"Imagine a jazz quartet performing a basement punk show—fast and raw, but improvisational and imbued with technical brilliance. That’s the energy at the Stanbury, which simultaneously seems to be many locals’ favorite restaurant and yet somewhat under the radar. There’s no predictable setlist (or in this case, menu on the website) but the ever-experimental kitchen reliably delivers playful bites, like the recent Nashville hot chicken with ramp ranch and roasted carrots tikka masala. There are no reservations, so arrive early—the waitlist starts at 4:30pm—or towards the end of dinner service." - eric ginsburg

"Vintage posters and embroidered sayings adorn the walls of this Raleigh staple, along with a fair amount of taxidermied animals. Think hippie-basement-hangout-meets-mountain-cabin vibe. The open kitchen and small space combined with the dim lighting and candlelit tables means it’s always warm and cozy inside. The menu changes frequently, but the pasta dishes, like the recent tagliatelle with bread crumbs, chili, broccoli raab, and pecorino, are always a knockout, as is the bread and butter that’s always on the menu. They don’t accept reservations but have plenty of outdoor seating with heaters (and drink service) should there be a wait." - Elliott Harrell
"Stanbury is a perennial Raleigh favorite for it’s cozy, hip atmosphere and ever-changing eclectic menu. Past offerings have included mushroom bisque, a grilled ribeye steak, and roasted beets with whipped goat cheese — but there’s also an octopus tostada, General Tso’s sweetbreads, and a crispy pig head. Considering that the cocktail and wine menu is as eclectic as the food, no two visits to Stanbury are the same." - Matt Lardie
"A farm-to-table operation that reinvents everyday ingredients with startling creativity—one reviewer’s lifelong dislike of peaches was undone by a grilled-peach preparation—pairing accessible-yet-elevated dishes from an ever-rotating menu with a garage-chic atmosphere." - Eater Staff
