The Best New Restaurants Around Boston, July 2025 | Eater Boston

"Owner Manju Kaushal created Ssaanjh — a Punjabi word for “friendship” — to tap into something that many Bostonians have been looking for: An upscale Indian restaurant with an ambitious menu that showcases regional dishes less commonly seen in Boston. In other words, it wants to “challenge your perception of the subcontinent,” as the restaurant puts it. Sample the Mumbai-style shrimp koliwada, battered and fried tiger shrimp served with tomato sauce, curry leaves, pickled radish, and flowers, and don’t miss the Jaipuri laal maas, a rich, red curry with sweet chili paste and tender cuts of slow-cooked lamb bathing in the bowl. Be prepared to wait at peak dinner time, but the lunchtime scene is more relaxed." - Erika Adams

The Best Dishes Eater Boston’s Editor Ate This Month | Eater Boston

"Only four weeks old, the dining room was surprisingly busy — I managed to get a seat at the bar after a small wait at 8:30 p.m., and the dining room remained packed well past 9 p.m.; service was scrambled. Owner Manju Kaushal’s goal — to "shine a finer dining light on regional Indian dishes in Boston" — is evident in the cooking. The laal maas was singled out: "a thick, rich Rajasthan curry made with a sweet chili paste served in a bowl with cubes of slow-cooked lamb on the night I visited" that "warmed me to my core, transporting me far away from the last dredges of this tough Boston winter." Despite some early-service hiccups, the food made the visit, and the reviewer urged readers to "get yourself a reservation... stat." - Erika Adams

4 Major Restaurant Openings to Know Around Boston, January 2025 | Eater Boston

"Named for a Punjabi word meaning “friendship,” this welcoming Brookline Indian restaurant from Manju Kaushal (formerly of Sher-a-Punjab in Quincy) aims to broaden local perceptions of the subcontinent by spotlighting lesser-seen regional plates. Standouts include a Goan-style shrimp in a subtly spicy coconut milk curry and the famed Jaipuri lal maas—slow-cooked goat in a sweet chili paste—while a shahi waffle, a playful twist on shahi tukda bread pudding, has already become an early hit." - Erika Adams

My wife and I visited ssaanjh recently as part of a special occasion drawn in by good reviews and awards. While the presentation of each food item was well done, we found that the actual flavor fell flat. It wasn’t bad, but rather lacked depth and complexity- was some of the most average Indian food in New England. The gulab jamun and the condensed rose milk the use in the tart also tasted surprisingly similar to the canned versions you can find at the Indian grocer. This is a good place for casual dining if you’re just looking for some comfort food, but if you’re expecting top level Indian food, I would be cautious.

This new Indian restaurant is absolutely amazing. It’s the best Indian food I’ve ever had. The space feels upscale and beautifully designed, and the presentation of the food was just as impressive. We tried a variety of dishes, from appetizers to entrees to desserts, and every single one was delicious and thoughtfully crafted. The owner even gave us some great recommendations, which made the experience even better. A must-visit for anyone who loves Indian cuisine.

Visiting from London, I am used to very very good Indian food. That being said, this may be one of my favourite Indian meals of all time. The food was just so amazing. The butter chicken was smokey, spicy but with lots of depth of flavour. We also had a lamb dish, and a couple of starters, all of which were yummy. The portion sizes were great and comfortably fed three of us. They sell Indian larger to accompany. The service was also fab, the staff are so friendly. They’ve only been open four months, and if I come back to Boston, they will be first on my list to visit.

We visited this Indian restaurant on a busy night! The vibe was amazing and full of energy. We ordered the Kale and Sakarkandi chaat, Dahi Puri, and Jackfruit Kofta (which came with a bowl of rice) — everything was absolutely delicious. The cheese-stuffed naan and garlic naan were both interesting and so flavorful! The cocktails were another highlight — each one had a special touch that made them unique and memorable. Desserts looked super tempting, but we were way too full from all the incredible food to try any this time. Definitely looking forward to going back!

As someone who's lived and grown up in 5+ cities in India, I can say with confidence that the food served here is as good as what you'll find at some of the best restaurants in the country. I don't think I've ever had better Indian food in this country. I appreciate the amount of thought that's been put into every dish and the courtesy and kindness of the staff!

The ambience was very good, and the service was excellent with minimal wait time. Among the cocktails, the Aam Panna stood out as the best, even better than the Chai Martini. I also tried the mango passion fruit mocktail, which was absolutely amazing. For appetizers, we had the beetroot croquettes and kale chaat — both were excellent. In the main course, we ordered tandoori and garlic naan paired with paneer pasinda and jackfruit kofta curry. The jackfruit kofta curry was just okay, not as impressive as the rest, but overall, the food was really good. The restaurant space was quite small, and the tables for two felt a bit cramped. Price-wise, it was reasonable. I would definitely recommend trying this place at least once!

Had a fantastic dinner. Recommended by my daughter who had been there earlier it was a great experience. The food presentation, service and ambiance was all on point. The appetizers were very interesting and the presentation was lovely. The staff was warm, friendly and courteous. Definitely recommend the restaurant. The only thing I would recommend is to make reservations so as not to be disappointed and also look into parking if one is driving there. We were lucky that we could find parking quickly. It’s paid parking though.

The restaurant has great vibes, food is great. It has distinct take on indian cuisine. We enjoyed the butter chicken but the portion was small. Appetizers were the best so far. I never had better apperizers in all indian restaurants in boston area ( I tried many!) . Drinks are a bit overpriced especially mocktails! Over all I recommend going there you will enjoy the food

Yelp
I don't often write reviews, but this place truly deserves one. After trying every Indian restaurant in the greater Boston area, I can confidently say this is the best Indian food around. I'm so impressed, this is my first review in over 10 years! We had a great selection of dishes: pani puri, chicken 65, Hyderabadi biryani, butter chicken, jackfruit kofta, kale salad, chili cheese naan, garlic naan, and two amazing tamarind-inspired alcoholic drinks. The highlights for me were the butter chicken, kale salad, biryani, naan, and pani puri. The flavors are exceptional -- smoky but balanced and perfectly layered. You can tell they really understand how to work with these ingredients and techniques. The raita served with the biryani was a standout too, really elevated the dish. The setting/ambiance was awesome. New modern Indian restaurants do not exist in Boston and thank god there is this one. This seemed perfect for families like us with kids but also for a date. As for the service, I'm honestly puzzled by any negative reviews. The owner is one of the kindest people I've met, and I think it's important to remember how challenging it is to run a restaurant, especially one that's newly opened. So the stars should be 5/5The food speaks for itself, and I'm grateful to have such high-quality Indian food in the area, which we need more of in general given how crappy our food scene is. There's wait if you don't make a reservation, as it should be. And it's cold so don't ding the restaurant for not calling ahead. Overall- incredible food, kindest people, awesome ambiance. Add this to Boston too list, Definitely coming back more often!

Yelp
Finally found the best place for delicious butter chicken in the Boston area! Food: MUST GET- The Ssaanjh special butter chicken is the star of this restaurant. The tandoori chicken has a smoky flavor that pairs perfectly with the creamy buttery sauce. This dish tastes exactly like authentic butter chicken you can find in London. Other dishes we got: Apps: Baked malai tikka- cooked to tender creamy perfection, could have more spice Achari salmon- all their meat dishes are high quality. This one tasted like a regular salmon, slightly fishy taste, with a little bit of seaweed salad on top. Could have more Indian spices and have nori strips instead to enhance the fusion flavor Kale and sakarkandi chaat- SO good! The kale is crispy and the sweet potato is soft, portion size could be bigger :) It tastes very similar to the palak chaat at Rasika in DC (another amazing Indian fusion restaurant) Charred corn and avocado- it was ok, could have more flavor Dahi ke kabab- the kabab itself could have more hung curd flavor, but the tomato chutney that came with it was spicy and delicious Dahi puri- the yogurt mousse makes it light and airy, definitely very creative but could have more spice Entrees: Highly recc the lamb shank Nihari- the meat falls right off the bone Jaipuri lal maas- tomato-heavy flavor with tender pieces of goat Dessert: Highly recc the gulab jamun tart- the juicy gulab jamun over a bed of soft rasmalai is heavenly Other: Friendly staff, fast service Elevated fine dining ambiance TLDR; Come here for an Indian fusion experience and the best butter chicken in the city that lives up to its hype

Yelp
Probably one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the area! They offer a modern take on Indian food and drinks, along with having a beautiful space for friends and family to come together and eat. Got to try their lamb kadai, goan shrimp curry, chicken biryani, garlic naan, sesame naan, mango lassi, and the Ssaanjh Dessert Pot. Honestly, everything was delicious. If I had to choose just one to highlight, their lamb kadai is one I would get again and again -- I have ordered it every time I've visited. Their dessert pot also was delicious -- I'm not exactly sure if they use saffron ice cream or something similar, but it definitely adds to the lovely chocolate dessert (and it's also super cute and aesthetic). The first time my husband and I went, they did forget to bring one of the items we ordered and had to ask them to take it off the check, but the second time I went with friends, the service was generally pretty quick and caring -- they did a great job checking in on us and was very kind. :) They do lean more upscale/fine dining side, so they can be a tad pricey, but it's a nice treat to have sometimes! Will definitely be coming back again!

Yelp
Yelp Review for Ssaanjh Indian Restaurant: I had high hopes for Ssaanjh as it recently opened and has a modern, inviting ambiance. Unfortunately, the experience fell flat. The food, while beautifully presented, lacked depth of flavor--something you'd expect to shine in Indian cuisine. Additionally, the service was disappointing; inattentive, leaving much to be desired. I wanted to love this place, but it needs significant improvement in both food and service to match its promising start. Hoping it can grow into its potential!

Yelp
Just went this weekend to try out the new restaurant in Brookline! The overall ambience and hospitality was great. The waiters were attentive and the food came out pretty fast. I could tell they were nervous since this is a new place but they did great. The drink I got was really tasty with the right tanginess. The dahi puri was okay. I felt like I got a lot of the mousse flavor than the content of the puri. The crispy cauliflower was one of my favorites. It was spicy and the sauce paired really nicely. The chicken 65 was okay. It has a similar flavor profile to the crispy cauliflower and very juicy chicken. I did wish the crispy cauliflower and chicken 65 had more quantity but was still good. For mains we got the jackfruit kofta, murgh vindaloo, and spinach corn and ricotta dish with garlic naan. The naan was made perfectly. The mains were very enjoyable and my favorite was spinach corn and ricotta dish. For dessert we got the Ssaanjh dessert pot. It was a unique experience and fun to eat out of. Overall my group had a great time and would like to come again to try the other dishes.

Yelp
A new addition to Brookline, I was excited that an Indian food restaurant was opened in one of my favorite areas for Asian food. I highly recommend making a reservation on a Friday night or during the weekend because this place gets busy and packed fast! My friend and I dropped in without a reservation around 5:30PM on a Friday, and thankfully, we were able to have a table. The vibes are aesthetically pleasing because the furniture is new and the lighting is nice. Service was overall great as well. Food is on the pricey side, and I wouldn't say serving sizes are huge, so be ready to spend a bit of money if you want to eat a lot. Their sesame naan is my top recommendation from what we ordered! Absolute best!

Yelp
It's been a long time since I've had really good Indian food and I'm so glad that my friend and I tried Ssaanjh on a cold Boston winter day! Each dish was delicious. We got the chicken tikka masala, masala bhindi, Pani puri, garlic naan, and mango lassi - perfect for lunch. The staff were very attentive and friendly. The place was nicely decorated and it felt 'upscale.' My only recommendation would to remove the table that's blocking the way to the restroom and add a thicker curtain to block out the cold outside air.

Yelp
We were excited to try this new Indian restaurant in Brookline. The restaurant staff were attentive and helpful with recommendations, and the food arrived quickly. We started with few appetizers - Dahi puri was decent , though I wasn't a fan of the yogurt mousse. My husband didn't mind it though. The baked Malai tikka was decent as well, chicken was cooked perfectly. For the mains, the butter chicken is an absolute must try - rich and flavorful. We asked them to make it spicy and it was great. The dal makhani was also deliciously creamy. To end on a sweet note, we had the Gulab Jamun tart, which we really enjoyed and savored to the last bits. Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be brining our friends here next time!

Yelp
Service was great. Food was great. Decoration was great. It was just amazing!! This is the best Indian restaurant I've ever been at

Yelp
Disorganized and Unreliable Booked a reservation online because they showed available slots. The next day, I get a call saying, "Sorry, we have to cancel, we're not available." Then why show availability in the first place? Completely disorganized and unreliable service.

Karen V.

Yelp
A wonderful meal at Ssaanjh tonight! The food was delicious, and attractively presented. Our favorites were the kale and roast sweet potato chaat (with so much else in it!), the baingan bartha and the onion naan. The food menu was quite varied - be sure to see both sides of it! The cocktails were great as well. The atmosphere at Ssaanjh is pretty and pleasant, and the service is warm and attentive. We'll be back!

Yelp
We were there within days of their opening. We were on the early side for dinner, and the place was a bit too quiet and empty, but that soon changed to a most pleasant vibe. Ssaanjh is well appointed, well staffed, fairly priced and course after course delivered. I ordered chicken vindaloo, spicy, and it came spiced to perfection... subtle heat building bite after bite. Good report as well on the curry, ordered less spicy but with a similar building warmth. Appetizers, bread and dessert... all excellent. We waited a long time for this addition to the neighborhood. We're delighted to have them here.

Josephine L.

Yelp
We love this place, service is friendly and food is good. My toddler loves the puri so much we had to get two orders for the family. The lamb saag and chicken masala were delicious, the lamb is slightly dry but the saag is good. They have mango lassi, even though it's not on the menu. Will be back to try more dishes!

Rachel B.

Yelp
Really great Indian food! This is the first Indian restaurant in the area that has been really good (I used to resort to going to the suburbs bc all the others have been mediocre at best). The saag paneer and chicken tikka masala were both very tasty (and the latter had very nice white meat chicken). We also got Kale and Sakarkandi Chaat based on another review and it was really crispy and delicious. We got takeout but the atmosphere inside looks quite nice and upscale. Great addition to the area and highly recommend.

John H.

Yelp
I got takeout -- which was excellent, more later -- but worth talking about first is the location itself. This is not your average Indian takeout place; it's a date night place! Soft lighting, upscale decor, fancy cocktails, and a bit more expensive. Wait staff was incredibly nice as I walked in 20 minutes before close asking for takeout. The food: I'm no aficionado but easily best chicken Tikka Masala I've had. There are a bunch more (probably more authentic and even better tasting) dishes on the menu, including lots of veg options, but on this day I kept it simple and did not regret a thing. I will be back for more takeout and for a date with my partner when we have something to celebrate. Give 'em a try!

Cheryl D.

Yelp
This place is such an interesting modern twist on traditional Indian food. The butter chicken is AMAZING (best I have ever had), as was the kale appetizer. Service was also great with very attentive staff. Will definitely go back.

Sarah F.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood- this Indian restaurant is a cut above in both food and decor. Dishes have a progressive flare - the spices were just right and food was beautifully plated. We had lamb kadai and butter chicken, both with very tender meat, delicious sauces and medium spicy as we ordered. Also the Baingan Bharta (roasted eggplant) was a complex dish with far more to it than others we have tried. The restaurant itself is stylish and comfy. Owners are on the floor making sure diners are happy. This is a new favorite!
