The Best Pizza in San Diego, California | Eater San Diego

"Find Detroit-style, Sicilian, and thin-crust square slices (aka Boston Beach pizza) at this beachy neighborhood spot. All of the shop’s signature Detroit-style pizzas pay homage to the city and are named after cars like the Chevy with salami, cupping pepperoni, meatball and bacon. Outdoor picnic tables and window-front stools make it easier to eat here, but takeout is the way to go for feeding larger parties." - darlene-horn

An absolute must for San Diego pizza! There's many pizza and toppings combos with amazing quality. Staff has always been pleasant. There is no indoor seating but I've always been able to get a seat at the tables just outside the door. They do offer online ordering also if you'd like a quick pizza pickup!

Google
Some of the best pizza I’ve had in ages! Was especially better for late night. The crust and thickness was perfect and the flavoring was on point. The sauce was perfectly flavored and the cheese/topping ratio to crust was very satisfactory. Sitting outside was super nice!

Haney Hamod

Google
Absolutely delicious pizza! The crust was perfectly crispy, the sauce had great flavor, and the toppings were fresh. Fast service and friendly staff—what more can you ask for?

Shawn

Google
The pizza was quite good here, the sauce was generous and the pizza itself had a little more grease than I like but overall it was very tasty. It’s a Detroit style pizza with fluffy and crisp edges and we opted for extra ricotta which was a great add on. I wish it was just a slight more crisp on the bottom but that’s on personal preference. Would recommend coming to try it out if you’re in the area.

John Wright

Google
Best Detroit style pizzeria in town. The crust has this amazing, toasted cheese crunch and the bread is so fluffy. My favorites are ALL of them, but seriously you can’t go wrong with any of the Detroit style pizzas. T-Bird, Firebird, Pontiac (2.0), and the Jeep are generally available for by the slice selection. The frozen take and bake pizzas are amazing value and reheat really well too! Only complaint is they are hard to reheat next day, but they still taste amazing regardless.

Google
I was so excited to try a highly-rated thin crust beach pie. Unfortunately it was undercooked and cold in the middle . I put a square in my air fryer for a few minutes to crisp it up and it was great after that. I'll try them again, but in person so I can make sure it comes out hot and crispy.

Google
Pizza is phenomenal. We were familiar with Detroit pizza but not the other styles, all of which were fantastic. The thick crust styles were incredibly light and fluffy, yet crunchy and perfectly cooked. The gentleman who helped us was so helpful and informative on explaining the different styles and how we could order them. Too bad we don't live close or we would be here all the time.

Google
Amazing pizza, amazing people and place. The owner is super nice. He nade us fresh vegan pizza to try the slice. They also have gluten-free option. All very delicious and nice atmosphere.

Yelp
I just want this review to say, "Every time I come to Greater San Diego, I will stop here. The end." But as someone that may or may not influence your next meal, I will leave that up to you. This wannabe know-it-all, when it comes to the stylings and ingredients used in Pizzas around the world, every so often learns amazing new things ... last year I discovered Detroit style pizza in Portland, OR. Afterward I made it my life mission to find it everywhere I go... THE ORDER: Apologies: I just found this in my drafts... I said I would finish it when I got home, but I never did. Reflecting back. The service was amazing and I noticed something there that defined the owner as Brazilian (like my mom) and we hit it off great. I am currently not in the area but, trust me... I am going back whenever I get the chance. " Hey! February 2025? Do you hear me?"...Probably March and April too, if you want me to be honest.

Yelp
Square Pizza in Pacific Beach is a great spot for pizza lovers. The friendly cashiers were super helpful, making the ordering process a breeze. I regularly order their Detroit-style pizza, specifically the GM with halved meatballs, ricotta, and garlic, but I've also enjoyed their slices, including the DODGE, a rich vegetarian pie with baby spinach, mushrooms, ricotta, and garlic, and the PONTIAC, perfect for pepperoni cup lovers. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, with outdoor seating available for those who want to enjoy their meal on-site. If you're a fan of Detroit-style pizza, Square Pizza is definitely worth a visit. It's a fantastic place to satisfy your pizza cravings!

Yelp
I love pizza and trying new pizza spots is a hobby I love to do. Square pizza is a small shop with benches out front to sit at if you are eating there. It didn't take too long to get our pizza after order which is a good and bad thing. Good since I can eat sooner, but I wish the pizza was a little hotter when it came out. I would've happily waited another few minutes to really get it piping hot. We had the Ford, Mercury, and Dodge. All three were great. The crust was crunchy and the cheese was crispy at the edges! I'm a big fan of the corner slices!

Yelp
2 squares of pizza for $8. Filling. The best thing about this place is the pizza's texture. The bottom of the pizza has a nice thin/light crisp. The rest of the thickness of the pizza is wonderfully soft, fluffy, and light. The pizza is well seasoned. It is definitely worth checking out! Cashier was friendly and nice, offers to bring the pizza out to your table when it is done reheating. Sweet rock and roll music playing gives it a good vibe eating good pizza with Bon Jovi's "ohhhhh we're half way there!"

Yelp
Great pizza, great staff, great prices, great location. Just great. 10/10. The cheese balls were pretty good too.

Yelp
If you're a fan of Detroit style pizza this is the spot to go to! My boyfriend and I got a whole pie for ourselves and it was delicious. It was my first time trying Detroit style pizza and I can definitely say I like more than Chicago style! The way the crust feels like it's been fried, but still soft and fluffy on the inside is so yummy. Parking is limited so be ready for a walk in case you park down the street. The good thing is that service is quick so you'll get your pizza fast!
google avatar

Yelp
Sorry to say, the consensus on the pizza was meh. Five stars for the hipster staff. We ordered sausage with extra garlic. First slice was yummy cause we're really hungry, second, not so much. Don't pay much attention to this review if you're young and had a lot of beer. We're old and picky. Regardless, support local!

Yelp
The customer service was great. But the pizza was amazing. My favorite place for pizza. The taste and texture was amazing. Next trip I make here I'm getting a whole box instead of a few slices. I also had a cannoli. Best I've had so far. I'll be coming back soon!

Yelp
After hearing about Square Pizza, this place was on my top radar of pizza places to try. I was extremely excited to try this place just from the pictures. The slices we got were around $7 each (they slice it in 2 when they bring it out) which is on the pricier side, however these Detroit slices are quite filling. There's no inside seating but there are a few tables outside where we were able to eat. Service was friendly and quick, they brought out our slices in about 5-10 minutes. Between the slices we got (All Detroit-style), the classic Ford was my favorite! Classic sauce on top with just some cheese and basil, this was done really well. The Mercury comes with Peppers, Onions, Mushrooms, Pepperoni, and Olives. I felt that the ingredients were just okay and the pepperoni had a slight outside burnt crisp to them which I wasn't a fan of. The Dodge has Spinach, Ricotta, Mushrooms and Garlic. I liked this one more than the Mercury since the toppings were a bit more unique and they stood out by themselves. The crust on these Detroit slices are amazing! Crunchy on the outside with that strong bite of the cheese baked into the crust. My one big complaint (not sure if I'm an outlier) is that although the slices were warmed up, I felt like they weren't really hot when we took our first bites. They were warm, but not piping hot (which I think should be the way). And because of this, not only is the first bite not as explosive, but the other slices got room temperature way too fast. I would much rather have the pizza be scorching hot when it comes out since that's when it's going to taste the best.

Yelp
This is a solid pizza place in PB! It is a short walk from the water. We got two whole pizzas for 4 of us and there were a few slices left over. We got the Pontiac and el Camino. The el Camino was my favorite with the ricotta and peppers! Unfortunately there is no inside seating but they do have benches outside. The servers were very helpful in their recs for what to get with such a big menu.

Madi s.

Yelp
The pizza is amazing here and the cashier was super knowledgeable about celiac and told me about all the precautions they take to prevent cross contamination. Unfortunately I still got sick and am dealing with rashes from the pizza, I wouldn't risk going here again but if you're not sensitive to gluten you should definitely give it a try!

Yelp
This is the kind of pizza you want to bring home to mama. Oh and the cookies are dumb fire, so what are you waiting for? I know your fridge is overloaded with turkey day leftovies, but once the dust has settled, you'll wanna scoot your boots down to Cass street for this MUST HAVE pizza pie. Located on a hot little foodie block with the likes of Dave's HC, Harry's TC, Cass St. B&G, and Big Jim's RB, lies this absolute GEM of a pizza palace. It was important to mention those other spots as that's what initially brought me to the area. After shoveling down nearly an entire burrito, we began strolling past Square, when I decided to pop in and "just have a look". Well, what started as just having a look, turned into two slices and two cookies. I believe the total came in at around $18, which seemed pretty reasonable for what they deemed "the best cookies", and a couple delicious looking, thicker than a snicker, slices of pie. Needless to say, if I couldn't finish the burrito, I had no business trying to eat pizza that night, so in the fridge it went. After scarfing down on those spectacular and rotund cookies (also a MUST HAVE), the pizza sat lonely in the fridge from Friday until Monday evening. Thinking I had probably wasted my money by leaving the pizza in the box for 3 days in the fridge, I figured I'd take my chances and throw that pepperoni in the oven at 450 degrees for 5-7 minutes. What came out was some of the best pie I've had in San Diego. Believe it or not, we did the same thing with a slice of the white pie the next night, Day 4, and it too was supremely delicious! I don't advise leaving your pie in the fridge for several days, but if you do, just know you'll still have some excellent eats coming your way. Absolutely bomb pizza, oh the crust, and some incredible cookies, makes this place a must see. Thanks to the friendly and helpful cashier who recommended the cookies. I'll most definitely be back!!!

Yelp
LITERALLY THE BEST DETROIT STYLE PIZZA IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!! The problem I've had with Detroit style pizzas in the past is that they are dry and the dough is not flavorful. The pizza here is AMAZING. The dough is seasoned so well, the cheese crust is perfect, and just the right amount of cheese and sauce. I've been thinking about this pizza ever since.

Beatriz H.

Yelp
Sliced pizza was cold. They just have it sitting behind the glass. Wish they would at least pop it in the oven for a bit to heat it up. Taste was average pizza. Better than your typically fast food pizza place. Good for the price.
google avatar

Yelp
Detroit style done right! Everyone loved the pies we ordered, which were of excellent quality and outstanding flavor; that crispy, cheesy crust is life-changing. But don't miss the white pie on focaccia - just simple olive oil, garlic and cheese to include fluffy clouds of heavenly fresh ricotta. Still dreaming of that. Service was highly competent and couldn't have been any more friendly; these are just great people.
google avatar

Courtney L.

Yelp
The best Detroit style pizza I have found outside of Mama's Too in New York. One slice was very filling. I got the Dodge slice. The red sauce was flavorful and there was plenty of it. Service was great and the store was clean. It's a small shop with a few tables outside. I assume they mostly do to go orders. I will be back for sure!

Yelp
Finally had the opportunity to try Square Pizza, few things stood out. The service was great! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted then asked if it was our first time, it was. The young man (who was awesome, btw) explained everything in great detail about the different types of pizzas available and was friendly. We ended up getting three single slices . Pizza's were solid, just wish there were more toppings/sauce on each of them. Overall solid and would come back.

Yelp
I've had this so many times since the summer and haven't left a review. This place is GREAT!! I've only ever gotten the Pontiac whole pizza and always finish the whole thing. It's about $26 and the price isn't bad compared to other deep dish places. They have other flavors but this one makes me keep going back. They're all made to order (unless you do individual slices) and takes about 20-ish mins. Comes out fresh. You can eat outside in their seating area. This place does get busy so you can call in. Recommend getting it well or extra well done for crispness. It doesn't burn it at all. I know the pic looks like it but it was just dark that day.

Yelp
My coworker brought pizza here for a potluck & I was hooked I had to visit them in person. Located in PB. There is street parking or a small paid lot you can park in (but it is pricey). Customer service was friendly & they have outdoor seating available. They specialize in Thin Crust, Sicilian & Detroit style pizzas. They also serve Brazilian Cheese Balls, which I am obsessed with! You can order a whole pizza or order by the slice. I loved their Detroit style slices & how fluffy & flavorful the crust was. I will say, they are pricey though.

Jennifer D.

Yelp
It's so good!! I got the Dodge, had just the right amount of everything! Way better than Prince St Pizza.
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
Told my husband I was craving pizza. He brought me here and it did not disappoint. It's a little place in PB with great vibes and the crust takes like full on delicious cheesy bread! I love saucy pizza and this pizza has sauce. He was able to get four slices (he originally thought one was two slices because they're pretty big) and said the server was so chill and nice and had good vibes. It was delicious! We got the jeep, upside down Sicilian, Pontiac and I forgot. But great! I am definitely returning.
google avatar

Karlo S.

Yelp
Detroit-style pizza done right! It's just that simple. The crunchy crust, the cheesy dough, the tasty sauces and of course all the amazing toppings. This PB spot needs to expand because we most definitely need more Detroit-style pizza spots in the area. And that is coming from a thin crust/New York-style pizza type of guy. The main reason why I love the thin crust is for the extra layer of crunch you get. But with Detroit-style, even with the thicker cuts, you still get the crunch because they make the crust so crunchy and cheesy. And Square Pizza gets it right every time. My go to is the Buick because I love bacon, pineapple and bbq sauce. But the classic Pontiac with the cups of pepperoni and the Firebird with the hot sauce drizzle are also winners. By the way, they also do have thin crust pizzas here, so if Detroit-style ain't your type, they still have you covered. Every day they have ready-made pizza by the slice and of course freshly made pizzas to order. Awesome spot and friendly staff always when I'm there!

Melinda H.

Yelp
This place was sooooo good! We went here because my friend has a severe gluten allergy and she saw they had GF pizza. When she ordered her pizza she heard someone in the kitchen say something like "clear the work space, gluten allergy", which made her so thankful. But the most important part is the pizza, and it was SO GOOD!! Sometimes pan style pizza can be a little too greasy/salty for me, but this one was not! It was a perfect balance of bread, sauce, cheese and toppings. I had ordered a slice of regular (non-GF) pizza and then ate a slice of my friends GF pizza and they tasted almost the same. So impressive.
google avatar

Rae A.

Yelp
Came here after yoga on a Thursday - parking was relatively easy. Street parking was good for 2 hours. At around 6:30/7 ish all the tables were taken but there wasn't like a - line out the door. We ordered and had to wait for someone to leave (not super long) We ordered three slices for a total of around 21$. The slices were big and they actually end up cutting it and toasting it. I do think it was kinda expensive and it seemed like even the vegetarian ones that didn't have a lot of protein on was still the same cost. Service was really good and my favorite one would be the basil/garlic and then the dodge. I love pepperoni but felt that this didn't offer as much as Prince Street Pizza! I do like the crispiness of the edges and the crunch of the crust!! It was really a fun time hanging with my friends over a nice slice of pizza. It's also super close to Garnet so a little busy.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely loved "Square pizza"!!!! Worth the drive up from Otay Ranch, my family loved it, and they were totally cool with us!!! Five star food, five star staff, and we'll be back!!!! Mr. Padilla SD Public school educator
google avatar

Yelp
Had some great slices of pizza at this pizza spot in the heart of Pacific Beach. The slices are around $6 a slice which sounds like a lot, but the slices are pretty big and thick, with delicious flavor! We got it to go and there is nowhere to wait inside except along the side of the wall, and it can get very crowded in there.
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Was craving some Detroit style pizza and Yelp helped a brother out and directed me to this place. They have other pizza options but the Detroit style is why you should come here. They name their pies after Motor City cars (Pontiac, Buick, Firebird, etc) - you can buy by the slice or a full pie. I tried the Pontiac (pepperoni) and one with sausage and both were good. The charred cheese crust is the highlight and is so good. This place is small so most people take it to go, however they have some outside tables you can eat if you want it fresh. Note - no beer or wine, but bonus is they have cannolis.
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
All the different topping options... the cheese, the crust, the mouthfeel... hands down one of my favorite pizza joints in San Diego. I recommend you eat it fresh there because it is deliciousssss. There's only outdoor seating though if you wanted to eat it quick, so fyi. Service is pretty quick given they make whole pies and heat the single slices. Detroit style "Dodge" pizza is my ultimate fave if you love ricotta.
google avatar

Lance T.

Yelp
Some of the best pizza I've had. Love that they have premade selections to choose from. Took a piece of the Dodge and GM home to heat in the oven. Absolutely fantastic pizza! The cashier was very friendly and knowledgeable. Will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Victoria B.

Yelp
Shared slices (Methuen, Amesbury & Danver) & the 1/2 Sicilian margarita (would love garlic chunks. Liked whole leaf basil). Amesbury needed more sharp feta, but other slices were really good. Loved street side benches.
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
Stopped by to grab a slice and cannoli to go. Pizza was pretty good definitely while be trying again, the cannoli was a bit lackluster- it looked amazing but just didn't have much flavor the only flavor was the chocolate chips themselves
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
I've only tried one slice, but I wouldn't recommend it. It was the barbecue chicken. It seemed to have bacon pieces in it or something, which gave it an off taste. There wasn't very much cheese, and the crust was tooto white bread. He stopped were very friendly and efficient. There are tons of choices of pizzas, drinks, and condiments. Outdoor seating only.

Yelp
We had the Cadillac Hampton Brazilian Cheese Bread First tip, dine in. Eating the pizza fresh from the oven with the cheese so melty and the edges so crispy make for a very delicious meal. We've had pizza to go from here as well, but because their box doesn't have any special ridges to keep the bottom of the pizza lifted from the box, it steams inside making it a soggy pizza by the time you get home. That being said, it's one of the most delicious pizzas we've ever had. If you pop the leftover in the toaster it's still good. For dine in, they serve the Chicago style pizza on a sheet tray with a wire rack to keep it crispy. The toppings are so generous especially the creamy ricotta that one slice is very filling. The thin crust was also great. The Brazilian cheese bread is also incredible and they heat it up for you so it comes out warm and chewy.
google avatar

Laurel G.

Yelp
The freshest tasting pizza I have ever had. Our go-to order is the Cadillac. It's a Detroit-style so it's deep and thick. It has cupping pepperoni with just the right amount of spiciness to be interesting but not hot. Dollops of ricotta give it a delightful creaminess. The sauce on all their pizzas tastes SO FRESH. Service has always been friendly. We love eating at the tables outside, there has been one open for us both times we've gone.
google avatar

Sharry S.

Yelp
Good pizza, the only criticism I have is that they should tell you approximate sizes. I ordered a tray of pizza. I didn't expect to receive 3 boxes! When I ordered the tray they didn't show me or tell me that it would be so huge!
google avatar

Sarah N.

Yelp
Ok I think this place was the best pizza I've had in SD. I've had a good amount of pizzas around the country but this is one of the top favorites and it's great that I live close enough to enjoy it again. We got the one Detroit style pizza with 2 flavors. You can get 2 flavors as long as they have the same sauce. We got the Pontiac 2.0 and the Cadillac. My favorite was the Cadillac for sure. I love saucy pizzas. They have so many different types of pizza here so you should go over the menu and be prepared unlike me. I was extremely frazzled because the workers kept staring at me while I was trying to figure out what I wanted. I panicked and just went outside to figure it out. Once you place your order it will come out in about 20-30 mins. The crust is amazing and the sauce and toppings are A1. This place is definitely better than prince street pizza. Only thing is parking is tight bc ofc it's PB!
google avatar

Kay A.

Yelp
THE place for gluten free & vegan pizza. and without having to make any substitutions (a dream!) What makes it so special is that it has all of the elements that make regular pizza so delicious, but with bonus unique elements because it's made from a different flour. Its like it embraces its lack of gluten and shines because of that, instead of making you feel like its missing something and you have to use your imagination for it to satisfy a pizza craving. The crust was thick, chewy, crispy, fluffy, light, but still hearty and satisfying. The world would be brighter if every gf bread had the texture this crust has. The sauce was the perfect balance of sweet and acidic with a delicious richness. The cheese was great. Great portion too! it even had a great texture cold the next day. You can also tell they take pride in their ingredients, with the natural non gmo italian flour they use on display as you walk in. Definitely a new go to! :)

Yelp
Just finished my last bite of pizza and omg... the best ever i think ive ever had and even had new york pizza before!! Lolol searched up "cheap eats" in SD and found this place god bless square pizza we love you Got 3 slices of pizza that are basically 2 slices in 1 order all for $21!!!! Best steal and the ambiance is hereeeee 11/10 recommend !! Also extremely friendly staff that made the ambiance even better! Wish i took some pics but couldnt because everyone started eating lol we couldnt wait!!
google avatar

Arnold D.

Yelp
Pizza is seen this place on IG and on YouTube. I'm sure I'm like everyone else when your traveling to SD you start making a list of what to eat out there and well this one made the list, the guys there were really Koo, they seen me come in and right away greeted me and asked what they can get for me and how did I find there place. There all named after something from Detroit which is real Koo. It's in a nice area, small tables out side not big enough for a big group.

Yelp
Tonight we had door dash deliver a Square Pizza that was a follow up to a perfect pizza experience 2 years ago when we were in PB last. And, once again, it was a mind blowing experience. Okay, so maybe that is a little over-the-top assessment, but you read the significance of my experience. Tonight we ordered an 8 square custom pie: pepperoni, sausage, black olive, and jalapeño. The pizza was delivered quickly by door dash. Thank you. It was hot and crispy. The edges of this rectangle pizza are made up of burnt cheese and pepperoni. Square purposely places cheese and pepperoni around the edges to create this signature crispy edge. Although thick crust, the crust is light as a feather. It's absolutely delicious and amazing. Lastly, it's a very fair price for an amazing pizza. Please open a square pizza in San Jose...I'll see you every week.

Yelp
Gr8 place to grab a pizza to go. They can bake for you, you can bake @ home when baking pizza. Peoples are super cool and accommodating, there is outdoor seating. Skateboard by some time soon.
google avatar

Kenny C.

Yelp
This place is a quick, casual spot with some limited seating outside. I tried a few slices of pizza as well as a pistachio/chocolate chip cannoli. The pizza slices were huge and the crust was delicious. I think the place could load up the toppings more which would make the pizzas perfect! Overall, service was helpful and the food was solid so I'd probably be back again if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been waiting for four months to come here and so glad we did. My sister and I were in the area and I treated her too lunch as she has not had Detroit style pizza. The space is small thou inviting. It's housed in a brick building near the ocean. As we walked in when they were opening, only a few pizza flavors were on display, however, the scent was mesmerizing. It was enough to make your mouth water with the melted cheese on a thick and fluffy crust. We ordered cheese basil pizza and mushroom pizza. We sat outside and enjoyed the pizza and sunshine. Portions are large and the flavors are incredible and leaves a lasting impression. Crunchy and soft crust, high quality ingredients, and packed with immense deliciousness. We ended up taking left overs to go which is a big treat. We also ordered extra for our family to enjoy. A great place for one person dining alone or a large group. No tables inside, all the bench tables are outside on a busy street. Overall, love the food and service and excited to return. Bon appetito! We met the owner and one of his staff members, very sweet.

Yelp
I've been on a pizza kick recently and have been wanting to try this place for so long since it opened! Square pizza just hits differently! I ordered the Meat Lovers pizza and honestly, it is a little too salty overall, but it is what it is when it comes to meat lovers. It's expected almost, but I wanted to try it anyway. Love the Detroit style pizzas here and their thick crust!! I am excited to try other pizzas here!

Yelp
Discovered this place while looking around for food lol. As you enter it feels modern and welcoming. They have a pizza display of already cooked pizza you can purchase by the slice but we decided to order an entire pizza. Let's start with the pizza review. I don't remember the name but it was the pizza with chicken, bacon, ranch and bbq sauce. First impression it looks like Detroit style pizza. Thick but not too thick. Fluffy doe and crispy crust. The doe almost taste a little deep fried and the crust has a cheesy taste to it. It did feel too salty for me but overall it was delicious! Just make sure to hydrate with some water after haha. With all that being said, the service was great. The two people working there were very friendly and nice to talk to. The pizza is different compared to a lot of pizza places in San Diego and tastes amazing! I want to give them a 4.5/5! You have to try their pizza if you enjoy a good slice of pizza or a whole pizza!

Yelp
Decent meal, however very overpriced for the quality. Crust was also burnt to the point of no return.

Yelp
The best square slice I've ever had in my life!! Why? It's light and fluffy! You don't feel heavy after a slice at all. I've been everywhere in NYC and can say these folks make the best square. Price is reasonable, outdoor seating only.
