdoor couch area by a fire pit. We were so glad that we happened upon Spiro's and cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
Their calamari and Gyros are the must haves! Great view of the waterfront from the outdoor sitting area.

Yelp
Excellent falafel plate. Great option for vegans. Fast and very courteous service. Will come back again if in the area.

Yelp
We were looking for a special place to have lunch. We found it at Spiro's Mediterranean Cuisine. The food was very delicious and reasonably priced. We can't wait to go back there in the future. It is now our favorite restaurant in La Jolla. We'll be back! Everyone was very helpful and kind. Good customer service is important to us, I'm deaf and appreciate the big and little things that make a place special.
