"Fremont burger bar Stanich’s is slowly but surely reopening, the Portland Mercury reports. Handwritten signs with the day’s hours have started to appear on Stanich’s door, more than a year after the restaurant closed in January 2018, and almost four months after owner Steve Stanich’s legal issues came to light. The Mercury reported that the restaurant was open from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night, specifying that the restaurant was “training new employees.” The restaurant is still marked as “permanently closed” on Yelp and Google. In 2017, Thrillist writer Kevin Alexander named Stanich’s cheeseburger the best burger in America, which Stanich publicly blamed for the closing of his restaurant months later. During the same time period, Stanich was arrested for drinking while driving, and was found guilty of reckless driving in April 2018. Those charges were filed during his probation for a previous domestic violence incident, in which he allegedly choked his now ex-wife in front of their son. Stanich was later acquitted of the DUII charge, and told Willamette Week that his legal troubles had “nothing to do” with the restaurant’s closure." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

"For decades, Northeast Fremont burger bar Stanich’s was a neighborhood favorite, a no-frills sports bar racking up positive local press since opening in 1949. Last year, its cheeseburger was named the best burger in America by Thrillist." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

"Stanich’s, a nationally celebrated burger joint in Fremont, Portland, has been closed for almost nine months. Despite signs from owner Steve Stanich indicating a hopeful reopening, the restaurant remains closed with its website down and Google listing it as permanently closed. The closure, originally intended for an employee vacation and deep cleaning, has extended indefinitely. The restaurant gained national acclaim in May 2017 when its cheeseburger with grilled onions was named the best burger in America by Thrillist critic Kevin Alexander, which led to overwhelming response and business challenges for Stanich." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

My wife and I came here and decided to split a burger after seeing the size of it on the nearby table. But after taking a few bites, we quickly ordered another one to split. It was that good! The pennants on the wall are true Americana and although it does feel like you're in Iowa when you're in here, that's not such a bad thing in this day and age. If I ever have friends/family from the midwest that don't want to try something new, then I take them to Stanich's where they can get a fabulous burger and walk away satisfied.

I've been coming here since I was a kid and fortunately it hasn't changed at all. There really only needs to be one item on the menu, The Special. Vegans or other folks with dietary concerns should go somewhere else. Just greasy burgers with bacon, ham, and egg. The greasy homemade fries finish it off.

Dubbed the “Worlds Greatest Hamburger” by some famous reviewer. He ain’t lying. They are in my top 3 Pdx burgers. Are they open? Did they close? Call ahead, hours and availability may change. It’s worth it folks, believe you me…

Great burgers. Lots of personality in this place. Definitely worth checking out.

Burger was good. Staff was rude, service was bad, tables were so dirty. Someone should tell hem to heat their oil before they cook the fries.

Drove from Gresham only to SADLY find a dark gloomy restaurant with a "Temporarily Closed" Sign on the door... PLEASE Tell me it truly is only temporary as Stanich's & their Patty Melts are a INSISTENT Family favorite to my Husband & his WHOLE Family- my late Father in-law would have eaten Stanich's Patty Melts 7-days a week if he could. We will cross all fingers & anticipate the wait for the doors to open again AND proudly wait excess time for another Patty Melt 😍💜🍔

Food is good, the place is very dated and service is very slow. Renovation would be very beneficial

Legitimate old school dive with great burgers. They're going to have trouble scaling to the crowds after the 'best burger' article, but the wait is worth it.
