Neat upstairs place with cheese & charcuterei and a few other cute plates...expensive, but liw key and very approachable atmosphere...a little cold for the deck tonight, but I'd love to sit outside here--it looks inviting for happy hour when things warm up.

Entrees are absolute creative genius! Fabulous charcuterie selections, excellent cocktails. Plus it serves late. Considering you can drink in Nola 24/7, why is it so hard to get a decent meal after 10:30? This place serves till like 2 AM, so great choice for late meal.

Conveniently located on Magazine Street, the shopping district. They no longer have those cigar box scallops pictured on Google+. But they have lots of equally visuals dazzling dishes. Charcuterie half and half board is a must. Unique to Root, it had lots of great pickled veggies and peaches (perhaps a Southern thing?). Snack board had one of everything on the happy hour menu so you don't have to choose.

Culinary attack on your sense. Cocktails that are creative, unique and tasty. Amazing views from the second floor balcony for a more casual experience. Food appeals to not only the pallet, but to your eyes as dish presentation is on fleek! While the wine list is small, only a couple of options in red, white, sparkling- the selections are interesting and very well thought out.

The restaraunt is nice and well decorated. Staff was nice and friendly. We had a waiter for our food and a second waiter for our drinks. The food/drinks here are all about presentation but they lack in taste. We had two cocktails but neither one was any good. The food was nicely presented. I was not impressed with the taste of anything we had. For the amount of money we paid I was expecting really good food. My main course was dry and overcooked. My wife's main course was disappointing. I do not recommend this restaraunt. There are plenty of great restaraunts around the area. Eat at one of those instead.

This is a top-notch restaurant with a low profile. The cuisine is eclectic, elegant, and quite amazing. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, and very down-to-earth. There were wonderful surprises at every course and I just ran out of room in my belly.

The food here was delicious and unconventional in presentation; the scallops were probably the best I've had, and were served in a cigar box. The bartender also knew how to make an exceedingly good whiskey sour. The ambiance was very nice, intimate and inviting while still being trendy and avant-garde. However, the service was also unconventional, and not necessarily in a good way. We had a succession of wait staff who were all very nice, but they took a very long time to provide even basic service such as water refills. The restaurant wasn't busy at all, but it took 30 minutes to get my whiskey drink, and a little over an hour to get our entrees. If they can streamline the service, Root will deserve a 5-star review.

My wife made a reservation at Square Root for a 7-course tasting menu with a cocktail pairing for my 35th birthday. While the food did not disappoint, sadly, they slammed the entire tasting into an hour and 45 minutes (if not less). We often didn't even have time to finish our cocktails before the next course was served--which completely defeats the purpose of doing a drink pairing--and that was when the cocktails arrived on time. I understand that there has to be some limit on the length of the tasting, but we were the last group of reservations for the night and the chef simply seemed anxious to finish the tasting and start cleaning up. One of the joys of doing a meal with 7-10 courses is having a long, drawn out meal in which you savor every bite, especially when it's part of celebrating a special occasion. But the fact that the meal felt rushed from start to finish ruined the entire experience.

Food ,was great !! N Service was perfect!! Can wait to go back!! We were there for my friends Birthday n everyone enjoyed the food n service!!!

Fantastic food, great service, love the look and feel of the place, can't say enough good things about it here. Started off with the oyster blt and that's absolutely how you want to start your meal. Went with a few friends so for entrees we got the creole redfish, the ribeye and the cast iron seared fish. Not a single complaint in here but I'd go for the creole fish. It comes out whole and it's light and flaky. Will absolutely be back.

My husband and I went to Gris Gris for a late dinner after the Pelicans game on Friday. We arrived and were seated immediately. The ambiance was nice and it was still felt lively even though there were not many people upstairs because it was close to closing time. We both ordered a drink, an old fashion and a Voodoo Queen. Both drinks were delicious and brought out quickly. We ordered the gumbo and a small Caesar salad to start. The gumbo was tasty. The salad was good but it was served in a small bowl which made it hard to eat without knocking salad on the table. For our mains we both ordered the brown butter seated scallops. Best decision ever! The scallops were perfectly cooked and since I do not eat pork I was offered green beans and tomatoes as the side in lieu of the white beans and greens (which husband said was so flavorful and delectable). Everything was well-seasoned and came out quickly. No dessert this visit but we definitely be back to try the bread pudding! Our server was friendly, attentive and gave recommendations as well and that is always appreciated.

I liked this place very much! The food is phenomenal! The service is pretty good. But omg make sure you have a reservation. That's so important here. Because even if you don't think they'll be busy, think again. If it starts to rain, like 80% of their seating is unusable. So make a reservation because they are worth it!!! I also like how the downstairs seating is set up. It's like bar seating but in front of the kitchen almost like a cooking demo. This would be really cool for a date night but not for those who are seeking privacy. I can't wait to go back when it's not a million degrees here in New Orleans, make a reservation for a dry night and enjoy a night at one of their sidewalk tables or their balcony overlooking magazine street.

Gris Gris is a staple in New Orleans. Their food is always consistent and I'm surprised that they are not more popular. The ambiance is warm. The staff is always friendly. The service was very quick on this particular Friday evening. Many of seating options- You can choose to sit around the open kitchen, on their upstairs balcony, outside on the ground level. Appetizers: Gizzards- deep fried and comes with a brown gravy with cheesy grits. It was a bit salty, but I'd give it another try next time. Oyster BLT- *MUST TRY* - deep fried oysters with fried pork belly on top of pepper jelly. Just YUM Entrees: Chicken & Dumplings - perfectly flavored and I loved the texture of the dumplings. I wish there was more dumplings to go with the large amount of chicken; I'll ask for extra next time.

First time here and first time in New Orleans. Came to Gris Gris after seeing a YouTube video. It did not disappoint at all. We sat at the bar where we got a play by play on food preparation. We enjoyed their gumbo, shrimp appetizers, and pull pork sandwich's . Just delicious. Humongous sandwich. Service was perfect. Chef was friendly and just an incredible master. He loves what he does and it shows on your plate. I will be back.

Incredible. Did I say that? Yes, it was. We sat at the chefs table. It was a rainy fay, it was nice to sit inside and see how the kitchen worked. Service was amazing. I wish I had remembered her name. She was so knowledgeable. The chicken gizzard appetizer was so good, and let me say that the appetizer portions are so filling. The pork chops were good. The chicken and biscuits were amazing. The brown sugar scallops were a bit undercooked for me. They could have stayed on the grill for another 4 minutes. An amazing meal. I must say. Now, let's look at the bread pudding, a bit heavy for my taste, but flavorful. I would definitely go again.

Gris Gris, I have heard many things about this establishment all the way from the east coast! I made a reservation, which i'd highly recommend considering that this seems to be a hotspot. The ambiance is very lively, imagine a bar or brewery. The service is good, but could be better. The waiters and waitresses chatter and gossip a lot behind the bar, when they could be spending that time tending to their patrons (just saying LOL) The menu was very limited and overpriced. I ordered a bowl of chicken and andouille sausage gumbo, and also a oyster caesar salad. The gumbo was so savory and warming! The seasoning and flavor profile were bold and authentic! This dish felt warming and comforting! The oyster salad was nice and tasty, and I felt like the oyster protein was a nice touch to the salad! The meal was amazing and done right! I enjoyed my time here, but this place could implement some improvements (as noted above) to improve the establishment. Cheers to good eats!

We came here for the dessert and drinks as we already had eaten lunch before we realized we were so close to here. We arrived around 5pm and since we knew we weren't going for a full meal, we asked to sit at the bar. I got the bread pudding and the bf got a sazerac cocktail, of which we both thoroughly enjoyed. We felt somewhat disappointed that we had already eaten. When you sit at the bar, you get to see the food being made. As we watched them prepare dish after dish, our mouths started to water and we started looking at the menu to see if we could figure out what people were ordering. The bar was spacious and felt like it would have been comfortable even if we had a full meal. We got great service, even though we only had a few items. I really enjoyed the bread pudding even though I was full. Next time we're in the area, we'll be back to try some entrees.

Great location with patio seating, shrimp and gris gris grits was the best I've ever had.

This was our only real unplanned dinner of our trip. Our hotel was in the area and we passed by thought it looked good. So glad we stopped! We got a spot at the bar which is a view of the kitchen so it was dinner and a show. Note that the rest of the tables and bathroom are up a steep staircase. The wait staff are definitely getting a workout. Our waiter was very kind and the shrimp and grits were a surprise food highlight of the trip! I devoured it all!

Oh my- Legit good food. Atmosphere is perfect, service was excellent. The special was Sword Fish, it was perfectly cooked, light flakey and delicious. The burger was full of flavor and the fries were perfect seasoned. My son fell in love with the shrimp appetizer. If you're in the area definitely worth it and not still worth it if you're not.

We made reservations to celebrate Valentine's Day. We'd dined here on our first date and hadn't been back since. If our service then was like it was tonight, we probably wouldn't have returned. The forecast called for a 100% chance of rain so we called to see if we could move our balcony reservation to inside. The host had already moved us to the chef's table. We loved that. However our enthusiasm was dashed by our curt server. After waiting a while, we were greeted with, "Y'all know what you want yet?" and it didn't get better from there. He was inattentive and in a rush. Another unfortunate moment happened when we asked what was in the brownie pie. The server asked one of the sous chefs who rolled his eyes. The pie wasn't on the menu or online, so there was no way to know if there were nuts or what exactly a brownie pie is. The hosts and the person who brought our cocktails were friendly, though. My partner enjoyed his shrimp and grits. I agree with him, that dish was great. My duck was cold and the portion of the entree including the sweet potato was disappointing. I did enjoy the flavor of the puree. It reminded me of a classic Thanksgiving candied sweet potato dish. The duck was well seasoned, too, but not at all hot. Ultimately, it was a bummer that Gris-Gris didn't live up to the sweet memories we'd associated with it.

We just happened across this fantastic restaurant. It was a tad chilly outside so we chose the hour wait to sit inside. Well worth it! The Chefs Table was amazing. Watching the multiple chefs prepare meals and chatting with them and other guests was fun. The food.... omg! There are no words to express its amazingness! I had the best swordfish ever. My hubby had shrimp and grits. To die for. The service was fabulous. Southern friendliness to a Ten! We loved watching those amazing servers with One Hand!!! ...hold the giant platters loaded with plates of amazing food go up the steep steps to serve guests upstairs! What a feat! It was so fun we had an extra local made beer and desert, and stayed awhile longer to enjoy all the local environment. Nice place, casual or dressy. Very welcoming and appreciative of their patrons.

Gumbo and crab cake were fire!!!! Oyster blt was great make sure to have a piece of each together. Shrimp and grits were arguably the best I've had! Service was great. Ask to sit inside if you're there in the winter. Good vibes here.

Dinner was absolutely fantastic! I had the double cut pork chop and I've never had better! Ambiance was nice, funky meets swanky. Service was amazing!

Visited here for the first time this past Monday evening. We found street parking nearby for a very reasonable parking cost. When we arrived we were told that they were crowded and seats were limited. So we were offered seats at either the bar upstairs or the bar-type area near the front door. We chose the second seating option. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. They did have some happy hour food and drink options. We both enjoyed our dishes. I ordered the CAST IRON SEARED FISH & SHRIMP dish which came with green beans. The fish was swordfish. The dish was tasty overall. My friend ordered the duck dish and that was extra tasty. I would return here to try other dishes on the menu.

Always wanted to go here so when my daughter came in town, we decided it was the perfect time. We made reservations for 12pm on a Sunday , and it was not crowded at all. We sat on the balcony over looking the city and it was lovely. I ordered the BBT which was pretty good and hearty. The portion was a great size. The benedict however was a little disappointing. My daughter said the pulled pork was not flavorful but the croissant it was on was delicious. She mentioned she'd like to go back due to the great ambience and friendly service but definitely order a different meal!

Gris-Gris is a fabulous brunch spot by local native Eric Cook located in the Lower Garden District. This restaurant has a great balcony and awesome bar area both upstairs and downstairs. The food is incredible and we savored every dish. We recommend the Flambeaux Shrimp, Chicken and Andouille Gumbo, and Shrimp and Gris-Gris Grits. It's a modern take on traditional creole cuisine favorites that will leave your mouth watering. Everything was so flavorful and delicious. Service was great and we were really happy with our seats at the bar. This restaurant is a perfect example of why NOLA has such a world renowned culinary scene!

First off, what a Funky, Beautiful restaurant! "A Splendid Find!" Everything start to finish left you wanting more! Cocktails included! If you are ever in the Lower Garden District, this place is ~GOLDEN~

Cute little place with amazing food! We were seated right away on the comfortable balcony. Drinks came out right away and the service throughout our lunch was great. We got the chicken gizzards and the pulled pork dish with the fried egg. Both meals were authentic southern, savory and delicious!! Highly recommend this place!

A bit off the tourist track, but I have zero regrets about trekking out to Gris-Gris for lunch, delighting in Cajun and southern delicacies and washing them down with a killer bloody mary. (Hint: It's just Zing-Zang!) The pics alone tell the story of killer gumbo, fried oysters, and fried chicken over a biscuit. Never a bad bite here, and the folks working here couldn't have been nicer. Book it.

Great place to eat if you're near the French Quarter / Garden District. I had the pan seared swordfish and shrimp and it was excellent. Perfectly cooked and sooo delicious. We also shared the Oyster BLT appetizer and, though we are mature adults, we sort of fought over the last piece. Very yummy!

Stopped in for drinks while waiting for brunch at a nearby restaurant and the menu intrigued us enough to try a few things. Everything was delicious and I'll definitely be back for a full experience. I ordered the Satsuma 75, flambeaux shrimp and a cup of gumbo. Satsuma 75 10/10 - perfectly mixed Flambeaux Shrimp 9/10 - sooooo good, fried perfectly, sweet but not overly saucy. I would have appreciated a little more spice Gumbo 8/10 - flavor was amazing, this is a deep roux gumbo (not my preference). Piping hot and Full of chicken and andouille and good spice level. Came with a lot of rice, so I just removed some. Not pictured

We had a great experience on a busy Friday night. We booked the chefs table to enjoy the interactive experience. We ordered the shrimp appetizer, which was delicious. Crispy shrimp cooked perfectly with a sweet and tangy sauce and a nice crunchy slaw. So good! For our entrees, we ordered Chicken and Dumplings and the burger. Both were quite good, and well prepared. The Chicken and Dumplings was served in a thick, rich gravy with grilled carrots. The carrots were the only thing I needed a knife and fork to eat (which was a bit awkward with the gravy). We also enjoyed the bread pudding for dessert. The ice cream served along side the bread pudding was delicious!

Totally stumbled on this place thanks to a wait time at the tattoo shop across the street. One of the locals suggested we stop in and try a sazerac with cognac instead of the rye for historical purposes of course. Well I'm never one to turn down a good time, so off we went. Great decision! We were greeted warmly by two hostesses and led to the upstairs bar. The interior is beautiful. They have captured the ambiance we crave. Just so happened we arrived during happy hour, so we obliged some snacks. The cracklin' and pimento cheese dip was the perfect accompaniment to the cognac sazerac. The bar staff was top tier. We were having such a great time that we found ourselves disappointed when the tattoo shop texted they were ready much earlier than expected. Wish we could have explored more of the menu, but there's always next time.

The trip to Gris-Gris was the food highlight of our trip to New Orleans. The menu was very interesting and honestly it was hard to make a decision. In the end our waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. He went line by line explaining and recommending items based on our hunger level. So the service was excellent and drinks and food just the same as the service. The bread pudding dessert is not to be missed! Highly recommended!

Stayed at an Airbnb across the street. I'm only giving three stars because we only came here for a cocktail. We felt that it was very pricey for just 2 cocktails, and they were not that great.

First our server Lana was great. She made several good recommendations, one was the chicken gizzards, which I just couldn't bring myself to try. We tried the FLAMBEAUX SHRIMP and they were tasty. I had the Shrimp and Gris Gris Grits and my friend had the CHEF'S SEASONAL HOUSE SALAD, both were wonderful. Sitting at the bar, we did look longingly at the Brisket Burger, it looked amazing. We'll have to go back!

Decently good food. I will say that this was probably the slowest service I have had in a while, but I did enjoy my meal. Everything was pretty salty in my opinion, and 40 ish minutes between courses was quite rough. We had a 730pm dinner and ended up being the last people in the restaurant at 10pm. The place is cute, and you can sit on the rooftop balcony, inside, or at the chefs counter. The scallops were well cooked (but pretty salty). I enjoyed my soup appetizer, and the bread pudding was quite good. The shrimp and grits was the super salty one, but it was still not bad. I enjoyed my meal minus the speed, but there are lots of great restaurants with this style of food in the area. TBD on returning.

Food Service and Ambiance are excellent great location on Magazine Street. Highly recommended for nice occasions too.

Bookmarked this restaurant 3 years ago. We made dinner reservations for tonight and we were seated as soon as we arrived. No wait. Dinner was fantastic. I enjoyed a Caesar salad with the best authentically creole seasoned shrimp I have ever eaten. So rich in favor! Heavenly. Service was slow but often visited by our server. To be highly anticipated for a busy Saturday night. We sat on the patio. Great evening! Will return!

Can't say enough good things about our dinner and service was great too! I had the double pork chops with a blueberry sauce and potatoes and it was amazing, my companion had the burger and it was phenomenal. Then we shared the bread pudding Ala mode and it was to die for. All together about $100 bucks a piece but well worth the spend in my opinion!

Gris-Gris opened up back in 2018 in the New Orleans Lower Garden District neighborhood on the busy economic artery of Magazine Street and quickly became very popular. I have eaten here several times and have been able to enjoy their really nice private dining area for a nice lunch with large group of friends and that is certainly a great experience (which I would highly recommend if you are looking for such an experience). I had high hopes for the burger here as it certainly looks nice and many people have given it high praise but to my taste buds it fell far short of what I want in a burger as I just didn't find that juicy delicious flavor I crave so it fell far short of my expectations unfortunately. The menu here does have some really great items but on average many things seem to be around average or even below average on the very competitive New Orleans restaurant scale of delicious food. You can have a great meal here if you pick the right things and for a hint those things tend to be oysters and other seafood. This is a lovely little spot that I would recommend for trying New Orleans flavors but not as heavy as many of the traditional recipes. The menu has a variety of small and large plates. Unfortunately they were out of the whole fish so we couldn't try that. The Caesar was great but a little bit salty for me, it was very well dressed and had a lot of cheese. I would ask for a lemon on the side to cut that a bit next time. The scallops were lovely and perfectly prepared. Drinks were ok, a little on the sweet side, but I find that to be the case with NOLA drinks! We sat a the bar and had fine service. Would come back, and I've heard the brunch is great too.

Amazing happy hour and delicious drinks! Stopped in for a few cocktails before a flight and it did not disappoint. Even the cocktails were amazing!! Definitely recommend coming here for HH and will come back to try the food next time

This place knows how to fry an Oyster. Not a large place so reservations are recommended. They do have a cute balcony dining area. We started with the Oyster appetizer with pork belly...to die for. Thr oysters were so well seasoned and fried that I opted for the Oyster salad. When it came to the table I was like..is this some kinda Top Chef deconstructed salad sh$$%. Lol. But it was fantastic!! The Gumbo had good flavor but way too much rice. The fried shrimp appetizer was a bit too sweet for me but they were super crispy and fried well. Looking forward to trying other things on the menu next time.

Walked by this place and saw that it had a great and lovely ambiance- especially at night! So I had to try this while visiting New Orleans. It was a highlight for my trip for sure, and I highly recommend sitting on the balcony. :) The grits out of all the dishes was my favorite!

Very nice spot with the great view of Magazine street. Service was great. The oyster and pork belly appetizer were FABULOUS!! Tasty and with the amount of tomato jam and micro greens. Had a BBT and it was sooooo good I forgot to take a photo. Will be back. .

Perfect happy hour spot and the balcony overlooking Magazine st is wonderful. Definitely try out the happy hour menu but their regular menus is good too. Flavors are on point here. And we got a frozen Irish coffee daiquiri that was

Gris-Gris is an African or Caribbean charm or amulet. Never knew it was a real thing, and assumed it was just a made up name or someone's name. Very cool to name it after a charm/amulet. I came here with a group of 5 other people, and we made reservations beforehand. There is indoor seating, but we sat outside. I ended up getting the Braised Lamb Shank on top of grits and it was a great meal. It actually was a lot of food, and i didn't end up eating the whole thing. The lamb meat was super tender and the jus roti added a nice touch. The other people in our group got the pork chops and the burger and they all enjoyed it as well. Bathrooms are located on the top floor, and its single use, no stalls inside. I wouldn't go so far and say this is fine dining, but it was a nice dinner to enjoy with friends.

Got seated at the end of the balcony on the Magazine St side and enjoyed the beautiful sunset. Enjoyed everything but especially the Gumbo, dramatic Creole redfish & tender Lamb Shanks! Great service. All around great night outdoors! Balcony come early to get seating on the Magazine St side Chef's table reserve to sit to see the cooking done in the open kitchen. (Next time!) Took me a minute to write this. Being a fellow Culinarian I decided to take our friends that were visiting from out of town for Brunch. One of our friends was pregnant and quite hungry. There was six of us for brunch. The waiter was celebrating hiding birthday and we even added a little extra cash to his pin he was wearing. We waited 1.25 hours for our food to come after we placed the order. Lots of blame was placed on the kitchen. I stood up from the table at the 1 hour mark and approached the manager to let her know its been a while and that we had a pregnant guest that was visiting from out of town. After coming close to walking out, our food finally came way over cooked. But we ate it because we were very hungry and we had to rush out the door to take our friends to the airport. Thinking our bill was going to be covered or wt least heavily discounted, we found out we only received a 10 percent discount and auto grated. 2 out of the 6 people were 8 year old kids .. that had to wait almost 1.5 hours to get at least a side of fries. Talk about multiple issues. Never coming in again

We ate here with two other couples for dinner but I've had the brunch here as well. The fish here is really terrific and the rest of the group liked theirs as well. The service was also very good and appropriately attentive. Be aware that the balcony can be very breezy and subject to weather events like thunderstorms. My major problem with the place is that its crazy noisy inside, like unable to carry on a cross table conversation and even the wait staff had trouble taking our order due to the noise inside the main upstairs dining room. If your sensitive to that, I'd avoid the place.

When planning our weekend excursion to New Orleans, my wife had heard about Gris-Gris's lovely cuisine. Naturally, we had to check out this spot located in the Garden District. We discovered they had a lovely outdoor balcony seating area on the second floor, which overlooked the streets below. This area was perfect for enjoying the mid-day brunch that we had for our Friday reservation. When you arrive through the red double doors on the ground level, you walk past a dining area with a counter wrapped around the kitchen if you want to enjoy watching the chef and staff preparing the food. Upon going up the winding stairs to the second floor, you have the choice of either being in a chic, French-styled bar or being on the balcony, in which the latter is where we were seated. My wife and I enjoyed some terrifically tasty cocktails, for starters. The Corpse Brew and the Cure were specifically delicious. The latter was a delightful black cardamom-infused bourbon with creme de cacao, black walnut, and orange bitters. For food, the pork belly and watermelon were fantastic to start the meal, so perfectly cooked and crisped to perfect with the perfect savoriness to balance the fruit sweetness. The Chicken Biscuits and Gravy were deeply satisfying, allowing me to go down the main street to check out the various shops without hunger pangs. If we came to New Orleans more frequently, we would pay another trip to Gris Gris. This restaurant and bar are tops.

Definitely stop in at Gris Gris for some high end food. The food was impeccable and delicious. Our waitress was great and provided solid recommendations. Beautiful location in the Garden District.

I had no idea Gris Gris was of culinary notoriety. I'm told the most coveted seats are right in the open kitchen as soon as you walk in where you can see them prepare your food. I disagree our seats in the second floor balcony where you have a view of Magazine st and hints of the NOLA skyline this evening was perfect. You can taste the quality in every bite from the gizzard grillades - soft in a bed of grits with brown gravy. My mother's chicken and dumplings were gourmet dumplings. The soup was thick and defines comfort food. But the reason for the five stars is - the sugar cane seared duck. Oh holy Jesus, I'm getting goosebumps again with this poultry. You need the sweet potatoes to offset the intensity of the duck especially when the salt bits explode in your mouth - Best Duck Ever period end of story.
