This D.C. Sushi Chef Dramatically Changes Omakase to Bring it to the Masses | Eater DC

"An emerging downtown food hall recruited Uchino when many landlords were reluctant to back a new, high-end omakase owner during the pandemic; two operators who had known him through industry ties brought him into the project and helped place his counter in the hall despite construction challenges. One of the operators explains the motivation: “I think it’s really important, when you identify talent, to help them be successful,” says Brandenburg. “I love having quality around. And Uchi is definitely quality.” The hall provided not just space but operational support that made opening possible." - Emily Venezky

Held over five figures of our funds with little to no feedback for six weeks. We finally had to get our customer to reverse an ACH transaction. Oh, and good luck getting a representative on the phone that has a firm grip on the English language. We will be closing our account soon. This is a dumpster fire of a company. If I could leave zero stars I would.

Square is a financial services company, originally intended to help small businesses accept credit card payments. HOWEVER, they LIE on their website. They claim that when you link the debit card to your bank account, you can get your money "instantly", "same day". That's TOTAL BS. I did exactly that. They said they had to hold my money because my company had to be "reviewed". My company has been in business for 13 years, and is a public non-profit in good standing, and publicly listed on Candid. They gave me no reason for this "review" and won't give me MY money. Oh, and don't bother calling their "customer service". Their call center is in GUATEMALA. The folks at said call center don't understand English, can barely speak English, are RUDE and talk over you, and hang up on you. They have no power or authority to help you in any way. They won't let you speak to a supervisor, and are UTTERLY USELESS. They, also, charge outrageous fees. I would give them NEGATIVE stars if I could.

Title: Unfair Account Deactivation & Funds Withheld Review: I am the owner of Elite Pressure Pros, a small business in Missouri. I opened a Square account on August 13, 2025 to process legitimate customer payments. Just two days later, on August 15, 2025, Square deactivated my account without prior warning and withheld $501.65 in business funds, stating they will not release them until November 13, 2025. Square has provided no specific written reason for this action, despite repeated requests. This withholding has caused direct harm to my business, preventing me from paying my phone bill and purchasing essential supplies to complete scheduled jobs. Due to the severity of this situation, I have filed formal complaints with the Missouri Attorney General, Better Business Bureau, Federal Trade Commission, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. I would strongly caution other small businesses to carefully consider these risks before using Square’s services.

DONT USE THEM. I will be suing them in San Francisco California!!! I’m pretty sure this is where all of you who they also stole money from must sue them. We opened a new account, took a $2700.00 payment, was asked for verification. We provided LEGIT verification then was informed the account would be deactivated and money held for 90 days. There are hundreds if not thousands of people all claiming the same thing. Some of whom are claiming they have yet to get their money back. What’s even crazier is, we have another account with them that we have had for over 4 years and have processed well over 500k through them! They will steal your money and I doubt you will see it again. I thought this was a good company, was I wrong!

Absolutely the worst experience I've ever had with a payment processor. I signed up for Square to accept ACH payments from a customer. The platform let me create and send the invoice, and the customer submitted payment. Several days later, Square deactivated my account without any explanation. At first, they claimed the funds were never withdrawn — but days later, I received notice that the money was taken from my customer's account. Since then, I’ve been caught in a nightmare of customer support loops. I can’t issue a refund through the dashboard because my account is deactivated. Support repeatedly told me it was “being escalated” and that the funds would be returned to the customer in 2 business days — it's been over a week and nothing has happened. Every time I reach out, I’m transferred from one rep to another, and no one can provide a resolution or even basic follow-up. This company is clearly not equipped to handle legitimate business needs, especially when large amounts of money are involved. Absolutely unacceptable. I would strongly advise other small businesses to stay far away from Square.

I’ve been a loyal Square user for over 8 years, relying on them for both scheduling and point-of-sale services. That trust was shattered when my business account was hacked—even though I had two-step verification enabled. I caught the breach within 23 minutes and immediately contacted Square. Shockingly, I was informed that my account ownership had been changed, and I was completely locked out—with no way to access my schedule, POS system, or over 3,000 clients’ data. Even more concerning: Square has no fraud department and no real recourse for business owners. I was told someone would follow up within 24 hours. It’s now been 36 hours. No response. No solution. Just 8+ hours on the phone, going in circles, while my business—and my clients’ data—remains exposed and vulnerable. Square was great until I actually needed help. If you’re a small business owner, be aware: once something goes wrong, you’re completely on your own. Square has failed me when it mattered most.

Dude, I've been using Square for over a decade to bill my clients, and I messed up. I accidentally charged a customer with my personal card instead of the business one. I immediately refunded them, but Square still charged me a fee. I called customer service to get them to waive the fee since it was my mistake, not theirs. I refunded the money right away, you know? But they wouldn't budge, said they couldn't dispute the fee. Seriously, that's not cool. I'm done with Square, starting today. Stripe it is from now on.

I used Square (Squareup) once to process a payment for a guitar repair through my small business. After attempting to transfer the funds to my debit card, I received an email saying my account was deactivated and that the funds would be held for 90 days — with absolutely no reason given. I contacted customer service. The first rep said he didn’t know why the account was shut down but promised to escalate and call me back. He never did. When I called again, the second rep refused to check the case notes, refused to connect me to a manager, and hung up on me when I mentioned recording the call (even though they record their own calls). Now, I can’t reach anyone — just an automated message that blocks further support. I never violated any policy, and the money was never even transferred — it’s just sitting in Square’s account. No warning, no justification, and no way to resolve it. This is an outrageous way to treat small business owners. If you're considering using Square, be warned: they can take your money and disappear behind automated walls.
