Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Valletta, Malta's Eccentric Capital | Condé Nast Traveler

"I made sure to get there early to see Caravaggio’s monumental Beheading of St John the Baptist (painted in 1607) because the masterpiece can get very crowded; the cathedral is a key stop if you’re following Valletta’s deep artistic history." - Rick Jordan

By Leaning into Its Past, Malta Is Shining a Light on Its Future | Condé Nast Traveler

"On my last day in Valletta I visited St. John's Co-Cathedral, a bombshell of Baroque expression with barrel-vaulted ceilings and gilded arches, to see The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist—a massive 12-by-17-foot canvas Caravaggio painted on-site in 1608 after his exile from Rome. In 2024 the cathedral added a new interactive exhibit explaining the Caravaggio–Malta connection and renamed the oratory the Caravaggio Wing; I ascended a stairway into a dark, confessional-like chamber to stand face-to-face with the painting's macabre details while projections animated the figures and illuminated each brushstroke, making the encounter an emotional journey that felt, fittingly, like the island's way of keeping the past alive while looking to the future." - Adam H. This Cathedral is a MUST!! I’ve visited a million churches but St. John’s is on my top 10 most beautiful in the world. It’s basically a museum when it comes to art. I “kinda” regretted not coming to mass, the more spiritual atmosphere seems so appropriate, but my schedule was tight. PURCHASE tickets in advance!! The live for pre-purchased tickets was only like 5-10 mins long. The last minute line was huge, instead. The Belfry requires reservations and separate tkt. The visits end around 15:00 (3PM). DO: Cover your shoulders: both sexes must do so. They can give you a ridiculous plastic shawl at the door, if you forgot that you are going to a church: modesty people! 😇 You don’t want to be that geek. Bermudas are ok, short shorts no. DON’T: Bring liquids other than a small bottle of water. Get ready to have your backpack inspected by security and wear it in front of you, also great to avoid pickpockets, although Malta is super safe, there’s always a bad apple 🍎

Book online to skip the queue. One of the best churches I've visited. It was a bit crowded probably as it was raining. Lost a star as audio guide kept needing to restart...same for 2 of us...but IMPRESSIVE!

Valletta is a lovely city and well worth your time. Beautiful streets, architecture, views, gardens. Lots of restaurants and cafe's. Cultural experiences if that's your thing. And don't miss the ferry to the three cities!

So much wonderful history preserved in one of the finest churches in the world. I go every time for the Caravaggio of course and glad to see the new interactive exhibition upstairs to explain the thought process and artistic journey. Worth a look if you need a whistle stop breakdown before going into see the real thing. It really helped me understand.

An absolutely stunning cathedral in the heart of Valletta. From the outside it looks quite simple, but the interior is breathtaking full of Baroque art, gold details, and incredible paintings. Don’t miss the famous Caravaggio masterpiece inside. The audio guide is very informative and worth it. A must-see in Malta!

Absolutely insane, never seen anything like this before. Anywhere you look you see something unique, the amount of history, the detail and the care of preservation are unreviled. The wait was long, but if you get your tickets online you can skip the main queue so I highly recommend doing that. Don't miss this opportunity if you're visiting Malta.

The opulence in the Cathedral is both incredible and sad (being aware of the relative poverty locally). It's easy to see how faith is inspired and the artwork on display and built into the cathedral is incredible. Staff will make sure that you see the Carrivaggio, but honestly, that's not the most interesting piece. Take time to look at the floors which mark the graves in the cathedral. One of the staff was kind enough to light up the chapel of relics and explain how they are used as part of mass for All Saints. It's absolutely worth the entrance fee to sit with the feeling of being very small indeed.

Absolutely breathtaking! St. John’s Co-Cathedral is one of the most stunning places I’ve ever visited. From the outside, it looks fairly modest, but the moment you step inside, you’re surrounded by incredible Baroque art, intricate gold details, and beautifully painted ceilings. Every corner tells a story, and the craftsmanship is simply extraordinary. The highlight for me was Caravaggio’s The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist — seeing it in person was a truly moving experience. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or art, this is an absolute must-see in Valletta. A masterpiece of Maltese heritage!
