"St Kilda roasts its beans in Brooklyn and is known for fruity notes like pear, peach, boysenberry, and plum. The shop also carries beans from several well-known suppliers, including Sey, Passenger, and Little Wolf. St Kilda opened in Midtown in 2016. There is a second location in Chelsea." - Eater Staff

Nice little cafe located below the streets of Hell Kitchen - cosy, nice and warm. Staff is efficient and polite. Free flow water available. Limited seating capacity but works for small groups or individuals looking for a quick coffee fix while wandering through the streets of New York. Reasonably priced and quality is very decent! Superb alternative to Starbucks. Light bites and savory treats also available in a small mini bar section to go with your coffee. Highly recommended!

This review is about sustainability only! 🙂 By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. And of the plastic we make and consume today, over 95% of it does not actually get recycled. Instead, it ends up in landfills and our oceans, gets burned in incinerators, and breaks down into micro plastics that we consume and get sick from. I love that your coffee shop indeed has reusable mugs available, but I am saddened to see that the majority of people enjoying their coffee here are drinking from throwaway plastic cups. I wonder if you could encourage or model more sustainable coffee options for your customers by asking them if they will be enjoying their coffee on the premises. Or perhaps you could put up a sign that encourages or reminds people that they have a reusable mug option available in the house. Or perhaps you could offer a slight discount to those who bring in their own mugs. Communication is key, and I strongly believe that if more people knew they had the option to produce less waste, they would take it. Sadly, we have accepted this current state of plastic consumption as normal, when it absolutely is not. I hope you can help New Yorkers protect this waterfront city by the trash that goes into the city’s water, and waters around the world. Thank you for your consideration! I appreciate your space and I love your coffee, and your service is wonderful. Would love to see some additional sustainability measures and communications to match what is otherwise a great coffee experience.

Google
A haven for good coffee in a neighborhood chock full of Starbucks. No line, easy to get in and out with a filter coffee and to be on your way for the day. Also a few seats if you want to sit inside for a bit. Easy to find on 44th street, sign is at street level and then take the steps down to the entrance. I did not see a wheelchair accessible entrance.

Google
Nice little spot. Thought I’d try a flight but the only advice I got from the barista was “we only have one espresso” and when it came the sparkling water was flat (plus there was only an .oz of it at most). The espresso was very bitter, but the Columbia & Rwandan brewed coffees were delicious. If you offer flights it’s worth putting the effort in to make the experience worth the $.

There are many places in NYC where you can get good coffee, etc. There are few places where you feel welcome. This is one of the places where you feel welcome and get quality.

Google
Hidden bellow the streets of New York, St Kilda has some KILLER coffee. I got the dirty chai and my dad got a double shot latte. The coffee they’re using is fresh and superb. More than anything else however, the atmosphere is so fun. Walking down the steps out of the city and into this cafe is, simply put: magical.

Google
This is my problem with Coffee in America in the New York in general. The greediness is terrible. The product is terrible. They didn’t even fill the cup and it was 7$ a hot black coffee ?

Yelp
I don't think I've ever left a review for a coffee shop, but my coffee was so good, I felt like I had to. I had a 12oz flat white with oat milk and it was brewed with Ike pack of sugar in the raw. Our barista (I'm sad I didn't catch their name!) was very charming and cool- I will literally daydream about this coffee

Irene S.

Yelp
Needed a bit a pick-me-up after a long day watching a show and strolling in the city! Service was fast. This happened to be on the way. Gave the iced cortado with oatmilk a try. Taste was good. For the price, wished there's a bit more drink to it. Finished it instantly. If I'm in the area, would be willing to give it another try!

Sophia C.

Yelp
I was happy to find this spot nearby! I grabbed a chocolate croissant and hot latte. Service was quick & great. FYI as much as I was craving a vanilla latte, they do not carry any flavored syrups!

Michael C.

Yelp
Really vibey spot! Plenty of seating, with some outside as well, so definitely a good place to sit down and enjoy your coffee. I went on a weekday morning, and it was pretty empty, so service was also really fast. I got a cortado, and I just don't think the roast was really up my alley. Strong on the fruity side, but certainly a well made drink. Good ratio of milk, good coffee notes, and overall pretty enjoyable, but just a bit too fruity/sour for me. Would definitely recommend to at least give a try!

Annette S.

Yelp
Horrible hot cocoa.. There was a terrible after-taste before even swallowing it. My mother and I both agreed that something was wrong with it! I barely drank it, asked for a refund and the barista gave me a hard time! Horrible service which makes this place a not spot to stop for a coffee, tea, and especially a hot cocoa!!!!! Keep walking past and find a commercialized Starbucks for better cocoa and way better service! Ian assisted us and made the most disgusting drink ever!!!!

Nicole H.

Yelp
The perfect little coffee shop right outside of our hotel, you bet we hit this place hard while we visited NYC. Friendly service and well made cappuccino's. Thanks for helping us get through our vacation!

Steven E.

Yelp
This ended up a big bright spot in the nighttime. Well, er, morning, oh, you know! In all the visits to NYC over the years, I've never truly mastered the lines that separate. One woman told us we were standing in Times Square, her husband argued it was the theater district and my nephew called it Hell's Kitchen. This is on 44th street between 8th and 9th. lol I like that you walk down a flight to get here. It's a pretty hip place and a bit different than the Seattle based chain. Space is limited but there's a bench out front if you don't mind the cold. Brrrrrrrr! All I can say is what a unique shoppe. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. I enjoyed the music. My daughter says it's Indy music. It was nice. They will gladly bag up any of their blends for you to brew at home. Some are everyday staples, some are strange sounding concoctions and they have come up with some crazy concoctions. Try the cookies. They're great too! The best part was the barista and her buddy. Super friendly and funny. No attitude, no pressure. She said she was here all day so, really, I can take my time. My daughter isn't so patient and ordered me up a Flat White with Oat Milk. Trust me, dad, this is you. It was pretty damn good. The next day I had a Cold Brew (oat milk) that rocked. When you become ancient years old, lactose doesn't play nice so it's Oat milk. Btw, they don't do soy. In case you needed that info. 01/24

Yelp
Was in NY for a quick work trip & stayed at the Intercontinental. St Kilda was a just a few steps away. Great lil' coffee spot. Good coffee and quality pastries. It's below ground level, so you might miss it walking by.

Mina P.

Yelp
This coffee shop was small, but is worth checking out. I ordered the Americano, almond croissant, and cranberry scone. The cranberry was good, but i was in love with their almond croissant. It was flaky and the almond paste inside was sweet (not too sweet) and the almond topped Gabe the croissant an extra crunch. The coffee was smooth and delicious too. I would recommend checking out this spot, but maybe take it to go since seats are limited.

Neleh H.

Yelp
Very Good coffee & friendly service, small seating area inside & 1 outside bench. Got some work done on laptop while chilling in here- a little escape from the hustle & bustle of outside. Do yourself a favor & come here instead of drinking crappy chain store coffee.

Jenny W.

Yelp
My matcha latte had a really odd taste to it, and my boyfriend noted his coffee did as well. Also it was incredibly expensive at $7. The only saving grace was that our banana muffin was good.

Shonna B.

Yelp
Nice and quaint coffee shop in Times Square! The oat milk latte served hot is a must!

Kristen T.

Yelp
March 2023: Love this specialty coffeeshop. I was intrigued by their logo and name. They definitely care about their aesthetics. The location itself is somewhat hidden as it's located down a flight of stairs. The shop is quite small and a bit loud. Only one barista was working that day, however he was hard at work, fulfilling orders promptly as a line of tourists followed through. Their coffee beans are super smooth: I ordered my usual Americano black and it was not bitter at all. Highly recommend to those who enjoy a nice cup of coffee and people watching. I ordered a chili flavored pastry as well- although it was dry, it did have a nice flavor. Several seats/tables inside. I find this one better than the downtown location. There's also window seating and outdoor benches. Wifi is available which is good for working along with some outlets. Unfortunately no bathroom! Accepts cash, card and Applepay. No bathroom. Small shop. Indoor/outdoor and takeout available. Drink up!

Roy K.

Yelp
Great americano and fast. Way better than the big-mug shops. If I lived in NYC, this would be my local coffee shop

Sallie D.

Yelp
Small cafe tucked away downstairs that's very easy to miss. I consider these guys the best "serious coffee" in the neighborhood. If you're looking for good coffee (vs. say, coffee favored cup of seasonal sugar syrup), this is your happy place. I really liked the filtered coffee made with Sey beans - which I had never tried before. I broke my no caffeine in the PM rule for it and I have no regrets. Might pick up some beans here next time. P.S. coffee here is comparable or *cheaper* than other similar quality places in NYC. Noticed a large number of reviews from tourists down voting for price (probably because they only visited this one place due to proximity to hotel) and just thought I'd chime in as a New Yorker.

Seth B.

Yelp
Decent coffee shop in the basement level making legit cappuccinos from fresh roasts. One of the best in Hell's Kitchen area. Okay to ask to seat at any open chair.

Kerrie D.

Yelp
I had already killed some time at a cafe down the street. I was headed to Birdland and once I got there, realized I needed to kill some more time...what to do? Literally, cross the street and walk down into St Kilda Coffee! Super nice server behind the counter! Nice coffee options, with a small being pretty small, which really worked out for me as I had already been drinking coffee for the last two hours! Also, a small but excellent selection of vegan baked goods. I chose a tahini, chocolate chip cookie and it was truly fantastic, still thinking about it this morning! This is a small space, but I was lucky enough to find a seat to kill some more time at St Kilda's

Taylor T.

Yelp
There's nothing like hip NYC coffee, and St. Kilda fits the bill. This spot was in walking distance from the Westin, so I stopped by for some caffeine and fell in love with this unique little spot. It's also perfect that it's away from most of the hustle & bustle of Times Square, which is a refreshing change of scenery if you're staying nearby in a hotel. A walk-down storefront with just enough space to move around or sit and sip in a quiet corner. There seemed to be little foot traffic on a weekend morning while we waited for our coffee, so we were in and out fairly quickly. Grabbed an Americana and cappucino, both were delicious and perfectly pulled. I was so obsessed with their design and merch, so I grabbed one of their bags and shirts. Definitely a great spot to stop by if you're in the area in need of real (good) coffee.

Lanny B.

Yelp
Hip coffee spot just off Times Sq -- hard to believe that even exists!! But St Kilda is legit in their beans and their barista skills. Also sell some fascinating beans by the bag.

Lindsay V.

Yelp
I got a vanilla oat milk latte and it was the best I've ever had. I'm really annoyed that I can't be a regular here, because I'll be dreaming of that coffee. I'll be making it a point to stay somewhere close to St. Kilda whenever I'm in NYC, that's for damn sure.

CK M.

Yelp
A tiny space but quiet. Excellent coffee, friendly staff. A nice place to sit and catch up on email.

David H.

Yelp
solid coffee near times square. cool little shop in a basement. the espresso I tried was floral and pretty tasty, a touch bitter in the drink but still solid. also had a pumpkin chai cookie which was delicious

Kelsey C.

Yelp
Oh what a lovely place to sit. They're right off Times Square, but I think the subtler garden-level location keeps them from being swamped with tourists. They make a lovely cappuccino, and the people are super approachable and cool. Duck inside to do some work or just to escape the noise.

Rye R.

Yelp
The oat milk vanilla latte was one of the best I've ever had, I got a cute tote bag from here that's super durable and have been using for everyday. Very nice service and a cool vibe.

Ronald K.

Yelp
Jump off the NY Waterways theater bus line and head down the basement stairs for the best coffee in the Theater District. Staff is refreshingly friendly and kind; though thoroughly Aussie in its roots, the place has an old-school NYC vibe.

Brett N.

Yelp
Why 4 stars? Because my experience was brief but I got what I needed. --- --- --- I was staying at the nearby Westin and, of course, needed coffee like I need oxygen. St Kilda appeared to have the best reviews, so off I went. It was interesting to take stairs down to the shop, under the street level. We're not in Houston anymore. I opted for a pour over and asked for the beans with the least amount of fruit notes. He said they are all pretty light but the Honduran would be my best bet. I ended up liking it more than I thought - good pick, hipster barista guy! As he took a few minutes to make the drink, I sat around wondering how a tiny coffee shop survives in a place like Manhattan. Sure, it's a small place. But rent is no-doubt still way more than my mortgage. And sure, my $7.25 before tip pour over is expensive for coffee, but how much of a profit are they pulling in on a cup? Either way, my coffee was solid and caffeine was a-plenty within it. Good luck, St Kilda on all of your future endeavors.

Mark P.

Yelp
Dashed in for a quick Espresso to make sure I was awake and alert for the Broadway show I was going to that night. Barista was friendly and nice and the coffee was great. Funky atmosphere and a lively group of folks hanging out there. Price was good and the Espresso was a lot closer to a double than a regular.

Michelle T.

Yelp
Probably one of the best mochas I've ever had! Super smooth and not too rich! Service was also quick

Amira I.

Yelp
Craving coffee while staying at Intercontinental and this spot is a great place that you may miss while walking by since it's location is a walk down off the street. Love to support local above all franchise coffee shops. Chill little local spot with mellow music vibes on a Sunday morning in the city. Been a while to sit down in a coffee shop to have coffee ina mug and so cute yellow cup with signature heart design on top! When you order they ask to go or to stay. If you stay they do ask for your vaccine card wish is good! There is also a sign which I read and provided before paying without even needing to be really asked. And looks like pastries they have croissants and muffin pastries. Didn't try any though so can't comment on that. They also have some retail bags of coffee and merch. Hopefully to be back on my next stay! Definitely a must try.

Sam T.

Yelp
The amount of Aussie outcroppings popping up around NYC is awesome! They definitely brew a good cuppa. This place just screams HIP. I love the large windows framed by swaying fronds of green pothos and ivy. The amount of natural sunlight is perfect and really adds to the warm ambience. I also love their branding and even bought a tote from them. They use little Wolf and SEY, both high quality roasters. The espresso is on the strong side, with a heavy hint of brightness. The cappuccino was good. Service was good and fast as well. Witnessed quite a few regulars drop in just for a to-go cup of joe on the way to work. The croissants -- plain and chocolate -- were also flaky and consistent. I would love studying or doing work or just catching up with a friend if I lived here.

Linda F.

Yelp
Great local coffee shop which I love to support. Coffee and latte were excellent. Also had a good bakery item. Service was friendly and quick

Mary D.

Yelp
We are staying at the Intercontinental and found this place quite by accident. You would miss it if you didn't see the small "coffee" sign from the street. The latte was brewed just right but the sizing seems off re the cup sizes. The "large" wasn't what I would consider large at all. As a result prices are a but high. Coffee is smooth and the ambiance inviting. It's exactly what I would expect to find re a small coffee house in NYC.

Tj M.

Yelp
I visited this place this morning and will be my new coffee shop! Amazing coffee and try the cream cheese everything croissant. I got two!

Christopher K.

Yelp
May be the best coffee in the city. Single origin coffee. Superb! Never disappointed. I guess this is why they say Australia has the best coffee the world over. Starbucks doesn't dominate the marketplace there like it does in less educated places ..... hmmmm...

Danny A.

Yelp
I normally drink my coffee with half and half. However, the americano was brewed to perfection and made for the perfect cup of coffee with milk instead. The coffee at St Kilda was the highlight of my morning, and I enjoyed every moment at this shop.

Alden G.

Yelp
Product is good, sometimes great. Service and wait time is not. Note that unless you're into specialty coffee (single origin coffee in particular) there's not going to be much on offer for you here. There's nothing wrong with a narrow focus, but just know that's what to expect. I wouldn't come here if I was in a hurry, and since my last experience I haven't wanted to come back because of how rude the barista was and how long I had to wait for one shot of espresso, despite being the only one in the shop. The space is small, typical for a café of this size. Wouldn't be comfortable to spend a lot of time here.

Shivani L.

Yelp
The shop, matcha, snacks, and service here were all very solid. I actually think it is one of my favorite matcha lattes in the city. My only issue is that it was 8 bucks for a small lol..which is pretty rough even for New York. I'd still recommend stopping by if you are in the area.

Love MyLinh T.

Yelp
Good that they had oat milk compared to all the other spots, but there are no flavored syrups. I settled for a Mocha instead of a vanilla oat milk latte. All was good until I asked for a new lid, especially with Covid considerations, but mostly because the stack had dust and coffee drips on the each one. The barista was not so friendly anymore and i tried to catch the 2 lids from his irritation and dropped one while holding onto one by the very edge. It's a tiny underground shop with about 3 sitting spots per 6ft Covid Courtesy. Not the best coffee, also not the best service after the fact.

Sean T.

Yelp
I love the coffee here, whatever it is it's a really nicely roasted product and the baristas do a nice job with it. Limited food in this cool basement shop, but with coffee this good, no problem!

James L.

Yelp
While there was a slight delay during the morning rush, the barista still managed to make the perfect balance of espresso, milk, and foam with the ideal temperature. Overall, it was definitely worth the wait!

Sue A.

Yelp
I ordered a hot chai latte with almond milk. It had just the right amount of sweetness with a nice spicy flavor. The almond milk was frothy and perfect. I enjoyed the chai tea and will definitely go back when I'm in the area.

Dee D.

Yelp
This is my happy place when I visit New York! The baristas were always very friendly, especially Jorge! Everything was deliciously bf especially the vegan tahini cookies. I can't wait to go back.

Jaime L.

Yelp
So nice to be able to walk into a nearby coffee place and to get an amazing cortado. Staff was ok. Coffee delicious. Will return.

Bo P.

Yelp
Awesome little place, great coffee shop of the beaten path. Coffee was great and atmosphere cool. Worth a visit if you are in the area and want a good coffee.

Serim A.

Yelp
I stopped by here twice while staying at a nearby hotel. My Americano with a splash of milk was pure heaven. I loved the fresh soury taste. I wish I got a chance to ask the owner what kind of coffee bean it was! Oat milk latte the next day was good too but definitely pricey because of the extra charge on alternative milk. TLDR: great quality coffee if you have the money

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Coffee was fine. Got a latte. Service was good. Place is small, not a great sit down but more of a grab and go type of place.

Tim S.

Yelp
best hot chai latte i've ever had. went back every day i was in town and i'll. e back next trip

Adam S.

Yelp
Just west of Times Square, and right next to the A/C/E train on 44th near 8th Ave, this quaint coffeeshop attracts a clientele of both locals and tourists alike. With local roasters and various alternative milks (including oat!), it will keep the non-coffee-drinkers and the espresso needs of the hipster totally happy. Located in the basement of a tenement building, the cafe has a small number of tables and free wifi, and pastries from various local bakeries, including cookies from Ovenly, and donuts from Underwest (only on Wednesdays and Saturdays last time I checked). Definitely a worthwhile stop for your coffee fix in Hell's Kitchen and, as almost every other coffeeshop in NYC, be sure to pick up a punch card if (and when!) you come often.

Keith R.

Yelp
Great coffee and pastries The baristas there are younger than the photo of Ian Curtis by the register and--for the lucky among us--time just keeps marching on
