"The seemingly expanding food hall, specializing in viral food hits like Korean corndogs and croffles, is opening its latest venture on St. Mark’s Place. The chain Afternoon, first launched in New York back in April of this year and is already onto its fifth location." - Emma Orlow

Excellent hotel and service. Went in with low expectations, just wanting to save money on my trip. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how clean it was and how good the service was. Receptionist was nice. All I can say is it would be better if the shower was hotter, and if the blankets were less thin. Otherwise, this hotel really has an amazing price and is in a great location. I would definitely love to come back one day. Very satisfied.

Stayed here for 5 nights in April. Thought it was an excellent deal! The amenities are basically non-existent, but it’s half the price (or less) than all of the other hotels in the area, so it is to be expected. Everything about the place was on the older side (including the bedding, carpets, showers), but i did not think it was a problem. Cleanliness was passable - rooms were made every day. Notices some staining on the box spring and mattress. The staff were amazing and helpful - We had an issue with the toilet flushing and we were switched to another room without any troubles! Rooms are very small, but you won’t be spending much time in them considering how PERFECT the location is. It really can’t be beat, it’s within a 3 minute walk of green and yellow lines, and about 7 minute walk to orange and grey. Couldn’t ask for a better neighbourhood, east village is vibrant and we felt safe the entire time. Also, We couldn’t hear any noise from the street or restaurant below from our room on the 3rd floor. I would recommend this hotel to any ‘budget traveler’ who is used to simple, older accommodations. If you are used to chain hotels, you might not find St. Marks very comfortable.

I did 2 nights; have heard it's hit or miss. Honestly the location was fantastic, was cash only, sold a surfboard for the approx amount beforehand. Easy check in, didn't let me in early but check-in time was 2pm, not horrible. The streets were loud all night, but i setup a noise machine and ear plugs and honestly not bad - 24hr CVS across the street, had a small cold so this was clutch for me in middle of night. The only real con is the bedding was pretty stained up - might want to consider bringing a top of your own if your sensitive. Location was awesome. I'd try it again!

Google
No-frills for a fair price and right in the heart of the city (close to the metro, bars, restaurants). Accomodations are very basic but we personally had no issues with cleanliness or quality of the room. Also tastes vary but I personally found the outdated decor kind of charming... This place has character which feels fitting for a visit to this city. It is a shame that they're cash only but as long as you come prepared for this and ask for receipt there should be no issue. All-in-all, a solid spot! Also YES the pizzeria downstairs is good. 👌

We checked in to the St. Mark May 2nd and checked out May 7th. The attraction of the St. Mark is the low price and the location. Our rate was $150 per night. Cash. No checks. No credit cards. The neighborhood is fun and funky. Rays, the deli on the corner, is terrific. There is a subway station near by. The superlatives end there. It's a 4 story walk up that takes you to a tiny room. The beds are subpar, sheets and pillows even less so. Towels may be suitable for washing your car. The bathroom looked recently updated. Someone forgot to put soap caddies in the shower. You needed to reach out to the vanity to grab them and put them back. Hot waster to the sink was sometimes nearly impossible to get. The TV is from the 80's and we could only get one station. The St. Mark appears safe but there is no lock on the front door. We were busy while we were in NY. Going back to the hotel was not something we looked forward to however.

We booked this place with the intention of never really being there except to sleep, and that's precisely what we did. Therefore, it was great! We would be out and about in the city all day, then be able to take the subway to within walking distance of the hotel at the end of the day. Pros: they make your bed each day, they are very kind and helpful, they were willing to try to get me a room on the lowest level (but it turned out they were booked), we went in the winter and it was freezing cold outside but the tiny floor heater heated the space VERY well (we were sweating at some points!), no bugs, great location, hot showers. The beds are very firm, but we prefer that (I know some do not). At the end of each day, when we got back to our room after walking 8-10 miles all over the city, we would crash and sleep very well all night. Cons: no elevator, the stairs are very steep and narrow, the place is outdated in decor (this could be spun as a positive if you love feeling and seeing the history from the building). There was no window view from our room, which was slightly disappointing. The TV appears to only have bunny-ear antenna channels from the 80s (but who cares, we were just there to sleep). We were NOT there in the summer, but I can imagine it would get pretty hot during that time of year. Bottom line: If you are looking for an affordable, clean, and safe place to sleep, this is your place. NOTE: They only take cash.

Google
For a two stars hotel, the hotel is good, my room was very small and only stairs. Room was clean, but there was a leak in The bathroom was never fixed. Location is excellent , not much service since we never needed.

Cash only. Seems like this place is hit or miss. We had a decent stay. The water is temperamental but works. Rooms are cold during winter but have space heater. No parking. Staff was very nice about holding our luggage before and after checking in. But beds were VERY uncomfortable after a few days :( shower head was (inner city) strong enough.

Yelp
Some kind of scam is going on here. You can't reserve online or over the phone yet they email you prices and availability. I called back and they said I would need to book in person. How when I'm coming in from out of town. This process is ridiculous.

Heather B.

Yelp
I'm not sure what kind a scam is going on here, but My son who is 21 made reservation at this place, and he drives 8 hours with his pregnant girlfriend and 2 other friends for the weekend in NYC and he is turned away because not all people in his party are 21. NO were on the website does it say all parties for guest staying at the hotel need to be 21. THIS IS COPIED DIRECTLY FROM WEBSITE: Minimum Age to check in 21. Now its winter time, and they have no where to go because most of the hotels they called were booked, and now my son and his pregnant girlfriend are walking around NYC in the winter with no where to go. I will be contacting the BBB of NYC that ridiculous. An Its cash only. What kinda operation are they running out of this hotel.

Crystal C.

Yelp
I want to give this place more stars because it's cheap, in a good area, has nearby reasonable parking, decently comfortable.. but the two cockroaches we found in the room took my two stars. Y'all need to do something about that

Lauren A.

Yelp
Sketchy establishment and not safe for solo women, or maybe any females at all. Although the hotel is affordable and in a fun neighborhood, this place only takes cash for a reason. They do not care about their guests, their guests' visitors, or anyone in between. Don't trust the towel boy to report anything he thinks may be inappropriate. Don't trust anyone. Even if you have some sort of traumatic life experience at this hotel, the front desk is not interested in chatting. Even decades later. I know bc I went there years later and recently. It was scary how much nothing has changed.

Yelp
For the amount that you are paying for and compared to other hotels in Manhattan, this hotel is a bargain. While its not a fancy hotel, and it doesn't have a mini bar or a coffee maker, It does have nice clean beds, a small bathroom, and an AC which was good enough for us. Since my friend and I weren't planning on spending much time at the hotel (mainly just shower and sleep), this place was a really good location to stay in. It's also good for anyone on a budget. I didn't experience anything sketchy throughout our two night stay. Mainly we would leave at 6am and not come home until midnight or later. But, I will make a note that the walls are in fact paper thin. I didn't get much sleep due to the noise of cars honking outside (even at 3 in the morning). Also as a previous yelper said, the shower water temperature tends to fluctuate (i found that if you put it on hot, then cold then slowly adjust it near hot again it gives you a warm water temperature). Also this place only takes cash - so make sure you only have cash on your upon arriving. But other than that this is a good location since its super close to the subway station and they have a CVS, Walgreens, Starbucks, and dunkin donuts near by in case people are hungry and want a quick bite before going on your adventure. Also, washington square park is 10 min away in case you want to go there.

Yelp
This place is still open??? Worst hotel I've ever stayed in in many years of traveling. It was at least 6 years ago but I'm sure the low scores all still hold true. (I thought I'd done a review of this place but it must have been Trip Advisor where I remember a review of a mouse getting to people's candy bars). Tiny old room, hot water that doesn't stay hot, scary front desk esp. late at night with some shirtless guy yelling at the clerk. Front door stayed open all the time to the grunge of St. Mark's. Yes it's convenient but no, never ever again.

Tim B.

Yelp
You get what you pay for with St. Marks. The argument for staying here is that the location is great and that you'll only need the room for sleeping and showering. True. Unfortunately sleeping and showering are two of the worst experiences at St. Marks. The beds are uncomfortable and the shower temperature issue mentioned in other reviews is very real. If you manage to find the balance of hot and cold water, you'll need to shampoo and rinse immediately because that moment will only last a few seconds. Wash your parts that are prone to body odor and wait til your trip is over to experience your home shower again.

Yelp
Friend Stayed at this place and I had a chance to visit him. Place is a no frills, no luxury, not much amenities. Just a place with a clean bed and shower. The rooms are okay sized, but its New York sized, small and it gets the job done. Okay hotel for when you need a place to crash and your friends who live in the city are horrible New Yorkers who don't like people crashing at their place or don't want friends to crash at their place cause the apartment is already small and tight. Not sure what the price was, but my friend said it was affordable for New York. While walking out, Jimmy McMillan, founder of the Rent is Too Damn High Party was parked right outside the hotel's entrance. I totally agree with him about the rent being high. Not sure what his business was parking in front of the St. Marks hotel since it was pretty affordable, but he drove off shorty after snagging a picture. Rent is too damn high!

Yelp
This place is not bad as people say. It's a small cozy room. I've been to worst with dirty towels and sheets. This is not bad at all. This hotel is based at the best location of Manhattan New York. You go downstairs and your at all restaurants and bars. Good atmosphere!!! The receptionist guys are all friendly to. I always come here when I'm here for business or pleasure.

Tina P.

Yelp
This is not a 5-star hotel as far as the standard hotel rating system goes, but for the price, location and convenience it deserves 5 stars. If you want fancy ass hotel amenities and whatnot, you have to pay for them. And this hotel does not charge absurdly high nightly rates so you won't get fancy shit here. Hopefully you don't need Captain Obvious to tell you this and you've already figured it out on your own. The good: Price Location Communication w staff Pizza place that serves great pastries and coffee right outside The no-shit-Sherlock-not-fancy stuff that might be interpreted as 'bad' by stupid people who have no common sense: Old/outdated building Cash only Small bathrooms/showers (that are very clean) Old squeaky beds (take your loud group sex party elsewhere I guess) Street noise at night (duh it's NYC people) Stairs (apparently there's an elevator but you might have to, you know, use your legs if you have no patience and can't wait) Close to NYU so that means a lot of pretentious students who are sooooo cool because their parents foot the bill for them to pretend to be New Yorkers for awhile.

Lizette C.

Yelp
The rooms are small but it's all we needed. We had a perfect stay there and the guy at the desk was very nice. They don't have a fridge in room so he brought us ice to keep our items chilled. We had a great view and the location is perfect. Will definitely be staying there again. It's CASH only.

Ana M.

Yelp
*** DO NOT STAY HERE*** - extremely unsafe - homeless people have broken in while I was here - rude and unresponsive front desk - residents are extremely loud and smoke all around the hotel - shower temperature fluctuates with hot to cold water Do not stay here. The first night we came, a homeless man had broken in and was harassing us as we were trying to get to our hotel room (he was actually in the building and can't believe he was even able to get in and linger). The ceilings are extremely thin, as well. We could barely sleep with people above us dropping things and screaming as they stayed up all night (until 5am). The next night, we then were repeatedly woken up by the heaters as they are extremely outdated, safe, and unpredictable in regards to when they turn on and what "drumming" sounds they make. Lastly, anytime we asked the front desk to address any of these issues, they were indifferent and did absolutely nothing about it.

Parris J.

Yelp
I was in NYC for my birthday last month. My now fiance booked this hotel because of the price and reviews. Don't expect a fancy hotel because this is a place to lay your head, use the restroom, shower and leave. We weren't focused on the room because we just wanted to tour and check out what NYC had to offer. I apologize for forgetting one of the front desk members name but he was very helpful with making us feel comfortable and directing us in the direction. This location is in a great location in downtown Manhattan.

Gare W.

Yelp
We stayed here for several nights. First let me say that the staff was very nice and willing to help in any way. It was very clean. No complaints in how well kept this place is. The only complaints I would have is that the hot water is fickle. You can either have just really hot water or really cold water, you decide. Also, that the walls are paper thin. You can hear other people coming and going through out the night and hear conversations going on in the next room. We were on the first floor so anyone who came in to go upstairs you heard. Being a lite sleeper this woke me up everytime. Also, the noise coming from the street. I know you are in the city but it seemed to me like all the folks standing outside the window were actually inside the room. If you are heavy sleeper and need a nice place to stay I highly suggest this place. The location is great!

Lari U.

Yelp
The place is not good, front desk is rude and they turn off warm water. Sad when people have the chance to create a good experience but they don't care about it.

Tonya M.

Yelp
Stayed over Labor Day weekend. Loved it. Cute, classic hotel. Clean, with helpful staff. Great pizza down stairs. Metro station is close by. Don't forget they're cash only and that it's in a popular area with lots to do so there's some noise that comes with that. I'll definitely stay at St Marks again.

Ro R.

Yelp
When my friend and I was planning to visit NY 7 years ago - this native New Yorker that I knew suggested this place for us. He said St Marks is a great area and this would be a great choice for me. I totally trusted him so I noted this Hotel. When he was in the area, he decided to come and check out the place for me. He called me right after and told me to scratch it out. He said this hotel is really shady - since it has the following: -rents room by the hour -bullet proof windows -sketchy people that stays here -dirtiness -prostitutes He apologized to me saying he didn't expect it to be so tacky! I am so glad he was kind enough to check it out for me without me even asking. Saved me from some horrific nights!

Sam A.

Yelp
DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL. I walked in and was told I need to pay cash and was fooled into signing a sheet that said "no refunds". What hotel makes you pay cash? I walked into the room and it was TERRIBLE. There's only window unit air, and the furniture is old. The bed was HARD!! And the linens looked aged and dirty. After brushing my teeth and assessing the room I decided that I did not feel safe or comfortable in this room. I went downstairs and told the front desk man that I'd like a refund because this room was not what I expected and I do not feel safe. He rejected my refund due to me "using the room". I did NOT sleep or get into the bed. I was unable to get a refund and because I paid in cash, there is nothing I can do. Please do not get tricked into this like I did. I will be calling the NYC business bureau about this establishment.

Larry J.

Yelp
I gave the Saint Marks 5 stars based on price & location even though I'd consider it a 2 or 3 star hotel. The Saint Marks is a WONDERFUL HOTEL! The location is fantastic and you can't beat the rates. I have stayed in crappier hotels in New York for not much less money. You have to be a total uptight snob to be bothered by the hourly rates. There is nothing wrong with that. There is so much to see and do in New York so a fancy/swanky hotel room is useless. Who would sit in a hotel room most of the day in New York? I found the rooms to be very clean, beds were very comfortable. What more would you want in a cheap hotel? Sure the staff is rude but isn't that what New York is famous for? I travel a lot throughout the US, Europe and Asia. New York is a very expensive city and I am glad there is a centrally located hotel that is affordable. I've seen too much gentrification in major US cities. I've seen too much of that here in San Francisco where I live as well as in Chicago. The yuppies have sterilized too many once cool neighborhoods with their lame over-priced wine bars, health clubs, vegan cafes and boutiques. It's nice to see a hold out of old New York. Not everyone can afford to stay at the Waldorf Astoria or even the W. It's nice to see a place where ordinary folks can be decadent and hedonistic and have their affairs. ;) /rant over :)

Nick O.

Yelp
Had a great stay at the St. Marks Hotel. The staff were friendly and attentive, the room I stayed in was small, but clean, and I really liked it's location. The only thing I did not like about the room was that the shower would go from hot to cold without warning, but other than that I enjoyed my stay.

Demetria B.

Yelp
I guess after its all said and done my stay wasn't to bad.. I received a room on the third floor facing the street which was all right to me because who wants the stare at a brick wall the whole time!! Lol Got up to my room dropped my bags and took it easy for the rest of the day.. My room was fit for one person which worked out fine with me because it was only myself along with one suitcase and a backpack so I definitely had enough space to move around if need be.. The TV however was a small little thing in mice service came in kind a static and a lot of my channels so I wasn't able to watch a certain number of stations.. I bathroom was a nice size however I was not provided any wash cloths, only big towels and hand towels ((thank God for loofahs)) I'm not for sure of this hotel is a smoking hotel but as I did leave the hotel a time or two I did smell the distinct smell of marijuana throughout the second floor which bothered me since I am pregnant.. I guess another thing that bothered me is this hotel not having an elevator so you would have to carry your luggage up to whatever floor your place on.. ((freaking sucks)) thank God I was only on floor number three.. So after it's all said and done I guess this place isn't bad it probably wouldn't be my first choice to book again but the rating was reasonable and I guess my room wasn't so bad..

Adam K.

Yelp
For the price, this place is absolutely not worth it. We paid $150 for a night and got a 10' x 6' room that was on the third floor. Now I'm really not a finicky person, I've traveled the world quite a bit and have stayed in hundreds of hotels. This place is really not that clean, the bed is made of felt, and to get to the third floor it is quite the exercise. I'll post pics of the bathroom, which was insanely small, smelled like a swimming pool, and I was genuinely scared I was going to catch a disease. Cash only, which is annoying because the ATM has a $200 maximum per day. We were going to stay 2 night, decided to stay one and paid $119 at the Hilton. What a difference, relief. This place is worth $80 per night. Anything more, go somewhere else.

Jeremy A.

Yelp
This place isn't the nicest hotel you will stay in but it definitely serves its purpose. Cash only is a bit of a pain in the ass and they make you pay up front. Once we got that out of the way we were pleasantly surprised to have a clean room with our own bathroom. The location cant be beat if you're going to be having an active trip in the city and just need a place to crash. For the money and location, Id definitely recommend this place.

Jordan N.

Yelp
It is an okay hotel that accepts cash only. Pay in cash and expect only the basic things. Comparing with the Belnord, the beds here are better, but the rooms are smaller. The 2 twin bed rooms are pretty comfy (at least the ones I was in), and the bathrooms, while small, had a good layout. By comparison, the room with a double bed was less attractive. Plenty of 24 hours establishments nearby in East Village. There's three Starbucks close by. And a cheap convenience store nearby that's open 24 hours on 2nd Avenue. $110 and up.

Diana B.

Yelp
The property was clean and very cozy. It was perfect to come back to after a full day of sightseeing. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was amazing next to the subway and above Ray's Pizza & bagels Café which my family and I had breakfast in every morning.

Daniel G.

Yelp
What happened, this place was so good a few years ago but now.....wow!! Like just horrible customer service and the rooms were gross. Seriously left over food in the trash and bathroom smelled. This hotel was so easy to go to literally 4 years ago but I guess times have changed. I;ll check in on you guys again in a little but wow....not what you guys use to be at all smh.

Chloe L.

Yelp
So I stayed here with family for a short trip based on reviews as well as the very cheap price point. People said it was clean, decent and in a good location. I can say only one of those is true. Yes, the location for this hotel is great. You're a 5 minute walk from two different subway stops that will take you almost anywhere in the city. You have an amazing pizza place underneath you that has some of the best pizza and cheesecake I've ever had. But this hotel is in no way decent. Firstly they don't accept credit cards and are cash only like many people have said. We made a reservation over the phone a week and a half prior and called a few times to confirm, which was honored upon arrival. They even listened to our request for a lower level room since there's no elevator. The person at the front desk was okay. Not overly friendly, gave some mediocre dining advice. But, he did his job. So far we thought we were off to a good start. And then we got to the room... The hotel itself is very old and it shows. Upon walking into the room, the first thing we saw was torn up and stained carpets, scuffed paint and old worn out furniture. We weren't expecting much since this is a bit of a budget hotel and we knew it was older. However this place is in desperate need of renovations. The bathroom had the toilet facing the wall so you had to sit on it sideways since your legs wouldn't fit normally. The sink only provided cold water, no warm. The shower was literally a joke and would either scold you with hot water or ice cold water, there was no in between. So needless to say we all ended up not using the shower the second day. Cleanliness is an issue here as well. Upon arrival there was hair on the toilet, dark pubic looking hair in the shower drain and hair on the bedding and pillowcases. It felt grimy and dirty, but thankfully there were no bedbugs or roaches that we saw. The beds are rock solid so after a long day of walking around the city, expect to wake up more sore than you were before sleeping. The room was also surprisingly warm to the point where we had to open the windows, which surprise, are old and don't really open. All in all this hotel is really just a 1 star, but it gets 2 for the great location and affordable pricing ($175 a night taxes in). My advice would be to spend a little bit more and stay in a nicer hotel, or even look at a hostel. Because honestly, the St. Marks hotel made me look forward to leaving more than anything.

Kelly D.

Yelp
Cockroach infestation! Don't stay here. Was here for four hours and wouldn't refund our money. Scam!!

Avinash B.

Yelp
Economical FOR New York i guess, booked through expedia $200/night (including taxes) a 2queen bed room for 3, no elevator and cramped....

Daniel R.

Yelp
Probably the lowest priced hotel in Manhattan in an amazing location--right in the heart of the Village. It's definitely a hole in the wall sort of place--a ton of small rooms in a old building. The rooms are very small, but clean. No elevator, so if you don't like stairs try to get a room on the first floor if possible. Obviously this sort of hotel won't be on the same level as a Hilton or even a Holiday Inn--think about the same level as a Motel 6. It's cash only. They do have an ATM if you don't have cash. Some of the reviews said there were prostitutes and other sketchy elements here. I didn't see anything like that. I never felt unsafe. Overall, it was pretty nice for the price.

Jean H.

Yelp
-small, ity bity, tiny, puny, cramped, little, micro rooms -clean -no elevator -great location ~~~~~~~~~~~most importantly~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ yes, it does have hourly rates *wink wink*

Barbara B.

Yelp
[I'm copying my Trip Advisor review since I'm too lazy to write a new one - but thought this hotel deserved a bump since it's not SO bad.] Booked this hotel on the recommendation of a friend who said it was good "if we just needed a place to sleep and shower." She was 100% spot on. This hotel is one step up from a hostel - beds, toilet, shower. Not a place to luxuriate and relax but you can dump your stuff and get some sleep. And please - you're in NYC. Who's hanging out in the lobby of the hotel? Other guests were primarily European, 25-48 yrs old. We did NOT see any hookers. Or johns. Or pimps. I would not have my mother, husband, kids, or boss stay here. It's definitely a 'party weekend' hotel because of the quality of the room. Price: Our total price for one night was $155 for 2 double beds, probably the cheapest rate you will find in Manhattan. Great value - especially considering the location... ... which is the BEST location. It is literally right where the East Village starts. Everything you need is steps away - a pizza/bagel joint in the bottom of the building (not affiliated with the hotel), bodgea across the street, McDonald's around the corner, guys selling sunglasses & hats right downstairs. The subway (6-Astor Place) is a block away. There's also a drug store, Starbucks, and KMart right at Astor Place. Great neighborhood - we walked home at 2:30 a.m. and the streets were bustling - did not feel unsafe at all. Staff: They were able to check our luggage until our room was available and were very friendly. They also let us use a bathroom when we arrived (not our bathroom but another room), and delivered the luggage. And nothing weird happened - no sketchy offers, no shady business dealings. Room: Neat, very small. Length wise, it had room for a dining chair against one wall, a double bed, a 12" bedside table, another double bed, and a 2 ft bookcase (a rack slides out to hang clothes). Width wise, there was about 1.5 feet from the end of the bed to the wall. The sheets were regular white hotel sheets. Top blanket was brown and very nubby. No comforter, but this was summer, so maybe they have different linens in the winter. Carpet was what you would expect - very thin and probably grosser than you want to know. Wear socks. My main gripe: The room smelled kind of sharp, like feet or mold. I think it might have been from either the carpet and/or wall A/C. There's a drugstore very close by - I would recommend buying some air freshner if you are sensitive to smell. Outside lock is accessible via keycard and there is a deadbolt on the inside. Bathroom: TINY but clean. Sink, toilet, and a very small shower (your shoulders are basically touching both walls and not the greatest water pressure. Be careful as the water is either scalding hot or cold.) 4 bath towels, 4 wash cloths, 2 hand towels. Ammenities: Cheap soap and shampoo (no conditioner) and NO hairdryer. TV mounted high up on the wall has premium channels (HBO). A few notes: This hotel is CASH only. They do not take credit cards. They do make you pay up front, but this is totally understandable since they don't take credit cards and they need to make sure you don't skip out on them. Entrance is on the South side of Astor Place (8th Street) past the pizza place - not on 3rd Avenue. NOT handicap accessible: no elevators and many stairs. Ask if you can have a room close to the entrance. Our room was toward the back of the hotel so we had to go down two hallways and up another flight of stairs. Not fun with a lot of luggage. The hotel is located one flight up from the ground level. I was a little nervous when I made my reservation as they did not take a credit card to hold the reservation. My room was reserved when we showed up, but I did call a day in advance just to confirm. Before you go shopping, check at the front desk to see if they have coupon cards. They had some for H&M when we stayed - I think for 10% off. The Continental bar, located across the street next to McDonalds has 5 shots for $10.

Yelp
I used to work at Astor Place and spent most of my time in the East Village, so I had always spotted St. Mark's Hotel. As I planned my trip back to NYC for the burlesque festival, I had booked a couple nights at Hotel Chelsea, but opted to save some $$ and booked our last night at St. Mark's Hotel. Staff was super nice. The teeny-tinyness of it reminded me or hotels in France. Since it's only 4 stories, there's no elevator. Little me with my Gigantic suitcase = Ugh!! But for $130/night to stay in the City? Ok! The room was super teeny, but it's the city! You aren't in your hotel room much. I loved the convenience of the area, but that's probably because I know the area like the back of my hand, ha!! And then Ray's Pizza on the corner...can't beat that pizza after all those cocktails!! I'll definitely stay here when I go back.

Yelp
This hotel is found int he East Village of Manhattan. My overall experience was that is was VERY basic, just one step above a hostel and I will tell you why, here are the pros and cons: Pros: - Awesome location! You're right in the heart of a colorful and high energy area of Manhattan. There are tons of cafes, shops, restaurants and bars in this area. I found it quite easy to navigate to Times Square, Statue of Liberty, etc. from here. The location is definitely the best feature. It is also right above a really delicious pizza place. - The price. Hotels in Manhattan run in excess of $200.00 easily. You won't find many for under this price unless you're looking at a hostel. - Convenience. If you're just looking for somewhere to rest your head and have a shower, this place gets the job done. Cons: - The room was the smallest hotel room I've ever stayed in, there were no windows and we barely had room for our suitcases. - There is no elevator and when you have to travel 4 flights with a gigantic suitcase, you're going to wish there was one. The stairs are very narrow and winding. - The room is verrrrrrrrry basic. The carpet was old and dirty, the bedding had holes in it and soap and towels were all random mismatched old items from who knows where. - The washroom was tiny, you could barely turn around in it. - They only accept cash. You cannot pay with debit or credit card. This place is basically just a facility to sleep and wash in. It is cheaper than any other hotel in Manhattan that I could find, but I think I would pay the extra money next time, to at least be somewhere comfortable. If you are traveling alone, you would probably be alright. Make sure to get a room with a window.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I were in New York and through several circumstances we ended up without a place to stay. So we tried the Saint Mark's Hotel. We went to the front desk and asked if they had a room. He said that they were all booked. So as we stepped back to rethink our options another couple stumbled in. The older man was very drunk. The young, slender girl was behind him looking very not drunk, bored and checking her nails. He slurred his words to ask if they had rooms by the hour. After a pregnant pause when the manager looked us over and them over, the manager said that they did and began working with them. I started laughing and we left. It was one of the funniest moments of my life. I'm still enchanted by this hotel and I want to stay here one day.

Yelp
This place has a 2-star feel/look to it, yes. But based on my experience overall, I'll be nice and give them 3. I didn't have a horrible stay here, to be honest. It was ok. I would probably stay here again in the future ONLY because a) it has a prime location in the East Village, and 2) the room served its purpose -- I had a bed to sleep on, a window to look out of, a bathroom to shower in, and a floor to throw my suitcase on (wouldn't that be funny if there wasn't a floor? And impossible, if you think about it.). But believe me, this is not the Hyatt or the Waldorff by any means. The rooms give off a slight assylum feel, if you will. The beds are singles and the TV is bolted to the wall (think of a hospital). They only accept cash and as we found out later that night from someone next door at the bar, they rent rooms by the hour, if ya catch my drift (and if you don't, well...go back under that rock you crawled out from and STAY THERE!). On the upside, the window was large and provided good light in the morning, our towels were plentiful and clean, we had running water, and there was a shelving unit thingie with hangers next to one of the beds where we could hang up our wrinkle-ables. So...as I stated, it served its purpose. And...the price was decently right for that area. WARNING: If someone at the front desk asks you if you need a ride to the airport upon your departure (particularly a tall, darker complected man with black hair who thinks he's Rico Suave or something), tell them NO! NO! NO! Seriously. Catch a cab on your own. We made the mistake of saying yes, we need a cab, but instead, the man called one of those Nazi private car drivers. He wanted to charge us 40 bucks to get to LGA, plus a tip! I don't THINK so. We ran away from him TOO fast, caught a cab down the street, and only ended up paying 27 bucks, THANKYOUVERYMUCH!

Yelp
Don't book here. Cash only. No elevator. Dirty, small, and I wouldn't have gotten it if I wasn't desperate and looked through Expedia. Bad move--the person at the reception was unaccommodating and added extra fees than what Expedia offered me. Stay away if you can. $140 for a tiny dirty room that looks like a junkie's den is too expensive.

Yelp
We feel like we really lucked out with this place. Private bathrooms, cool old building, private AC unit, decent sized room for NYC. The staff was super friendly and the place was very clean. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I feel like they could invest in an ice machine instead of having to walk next door to the pizza place for ice. Great restaurants around, Mark a couple of blocks east has great food and a cool atmosphere and the place across the street (I can't remember the name) has awesome happy hour specials until 10pm and the absolute best sangria I've ever had. Awesome experience. Super close to the metro made it easy to get around the city. I plan on staying here again the next time I come to NYC.

Yelp
I booked here through hotels.com a few weeks in advance. I called the morning I was arriving with a question about check-in and got no voicemail or answer. I proceeded to call 12 more times and email, and no one ever answered the phone! I was left to try to find another hotel in Manhattan for 2 nights in the summer, really not an ideal situation!!

Yelp
First off, if you're a high maintainence person this is NOT the hotel for you. There are not many frills and it's not much up from a hostel (you get your own room and bath room). The rooms are small but you know what? The low price you pay for the FANTASTIC location is worth it. You're within walking distance to lots of great shopping and food. The rooms are clean enough there is a working tv with about a dozen or so chanels of standard cable fare (CNN, etc.). Though if you're in NYC why are you watching tv anyway??? To be honest, it's not fancy but you know what I'd stay here again because of price and location. I haven't seen anything sketchy going on here like some other posters have said and I feel safe here at night. I'd recommend it to friends, not somewhere I'd set up older family members or kids though. There are some steep stairs and no elevator which is kind of a pain but hey it's exercise to work off some of those pizzas and cupcakes I've been eating on my trip! PS - Pizza place directly below is delish too in case you're hungry late at night. PLEASE NOTE - they accept cash or travellers checks only.

Yelp
I stayed here on a recommendation from an acquaintance who says this is his go-to spot whenever he's in NYC. I had made a reservation over the phone about six weeks before my trip and it was honored when I got there, though I did call before leaving just to double-check. Like a lot of things in New York City, this hotel is old. The rooms feel old, the bedding feels old, the carpets feel old. I got a single room (I was staying by myself) and honestly, it took me a little while to feel comfortable here. It wasn't that I felt unsafe - I didn't - but the bedding didn't feel fresh, and the energy in the room was strange, like something bad had happened there at one point. I found out later this place has quite the history, which might have been why. (Google it.) That being said, I was impressed by the soundproofing in the building. Usually I find hotels to be very loud, with a lot of noise travelling from adjacent rooms and through the hallways, but St. Mark's Hotel was actually really quiet. I still used my earplugs to keep out the traffic noise but that was all I needed them for. I didn't run into any bedbugs but I did see a couple of carpet beetles, which are common. No roaches or anything like that, either. The hot water takes a bit to warm up - again, it's an old building - but once you give it a few minutes it's quite nice. The staff were also very friendly and helpful with directions and amenities, like a hair dryer, which you have to ask for from the desk. There is no fridge in the room, but there's a really great grocery store just a couple of blocks away that sells amazing takeout food if you don't feel like heading to a restaurant for every meal. The only thing is, with a single room at St. Mark's there is no table to sit at - you just get your bed, a chair, and a small wardrobe for your bags and clothes. Would I stay here again? It would really depend on the kind of trip I was taking. It's a tough price to beat. If you are low maintenance, open minded, and on a budget, then this place will work out just fine. But if I was taking a trip with my mom or hoping to have a nice, romantic getaway with my partner? I'd probably try to find another option. The energy of this place was just a bit too weird sometimes.

Yelp
This is a place to crash in the middle of all the Manhattan action. Nothing fancy, no special perks, but neat, clean, and, most importantly, quiet. There's the noise on the street to contend with, of course, but it's unlikely that you would be looking to stay at this location if you don't relish urban noise. I've stayed at "nicer" hotels where I could hear people talking in adjacent rooms, and that prevented me from sleeping, and was generally annoying. At St. Mark's, I felt like I was in a pocket of calm in the middle of the city--I was happy to come back to my room each night, and I slept very well.

Yelp
LONG REVIEW. I can't believe people gave this place more than two stars. I'm giving it two only because of it's location - but other than that, I won't be staying here again unless I suddenly leave my current profession and become a hooker. A friend and I were coming from Boston and decided we'd just stay up all night - bad idea, because around 3am we were crashing hard. (Somewhere around 23rd?) I figured ..hmm, st. mark's. So we went back down and decided we'll take a nap. I asked the guy behind the window if it was clean and he said "well we change the sheets". This meant we'd be sleeping in our jackets. There was a chart near him that had the hour people went in. He handed us the key, I handed him $50 for two hours and said someone would bang on the door when our time was up,hahaha. Behind us was a creepy old man with a bag and a hooker. Swanky. So we walk in.. and it looks just like a creepy hotel. The bathroom looks clean only because I'm sure no one stays here long enough to shower. We kept all our clothes on and I turned on the tv so I didn't have to hear the people in other rooms having sex. The tv turned out to be two choices: porn or cartoon network. Awesome My friend was sleeping within 10 minutes but I just couldn't do it. After an hour, I felt gross laying there so I washed my face.. and saw roaches. I had a heart attack and we got the hell out of there and spent our morning at the Washington Sq Park diner.

Yelp
It was the only place downtown that was available. It was a pleasant dump and much better than a crack den. I would rather spend an extra $50/night and stay at a much nicer place.

Yelp
You get exactly what you pay for, and more because of the location. Very clean but simple place to stay, probably the most affordable place in Manhattan. Would recommend for others, and East Village is a great area to explore. Had a few issues with the hot water, but once I figured it out (have to turn the handle a few times) I had no problems nor did the people I stayed with. Also, remember they only take cash or travelers checks so remember to bring that with you when you go to pay.

Yelp
PROSTITUTION RING!!! Was before and still is a prostitution ring! http://www.nytimes.com/1995/09/28/nyregion/slayings-point-to-serial-killer-police-say.html This hotel was recommended by conference organizers (wish I read the article linked above before I booked it!). I booked a room via a well-known travel booking site, received confirmation as usual. When I tried to check in, hotel demanded cash payment, which was not anywhere on my reservation. Hotel manager tried hard to convince me NOT to stay there, cancel my reservation and book elsewhere. While I was on a phone to the travel booking site, a hotel "guest" came, paid $60 for 2 hours and asked to hold the room till he goes to get his "partner". If you want a dirty room where people stay by the hour, then this may work for you. International travelers, please be vary, as hotel manager requests to hold your passports. Who knows what he does with them!? Do NOT stay here. Avoid this place, unless you want to pick up a venereal disease

Yelp
St. Mark's hotel A good friend has stayed there a few times and highly recommended it to me I live in the neighborhood I called on the phone the man who answered the phone said you don't need a reservation we have plenty of rooms this was after I said I would like to reserve a room for tonight Now no matter what you think The way I think is if somebody anybody works at an establishment or answers the phone The establishment is responsible for what the person says and does let me repeat I asked for a reservation at was told you don't need one today we have plenty of rooms A few hours later when I was ready to get my room another man answered the phone and told me there are no rooms I went ballistic I said I have my family with me and we are ready to come to a room promised to us by a man who told us to " just walk in" The man I was speaking to asked me who promised it to you? I said somebody who works at your hotel and answers the phone when you call your hotel I got very angry the man on the up on me I called back he never picked up the phone so I have no review of the inside of the hotel why when I ever a go to this crappy horribly run place anyway

Yelp
This. Is. The. Absolute. Worst. Experience. Ever! I gave 1 star because I had to choose a star. First off, who accepts cash only in Manhattan?! Then there's no elevator, we had to pull our very heavy luggage up five flights of stairs with kids in tow!! On top of that there's no lobby!! Like, what?! Unheard of! I went completely bananas! When I finally went to the room, it was completely crappy...small and uncomfortable. Please don't tell me they allow cash to keep the price low. That's exactly what they want you to believe and some people accept that nonsense. You're actually paying taxes on your stay, but St. Marks Hotel is probably not paying all of its taxes since its revenues are in cash. I paid almost $200 a night. That is not cheap! I most definitely could have gotten something much better for the same price or even cheaper. Anyways, I immediately cancelled my remaining stay and went somewhere else! Go somewhere else, please!!

Melissa T.

Yelp
This hotel is creepy. They rent rooms by the hour and only take cash payment per day. The rates that are on hotels.com are higher than what you would pay if you called to book a room. If you don't mind sharing a wall with people engaging in illegal activities, then go ahead and stay here. It's cheap. It's also dirty and uncomfortable. I had to demand my money back because of the noises I heard from the room next door and throughout the hallway. You have been warned.

Yelp
WORST HOTEL STAY EVER!!! Went here cause of the location. Alot of college students and night life. However the ppl at the front desk had attitude and were not very accomodating. Our AC unit had giant gaps all around it letting all the warm air and bugs in. I had to literally request maintenance five times because it was unbareably hot in the room. When I tried to get another room they said none were available which was BS cause we saw ppl come in later and book one! The next morning I had to complain about the rough night and all he said was. Okay... sorry have a nice day. No discount or anything. Such B.S. This hotel due to the location had potential to be a good place to crash for $150. But you have to be very firm with these ppl and make sure you check your room before you book it. But if you find another place for equal price or a little more. Take it.
