Winston-Salem’s Mr. Barbecue Reopens Using Wood-Fired Pits - Eater Carolinas

"Only a few local ’cue spots besides Mr. Barbecue maintain the tradition of cooking pork exclusively over wood-burning pits, including Clark’s in Kernersville, Real Q in Winston-Salem, and Stamey’s in Greensboro, according to The Campaign for Real Barbecue." - Eric Ginsburg

Hands down the greatest Brunswick Stew I've ever had! I absolutely love the comfy and homey country style of the decor! Gave me a nostalgic feeling of my grandmother's kitchen as they shared the same chairs! The service was absolutely delightful and the food was DELICIOUS! The prices had me floored! We fed a large group of 14 for right at $100 with plenty to take hoem for another meal! We will always make this a mandatory stop every visit to Greensboro!

NC BBQ Bucket List: Stamey’s in Greensboro (Gate City Blvd Location). Stamey’s has been doing BBQ since 1930. The OG location is long gone, having been replaced by the Drive through location on Gate City Blvd in 1953. This is Lexington style, cooked over wood and served with vinegar based sauces only. I had a chopped plate, served with hush puppies and red slaw, with a side of Brunswick stew. The chopped pork was excellent and typical of what you get from a joint that’s been doing BBQ for over 94 years. The sauces (which they call “dip”) are mild and “smokehouse hot,” which despite the name has a slight kick to it but isn’t overly spicy. After sampling both, I went with the smokehouse hot. The Brunswick stew had butter beans, corn, potatoes, and field peas in it and was delicious. Washed everything down with a house made sweet tea (half and half is my jam) and didn’t have room for dessert. So a large BBQ plate, tea, and Brunswick stew was $16…so it’s a bit of an inflation fighter too. Overall 4.5 snouts, 🐽🐽🐽🐽 definitely worth a visit when in Gate City.

WOW! The slaw was awesome on this sandwich. Perfectly complemented the pork. Great taste, the way it should be.

This was my first time time eating here in this iconic barbeque restaurant since driving a dump truck over fifty years ago in the spring and summer of 1973in the city of Greensboro. At that time the restaurant was located on the other side of the parking lot and there is a picture of it on the entryway wall. That is the only difference I saw during this trip. I was still greeted by cheerful, courteous, friendly and smiling faces when I arrived and the barbecue salad that I ordered was served hot, fresh from the kitchen and in a very large stainless steel bowl. I can also recommend any of the barbeque plates, sandwiches, trays anyway it is prepared, a chicken plate, cheeseburger, a hotdog and don't forget to try the peach cobbler with ice cream.

Google
Service was quick, food was delicious. The hushpuppies were light, crisp and freshly fried. Pulled pork was amazing as always. Brunswick stew was perfect on this chilly night. Great food for the price. Our family of four averaged $12/ person with muliple sides and sodas.

Google
We love BBQ!!! To hear that Stamey’s has been in business for almost 100 years is amazing and we knew we had to try it! So when driving through Winston Salem, we had to stop by. We had a great lunch! We enjoyed the sliced bbq, chopped bbq, hushpuppies, chicken fingers, and Mac n cheese. The bbq did not have a smokey flavor or a crusty bark. The sauce is a red vinegar but is thin and light. The bbq paired well with Stamey’s tangy reddish slaw. Our family of 5 ate for $80 (including tip) which is unheard of these days! Stop by and enjoy some bbq!!

Google
Simply delicious. It truly is classic bbq that’s done well. One of our favorite bbq restaurants ever. The service is fast, waitstaff is friendly, and everything is clean.

Google
The waitress could not speak English well. Our order was messed up when it was delivered to the table. We had to send stuff back. The BBQ slaw was nothing to write home about. The chicken was good but gave me a stomach ache after I left the restaurant. This was the first time eating at this restaurant. I can say it will be my last. I don't know how they have stayed in business 95 years. Maybe it used to be better. I was disappointed in the delivery, accuracy and food quality. The man at register was unfriendly and acted like he really didn't want to be working or wait on a customer.

Yelp
I'm home for the holidays, and my family and I stopped in for dinner and the food was delicious. It was so nostalgic! I'm sure with all of the "BBQ restaurants" out here and now that everyone is a "Pit Master" this place will be called out, as not as being good or great BBQ, but after 93 years and still counting some of the new BBQ restaurants don't have the staying power as a Stamey's! I've been eating at Stamey's since I was a child, and I'm very biased when it comes to comparing foods outside of NC to my local favs. I say all of that to say, Stamey's may not be for everyone, but I still love it. Now, on to the food. The hot dog was just as I remembered ("The Bomb") and the "Q" and BBQ Slaw was delicious, and the crinkle fries was hot and fresh out of the grease. It felt so good to be home the service was great, food was just as I remembered, and it was nice and chill inside! It's definitely one of those restaurants that is a staple here in Greensboro, and a must try. No frills, just sit down and enjoy some good ole NC BBQ.

Yelp
If you have dietary restrictions and want BBQ, Stamey's is the place for you! No flavor or seasoning to be found. Just bland. I didn't take a picture because why? Years ago I enjoyed Stamey's for what it was and if I'm not mistaken they were a little more tastier back then. I ordered the combo plate with sliced pork and 1/4 chicken with Mac and cheese and collard greens as the side. The greens are can, the Mac and cheese is watery. Sadly, Stamey's is nationally known for its BBQ but this is by far the best NC has to offer.

Yelp
When a BBQ restaurant has been open since 1930, you know you're in for a treat! Quick, friendly service from the waitress as she delivered the slow smoked pork. I'm a fan of the traditional western NC vinegar sauce, which is also used in their slaw. Not many places serve Brunswick stew, so I enjoyed it. I could have eaten my weight in hush puppies. Also got to meet Mr. Stamey, who was real friendly. Great experience!!

Yelp
Congratulations to this storied NC barbecue operation for its founder's, C. Warner Stamey, induction into the first class of the North Carolina Bar-B-Que Hall Of Fame in early March. Also in the first group was Pete Jones of Skylight Inn, his grandson Sam Jones now operating both Skylight Inn and Sam Jones BBQ in Winterville, Wayne "Honey" Monk of Lexington BBQ, Charles Hursey of Hursey's BBQ in the Burlington area, Kent Bridges of Alston Bridge's BBQ in Shelby, and Steve and Gerri Grady of Grady's BBQ near Goldsboro! If you get a chance to research these folks and their businesses you will learn much of what went into making both NC BBQ - both Eastern and Lexington styles - the jewel it is! Congratulation to them all!

Yelp
Well the food wasn't that tasteful. It could have used a lot more seasoning and the bbq sauce was watery not thick so that didn't help at all. The waitress is why I gave it a rating of three. She was very pleasant. I enjoyed the one on battleground way better. I will try this place again. The atmosphere was pleasant. Overall I must say I have to go back and try something different just to see . The people there were also pleasant. It was just the food I was disappointed in . Otherwise I would have left with a smile

Yelp
Excellent BBQ. The kids are picky about BBQ and they LOVED it! The hush puppies were crispy outside and perfectly soft inside.

Yelp
We were in Greensboro for a day trip (errands) and decided to try Stamey's. We had been hearing it mentioned for many many years, as my wife's grandmother used to stop in here when she came to "the big city" for occasional shopping. The physical setting is nice for a BBQ joint. Spacious dining rooms, cool in the summer heat. Service was attentive and pleasant. The food was about what I would expect from a typical barbecue restaurant, with a few quibbles. Being the fat boy that I am, I ordered a chopped pork platter (comes with one side, I chose collards) and also a chopped smoke chicken sandwich. I knew I did not need both, but when am I going to be back again? My wife chose a chopped pork sandwich with fries and an order of brunswick stew and hush puppies. The pork was a little dry in both cases, and was closer to minced than chopped. The two sauces provided (mild and spicy) did not carry much flavor but did help with the needed moisture, along with the slaw on the sandwich. (That slaw was perfect slaw for a barbecue sandwich.) The flavor of the meat was as good as I have found in a restaurant in recent memory, but no better. Not much smoke that I could detect, but decent pork flavor. The chicken sandwich was a pleasure, with a lot of smoke flavor and good texture. The buns for the sandwiches held up well to the meat and added sauce-- so many places use cheaper buns that disintegrate before you finish, so this is a detail to be noted about Stamey's. Quantities of meat on both sandwiches were generous. The stew was very tasty. This is one of my wife's litmus tests on a new BBQ place, and it passed. Lots of veggies, deep flavor in the broth. The abundant hush puppies seemed house made and had a good corn meal crust, could have benefited from a little butter. The fries were an afterthought I think, not anything to think about after eating one or two. The collards were acceptable (not outstanding) to me but my wife found them bitter and lacking any real flavor from simmering with pork or side meat. All in all, it was an okay lunch. I would stop in again if in the area.

Yelp
Well this is supposedly the best of barbecue here in Greensboro North Carolina since I'm here for the first time. I ordered the chopped and a slice barbecue pork it was okay. No wow but decent. The New Brunswick stew was something I never heard of and it was ok. A little watery if not sour tasting and the way they make their coleslaw for the pork and chicken dinner was a bit on the vinegar side than creamy. I've never heard of blueberry cobbler which was decently good. I probably would order this if it had ice cream had I known. Service was actually pretty good Linda was the server and she was pretty attentive and informative. The ambience was busy since we came during lunch time and at a donald trump rally. Otherwise it's ok. I was curious why this was the best barbecue it's okay nothing spectacular but nothing poor.

Yelp
A staple for BBQ if you are in the area don't miss out. You can't go wrong with Stamey's

Yelp
Over the years, the food has been good and consistent. Clean spacious restaurant. Seat yourself, pay at front counter, attentive waits.. I am not a BBQ expert but I love their sandwiches and slaw and baked beans. The BBQ chicken is very very good. Good fries and hush puppies. They have altered the menu over the years with new things, e.g. collards.. The cobbler and ice cream are worth a visit. 2nd location on Battleground.

Yelp
We are Stamey's BBQ fans living in Texas! My husband is a Greensboro native, and it's his first stop every trip home. But with a job and three kids, he doesn't get home as often as he'd like, so we order Stamey's sauce off the website and they ship it to us in Dallas so he can always get his taste of home! Although I'm partial to Texas bbq, even I'll admit that Stamey's is good. But even more than that, I've developed a love and loyalty for it too, just because it's a company of good people who will go to great lengths to serve their customers both near and far! BTW, my husband flies in Friday to spend his moms birthday weekend with his family, so I'm sure you'll get a big group order from them!

Yelp
Probably more like 3.5 stars for me, if we can ever convince Yelp to allow half-star ratings. I took a spot at the counter and was surprised at how long it took for one of the waitresses who kept passing me to ask what I'd like to drink. After all, the restaurant was far from busy. The waitress that finally chose to cover the counter also seemed to have trouble figuring out my order, though it was far from complicated: a chopped pork sandwich with barbecue slaw, and a hot dog all the way including barbecue slaw. I had to explain the hot dog three times! After that experience, things got better. The food showed up quickly, and I was impressed by the amount of meat in the barbecue sandwich. The meat was a little drier than I like but a few splashes of sauce helped. The hot dog was simple yet delicious. And a nice glass of half-sweet tea matched up well with the food. The service grade took another hit when I went to the counter to pay, for the clerk there was as cold and unfriendly as a block of ice. What happened to making patrons feel welcome and appreciated? Instead, I think I was dealing with a zombie. The food was good enough to go back, so I'll try it again, but Stamey's could stand to improve the customer experience at this particular location.

Yelp
Ran to try this plate out after recently seeing Mark Wiens came to make a youtube video about this barbecue restaurant. The restaurant is located in a great place right beside the Greensboro coliseum. I enjoyed trying both the barbecue and chicken sandwich along with hush puppies and fries. I prefer crispier fries but the hush puppies were nice and crispy on the outside. The slaw they add on the sandwich was delicious as well as the barbecue vinegar sauce they had to pour over the meats. Overall the barbecue had a nice smokey flavor and the chicken wasn't dry at all. I made sure to try the apple ice-cream cobbler. I really liked it, I would have preferred more crust on the top of the cobbler. Great place for the price!

Chinita C.

Yelp
Quite possibly the worst barbecue I've ever had. First the food came out about 3 minutes after we ordered it. Which is definitely a red flag. It was all lukewarm with no flavor what so ever. The baked beans tasted like they opened a can of pork and beans and poured them in a bowl. The chopped barbecue didn't have a taste and didn't have any barbecue sauce. When you ask for barbecue sauce, the only options are hot sauce and two watery version of something that definitely isn't barbecue sauce. They just need to shut down really. This is definitely not a barbecue spot.

Yelp
Came here due to a recommendation right around the time of a concert across the street. Most of the parking lot was full due to them charging for concert parking, but luckily they let us park to eat. Waited in line to be seated, but it went by fairly quick. The service and waitress was great and the food was served quickly, but overall it was just ok. The coleslaw is vinegar based, the pork was average and the collard greens were actually delicious with great flavor. I had hoped for the food to be more unique, but overall the experience was good and the food served it's purpose!

Yelp
The food is excellent!! The prices are good and not overpriced!!! Service was excellent!!! Atmosphere was great!!
google avatar

Shrek Fan F.

Yelp
The service was good, the environment was nice, and the food came fast, but the food wasn't that great. I keep hearing good things about this restaurant and that this is the holy grail of BBQ in Greensboro, but I strongly disagree. I was not impressed with this BBQ and have had better before. The BBQ lacked flavor and it just wasn't good.

Yelp
Overstuffed Barbecue Pork Sandwich with piping hot hush puppies and a refreshing Southern style sweet tea. Different from Eastern North Carolina Whole Hog Cooked Low and Slow Barbecue. Stamey's Greensboro Barbecue is in the Lexington Barbecue class category of Pork Shoulder. Stamey's Barbecue is in a different category of North Carolina Barbecue that you must try. The many styles of North Carolina Pork Barbecues are distinct recipes and all are excellent and must be tried to appreciate each and every style of cooking North Carolina Barbecue. Stamey's iconic style of award winning pork barbecue is in a class by itself which is delicious. I have eaten here for many years, it stands the test of time, and the barbecue is consistently of the highest quality.
google avatar

Brad L.

Yelp
Wanted to treat Minnesota guests to some good Southern barbecue, so asked one of the staff at Riding High Harley, and they recommended Stamey's. Despite Erik S's low review, we decided to give it a try. I opted for sliced pork, slathered chicken, hush puppies, and slaw. The pork was good, but needed a little seasoning. I did like the sauce on the chicken, and both meats were plenty juicy. The hushpuppies were fine, though one of our guests said the ones from the old grist mill at the fair were better. The barbecue slaw was a nice change of pace. Service was plenty good and prices were reasonable, but with the limited menu, I don't see a return visit any time soon.
google avatar

Nancy T.

Yelp
Have been eating here for years. It is a tradition when coming to Greensboro for the ACC tournament. We both had barbecued chicken and chopped pork. I particularly like the red slaw they have in the Piedmont and Stameys does it right. Located right across from the Coliseum.
google avatar

Brandon H.

Yelp
My second time stopping in and this is definitely one of my new hotspots for lunch from the office. I've been getting the chopped bbq sandwich with fries and a milkshake chocolate and Oreo blended. Place has a classic feel to it as you can see the rich 95 years of business and history that Stamey's BBQ has had in Greensboro. Believe it or not, prior to his presidency, Donald Trump actually dined in at this very same Stamey's. Moreover, the list of high profile, presidential patrons goes back decades! Definitely give Stamey's a chance, quality food, affordable prices & waitress so far have been amazing too.
google avatar

Thomas B.

Yelp
Hey my hat is doing. shawn You guys have helped me with locality. Linda and fighting are good.

Tiffany A.

Yelp
Stamey's BBQ was good but a limited menu. Mostly pulled pork, which was very flavorful. I was looking forward to the hush puppies, but they were just OK. They needed a little more seasoning in the breading. We had the cherry cobbler and the peach cobbler, and both were delicious. Definitely leave room for the cobbler! The service was friendly.
google avatar

Tina M.

Yelp
Great Lexington style BBQ! Nice clean place. There's a quaint diner counter as well as regular seating. Fast friendly service. I got the chopped BBQ Plate with slaw and hush puppies. It was all great! Their vinegar style sauce is perfect!! My husband got the chicken and BBQ plate and said the chicken was delicious. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Yelp
I ended up going here towards the end of the day and it wasn't very crowded. The service was pleasant and I was quickly seated. I ended up ordering the Quarter Chicken Platter and the Peach Cobbler for dessert. The Quarter Chicken Platter is a really good deal and came with a nice slab of chicken and pile of their classic shredded pork. My real issue was that it was a lukewarm and a bit dry. I think because it was a slow day the food was not moving quick leaving it to sit for a while. I'm pretty sure if it was fresh the quality would have been a lot better. It came with hushpuppies and coleslaw as well. I really enjoyed the coleslaw as it was classic North Carolina style. The hushpuppies had a similar fate as with the meat--lukewarm and not as fresh. However, still good and I can imagine if it were fresh how much different it would have been. This place is geared towards turning out large groups and moving food out as soon as possible. So, if you happen to go when it's not busy the quality of the food can be amiss.

Yelp
When I went to the counter to pay, the clerk there was as beautiful and sweeter than ever. Making patrons like me feel welcome and appreciated! He was super friendly, energetic, and amazing. 100% will return!!!!! My father is a Buddhist

Chuck R.

Yelp
Good food, Generous portions; always fast friendly service. Live the updated decor at the Battleground restaurant.

Ashley Y.

Yelp
My family and I used to love Stamey's. We don't get to Greensboro much anymore but we ate here tonight and it was the biggest disappointed. The bbq was very fatty and it didn't even taste the same. The fries tasted like grease, it was awful. We ended up giving it to our dogs. $48 for food we ended up giving to our dogs! Sorry Stamey's we won't be back.

Bob G.

Yelp
You can taste the 85 years of smokin' excellence in every bite! Stamey's has been a staple in Greensboro for decades for great food, service, and ambiance provided by the stellar staff. I had a question about my bill and the manager came out to review it personally and make corrections. 10/10
google avatar

Russell M.

Yelp
Not a fake review. I had lunch there with a friend. I kept it positive and didn't stray to negativity. You have great ice. Let me know if you want a thorough review of the pork plate with beans and hush puppies I had.
google avatar

Melissa H.

Yelp
The Brunswick stew is good, the chopped pork is good but the hush puppies are average or below average. I like my hush puppies sweeter. The service is great. Very fast and efficient. The prices are decent also.

Nick C.

Yelp
In short, Stamey's Barbecue is a perfect lunch spot. The food, service, and ambiance check all the right boxes. Stamey's is Greensboro's premier barbecue joint, and you'd be hard-pressed to find better barbecue in all of North Carolina. Stamey's dedication to quality is why it has been a Greensboro staple for 90+ years. The pork plate is my top choice, but I often order the garden salad so I don't feel guilty about eating the legendary peach cobbler after my meal! If you've never dined at Stamey's, I assume you're either new to the area or visiting Greensboro. To eat at Stamey's is to eat like a local. It has been family-owned for 90+ years, and they take care of their staff. I'll happily be a patron for as long as I'm able to eat barbecue!

Grant M.

Yelp
5/5 Best Barbecue around authentic wood pit top notch service excellent establishment overall

Yelp
Awesome Lexington style BBQ every time. I went to this restaurant for years when I lived in central NC. We live in AZ now and miss our NC BBQ very much. I smoke my own pork shoulders now and have a great sauce recipe reminiscent of Stameys but we still go at least once when we visit NC.
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
Friends told us about Stamey's, and we are glad they did! It's a great introduction to this style of BBQ. The sauce was great, the pork tasty, and the hushpuppies were yummy. Friendly service staff that made us feel welcomed. It will be one of our go to places.

Nightsky311 ..

Yelp
March 9th 11:30ish no greetings or feeling of being welcomed when I entered. Honestly probably the worst bbq joint I've been to. Ordered Togo and the man at the counter was pissy and just hated life acted like he didn't want me their. The hush puppies on both plates was bland and cold, Mac and cheese definitely been sitting out or was from last night. The only two plus sides was an abundance of really bad tasting food and the cheerwine tasting good.
google avatar

Kong L.

Yelp
I was in a run and stopped by the drive-thru to grab a bite to eat on the road. I usually get the BBQ pork plate but I figure that'll be hard to eat while I drive. I opt for the BBQ sandwich combo instead. It came with a side of fries and sweet tea. The sandwich was amazing! Holy buckets! Best pulled pork sandwich I have ever tasted! I've never at anything this good before. The pork was tender with just enough smoke, topped with a later of coast slaw. The crispy and chunky fries complimented it well. Also, the sweet tea was on point. Hands down! Respect! That was an amazing meal!
google avatar

Desiree D.

Yelp
small, but right to the point menu. insanely cheap prices. good service. quick service. the large bbq chicken plate ...is HUGE. i could have shared, but i am a pig and here i am. i took half of it home. the bbq and its sauce is so sweet here, but has a sour finish. not expecting that at all, but i think this bbq tasted even better hours later. the chicken itself is JUICY. fresh. moist. plump. i loved every bite. the slaw is incredibly tangy and the side portion was too big - i think they give too much on the plate, i couldnt finish it. its just not that good by itself. i think would go better on a sandwhich. hushpuppies were addicting, but dry. i ended up dipping them into the bbq sauce. peach crumble with ice cream is sweet as hell, but tasty. doesnt even need the ice cream.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Some may find it useless to ask my opinion on barbecue because I'm a native Texan and Texas style BBQ always wins in my book. Still, I was impressed with Stamey's. I'm always wary of pulled pork sandwiches because I've always found them too dry for my taste. Today, my pulled pork sandwich was juicy with the right amount of vinegar - not super tart but still flavorful. I did the combo with a side of fries, but next time I'll choose the hush puppies - loved them. We took the peach cobbler to go and I'm still full from my meal so I'll eat it later- pretty sure it'll be delish! There is a drive thru option available and 2 outdoor tables with benches, if you are inclined to avoid indoor dining.

Yelp
I had a great moment at Stamey's today. I was having a bad morning. Went there for lunch. My waitress was amazing. I sat at the bar got a sandwich and some cobbler. She was so polite and talked to me. Just made be feel so much better. The food was great. The blackberry cobbler was amazing. I believe her name was Cherin or Cher. Go there for lunch try the cobbler and sit in her section

Yelp
Great pork sandwich with slaw, plus tasty collards! Very courteous service. An enjoyable and affordable meal!

Yelp
I was getting food for a family of a friend that had passed away. The employee I believe may had been the asst manager was so helpful. He helped me decide the correct amount needed. The order was ready for pickup when he stated it would be. I love the BBQ but not a fan of the slaw. Highly recommend!

Sharon W.

Yelp
When we go to Stameys the wait staff is always nice and fast with our order. The food is always good! Stameys is like family! Going home for a welcoming meal.

Jeffrey P.

Yelp
My family has been going to stameys for years. The food is great, it's quick and inexpensive. Chopped pork with spicy dip is my go to and the Brunswick stew is great as well.

Harold C.

Yelp
My wife and I make it a point to stop at Stamey's every time we drive through Greensboro on our way to Charlotte to see our grandchildren. .Excellent BBQ!!!! Fast friendly service!!!! And they don't rush us out the door... My wife grew up in Burlington, her brother lived in Greensboro after graduating from Chapel Hill; so we frequently bought large family meals from Stamey's..... Besides great food, Stamey's is part of our family stories and memories..... The world wouldn't be the same without Stamey's...

Brandt B.

Yelp
Stameys is some of the best bbq in not only Greensboro but the whole state of North Carolina. We thoroughly enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and customer service they offered. Some good food at good prices. Would recommend the chopped bbq sandwich combo! Will be back soon.
google avatar

Russ S.

Yelp
We visited friends in Greensboro and asked them to recommend a bbq restaurant at which we could meet for dinner. Wow. This place was amazing. Fast, low cost, hot, tasty, etc. All five stars all the way. The pulled pork melted in my mouth, as did the hushpuppies. Others in our group had brisket, mac and cheese, and hamburgers. We all sat, caught up, and raved about how tasty the food was. We can't wait to return!
google avatar

AJ J.

Yelp
This was my first time eating here. I got the quarter chicken with Mac n Cheese and Peach Cobbler with ice cream. The chicken was extremely dry. If they hadn't put a lot of sauce on it, I wouldn't have eaten at all. If you are a true Mac n Cheese lover, know that it isn't homemade. The peach cobbler though was so delicious! I was mad that they put it in a small container and the ice cream in a bigger container. It was so good I wanted more but they are closed on Sundays. Will definitely be back for that if nothing else.
