St. Paul's Chapel

I love coming here to meditate—it’s clean, warm, and has a great atmosphere. Plus, on certain days, the security guards are surprisingly friendly. I stopped by on Friday, January 31st, after 2 PM, and the pianist/organist was having an absolute jam session. He was going all out, which was a pleasant surprise. So if you’re looking for some impressive organ music, this seems like the best time to go!

Absolutely wonderful yet heart breaking experience! You will have a somber reflection realizing what took place around that church on the morning of September 11. There is no doubt the hand of God spared that building to be a place of ministry for hurting souls in the years since that fateful day.

The building itself looks really nice. It's free for visitors to take a look around. It looks really nice inside, but there's not much to see. It probably takes 10 minutes if you're taking your time looking at everything.

St. Paul’s Chapel is a great addition to find a moment of peace and quiet in New York. If you are doing a 9/11 tour of different places it’s a must stop by. There wasn’t a wait to walk into the chapel, and the people at the door were super friendly. There wasn’t a time limit to be in the building. I spent about 15 minutes relaxing and checking out the displays they had. Next time I hope I’m available when they have a service to check it out.

Visiting the Chapel put us in the reverential frame of mind that prepared us for the 9/11 Memorial. The Chapel was quiet and allowed us time to read the information and take in both its early U.S. historical significance and its role in caring for the first responders to the WTC tragedy. Walking through the Chapel's graveyard was the perfect reflective transition to then walk to the 9/11 Memorial.

I found the cemetery very nice. There are some small plaques with short life stories of certain people resting here.

Faith brings people together. St. Paul's Chapel of Trinity Church was established in 1766. When the Great Fire of 1776 destroyed the church, the chapel was saved by the fire brigade. After George Washington was sworn in as the first President of the United States, he attended services at this chapel. After 9/11, the chapel, which stands directly across from the World Trade Center, served rescue and recovery workers for the next months. The chapel miraculously survived the attacks without damage. The exterior was covered in debris, but not even a pane of glass was broken. Incredible. Interesting to walk through the historic cemetery and chapel to be able to soak in the history of this sacred house of worship.

The church is located in Financial District and is very close to the 9/11 Memorial. The Church is intact. Surrounding the church is a cemetery. St. Paul's Chapel is part of the Trinity church. Note that this is an operating church and they do have services during the weekend and during the day. People are free to go in and walk around the church. The church was built in the late 1700s. This church is worth a visit.

St.Paul's Chapel was founded in 1766. It is part of the Trinity Wall Street parish. George Washington prayed here after his inauguration as President in 1789. It is open to visitors daily and worship services are held in the chapel every Sunday. The chapel regularly hosts community events, concerts, and art exhibitions. The churchyard is open to visitors who wish to visit the historic memorials and monuments or enjoy a moment of quiet. Free guided tours are offered Fridays at 3pm. Meet at the pulpit inside St. Paul's Chapel. Beginning Sunday May 13, the 8am, 9.15 am, 11;15 am, and 8 pm Compline services will take place at St. Paul's Chapel.

Can ashes please be distributed at St. Paul like before the pandemic?? There would be a short, beautiful service and then ashes would be distributed. I truly miss this happening at this location. Why was it stopped? Please go back to doing this service for us who work in this area. Walking 5 blocks down is not easy for everyone. Much appreciation. Thank you.

This is a beautiful church that my buddy and I walked around and looked at it's amazing sites on the outside and went inside and saw the ambience in the historical landmarks and it has. It's right next to the old world trade center and it just brings a lot of feelings and emotions and it's an excellent Chapel

The Awesome and historic old church is well maintained, organized and taken care of by the friendly management and crew. You can still see the marks made on the wooden pews by the equipment of the rescue and recovery workers as they rested from their jobs of looking for victims of the September 11 terrorist attack at the World Trade Center site across the street.

This church is definitely worth a visit, since it's the oldest church in NYC, having been built in 1766. George Washington worshipped here during the 2 years that NYC was the nation's capital. The church is done in a Georgian style and is very plain but beautiful. It is worth mentioning that this location was pivotal after the cowardly terrorist attacks of 9/11/01. Many people posted flyers of people they were looking for on the fence surrounding the church (it was such a sad thing to see). Many workers who helped in the clean-up actually slept inside the church, making it even more significant. St. Paul's sits in the heart of the city I love.

I was in the area and finally checked the inside of the church and it felt bittersweet. Even after all these years, it was still a somber feeling in the air from 9/11. The outside and cemetery was more attractive than the inside of the church. There are a few benches for you to sit outdoors. There isn't a fee to check out the church but you can make a donation in one of the boxes as soon as you enter the church. Inside of the church was a lot of informative reading all of its historical events and facts. I love that the church still works to service the poor and undeserved. On the day I visited I saw church affiliates giving out food. The church is surrounded by so many attractions that you can spend most of your day in the surrounding area. Its definitely a place to check out when you're in the area.

My rating is low only because I found it depressing. The inside is all dedicated to those that lost their lives at the WTC. I brought my friend in September. She was visiting from out of town. It was a new experience and memorable for her. The historic cemetery is nice. The gift of the bell and dedication is really nice. It was nice to know they let people inside the Chapel. Many people want to remember their loved ones. If you visit the WTC Memorial and Museum you should come to St. Paul's. There isn't a charge. You can donate in the donation box if you like.

This is Manhattan's only existing pre-revolutionary (1766) church. Famous historical figures worshipped here including George Washington (he had his own pew!) and Benjamin Harrison. The 9/11 tragedy forever changed the role of St. Paul. It served as a refuge for the hundreds of firefighters, police, volunteers who were involved in the aftermath of 9/11. Memorabilia such as letters, pictures, testaments, etc. are now displayed throughout the chapel. The city's unwavering spirit and the American people's compassion for each other are evident in the memoirs displayed here. It's impossible not to shed a tear when you're here. Looking back at these, I still can't believe that I stood at the WTC site one week before 9/11 happened. I feel even more fortunate to have been back in SF already TWO days before terrorists struck. Every time I'm in NYC, I always make it a point to go back to St. Paul. Not so I won't forget, but so that I can remember.

After our tour of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, we wanted to see St. Paul's Chapel, or, "The Little Chapel That Stood", It is the Episcopal chapel located at 209 Broadway, between Fulton Street and Vesey Street, that withstood both the Great New York City Fire of 1776 and the attack of 9/11. During the latter event, the church was used as a shelter and relief center for rescue workers. The fence around the church was completely covered with flags, FDNY hats, T-shirts, photos and letters. It was built in 1766 and is the oldest surviving church building in Manhattan. The church is so beautiful in its simplicity. The church seems dwarfed by all the tall skyscrapers that surround it.

Conveniently located near Fulton St. Subway Station all trains stops here, walking distance, check it out.

The church is cute, but what drives most people here (except for locals worshippers) are the testimonials of countless citizens who volunteered their energy and time to help rescue workers do their job in the aftermath of the events that took place on 9/11. Meals were being served, beddings were prepared and psychological support was provided. I read somewhere that even health care professionals - such as massage therapists - came to help, and musicians were doing their part to make these workers' job a little more bearable. You can see some of these items inside the church.

St Paul's is not an impressive looking church, but is a very historical colonial church. It was built in 1766 and is the oldest church in Manhattan. They still hold services here too. Yes, it is a little small and looks worn, but you would be missing out if you skipped this place.In fact, George Washington's pew is still here from when he worshiped in the 1780s.

This chapel is a sharp contrast to the WTC. It is the oldest building around and the WTC is one of the newest. Situated in the shadow of the WTC this place is well worth a visit for its historical interest.

This review isn't for the cynics, naysayers or conspiracy theorist, but for regular people who were profoundly affected by the events of 9/11. I've visited St. Paul's several times since 9/11. No matter how many times I've been in this hallowed space, it has never failed to elicit tears of sadness--and joy. Located directly in front of the World Trade Center site, signs on the front gates proudly declare St. Paul's to be: Manhattan's Oldest Public Building, Witness to the Great Fire of 1776, Host to George Washington's Inauguration and Survivor of the Terrorist Attack on September 11, 2001--so much history for such a little church. Inside, the church appears to be frozen in time. Not one wall is untouched by artifacts from that day. Set up like a museum with various exhibits, visitors are encouraged to walk the circuit, pause and contemplate. One exhibit that's particularly moving is dedicated to the firefighters and first responders. Photographs show weary rescuers sleeping in their gear on the church's pews--their hands and faces blackened by fire and soot. Some of the actual cots they rested on are still on display--complete with the teddy bears brought by kids to lay on their pillows. Behind glass is a pair of fireman boots with thick rubber soles that were burned nearly all the way through from navigating the burning debris until it hit skin. In all this devastation, you literally feel rescued from the depths of sadness as you read that in the midst of all this, ordinary people pulled together to serve those who had given so much. Several walls of photographs show hundreds of nameless doctors, grief counselors, massage therapists, restaurant owners and other regular people who provided round the clock food, comfort and care to the heroes. There's also a collection of messages of support from school kids and people from around the world that once dotted nearly every square inch of the church. Though very sad, I enjoy visiting St. Paul's because it's a poignant reminder that miracles do happen--that even through a catastrophic day that took so many lives and brought down seemingly indestructible skyscrapers, a little, 250-year old church could survive and mean so much to a city in mourning. P.S. This church is also directly in front of the Stage Door Deli--the only area eatery to reopen immediately after 9/11. Even though it was nearly destroyed, the owners, Greek immigrants, felt it was their duty to provide food and water to the rescue workers. Though it nearly bankrupted this family, they survived and are one of only two businesses that rebuilt and stayed. Standing in front of the St Paul's, I am looking at the sky. Peaceful sky. The spire of the oldest church in the city silhouettes against the blue, and next to it, new Freedom Tower shining in morning sun rays. Old and new. Past, present and future. Sometimes, history is what we learn from text books. And sometimes, history is what we live through. St. Paul's Chapel was standing proud thru September 11, lending helping hand, offering shelter and support. Standing proud still, history in place. And here we are, standing next to it, hearts filled with memories and love for this city and it's people. Stop. Look. Remember.

In stillness of meditation, St. Paul's Chapel is a good place for quietness as can ponder thoughts into infinity. The interior is beautiful with high ceiling of white pillars and chandeliers. The ground is a small cemetery dating back to Colonial-era where visitors can walk through at select times-- peacefully and with respect. St. Paul's Chapel may be a chapel not a church as to a clinic is not a hospital and a college is not a university, but this chapel is very active with the Civic Center Downtown community for worship, community events, cultural activities, and sometimes small concerts. I have long been a fan of this historic chapel. The year prior to 9/11 I ran an outside sales team and my base was right outside the gates facing the WTC. I would often stop in to feel the history of the place or to walk through the cemetery and think about how long ago these people lived and how different this city was back then. After 9/11 the place has a whole other meaning, it was used as a triage,equipment storage and I am sure a place of rest and peace for the thousands of workers and responders during those dark days. I remember coming here the Thanksgiving after and seeing all the banners and signs all the people from across the world had left here. Now it serves as a place of remembrance of those dark days in our countries and cities history. I came here with a friend visiting from Texas on the same day we went to the 9/11 memorial and I felt much more here. Seeing the pictures, the ribbons and all in such a setting really hit home without all the security and cattle like herding of the memorial site. I particularly felt the banner from the people of Oklahoma, a state which sadly we have a kinship with in knowing the pain of tragedy. I suggest all New Yorkers make a trip here for both the 9/11 connection and the history of the place. To stand in the place George Washington took his inaugural speech is really something special.

This church is a great representation of what faith is all about. After 9/11, this church fed the volunteers and even gave them places to rest. The 9/11 shrines inside the church are certain to bring a tear to your eye. Tons of great history in this church as well!

History trivia: George Washington, along with other US Congress members, worshipped at this church. St. Paul's is one of the oldest churches in NYC built in the late 18th century, and it houses the remembrance of 9/11. After my 9/11 Memorial Museum visit, I came here, as my own tribute to fallen heroes. Outside the church in the courtyard is a grave. Not sure if it's a real grave or not, if so, then that's sort of creepy to be taking pictures of the dead. But, I did so anyway. When you walk in, there are countless pictures and memorandum of 9/11 everywhere. St. Paul's became the "central location," for prayers and a place of refuge for New Yorkers after the attacks. Fitting, since the world trade towers are located a block away. I sat in one of the pews and just looked at the alter. I saw an elderly woman get down on her knees and give a quick prayer. I closed my eyes too, and thanked god, the universe, whatever, for bringing me to this place. I'll be honest, this chapel is somber. No one spoke, it's just that kind of place. The overall feeling is great sadness. So, I couldn't stay inside for too long. After about 10 minutes, I left.

My 88-year old Grandmother is visiting from Poland for the summer so we went on a day long excursion of churches, masses, memorials, brunches and parks in the city. We started the day off with this church and I might have been converted! No, not religiously. But I think I'm now able to sing in public! The music director involved everyone attending mass (the 9/11 displays surrounding the inside of the church were still open to the public as mass commenced) and had us practice some lines, "Alle, Alle, Alleluja". I got all into it. I really enjoyed the female priests sermon - she talked in the same way as I imagine she would if you saw her on the street and she started to tell you about her day. It immediately got my attention. Go for the history - George Washington prayed here! Go for the memorials to the victims and relief workers of 9/11. Stay for the songs. Sing your little heart out, everyone else will too.

This chapel is easily overlooked since it's a bit run-down and it in the shadows of the WTC and other attractions. Even the Fulton subway stop seems more grand. But you'd be missing some serious history if you didn't stop in to take a look. There is George Washington's bench on display. The pulpit with the crown also has historical significance. It's a beautiful space that seems like it belongs more in Boston than in NY. It also has a bathroom in the back.

Despite being directly across from the site of the World Trade Centre, this little church was relatively undamaged in he aftermath of the attack - an ancient Sycamore tree fell over and its branches acted as a shield to save the church from almost certain destruction, many say this was no accident. Regardless of what you believe this small chapel played a huge part in the rescue and clearup efforts providing rest and recuperation for the hundreds of rescue workers. Over the following 8 months, rescue workers could find a bed, food and help from Massage therapists, chiropractors and podiatrists, and counselling. The chapel now holds a moving exhibit to all the workers and volunteers showing examples of mementos of all kinds left for the workers: teddy bears and t-shirts, notes of thanks and support, it really does send a chill down your spine even 7 years on. What made my visit even more memorable was a visiting school choir giving an impromptu performance, the melody echoing round the walls whilst reading about the incredible efforts will stay with me together. Outside the chapel is the a bell presented to St Pauls by the Mayor of London in 2002 called the Bell of Hope. This bell was rang 4 times on July 8 2005 as a tribute to the victims of the 4 London bomb attacks which happened the previous day.

Most of these reviews are for tourists, but this is a thriving church. If you're looking for a church service that serves families, I cannot recommend the community of the 9:15 Sunday church more. It is a short service (45 minutes) with kids at the center. Little ones runs around throughout the service, sit on the rug during the sermon and crowd the altar for communion. The songs are spirited (some favorites are reprised frequently--originally I didn't love the often-repeated songs, but I have come to really appreciate these songs we learn by heart as a community). The community is wonderfully welcoming to all. I'm a single mom and I have always been accepted and supported. The community is welcoming of gay and lesbian folks as well. The focus on compassion, inclusion and social justice is welcome in this day and age. I'm so grateful that my son has this beautiful community to grow, learn and thrive with. And I'm grateful for me too. I will say, it can be a bit overwhelming the first service--it's bigger than any church I've been to, but as soon as I got to know folks, it was a very welcoming place.

I found this church randomly while wandering through Manhattan, and was at first unfamiliar with it. As I perused the tombstones outside, I began to notice how far back many of them dated. I had a sudden realization that people had stood here in the 18th Century, burying their loved ones, and probably attending this very church as well. I quickly researched the church online, and was glad that I did. As it turns out, I had managed to stumble upon what is possibly the most historic little place in this enormous city. It was built between 1764 - 1766, and though no one today would call it a "tall" building in any respect, at the time of its completion it was actually the tallest building in New York! During the Revolutionary War, soldiers trained in the yard, some of them overseen by Alexander Hamilton (who is now buried in the chapel cemetery). George Washington was an attendee of the church (the exact pew that he frequented is still here). For more recent history, St. Paul's also played an integral role in the rescue efforts directly following the September 11th attacks in 2001, and was a place of shelter and refuge during that time. It is considered miraculous that the church was not damaged in any way by the attacks. Today, it is the oldest public building in New York of continuous operation. The only thing that I disliked about the church was that inside, there are many people peddling tourist-type wares, many of which have to do with September 11th. Really? I hope that these people are at least donating the money that they make off of this trade... But nevertheless it did seem a bit irreverent, to be trying to sell people 9/11 trinkets. Other than that, this place is great. Definitely a place to see in New York, especially for people who love history, like me!

Beautiful. I'm not a church-goer. In fact, I usually get a little uncomfortable in houses of worship, and I have never been to a service of any kind. However, this Christmas my cousin and I decided on a whim to attend the Midnight Mass at this church. The church itself is steeped in history - as Manhattan's oldest public building in continuous use, and the closest house of worship to the site of the World Trade Center, there is huge significance between the walls of St Paul's. On one side of the church you can see George Washington's pew, and on the other side you can see artifacts still remaining from the September 11th attacks. The service itself was beautiful - we did not feel unwelcome or uncomfortable at all, and we took great pleasure in singing carols and participating in the Mass along with the others in attendance. It was a very memorable way to spend my first Christmas in New York, and learn a bit more about this holiday that so many in our country celebrate. 5 stars for historic and cultural value, open-mindedness, and no pretenses.

Dear Fellow New York City Visitor: Like you, when in Manhattan, I find myself strangely drawn to the site of the World Trade Center. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 were without a doubt the most significant event of any of our lifetimes. We watched on TV as the unthinkable happened, and we remember vividly the incredible heroism of that day, and how our nation pulled together in its aftermath. I guess it's only natural for us to want to see it, to feel some kind of physical connection with it. The thing is, if you go to the site of World Trade Center to gawk and take pictures of what remains there, all you're going to do is irritate, if not offend, the actual, real life New Yorkers who experienced this tragedy firsthand, not through a TV set. And, if you purchase the schlock that people will try to sell you at the site of Ground Zero, then all you're doing is adding to the profit of those who seek to gain from tragedy. Might I suggest visiting St. Paul's chapel instead of the WTC site? Here you really feel that connection you're looking for. This tiny 18th century church somehow made it through that horrible day unscathed. It was transformed into an ad hoc headquarters for those heroic rescue workers who toiled for months at Ground Zero. It is now a testament to what happened that day and the greatness that came out of it. So, slip into George Washington's pew and reflect for a bit on what this little church went through. Trust me, it will be a much more meaningful experience than standing and gaping on Church Street. Sincerely, Dave S.

Neat graveyard too, one of the very few in Manhattan. "The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 were without a doubt the most significant event of any of our lifetimes." I must disagree. Other events were horrific: the Vietnam War, and, of course, WW II.

When I worked near Wall Street, I used to come in here at the end of a particularly hectic day, just to reflect and gain perspective. I'm not religious -- I'm what you call a "Cafeteria-California-Catholic" -- I just barely getting my obligation under the wire by attending mass yearly; raised by progressive, liberal parents who didn't force me to go to church, but took me during holidays to appease my East Coast relatives and understand their history. But I'm very spiritual and St. Paul's is more than a church -- it became a sanctuary for the rescue workers of 9/11 to catch an hour of shut-eye, eat their first meal in 24 hours, or cry. The first time I came here, I was overpowered by feelings of raw emotion and grief; the pain and suffering of those who perished and their families was just undeniably palpable. By far the most touching is to see the numerous pictures of the missing -- to me, a more fitting tribute than the World Trade site. It associates a name, face, and story to each of the departed, and you get a sense of how fleeting and precious this life we take for granted is. Celebrate and live it.

As historic buildings go, this little sanctuary is a wonderful place for contemplation. For true patriots there is Washington's pew and a cute cemetery with quaint gravestones, and of course the church's 9/11 involvement is displayed. For the more spiritual, this place is a peaceful haven, original and charming and a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle of busy and noisy streets. Visit early morning when the angels are just waking, light a candle and think about all those you love.

Beautiful colonial church just steps away from the World Trade Center. There was an event happening when I went by recently, so we could only look at the cemetery and the outside of the building. I've been inside before, though, and it's majestic but understated, unlike the other churches (two of them cathedrals) I visited in NYC. A must if you're into churches or 9/11 memorials.

St. Paul's Chapel of Trinity Church is a historical church that's located near Ground Zero. This church was used during the disaster as a safe haven for first responders who needed a place to pray and sleep during the terrible events on 9/11. Now, people from all over the World, can visit this church and see different exhibits of the many men and women who helped during the tragedy. This church is open on Sundays for regular prayer services. When you visit you can't help but to get a little emotional. So bring some tissue.

Besides the fact this place is still around even after the twin towers fell like RIGHT next to it. it's a great place to get a bathroom pitstop because everything around doesn't allow you to use their restrooms or they want you to purchase something. gets 5 stars because of the bathrooms! although they are not super clean or spacious. they get the job done

We happened upon it when walking by and wasn't sure we wanted to go in, but saw the 9/11 displays in front and stopped to read and then realized the significance of this little church and the role it played that day. It miraculously survived 9/11 but massive amts of debris littered the old grave yard, computers, papers, furniture. And the humane, voluntary relief ministry it served for 2 yrs after that for Ground Zero workers. It's famous as the "Little Chapel that stood". I felt humbled to learn that on April 30, 1789, George Washington took the oath at Federal Hall on Wall Street to become our 1st President of the US and walked from there to St. Paul's Chapel to attend services and pray. I was walking in his footsteps. They even have the pew he used, preserved for us to see. Inside are many reminders of the 9/11 events. The names on the ancient grave sites are no longer visible as we walked around the outside grounds. This little church also held the official memorial service for President Washington in 1799 and President James Monroe's funeral service in 1831. A wonderful walk thru history.

We felt very welcome here on Easter. The service flowed well. The building smelled of wonderful Easter flowers and there were beautiful arrangements everywhere. I would highly recommend.

I don't know how you can not give this place 5 stars. This church has had a prominent role in our nations history since before the American Revolution. George Washington worshiped here and during September 11th rescue workers used this as a place of refuge. This church is literally across the street from ground zero and came away practically unscathed. Throughout the church is a history of the role this church played in the lives of many New Yorkers. This is definitely a must see place when visiting New York.

A hidden gem that has stood and served the people of New York for so many years. A part of its history especially after 9/11 when they were open as a place for comfort to the rescue workers who need a place for coffee, sandwiches, sup and solace amidst the terror and horror going on at the World Trade Center Site down the street. A beautiful place to sit and reflect. Around the walls beautiful displays of its history. An amazing graveyard to explore outside. Worth the trip for sure.

It is incredible to look out from this church and see the the one world observatory building and how close the two towers stood considering this church was left physically undamaged! Have a walk through the garden and stop inside, when I visited a lady was playing in the piano which gave a great ambience to the church, as expected the sense of tranquil and peace is overwhelming such a calm place to spend a few minutes outside there hustle and bustle of the city! Take time to look at the great work undertaken here after the 9/11 incident it is truly mind blowing reading the stories and you can also pay your respects at the memorial still in place.

With its beautiful stained glass windows and golden doors with reliefs, this is an impressive church. It is an ideal place to settle down and take in some quiet time to pray. There is a small museum on the bottom floor. It has a room inside to pray and have solitude with your thoughts. There are envelopes to donate money to the hurricane relief.

a moving tribute to 9/11 (those who passed and those who helped serve). there was a group singing while we were there.. and wow.. tears came to my eyes. stories, quotes and items from those who sought refuge in the minutes and hours after the towers fell.. i've visited this area about 4-5x before and this was the first time i actually went into the church (who knew you could?!) because of a tour i was on, i would recommend dropping by if you want to get a full experience.

Since this is next to the World Trade Center site a lot of tourists show up here.

A historic church, made even more so by events from 9/11. This church was a place of refuge for many firemen and other responders as well as survivors of that terrorist attack, as it miraculously survived the attack and building collapse of towers 1 & 2. A solemn place of worship that is still in use today. George Washington had a pew here, which is preserved today. You can pray at the altar area. It now houses a lot of 9/11 memorabilia. There were Docents conducting tours around the building. Three unisex restrooms available . Right at the front entrance is the Bell of Hope, donated to New York City by the Mayor of London on September 11, 2002 to mark the one year anniversary of the attacks on The World Trade Center Complex. It has rung on the anniversary every year since and has also been sounded for the bombings in London and Madrid. The bell in located in St Paul's Chapel's yard or cemetery across from Ground Zero. Well maintained gardens and cemetery right outside the church. A good reminder of what we often take for granted: safety, security and peace.

I am so glad we accidentally stumbled in to this little church. It is right across from Ground Zero so it was bound to be impacted by the events of 9/11. You can see what a place of refuge it was. I was of course moved by the memorials and photos of the victims. The thing that really stood out for me was the bench that was preserved with all of the marks from the firefighters and workers. The pews were scarred from the belts, buckles, etc that they were wearing as they slept on the pews. For some reason it just really got to me - like the scars of the whole thing were ingrained in the church itself. On another note, it is a beautiful old church where George Washington worshiped. There's also a lovely little cemetery from that time period in front. If you are already in the area looking at the 9/11 memorial, it's a worthy stop.

Having worked in the area for almost five years, I first stepped into this church on Good Friday. It is stunning inside and amazing that this chapel withstood the test of time. The Good Friday service was beautiful. While I was bummed for having to work on Good Friday, knowing that I was able to experience this day with others at St. Paul's made it much better. If I lived in the city, this would def. be my go to church. I loved it and will be back!

st pauls chapel is part of the parish of trinity church located at the very start of broadway - between wall street & ground zero - there is a very moving exhibition on the part the church played in 9/11 - looking after the firemen/police/volunteers who worked tirelessly for many weeks and months afterwards it was on the church railings that people posted the stories and photographs of their missing loved ones other reasons to visit are - it is the oldest church and public building in new york - they still have george washington's pew - i've posted one of my photos and one of the churchyard @ 9/11
