"Detroit-style pies have become a point of obsession in the Bay Area for folks who like their pizzas extra-thick and extra crunchy. Square Pie Guys’s crispy-edged, rectangular pizzas topped with classic pepperoni or elaborate combinations have always been prepared with takeout or delivery in mind, making them perfect for any time." - Dianne de Guzman
"The team at Square Pie Guys knows how to provide a gluten-free undercarriage that even evil pizza villain Dave Portnoy would give a gold star. Head here for a wide array of options, rotating partnerships, and a not-too-crazy price point. The restaurant makes it easy: when ordering online, punch the gluten-free button for $3 and, for the dairy-free, $2.10 for that button, too." - Paolo Bicchieri
"Marc Schechter, a Bay Area pizza aficionado and owner of Square Pie Guys, is launching a pop-up project to spread the gospel of tavern-style (aka bar) pies under the Bar Pie Guys name. The project focuses on thinner, crisp-crusted tavern-style pizzas rather than the Detroit-style pies sold at his SPG shops; these pizzas are being offered via pop-ups (not at SPG locations), including a fundraiser for wildfire relief on January 13. Followers are advised to watch @barpieguys for upcoming pop-up details." - Dianne de Guzman
"Square Pie Guys’ Ghirardelli Square outpost is the perfect place to enjoy textbook-sized Detroit-style pizzas while staring out at views of Alcatraz. There are massive windows overlooking the water, a patio in front, and, of course, square slices spilling over with gooey mozzarella. Lined with crispy cheddar cheese edges, the crust is somehow light and fluffy despite looking like a brick. The menu is the same as their SoMa and Oakland locations, and full of hits across the board. The classic 6x8 topped with exactly 48 pepperoni cups should be on the table, as should their fully loaded vodka pie with pulled pork, pineapple, and jalapeño. Plenty of beer and wine are also on hand for when you kick back and take in the waterfront setting. " - lani conway, julia chen 1
"This Detroit-style pizza mini-chain Square Pie Guys offers indoor and patio dining plus takeout at this outpost fronting Ghirardelli Square and Aquatic Park. The pies are unique in the West Coast pizza world — cut into thick, pillowy squares; bounded by crisped cheese-laden edges; and starring a blend of traditional and unusual toppings. Pepperoni, for example, is available either with red sauce and mozzarella, or with white sauce, chile flake, green goddess dressing, and grated grana padano. Kale salads, chicken wings, and desserts complete the menu." - Eater Staff, Laura Smith Borrman
