The Newest Restaurants In Chicago

"This casual Lincoln Park Polish spot comes from the same team behind Pierogi Kitchen and Wurst Behavior. Similar to its bratwurst-centric sibling, Spoko’s menu also has housemade sausages, along with sandwiches like open-faced zapiekanka or maczanka full of pulled meat, plus brunch on the weekends." - john ringor, veda kilaru, nick allen

Spoko Will Replace Ella’s BBQ in Lincoln Park | Eater Chicago

"A revamped restaurant opening across from Lincoln Park High School on Wednesday, February 26 at 723 W. Armitage Avenue, replacing Ella’s BBQ. The restaurant's name means “chill” or “no problem” in Polish. The concept offers a modern take on Polish street food that taps into global influences as well as those from the couple’s adopted city, Chicago, with two styles of Polish sandwiches as the focus. “We are going back to our roots and showcasing our culture and our food scene in a big way,” says Wnorowski. One centerpiece is zapiekanka, or “zapi” for short, a toasted open-face sandwich that has been a Polish street food staple since the 1970s: traditionally a sliced baguette topped with onions, mushrooms, and melted cheese, with ketchup and green onions as typical accoutrements and a variety of additional toppings available. To start, Wnorowski’s 14-inch-long zapis will include a shrimp po’boy version (fried shrimp, lettuce, tomato); a ham-and-pineapple-topped one; and a prosciutto, fig, and arugula version. The other focus is maczanka, with a deeper history in Poland dating back to the 19th century when the grab-and-go pulled pork sandwich was popular with carriage drivers and students; the version here uses pork and beef brisket that’s been smoked and roasted overnight and topped with pickled red cabbage, Swiss cheese, and pickles. “I’m coming full circle with my barbecue skills,” says Wnorowski. For both sandwiches, Wnorowski is working with West Town’s famous Italian bakery D’Amato’s for the bread: a freshly baked baguette works well for his zapis, says Wnorowski — the soft insides absorb the juices and spices from the cooked mushrooms — and a custom hamburger-style bun, derived from D’Amato’s baguette, will be used for the maczanka sandwiches. The menu will be rounded out with a handful of housemade sausages from the couple’s sausage concept and pierogi from their pierogi concept, along with other popular dishes. The beverage program will focus on European and local beers, and the space features a patio with a beer-garden vibe." - Lisa Shames

Google
Good to have more Polish restaurant options near the east side of Chicago, but Spoko is decent just not mind-blowing as all the other reviews would lead you to believe. I've tried a sampling of items and everything was just fine. Their zapiekanki use Swiss cheese rather than something like Edam, which melts a bit more liquidy than how the cheese should traditionally be firmer. This just makes the whole sandwich not as crispy as how it should be. The beet one was unique but again soggy and soft with way too many greens packed on top. Potato pancakes were odd and not really traditional, even down to the way they were shredded. Not sure why a kotlet is on the menu for street food - maybe because it's served with fries to keep it "street food esque" where it's really more fitting for it to be served with mashed potatoes? Also the cucumber salad ("mizeria") never has the cucumber skins left on. It was interesting to see some unique menu items but again everything is just average and not really worth 5 stars as most people so generously leave on reviews nowadays. I think sister restaurant Pierogi Kitchen is a better dining experience overall with better atmosphere, the sandwich options here don't really necessitate visiting Spoko over that unless it's due to location.

What a great little gem. Spoko s a laid back space with great service and amazing food. I tried to polish platter to get a taste of everything. The house made sausage was outstanding and very well flavored. The potato pancake with fried to perfection and still very soft in the center. I also have the best salad with was prepared delightfully and presented very well. I would definitely recommend a visit for a laid back corner bar/restaurant experience.

Google
Great spot for brunch, they had fun classic options with a Polish twist, like pierogi eggs Benedict, a breakfast sandwich with polish sausage, and potato pancakes with eggs. All of the food was good and the service was nice as well. It got a bit busy for brunch on a Saturday but we beat the later crowd by getting there around 2pm and were seated with no wait.

Google
The spicy polish sausage is legendary. Perfectly carmelized onions, grilled peppers, and a slightly sweet sauce on a fresh crispy baguette. The pierogis were great too but a bit expensive.

Was really quite impressed with the food here! The pierogis were delicious and crisped to perfection on the outside, the only thing I felt was missing was some sauerkraut on the side. The highlight of the meal, and what I’d 100% return for, was the mushroom maczanka. The bread, the sauce, the beef - everything was perfect. Happy hour specials are decent too, good for a drink and a small bite.

Got the brussels sprouts, polish platter and the zapki with beets. This was all so nice as it reminded me of my moms cooking. The patio was in a really nice area as well!

Ella’s BBQ may be gone, but Spoko has kept the BBQ spirit alive, with the added bonus of Polish dishes on the menu. Ordering is easy, and while it’s not a quick in-and-out spot, it’s a great place to catch up with friends. The space has a glass garage door, which adds character but can make it a bit chilly in the winter and stuffy in the summer. I really like the chicken kebab, and the milkshakes are thick, rich, and delicious. Definitely worth a visit if you’re craving something hearty and flavorful.

Google
Really great food and beer! We split roasted Brussels and perogies as an appetizer, and my fiance had a Polish that looked incredible while I had a kebab wrap. Ate our entrees too fast so no pics 🤗 So many things on the menu we wanted to try so we will be back. Their mustard and slaw are especially good. We enjoyed our meal with a Polish lager beer and a pickle gin martini. Cute outdoor patio too.

Yelp
Walked into this restaurant trying to find a place to eat. Found out they just opened. This place was a 10/10. The food was sooo good and had great prices. I got the maczanka original and the pierogis (not pictured). Service was great. I'll be bringing friends next time and telling everyone to try this place!

Yelp
I loved Ella's bbq so really disappointed it closed. So spoko had big shoes to fill. I had spoko and it was good. I had a baguette and a sandwich and enjoyed both. Excited to try more flavors and items. Worth a try!
