Classic Sacramento Restaurants and Eateries to Try | Eater SF

"Stagecoach, open since 1978, has kitschy, western-themed décor and a Southern-leaning, massive breakfast menu. Most breakfasts are served with the choice of home fries or grits — buttered or fried — and homemade biscuits can sub for toast. Catfish nuggets, shrimp, and liver and onions can be had with your eggs and biscuits, as well as the standard bacon and sausage options. For fans of this maligned dish, they offer the only scrapple to be had on a menu in Sacramento. Saddle up." - Becky Grunewald

Although cozy and welcoming, it just looks a little too cluttered. I really can't say enough good things about the service. They're patient and helpful. I had a HUGE platter of biscuits and gravy. Who knew? As I looked around the restaurant, HUGE PORTIONS are deliciously standard. Service was extra fast as well. Take a peek at their menu. I took plenty of pictures. Don't forget to get a souvenir or two.

Google
First time here. Classic diner breakfast. Large selection of your classic breakfast options. Each day a variety of specialty pancakes. Tried 2 types of omelets. Cooked perfectly. Large portions. Pancake of the day was delish. Older establishment but what stood out was the service. From walking in the door to paying for the check every single person was phenomenal. Attentive, friendly, all the good things. I would come back here for breakfast anytime! Reasonable prices also. Dog friendly outside tables.

Google
Absolutely the beast breakfast restaurant in the area, the chicken fried "pork" is to die for, the "meat" gravy is the best I've had, the biscuits are light, fluffy and delish, the country potatoes are awesome, the service is great, the mimosa options are unlimited and the prices are more than reasonable, lower than most as a matter of fact. A+A+A+..

Just a mystery

Google
First time coming to stagecoach, I must say it was a great experience, I love the family vibe feeling. There was many things on the menu that I must go back and try, I got me a simple breakfast for my first visit and must say it was very delicious didn't have one thing over cooked or undercooked. Everything is decently priced and worth every penny. The lovely lady today was sweet and ready for the day to get busy which is great to hear she likes to stay busy. Definitely will be returning to this location .

Google
This place is amazing if you haven't been. I go a little crazy because they have alllll the good stuff (fried green tomatoes), but then I get so much food that I can feed my guy breakfast for a whole week. Also, eggs. I've been missing them (there under my gravy) because I refuse to hunt them down unless they were paired with Chicken Fried Steak. The staff are always great and so are the daily specials.

We went in on a Saturday morning. We were taken back by the outside due to image not being the exact location, it may be a AI photo. We Continued to dine in because someone suggested this place to us. As we sat down, we immediately saw other people eating and enjoying their food. Server brought our drinks out quickly. Took a little while to take our order but then our food came out in 10 minutes, so it worked itself out. We got the country fried pork with eggs and smothered potatoes, side of French toast and side of biscuits and gravy and we were full with left overs. Server had a great attitude. Thank you. We can’t wait to come back again.

Google
OMG this was our first time eating here and the food was amazing. Order the fried anything with the biscuits and gravy and your taste buds will be soo happy. I had the chicken fried pork chop, with biscuits and gravy. It was soooo delicious. And they serve mimosas. Going back again tomorrow before we leave town.😁

Google
The meal was wonderful. The portions were huge. We enjoyed the meal, the service and the price.

Yelp
This was my 3rd visit to the Sacramento location and I was so surprised they were open on the 4th of July! I brought my adult daughter (bakery owner) my two teenage grandchildren and my adult grandson who were visiting from out of town. (All big foodie types!) I believe I waited too long to post this review so I cannot recall what each of them ordered, but they were all so happy with the service (the waitstaff was on point!) presentation, the large variety of items, and the deliciousness of the food! We also loved the background music (upbeat, old-school soul!), and the general vibe of this cozy spot! Parking tends to be a tight squeeze, but I have always found a spot. Note: I tried the Elk Grove location a while back and was very disappointed with the food so I was initially hesitant to try this Florin location. I cannot believe the difference between the two locations! This location is 'hands-in-the-air' THE BEST!

Yelp
We've loved the Elk Grove location but today being a holiday they were closed. Sacramento location was open (with a sign on their door that said closing between 1-2pm.) Parking was easy and upon walking up we could see a nice shaded covered patio for outdoor seating. We walked in to a pretty busy TINY dining area with a small room off to the back. The walkway to get to this back room was a right squeeze as it was also a "server area" that was crowded with workers and bus tubs. We were stuck at a small table next to the restrooms next to a pile of unused chairs (extras or broken ones not sure.) we ordered rather quickly but food took a long time! (The server did let us know due to large parties food would take a little longer but we waited an hour for 2 meals. Service was quick to refill coffee and water and communicate wait times. Food was good, Biscuit was a bit heavy, potatoes were cooked crispy and seasoned well. Omelette was great but the cheese wasn't melted on top and service was decent until the end when the bill was dropped off and then we were seemingly forgotten about as the server never came back to collect the card. We had to get up and pay at the front and ask for boxes as no one checked on us after the bill drop. Over all the food was good, portions were great for the price, service was sufficient (until the end) but the place itself felt cramped and thrown together. We'll stick with EG.

Yelp
I've been going here for years. My now husband actually took me here early in our relationship. It was his hidden gem that he loved going to. We went last weekend and ordered some food. We both got poached eggs with our meals. I'm a newbie to the poached egg game but my husband is a pro. He makes them all of the time. Our food came and the eggs were ok but nothing to return to the cook. We also try not to make a fuss for issues when we go out to eat. As we were eating, the waitress came up with a new set of eggs because the chef wanted to make them better. They fixed the eggs without us even saying anything. We were shocked and impressed. Another set of eggs came out to make up for the issue. We were very thankful and appreciative of the restaurant's care and concern. Always great service and great food.

Yelp
So fire! Came in for breakfast today, called in my order and the person on the phone was amazing! Perfect customer service. Food was ready upon arrival and it was amazing. The southern flavors! We tried quite a bit, pancakes, bacon, eggs (UP), fries, potatoes with onion & peppers, red snapper, Philly Cheese Omelette, biscuit w/ gravy, and the country fried steak. Everything was amazing! Will definitely be back. To me the omelette was everything!
google avatar

Yelp
Home-style comfort food at its best. Generous portions. Visited here today for breakfast and had the veggie omelette. It was delicious. Our server was polite and attentive. The restaurant was lively. It's a good place to dine with friends and family.

Yelp
South Sac's greatest!! I treated my mom to brunch at Stagecoach for Mother's Day! My mom loves this place. I love the old Western feel of the restaurant. The staff were so kind and all smiles. Our server, Maddy, was nice and patient with answering our questions about the menu. It was breezy outside at the time when we went to eat, so, we decided to enjoy eating on the veranda. I ordered the partner #1 breakfast: country fried chicken, eggs, and butter grits, and my choice of side was a biscuit, I asked for gravy. My mom ordered country fried pork chops, rice with gravy, toasts, and french fries. We loved every bite of our meal! And had plenty for left overs to take home. I ordered their strawberry lemonade....which was soooooo good. Strawberry puree is included and tasted so fresh....I'm pretty sure it's made in house! Thanks Stagecoach for the great grub and friendly service! I look forward to return soon! :)

Yelp
First time here. I got the 4 egg and sausage, the food was good, but I only received 3 eggs. For the price paid, I am definitely not too happy about my missing egg.

Yelp
I had been hankering to try Stagecoach for years, and finally had a chance to recently. It was everything I thought it would be and more. Walking in I loved the decor and restaurant setup. Country kitschy decorations galor and rustic furniture help to complete my slice of Americana experience. To my delight the extensive senior breakfast menu was a deal heaven sent. You get a huge breakfast with coffee for just $14. Where can you get this kind of deal in our new era of inflation? I ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast and was stuffed at the end. The regular breakfast adds extra steak and egg and I bet it's quite a gutbuster. The chicken fried steak had a nice homemade cornmeal crust that makes it special over others I've had. Unfortunately the meat is a bit tough, maybe they compress the patty a bit too much. It wasn't the best I've had but it was decent. I love that they serve a full bowl of country gravy with it, you can never have enough gravy. The drop biscuit was big and delightful too, very fluffy and tasted great with the gravy and whipped butter. The home fries were good but costs extra if you add peppers and onions. The coffee is actually surprisingly good, not sure what brand they use but I had a second and third cup (step aside Yuban!). The wait staff was excellent and always on top of things and made sure to refill my coffee. The food came out fast even though it was pretty busy. I had a great experience and really felt that deep South vibe, look forward to coming back to try the fried catfish nuggets!

Yelp
On a Sunday Sacramento morning, our daughter visiting from the Bay Area, reminded us that she was looking forward to breakfast at Stagecoach Restaurant located on Florin Road, near Franklin. She was craving Southern style Chicken and Waffles. After circling the parking lot, which was full, a restaurant patron exited and we parked next to the restaurant. We were greeted immediately upon entering and our short wait allowed us to view the interesting cabin like interior adorned with pictures of stagecoaches and framed Christian messages. The menu provided many food options and our wait person Madison patiently answered our questions and provided a few restaurant favorites. We ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken Breasts that included two eggs, and waffle ($18.95); French Toast Combination that included two eggs and 1/2 ham slice ($16.95); and Southern Fried Catfish nuggets, 1/2lb. ($8.95). While we waited for our order, various wait staff came by to refresh our coffee and water. The food was homestyle comfort food. We preferred the savory dishes (i.e., chicken fried chicken and fried catfish) over the sweet dishes (i.e., French Toast and Waffles). The portions are large and the two orders, along with a side, was enough for three people. We are thankful to have visited Stagecoach Restaurant and now know where to go when the craving for Chicken and Waffle type food strikes. Food - 3 Service - 5 Ambiance - 4

Yelp
If you live in Sacramento and haven't been here, you are truly missing out on some delicious home cooked food! Breakfast / Lunch -soul food - all cooked with so much love! I swear they don't skimp on anything ! Weve been coming here since we were kids, and now bring our own ! They never disappoint

Yelp
#1. Chicken fried steak, white gravy w/ country potatoes, bell pep & onions, over-med eggs, blueberry muffin. #2. Beef chicken fried steak, SOS gravy w/ country potatoes, bell pep & onions, scrambled eggs, drop biscuit. Each meal feeds TWO PEOPLE. Portions were gigantic! Both dishes were good & comforting. Place is very homey. Waitress was wonderful! Staff were friendly & very hands on. Check was about $50+$10 tip. Def worth it!

Yelp
Great breakfast and lunch options. Southern style food and atmosphere. Service was great, food is awesome come hungry portions are bigger than most.

Ju L.

Yelp
Pros: Friendly waitstaff. Shaded outdoor seating. Large portions. Southern chicken wings are a must try. Cons: Biscuits were too dry and heavy. Grits were not buttery enough.

Yelp
I have been coming here ever since I was a little boy and I have yet to be unsatisfied. The only time the food was terrible was back in 2018 when I ordered a half young chicken and the chicken was terrible. They have updated their menu and made it smaller which I think is great because then the cooks can focus more on their main dishes. The food is excellent, the service was superb and the ambiance is nice and cozy. I stopped by after the rain kicked me off the job site and ordered the farmer's breakfast, it was very filling and delicious. It was nice, warm and cozy inside and the waiter was very friendly! This is my favorite diner in California and it happens to be down the street from me!

Yelp
Oh Stagecoach, how I've missed you. Finally managed to get back here and now that I'm old AF I can order from the Senior menu! First off, the coffee was really good and fresh. Sort of rare for this kind of place. I ordered the Senior #6, consisting of a waffle, a sausage patty and a fried egg (perfect over medium). All so good! My wife got the very tasty chicken fried steak and eggs with buttered grits and a biscuit with gravy, which she barely touched, so yay leftovers. We got one of their blueberry muffins to share and while small and basic it was quite yummy. It's such a friendly and welcoming place with a nice gospel music background, and our server was fantastic. We're not going to wait so damn long to go back.

Neelab S.

Yelp
Truly one of the best in town! We were in town for my kid's SAT this weekend and went here for breakfast! The service is phenomenal, they are very friendly and welcoming. Niya and others constantly checked on us incase we needed anything ! Food is fresh and yummy! Big portions. They sanitize every booth after use which we loved and made us feel safe! Family feeling ambiance! We will definitely come back here when in town!

Yelp
I came to the location on Mother's Day, and I was greeted by friendly staff. I was able to order online and get my food quickly while I was carrying my child and I was given a free coffee. The environment was so friendly I wanted to stay but unfortunately, due to having my child, I opted out of eating at home.

Belee N.

Yelp
Best breakfast place ever! I'm not here for fancy decor or instagram-able pics! I'm here for good food...the best food! My go to orders- French toast, shrimp & grits, and biscuits & gravy!! I also love their country fried chicken, catfish nuggets, and omelettes. But honestly I've never had a bad/mediocre meal there! Everything is SOOOOO GOOD!

Zachary T.

Yelp
Overall decent food. I wouldn't get the buttered grits or drop biscuits. Those weren't that great.
google avatar

Kahn H.

Yelp
Great food .Great service. Best breakfast in town in my opinion. Highly recommended
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
The steak was really good as well as the gravy. The potatoes were a little too dry for my liking. I had a side of fruit. And the biscuit wasn't a fav for me either. Coffee was not that strong as I'd like. Over all the main entree was the focal point. I still recommend it here. Also it was busy as always so it took a minute to get my order
google avatar

George G.

Yelp
A-1 Food Huge Menu/ A-1 Service! And they got Motown Sounds playing all day. South Sac must!
google avatar

Zoua V.

Yelp
My girls took me there for my birthday. All I wanted was waffle. The waffle itself is very good but a little disappointed in the strawberry. It was can strawberry and too wet. The strawberries make the waffle soggy. I couldn't eat the middle of the waffle which is super soggy. One thing I like is the vegetable omelette. The serving serve is huge. Service is good.
google avatar

Yelp
Old school diner. Classic hangover fix for sure. Perhaps one of the last classic diner breakfasts left
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was top notch! Service was amazing. Food portions where great for pricing. Food was delicious! Thank you!

Yelp
I love this place! Great staff and great food ! Always a good vibe here ! My favorite is the shrimp and grits their waffles and also the biscuits and gravy
google avatar

Ann L.

Yelp
Just another one of those old school vibe places with great service and some pretty darn good food. Breakfast all day is always a good find especially in a family run business. The kitschy decor is just charming and there are plenty of booths to hunker down in while you wait for your home cooked food to arrive hot and tasty. We split the difference between breakfast and lunch and ordered a tuna melt and eggs Benedict. Both plates offered plenty of good bites. Our server was on the spot and very personable. One of our favorite local places in Elk Grove.
google avatar

Alfred R.

Yelp
This is such a good restaurant! It's very homey, it is a black owned business not that that necessarily matters but it's good to see people of color running a successful business here in Sacramento. I love this place.
google avatar

Scott D.

Yelp
Little spot with lots of decor for the whole chuck wagon life. Decent, welcoming spot. Greetings and plenty of descriptions and options told by the waitresses. Few days before at work had some conversations with coworkers and they mentioned the spot. Not hearing of it before and randomly driving by we stopped for breakfast. Went with the vegetable omelette with home potatoes, pepper and onion. It was delicious. Even took the rest for a bite later. My wife went with the eggs, bacon and fried grits. Yes fried grits. Cooked in a smaller pan so they can cut them and frie them up. Served with molasses for dipping. Maple is a great choice if your not familiar with the taste of molasses. Still had some grits left over took them home too. My son tried them later and ate em up and liked them. They have a pretty big/good menu of items to try. Plenty of seating in or outside.
google avatar

Jackson T.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've reviewed this place. I've been back a few times since my last review and everything is still good. Food still has great portions and it is still always crowded for brunch. The staff are still mostly the same and they handle the customers well. I will be back again.
google avatar

Jasmine C.

Yelp
I really enjoy the food. They told us the wait was longer than what we actually waited, which was great. We had great customer service and it was fast. I got eggs Benedict and my boyfriend got French toast, it was all very delicious. Price is what you would expect. I would love to change the decor. Lol.The decor has old school pictures featuring white cowboys. They also have Mexican mariachi sombreros. Kinda all over. I think it would be really cool if they hang up some old and new photos of Black cowboys.
google avatar

Enoch M.

Yelp
Kudos to this restaurant for not making breakfast boring. There is alwaya variety and they are not lazy in upping the service in the mornings. Thank you for the great food and service as always!
google avatar

Yelp
Very good service food is very good been coming here for a few years God bless the owners and his staff
google avatar

Crystal D.

Yelp
Excellent experience! Wonderful service, delicious food, and accommodating for our kids. We were seated right away and our server took initiative to bring a sling for our car seat. Service was fast and the quality of the food excellent. I had the big boy breakfast with a side of fried green tomatoes (tasted like home) and my husband had the apple sausage and eggs while my daughter had kid's pancakes. Huge portions, well made. Highly recommend:)
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
The music and food equal an amazing explosion of flavor on your taste buds!!! Staff were super sweet and fast!!! I'm telling you the food is loaded with flavor and it felt like family cooked it just for us!!!! Sorry no pics it was so good and the oldies had me grooving in my seat!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
My first time here at Stagecoach on Florin Rd. The portion of food portions wasn't much and tasted okay? Service was good. My main complaint is I went there by myself and spent almost $30.00 on a basic breakfast! Wow that's a first for me! So just FYI before going to Stagecoach on Florin Rd
google avatar

Jourdan J.

Yelp
Nice little homie spot, nothing fancy. Service okay. Food decent priced. I got a hot tea, veggie omelet with only two eggs instead of 4 and some home style potatoes with pepper & onions & some toast. Portion sizes huge so i'm glad i only did the two egg omelet. Overall I enjoyed my meal & will definitely be back since they have a pretty expansive menu.
google avatar

Martin R.

Yelp
So from driving past this spot looks super busy and the reviews are 50/50 I save you time and money keep driving and spend your money elsewhere the only thing good was the service but the food on the other hand was trash I got the Porkchops and house potatoes and eggs looked but not taste at all like they ran out of seasoning my daughter made the mistake of getting the loco moco looked frozen poop over rice I told ask for something else she attempted to eat gaw dam nasty taste we both tried it. Hey you win some and you loose and we lost but a lesson was learned and that was not to come back
google avatar

Arthur j W.

Yelp
Christian, don't let her go. She is a fabulous person, please keep her at Stagecoach on Florin road, Stagecoach she is great.
google avatar

Africa F.

Yelp
Best local breakfast spot. Traditional food and consistent chefs. Great service, food comes on time and it's all good food. Love going on weekends. Great for everyone.
google avatar

Jessica O.

Yelp
A year ago, I gave them five stars without question, but unfortunately the quality of the food has gone way down. Everything was really sweet (I got the biscuits and gravy with eggs and sausage. It was all very sweet.) and the potatoes were very under seasoned. Saving grace for food was my wife's French toast. The French toast was delicious! Maybe just stick to sweet food here now? The service is still amazing though. The servers are SO nice and very attentive.

Ozella M.

Yelp
Slow service but worth the wait! Large portions. Decent prices. Good place for family dining.
google avatar

Kendra D.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. My husband introduced me to Stagecoach when we first started dating back in 2015 and I have loved it ever since. He has been going there since he moved from the Bay Area. You instantly feel like family with the warm welcome from the staff. Most of them know my husband and got to know him pretty well over the years and embraced me just the same! The food is delicious, we usually go when I'm pregnant and don't too much feel like cooking, so I get sides. I love their grits and Turkey sausage. And also the waffles are good too. My husband has tried just about everything there! The parking is not that great, it's pretty small and inside seating is kind of tight. But it gives you that old school southern feeling which is pretty cool. Just like eating at grandma's house on a Sunday morning with the family! I Love this place.
google avatar

Reyna R.

Yelp
Its been many years since we had this got Friendly service, bomb pancakes, great French toast...... the chicken fried steak and country potatoes not so good. Both were actually gross highly recommend no one orders them. Cant even explain the taste. Potatoes were undercooked. Tasted like frozen country potatoes ive tried once . I was bummed out that we even spent $75 here and we were trying to decide between black bear diner and Dennys, either of those choices would have been better in my opinion....People hype this place up too much. It will be many years til I try it again. Also water has a weird taste.
google avatar

C D.

Yelp
Friendly, comfortable, very good food, variety of customers, parking close to restaurant.

Honey B.

Yelp
Walking into this place was pure nostalgic. 30 years ago, I had a friend who worked here, so we would frequent the establishment. We'll I should've stayed back in the future because the food SUCKED! I have never had such hard to stir grits in my life! It needed a cup of water and some salt. The chicken fried steak had so much breading and a sliver of beef. Oh, let's talk about those old a$$ potatoes they used from the day before and added some uncooked potatoes. Who uses only red only Frank's Red Hots? Get some Chulula or Tapatio if you can't afford TABASCO! Let me not forget to tell you how uncomfortable the booths are. I'm 140lbs very average height, and I could feel the wood on my a$$. It was so rough! Go have breakfast at Cracker Barrel, Denny's, or Ihop half the price, and you'll get consistent food at least. I like supporting small businesses, but this ain't it!
google avatar

Kyle R.

Yelp
Best chicken fried steak in the country. If you saw my review of the Elk Grove location you'll see that I was less than pleased with my last experience with Stagecoach. With a trip to Sac this morning I decided to go to the original off Florin. This location never disappoints, the service and ambiance is significantly better than the strip mall in Elk Grove. But I was mostly just happy to have good tasting gravy and a steak that wasn't as thick as a toothpick. I have pictures attached of my wonderful meal this morning. Thanks for the breakfast dopamine hit.

Umeka C.

Yelp
The best chicken fried chicken. Genius to add sn item for those who don't eat beef. What is unique about The stagecoach is the hsve something for everyone. There are always options. Eating at the stagecoach is like eating with family. The music in the background the conversations busseling around makes you feel like you at a family gathering. The staff is always friendly.
