Yelp
[I'm copying my Trip Advisor review since I'm too lazy to write a new one - but thought this hotel deserved a bump since it's not SO bad.]
Booked this hotel on the recommendation of a friend who said it was good "if we just needed a place to sleep and shower." She was 100% spot on. This hotel is one step up from a hostel - beds, toilet, shower. Not a place to luxuriate and relax but you can dump your stuff and get some sleep. And please - you're in NYC. Who's hanging out in the lobby of the hotel?
Other guests were primarily European, 25-48 yrs old. We did NOT see any hookers. Or johns. Or pimps. I would not have my mother, husband, kids, or boss stay here. It's definitely a 'party weekend' hotel because of the quality of the room.
Price: Our total price for one night was $155 for 2 double beds, probably the cheapest rate you will find in Manhattan. Great value - especially considering the location...
... which is the BEST location. It is literally right where the East Village starts. Everything you need is steps away - a pizza/bagel joint in the bottom of the building (not affiliated with the hotel), bodgea across the street, McDonald's around the corner, guys selling sunglasses & hats right downstairs. The subway (6-Astor Place) is a block away. There's also a drug store, Starbucks, and KMart right at Astor Place. Great neighborhood - we walked home at 2:30 a.m. and the streets were bustling - did not feel unsafe at all.
Staff: They were able to check our luggage until our room was available and were very friendly. They also let us use a bathroom when we arrived (not our bathroom but another room), and delivered the luggage. And nothing weird happened - no sketchy offers, no shady business dealings.
Room: Neat, very small. Length wise, it had room for a dining chair against one wall, a double bed, a 12" bedside table, another double bed, and a 2 ft bookcase (a rack slides out to hang clothes). Width wise, there was about 1.5 feet from the end of the bed to the wall.
The sheets were regular white hotel sheets. Top blanket was brown and very nubby. No comforter, but this was summer, so maybe they have different linens in the winter.
Carpet was what you would expect - very thin and probably grosser than you want to know. Wear socks.
My main gripe: The room smelled kind of sharp, like feet or mold. I think it might have been from either the carpet and/or wall A/C. There's a drugstore very close by - I would recommend buying some air freshner if you are sensitive to smell.
Outside lock is accessible via keycard and there is a deadbolt on the inside.
Bathroom: TINY but clean. Sink, toilet, and a very small shower (your shoulders are basically touching both walls and not the greatest water pressure. Be careful as the water is either scalding hot or cold.) 4 bath towels, 4 wash cloths, 2 hand towels.
Ammenities: Cheap soap and shampoo (no conditioner) and NO hairdryer. TV mounted high up on the wall has premium channels (HBO).
A few notes:
This hotel is CASH only. They do not take credit cards. They do make you pay up front, but this is totally understandable since they don't take credit cards and they need to make sure you don't skip out on them.
Entrance is on the South side of Astor Place (8th Street) past the pizza place - not on 3rd Avenue.
NOT handicap accessible: no elevators and many stairs. Ask if you can have a room close to the entrance. Our room was toward the back of the hotel so we had to go down two hallways and up another flight of stairs. Not fun with a lot of luggage. The hotel is located one flight up from the ground level.
I was a little nervous when I made my reservation as they did not take a credit card to hold the reservation. My room was reserved when we showed up, but I did call a day in advance just to confirm.
Before you go shopping, check at the front desk to see if they have coupon cards. They had some for H&M when we stayed - I think for 10% off.
The Continental bar, located across the street next to McDonalds has 5 shots for $10.
