15 Great Asian-Owned Coffee And Tea Shops In NYC

"We're not sure if Squarrel Cafe is primarily a place to play board games that happens to also serve coffee, or if it's mainly a cafe where you can also play some Jenga and Risk. We're leaning toward the former, because as soon as you walk in, you'll see a whole wall of hundreds of games, and it'll seem like you're in a Toys "R" Us rather than a coffee shop. This spot, just a few blocks from Barclays Center, has several tables in the back where you can play whatever you want for $5/person for three hours (or $70/month for unlimited gaming and one free beverage per day). Order a matcha latte or some bubble tea while you're here, and if you get hungry while trying to think of a word that contains both a "V" and a "J," get some crunchy popcorn chicken and a tuna mayo rice ball. If you come here and decide to start a game of Catan, say goodbye to your whole day, and be glad caffeine is just a few steps away for the next several hours." - esther cho, with warm welcome, kenny yang

Where To Eat With Someone You Don't Like Talking To

"Someone you've already cancelled on three times still wants to meet up, and they insist on doing it on a Saturday afternoon. This is what you get for lying about having to work late on that random Tuesday when you actually had nothing else going on. Squarrel Cafe, a few blocks from Barclays Center, has hundreds of board games, any of which you can play for $5/person for three hours. This cafe has bubble tea and coffee drinks as well as snacks like popcorn chicken, and you two will be so busy trying to think of words that contain a "Q" or a "J" that talking will be at a minimum." - kenny yang

Google
Nice cozy little spot with a lot of character and good service. They are absolutely loaded with board games of all kinds so it’s a nice little spot for locals to come together, chill, and play some games. I had good coffee and strangely good popcorn chicken. As you can see from the photo, the presentation of the chicken wasn’t much but don’t let the picture fool you it was actually pretty damn flavorful and affordable. I would order it again… Side note, the bathroom was also modern and clean which is always a much welcome benefit in a NYC establishment.

Google
I love this place. I always stop by for a drink. My favorite is the grilled cheese sandwich but they have variety of drinks and a few food items. The grilled cheese has abundant amount of cheese not your average grilled cheese. It is very filling and done fresh on the spot. I get a drip coffee with almond milk to go along with it. Sometimes the tables in the back are very crowded with people playing the vintage board games that you can play for a small fee. Overall it's a great cozy and super fun place to get a small bite and drink plus play boardgames.

Google
Went for an event tried the waffle and a coffee drink from a special menu they were offering I'm not sure if it's a regular menu item, but was very good. Also went back and had a regular cappuccino it was also really good. The place was very clean and super cute

Google
Nice spot for those who like table games and good quality of coffee. Cool, hippie vibe. The only negative part about this place is customer service of baristas. Very rude, had her headphones on her head and barely heard what I was ordering. Plastic cup with cover for ice coffee is good idea though.

Google
My friends and I just spent 3 awesome hours playing Tycoon Raccoon, eating rice ball snacks, and drinking bubble tea! Squarrel Cafe is a great place: the atmosphere is very chill, the people are nice, and the game library is huge. It’s our new go-to spot for game nights!

Dante Piro

Google
I can't recommend Squarrel Cafe enough! If you have been struggling finding a home for your game night or DnD sessions, reach out-- they are more than accommodating for table reservations and making your group fit. For $15 for all-day gaming, it doesn't get better than this.

Lily Grace

Google
My friends and I love this place! We've come a couple of times now, and we always have a great time! The fee to play games for 3 hours is only $8 and $15 to play all day, so it's pretty affordable! The food and drinks also tend to be good, as well. I got an oatmilk matcha strawberry latte, and I was able to taste both flavors well.

Ariana Kha

Google
Employees kicked us out abruptly. One of the staff members with curly hair and glasses is extremely rude. She was impolite and did not explain what was happening. After ordering our drinks/ food we were promptly told “we have to ask you guys to leave now” with hardly any warning or understanding. Overall poor hospitality which is unfortunate considering the nice atmosphere.

Yelp
A down to earth bubble tea spot close to the trains. Prices are reasonable and quality is mid-tier. Also not too sweet!

Yelp
Really like the concept of this place and how you can rent out board games! There is definitely decent seating, but heard it gets packed in the evenings and weekends. I came here in the morning I got a less sweet early grey latte, that was quite good - a bit too milky forward. Would come back with some friends in the future!

Kat L.

Yelp
Came in for some boba drinks after a concert, has a calm quiet relaxing atmosphere, A/C inside is great and was able to cool down after a hot summer day outside walking around

Yelp
I was looking for a bubble tea spot and stumbled upon this place. I didn't realize that this is a board game cafe until I stepped inside. Overall, I loved the vibe and would've totally stay longer if I wasn't in a rush. I really like the bubble tea selection where you can mix and match tea base and fruit flavor drinks. I got chrysanthemum with passion fruit with no toppings which turned out to the alright. I loved the cup though! The cup is not only super cute but there's a tiny detachable cap at the top where you can seal your drink if you no longer have your bubble tea straw in. Perfect to take on the go and for occasions where you can't finish your drink in one go. Would definitely come back here to try the other drinks next time and also check out the different games since they sure do have some cool varieties!

Nora A.

Yelp
Awesome! I always get the bubble tea on the beach and I kid you not lit is so delicious.

Yelp
Solid space with friendly people and a great collection of board games. Coffee drinks are solid as well.

Yelp
I come here semi-regularly for boba drinks. I love that they have both almond milk and oat milk available (for 75 cents extra) to make drinks more vegan-friendly. Toppings like boba/tapioca is extra as well, so it does kind of add up and make a drink a tad more expensive. But I see boba drinks as a treat so it's ok. It's also not a giant chain or franchise (as far as I know), so I'm happy to support a small business. The boba is always perfect. A couple times I've had to wait while they make more boba because they've just run out. But the boba texture is always perfectly soft but a little chewy. I also enjoy that I can have one of their many coffee drinks with boba, also customizable with alternative milks and less sugar and no sugar options. The staff is always super nice, too. I haven't been there to play board games as a lot of people go there to do, but it seems like fun.

Yelp
I tip all baristas except here. When I was in restaurants years ago, you got a tip for service performed, in addition to the price of the service. Meaning provide great service for tips. Be great America!! Or they hate me cause I'm a straight man.
google avatar

Karen X.

Yelp
Large space in the back with a bunch of board games. It's a pretty neat space for different purposes. The drinks are pretty good. The front is more of a cafe feel where you can read or chat leisurely. The back seems more for big groups or if you want to play some board games.

Yelp
I love it here! Despite this place being a board cafe, the store was very quiet. I guess they are missing me to rowdy this place up! Before playing, the worker requested our vaccination cards, so keep that in mind! $5 all day is seriously also such a steal. I can literally stay there all day. Since we came on a particular Sunday when they were doing a Game Night event, we were able to stay past 6PM, their typical closing hour. There aren't too many games to choose from, but my friends and I were able to have fun with the same 2 games. There were also drinks available, and I even saw crystal boba as a topping option, so I would definitely love to go back to try, as their drinks seem super solid. The owner/manager and workers were very friendly and accommodating. I definitely think a lot of regulars come here to chill or even just for their drinks. Definitely check Squarrel Cafe out!

Yelp
good drinks and friendly staff. the place was more spacious and less intense than some of the Manhattan board game spots. Decent selection of games

Yelp
This is a Phenomenal cafe that's affordable, so inviting, with great drinks and cudstomer service

Yelp
The boba tea was good, but I had gone there to get some work done and that was hard to do. There are few outlets and they have big tables (with one person at each of the few tables when I went). The environment and volume was good until around the time kids get out of school, then it got really loud. If you're looking for somewhere to get work done, this isn't the place I'd recommend. If you're looking for great boba tea to go, definitely stop by.

Kristen G.

Yelp
This place is right outside of Atlantic terminal/Barclays...tons of seating, TONS of board games, and excellent coffee (hot, fresh, flavor options) It's not a chic spot- it's def got more of a chill vibe to it. Would I travel far to come here? Probably not. If you're in the area and need a place to wait for your train, this is a cool spot.

Christopher E.

Yelp
Good food (Chicken sandwich and rice balls stick out) and drinks and game night is great.

Shaun F.

Yelp
awesome place! Lots of board games, tasty drinks, and fun atmosphere! Definitely check it out! always a good place!

Beau C.

Yelp
The concept of this place is really cool- drinks and board games! They have a very extensive collection of games, which I greatly appreciate. I believe it was $15/person for a full day and a few bucks less for an hour or 3 hours. Didn't play any games this time but I did get a chai latte. It was under the "all time favorites" board, which gave me the impression that it was an all time favorite of this shop. I was incorrect in that assumption. I do not recommend it at all. Cup was only 3/4 full. The chai spices were hardly noticeable as it tasted mostly of milk...truly unfortunate. I really do appreciate the concept of this cafe so I may return for bubble tea or coffee so I can get the full experience with the board games. I'll rate again if it happens :/

Yelp
Ahh, I really wish there was a place like this for us youngsters when I was back in high school. This game is exactly what I imagined a board game cafe would be like and it actually serves decent drinks. I came with a party of 3 on a Thursday afternoon to chat and play some friendly board games and we all had a fun time! The current pricing is $5 for 3 hours and they have basically all of the board games you can think of, plus more! I was super happy to see that they had one of my favorites, Pandemic. Being that my friends and I are nurses, we HAD to play that one. The game cards were all laminated nicely, which we really appreciated. I ordered a latte, while my friends ordered their fruit teas. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their drinks. They also serve snacks for the grumbly tummies. I definitely recommend coming here to check out their board game collection. One thing to note is that if you are planning to study/do homework here, you may be disrupted by others who are playing board games or students who are coming by after school.

Arturo Q.

Yelp
Espresso cup of coffee is great, did not try food menu items. Has a unique board game rental theme, it appears that many friends gather here to catch up and have a great time together. Can feel crowded at times!

Yelp
Love this place! Yummy Boba Drinks. Outlets (which can be hard to find in NYC coffee shops sometimes) and Great AC. I def wanna visit again and hopefully play a game next time.

Yelp
Just another warm day in BK, and I needed something sweet and refreshing. So a friend recommended Squarrel while I waited for the LIRR. Not only are the tea combos yummy, the cafe is full of games that you can play with friends and strangers! I love it and will always make a stop when I'm in the area.
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
Love that this is a board game cafe. They seem to have a wide array of game options and the tables are spacious to allow for game play. I came in for breakfast and was excited to have a taro latte because as a non-coffee drinker it is always exciting to see multiple non-coffee options. I was disappointed to see that all of their drinks are made from powders instead of any fresh ingredients and their pastries were a bit wilted looking. Wouldn't come back just for a tea but would definitely come with friends for a board game night.
google avatar

Jia Yi C.

Yelp
i always get their original boba milk tea. it's really good. the only downside is that they take really long with orders.

Yelp
I had a BLAST playing games here with my friends! Do note you have to show your vaccination card in order to play so be prepared to have it at hand (picture works). The workers were very nice to let us be seated first while we tried to get that sorted out. Also, it would be a good idea to do reservations beforehand if possible because pretty much all the tables were reserved/filled when we went late on Sunday afternoon, luckily we were able to get a free table at the front of the cafe. (I think they said it was also game night or some kind of game event day too) This was my first time at a board game cafe but it is quite different from what I expected in a pleasant way. There are no rowdy groups; everybody played civil manner with indoor volume. I lowkey worry me and my friends may have been the loudest that day because the games got us quite heated. I did notice a more private room towards the back of the cafe next to the bathroom. Also major props for how clean it is here. Even though we were only a party of 3, there were a number of options we could pick from the game shelf. Sad they didn't have that sword stabbing into barrel pirate game because people broke them ( I hope they restock that game again). We didn't play much, to be specific, we only played two games but two hours flew by like nothing. Definitely would be a good idea to come here early so you can play more and it's amazing how it's $5 to play games all day long, what a deal! We paid after playing. I would definitely be down to go here again with friends. I hope they know I'm waiting for next time :)

Yelp
Still as great as I remember during my first visit a few years ago. I first found out about the Squarrel Cafe after attending a Yelp elite event here, before the pandemic. I had such a great time and I knew, that it was a great place to return to. Well, I decided to meet up with a gentleman for our first date at Squarrel Cafe. It was ideal as we we had connected via a dating app. It offered a public setting that encourages conversation without pressure. We visited on a Saturday evening, about 2 hours prior to closing. I paid about $5 each for us to place unlimited games. He purchased us drinks and we just sat for hours talking and playing a host of games. The ambience isn't extremely loud and they have an impressive variety of games including board games and card games; all in great condition. Our drinks were good, nothing spectacular but they hit the spot. We ended up staying past closing time. I'm not sure what closing actually means here because we left after 10 and there was a group (including a few staff) playing a card game, very intently lol. Nonetheless, we enjoyed ourselves. Staff was very friendly and attentive. I'll be returning again and I highly recommend it to others!

Yelp
I'm an unabashed board game geek. My friends and I plan monthly game days. I own a bunch of games and expansion packs. I recently went to Philly for PAX Unplugged (essentially a massive three-day board game convention). You get the point. I was thrilled to learn about Squarrel Cafe and its relative proximity to me. The Yelp event was a blast, so I knew I had to return. $5 to play board/card games for as long as your heart desires, especially when the place closes at midnight on a Saturday? SOLD. My friend and I spent practically 8.5 hours here. We played Horrified, Tokaido, and Plague, all really fun games in their own ways. We actually played Plague with Ming, the owner, during the cafe's quieter moments. He explained the game to us and was generally super friendly. He was also open to game suggestions and said they might host some tournaments in the future. Don't skip out on the drinks either. Ming made me a great taro latte with a nice, rich foam on top. My friend got the yuan yang, a Hong Kong favorite of coffee mixed with milk tea. It was comforting and not too sweet. Whether you're a game fanatic or a casual player, this is a great place to visit and try some new games. People also stopped by just to buy a drink and relax, if that's more up your alley.

Yelp
Squarrel Cafe manages to pull off a calm, relaxing vibe in the middle of one of the busiest neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Walking in is like being transported to a quiet living room at a friend's apartment, which also happens to have great drinks and tons of board games. When I went, the board games weren't in use - most folks were quietly plugging away at their work individually. But there is plenty of communal seating, and I can see the cafe being equal parts working space + social space for board game enthusiasts. I had an earl gray latte, which was great, especially since the barista asked how sweet I would like it (not very) and adjusted to my tastes. Really great local vibe, and a nice place to work/chill, especially if you're trying to take a break from the downtown BK noise for a little while.
google avatar

Bill Z.

Yelp
This place is really nice. You can either unwind here, getting, for example, a beverage and lounging at a table in the front or back, or you can get wound up unleashing your competitive nature against your opponents by getting involved in some game. Or do both if you can multi-task. The game selection here wasn't quite as large as I was expecting, but they've got enough of a variety to satisfy everyone, and the price to game is a bargain! I think the staff here enjoy creating their beverages for you. When I walked in, I said I wanted something cold to drink, and I was told they could make cold versions of many of the hot beverages, and even mix-and-match a bit. So I got a chai-based beverage infused with peach, admittedly something the woman who waited on me said she hadn't tried previously. She was even willing to replace the drink for free if I didn't enjoy the finished product - but I did enjoy it, the combination of flavors was intriguing and refreshing. It's pleasant and well-maintained here. It's a great place to have a time-out or to get your game on.
google avatar

Cathy K.

Yelp
Perfect spot for cold rainy weekend. Was busy when we stopped there, service was friendly. There's a limited special right now, only $5 per person for unlimited play!!! Apparently there's a few pastry items but they were sold out. Bathroom is decent. Diverse crowd. Their staff favorites menu was pretty good, got something with "beach" in it, peach oolong with strawberry and lychee and really good crystal boba - I think my favorite part. Great location by Barclays Center.
google avatar

Irene A.

Yelp
This place is awesome! They have delicious drinks and a great selection of games. Drop in almost any evening to find a friendly group to play with
google avatar

Natasha P.

Yelp
Super cute Asian inspired cafe with a twist. They have a bunch of board games and puzzles that you can play with a friend or groups of friends. The menu is very much Asian inspired so you're not going to find your typical peppermint tea here. I opted for the Earl grey tea with tapioca balls. Very authentic and tasty. Cafe is super clean and I absolutely love the barn doors
google avatar

Mike A.

Yelp
Nice vibe, good coffee. Looks a casual hangout spot for people. A lot of people playing board games. Staff was friendly.
google avatar

Kim F.

Yelp
Our niece introduced us to cold brew with vanilla and oat milk. This spot had a delicious version. The customer service is great and the space is inviting, with many tables and games for adults and kids. We loved the reusable cups and lids with no straws. There are no pastries, so stop in your favorite bakery to get a bite.
google avatar

Su L.

Yelp
Small board game cafe located close to Atlantic Terminal. They have a range of teas and bubble tea drinks available at modest prices. The main thing you come here for is their board game cafes, which are available at $5 per person, and you can play all day. The ambience is very simple and sparse. Service is friendly, but it's an order and pay at the counter sort of place.
google avatar

Iris H.

Yelp
Such a cute cafe! We stopped in here before heading out of the city. It's on the main street and then moment you walk in it's like leaving all of th noise and hectic day to day behind you. The cafe is amazingly quiet and the barista was delightful as we asked questions before ordering. This cafe has both bubble tea and loose leaf tea depending on what you're looking for. They have a suite of boardgames and puzzles you can use for $5. They also have a large HP constructed 3-D puzzle for decor. The space had plenty of seating if you're in a group of 5-7 and the entire space was super clean. Highly recommend coming here and if you get hungry there's a falafel spot next door.

Shereena F.

Yelp
The environment at Squarrel cafe seems fun and inviting. I was pleased with the fast and friendly service.
google avatar

Sachil S.

Yelp
They make one of the best americanos in the city. I am three every week after my salsa class.
google avatar

Cheyenne T.

Yelp
Super stuffy and not my vibe. They have board gams night but the space is super cramped.

Lawrence L.

Yelp
I really like how friendly and fun environment this cafe presents with so many different and unique board games. Definitely would be fun for anyone who loves to play board games casually. The chrysanthemum strawberry tea with lychee jelly was ok, nothing bad or spectacular about it. It's more of a refreshing drink, but I will give credit for the store trying to be innovative of different combinations. Overall, I would come back and give it another chance for snacks and to play board games.
google avatar

Rachel O.

Yelp
Love this place! The barista is always very friendly and he makes a great cappuccino. I can't wait for Covid to be over so we can play board games. Also, the sink and air dryer in the bathroom is the coolest thing I've ever seen lol.
google avatar

Kimmy U.

Yelp
Squarrel Cafe is super close to Barclays/Atlantic, so it's a good location to stop by for coffee/tea and boardgames. It looks like most people come for the board games, since they have a $5 fee to play all day. We've never really been interested in staying for games.. so I've come a few times for drinks. The first time we came, I tried their iced earl grey latte which wasn't bad! It was a newer item on the menu, so they were still trying it out. I'm always a little skeptical to get boba at a place that doesn't solely make it/specialize in it.. but I wanted to give it a try anyways. Unfortunately, they were still making it, but offered white pearls instead. These are totally different in texture, so don't expect the same! I got it with the peach oolong tea. my drink was veryy watery :( and the peach flavor tasted more artificial, similar to those del monte or dole peach cups that are soaked in syrup. I'd still come to try the coffee drinks, but probably pass on the tea!
google avatar

Rashon B.

Yelp
Squarrel is an awesome spot down the block from the Atlantic terminal and around the corner from Barclays. Went here the other day to and enjoyed some games, eats and drinks with friends. They have a bunch of new and old games to choose from... we started with DOS (the sister game to Uno), it was interesting. Soon after we played Uno. There is nothing like the original. We even recruited Ming (the owner) the join. Def a spot to grab a warm cup of coffee and chill during the day too. I'll def be back with my laptop or good book during the week. Cheers!
google avatar

Tracy S.

Yelp
Such a cute place and open during this stay at home order. Their hours are flexed but Saturday's they're open from 9-5pm and they have doordash too. Great place for bubble tea if you don't have any options near you. Hope to come back again to play games with friends next time.
google avatar

Irene L.

Yelp
Descent bubble tea and friendly service It's $5 to play board games all day. Place is spacious and clean. Also the bathroom sink is really cool. It converts into a hand dryer.
google avatar

Raymond T.

Yelp
A newly opened cafe to get coffee, tea, study, and play boardgames! I came here first for a boardgame event and came back again with my friends to play more games. The owner Ming was very friendly and a big gamer. Its only $5 per person to stay unlimited and play games. They have dominion, Catan, coup, dixit, escape the room, etc. They even have some Chinese boardgames that look really cool (although completely in Chinese). In the back of the cafe is six large tables as well as a separate room for some more private gaming if you desire. The drinks are served in large cups and the plastic is hard enough that you can probably take them home and reuse it. If you're looking for a chill, cheap, and quiet place to hang with friends, I highly recommend this place. The only thing that could make this place better is if they serve alcohol.
google avatar

Correy K.

Yelp
What a cute little place to hang out. Many flavors for tea and coffee. Bring your friends or meet new ones. Come hang out and play games! Yes, this new hideaway on Atlantic Ave is perfect to visit after a long day or an event at Barclays. The neighborhood has already been taking advantage of this place and setting up birthday parties and lunch meetups. It has fresh cakes from a local bakery. There is a back room for private parties of 6-8 as well as tables in the main section and the front of the cafe by the window. I tried the Lychee Bubble tea -I'll visit again and relax after a day of shopping in the local stores.
google avatar

Shanelle S.

Yelp
Cozy cafe with board games and coffees/teas. You could pay $5 to play all day, and you could also just grab a drink and go. Theres a drink that has coffee and tea (yuan cha I think is what it's called, but I could be wrong). The drink was ~$5 and very warm and comforting. It was also tasty - it was like a milk tea mixed with black coffee. If you check in on yelp you can get 10% off your order. We luckily got the back private room which also had a space heater so that it was warmer. We played exploding kittens for multiple rounds and just hung out enjoying each other's company plus our drinks. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. There is a gender neutral bathroom that you can ask the staff for the code. There's plenty of board game options and it's a chill vibe. It's a good activity for a rainy day or for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Yelp
Really cute cafe with a huge selection of board games!! Kept the kids entertained and away from their phones :) Good drinks too! Loved the Assam lychee tea and passion fruit milk tea. Great croissants too
