The Best Restaurants in Richmond, Virginia | Eater DC

"You’d be hard pressed to find a funner spot than Stanley’s, a little taste of Philly in the Fan. It’s the home of meaty cheesesteaks and heavenly hoagies like the Mckoko, with a melange of meats, plus American cheese, pickled red onions, and Duke’s Mayo with a Calabrian kick. Hit the bar for a requisite Negroni." - Stephanie Ganz

Google
Very nice place easy to find, might have to drive around a little bit to find parking but it's not too bad. Very cozy old fashioned interior AC. The staff is good kind of get what you want and leave you alone for the most part, could be a little bit more attentive but not bad. The food is crazy good I had the Ted Hanson smoked turkey one of the best sandwiches I've ever had only criticism, I wish the pickled onions were more scattered through the sandwich. Highly recommend this place.

Google
The Philly was really good! Enough that I was able to split it and eat the other half the next day. I upgraded the chips to fries and the fries were good but they were massively over salted. It gets busy so earlier the better and watch out for parking because it can get a little busy forcing you to park blocks away.

Stanleys has the best Italian hoagie in Richmond. Their Cheesesteaks are well known - but their Italians are what I go for. I've been going to them since they opened - but why make a review today? I haven't been in awhile - and today they actually IMPROVED?! Yes - their bread is softer. They bake it. The manager tipped us off while we were there and told us they got a new oven and that might be why. FOOD: The Italian = South Philly Special It's amazing. Get it. Stanley's Cheesesteak - no explanation needed, also get it. Another underrated gem? Their tomato pie. It's not a pie and not really a tomato on it. It's basically a Detroit slice of pizza that's on focaccia topped with a slight tomato sauce. It's amazing and I've been dreaming about it since I went the other day. --- On the fence about going here? Jump off the fence already. I saw a comment here about parking - and it's everywhere in Richmond, not special to Stanleys.

As I bit into the most perfect melted cheese and steak sandwich I was elevated to pure bliss. Nothing says cheesesteak better than melt in your mouth spicy cheese and peppers mixed with delicious steak strips. Big bonus was the music they had on. Top tier.

Google
The Philly steak is cheesey and has a lot of meat. I would do without the peppers and onions . And ask for less black pepper season on mine. Also, I'm not a fan of the bread .but overall, it's not a bad sandwich. I would go back and try the wedge salad and try it another hoagie during happy hour when they are 2.00 off .The bartender and server were nice and friendly. Give them a try .

Google
Came here because of the reviews I kept hearing about it. I ordered their original Philly Cheesesteak, the Stanley. They use a sesame seed bun which was different but fine. The cheese steak however, was absolutely too salty for my liking. If I had to assume, they cook the steak and cheese together which is adding to the saltiness but regardless, not a fan. Seeing how they are known for cheese steaks, I dont see myself coming back.

Google
It’s a busy spot, expect a bit of a wait sometimes. Try to get a spot at the bar if you can it’s much better service than a booth. The cheesesteaks are out of this world. They have absolutely no business being so frickin tasty. The staff has always been super nice, but again, they are busy and it’s a small spot. Come in with a good attitude and they will always reciprocate. I love Stanley’s!

Google
The beef cheesesteak sub is something special. Their seasonal tomato salad was the best part of the meal. Their seasonal key lime pie was a hit. Service was perfection. Parking was a breeze. No wait. Thanks!

Yelp
The decor and vibe are delightfully casual and cozy. The service is polite and prompt without being overbearing. But the star here is the food. The beef Philly is to die for, salty, meat, and with plenty of delicious bell pepper flavor. The seasonal vegetable was mitaki mushrooms with ricotta and it was thoughtful, spicy and surprising. I love everything we got and encourage anyone coming to spit a slice of the tomato pie, it's not quite like I'd get in Jersey but it is tasty.

Yelp
(3.5) For starters, the subs are very good. This far I've sampled three types. You can't go wrong with the Cheesesteaks. The bread is legit! No fries for lunch, only dinner. They also didn't have any diet soda options. Only unsweetened tea and water. It was odd to me that the water cups were so small. It creates a need for frequent refills. If you do order any other beverages you do not get free refills. I did not see that noted anywhere nor were we informed by our server. $4 for a bottled coke and $3/each for Ginger-ale. I had the Roast Pork which comes with "gravy". It was good, but the gravy was lacking flavor for me. No worries I'll try something different next time. Everyone else was very pleased with their selections. The decor was fine. They do have a pool table in the upper area. Service was adequate. Hustling on water refills. The subs are higher quality and the price reflects that. Expect a $20 per person lunch experience. Hopefully, next time they'll have Diet Coke. We'll be back. Check them out for yourself!

Yelp
My wife and I tried Stanley's for the first time today. We are Philadelphia transplants and although we have been gone for almost 20 years we still visit regularly including Eagles season tickets. In my experience it is virtually impossible to get a quality cheesesteak outside the 215/609 area codes. Anyplace far enough away to label it a "Philly" cheesesteak only offers disappointment. We have been in RVA for 15 years and appreciate the city's great food but miss decent pizza and cheesesteaks. (RVA has some very good pizza; Secret Squares, Christian's and RVA Woodfired Pizza to name a few. Just not certain that any are "great".) We visited Stanley's to pick up lunch and made the trek into town from the far West End. We arrived to a small line for seating and a few folks waiting for takeout. Our order was promptly taken by the bartender who was polite and efficient. We ordered one traditional cheesesteak and one chicken cheesesteak, both with Cooper Sharp. Yes, two sandwiches were $36.00, and yes, the checkout device included the now ubiquitous tip options. We thought the sandwiches worth every penny including the tip. Cheesesteaks are about the balance of cheese, meat and bread and the quality of those elements. The Stanley's versions were spot on. The roll was perfect. Soft without being delicate inside and a bit crunchy and toothsome on the outside. The meat was rich and abundant and the Cooper Sharp mixed throughout. To those who claim seeded rolls are not appropriate, I encourage you to visit Philly again soon and sample the best it has to offer. John's Roast Pork and Barklay Prime's famous $100 (now $140!) both have seeded rolls just to name a couple. Amoroso's rolls are great but not the only game in town. Seek out some rolls from Sarcone's if you are curious. We anxious to return and try more of the fare.

Yelp
This is an excellent sandwich. They don't call it an Italian, but it is an Italian and it is delicious. There is tons of meat on it and everything is very flavorful. also the french fries were delicious. They were perfectly crispy and covered in salt.
google avatar

Kyle G.

Yelp
Stanley's is a welcome addition the the RVA sandwich scene. I have never had a better Philly Cheesesteak. That sandwich is something else. The bread, shipped in from Maryland I'm told, is chewy and simply better than anything you're going to get in the south. They chop up peppers to add into the filling which give it a kick and the meat itself is superb. The service is friendly and the drink options are good too. They have a uniquely Richmond vibe without the grunginess.

Yelp
Stanley's has the best roast pork sandwich and I didn't even get to eat it fresh, we ordered takeout and drove 30 minutes back home. I think I liked it a lot better than Johns Roast Pork and DiNic's in Philly, or maybe I am saying that because it helped fill a very large void that I missed from my hometown. Regardless, the broccoli rabe was so flavorful and the slices of roast pork was so wonderfully seasoned. My first bite was without the gravy, delicious. My second bite with the gravy (which was packed separately), delicious. I saved half and placed it in the fridge, hour later I was craving it and took a bite of it cold - still delicious. I've also had their cheesesteak, reminiscent of Angelo's in Philly. I'd do light peppers next time. The bread is spot on. Everyone talks about the amoroso rolls, I love the soft and airy rolls too... BUT these seeded rolls just add another dimension to an already delicious sandwich (depending where you get it of course). I'm a Philadelphian that believes cooper sharp or sharp provolone belongs on a cheesesteak, not wiz. We get wiz on fries back home when you order from a corner store or papi store, that's when it's acceptable. Anyway, Stanley's executes it right. It is expensive to most, but the quality can't be beat. Service was prompt and I love the decor of the place. We sat at the bar during our wait for takeout, next time we plan to dine in.

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant to hit in Richmond. Awesome vibes and dare I say it's the best Philly cheesesteak in the South East!
google avatar

Yelp
Stanley's was MUCH needed in Richmond. As a South Jersey transplant who *loves* hoagies, it was refreshing to not have to modify my hoagie order to death here. I forgot to say I wanted my South Philly Special not cooked like so many places around here confusingly do, but alas, it was not -- phew. Plus no weird ingredients like Italian dressing on them. So far, I've had the South Philly Special twice. It was great both times. The first time they forgot the provolone, which slightly bummed me out, but it still managed to be fantastic without it (that is not something this cheese lover would usually say). The bread really elevates the sandwich. Gotta love a good seeded roll. Their cheesesteak and roast pork are also top tier options. I've heard good things about the chicken cutlet and caesar salad too (the cutlet was HUGE). The space is no frills, very small, with a cute bar and some old school tables. Service was good on both visits. Prices are reasonable ($16ish per hoagie) given the quality.

Yelp
I travel a lot for work and often search out and ask around for the best place to get a Philly Cheesesteak. Stanley's did not disappoint!!!!! HUGE portions and awesome shoe string fries. They have my vote for the best cheesesteak in Richmond!
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
The cheesesteaks were okay. However the ceasar salad was amazing. I would order just that since the cheesesteak did not agree with my stomach.

Matthew G.

Yelp
50 dollars for 2 people: a couple boring subs with bland flavor and congealed cheese and a couple diet cokes. I swear, people think they can serve you anything and you'll pay 50 dollars anymore. Save your money and go to Subway or something. The quality is on par for less than half the price.
google avatar

Gianna S.

Yelp
I love Stanley's! Such a solid sandwich and the quality is consistent every time. I can't speak to most of the menu because I always order a south Philly special - it's too good to deviate! There is some great art and pictures on the wall to look at and the servers are all friendly.

Yelp
We had a lovely experience at Stanley's. I had seen a recent post on Instagram about Stanley's and it piqued my curiosity immediately. I am from the Philly area and so love a good cheesesteak. I recruited some friends and off we went! Stanley's is in a cute neighborhood location. The atmosphere inside was lively. My friends and I sat in the back and all ordered Philly cheesesteaks. We also tried a slice of the tomato pie. Now, I will say this. The tomato pie is exactly what I as a northerner thought it would be. (Also the bread is delicious. That sourdough or whatever it was, is to die for. Nice chew and big bubbles.) it's NOT what my southern friends expected it to me! I was happy to finish the slice for them. The cheesesteak also was really excellent. I ate the whole thing and I'm not ashamed. We had a nice waiter who was pretty attentive. The place was popping all night. I hope Stanley's becomes a staple.

Yelp
We decided to stop by in a Tuesday to get takeout for dinner. My husband picked this spot because it's new and he loves Philly-style sandwiches. I think we were both under the impression that this was like a Coppola's shop, with more a takeout vibe but really, it is more of a full service bar with a small booth seating area in the back, that sells Philly sandwiches and cheesesteaks. We don't live in The Fan so I guess if I walked by there first it would have been obvious, but alas, we walked in. The menu is not extensive. A few salads and sandwiches. We ordered two cold sandwiches to go at the bar. The bartender put a bill in a bill holder you get at sit down restaurants and then hovered around as my husband was signing the slip. I believe he wanted a 20% tip for taking our order, but when he saw he didn't get that, I feel like they took extra long to bring out our sandwiches. In fact, a guy walked in way after us, sat at the bar and ordered a cheesesteak and beer and got his before we did! We waited a good half an hour for two cold sandwiches and baby bag of Ruffles potato chips. Paid $35+ for them. So if we had tipped 20% that's like $20 each for a cold sandwich. Lord, no. The sandwiches were just ok. Nothing spectacular at all. I got the South Philly Special, which had way too much mayo and all contents falling out of it. I had to stuff stuff back in it for a decent photo. Just plain messy and we were just disappointed. If you've ever been to Grazie Grazie in DC (from the folks who did Taylor Gourmet), that was the quality we expected from Stanley's and Grazie Grazie is cheaper in more high rent area, so I just don't get it but we won't be back.

Yelp
My first stop into Stanley's was a good one. My wife and I could tell the place was buzzing as we walked up to the front door. Every table and bar seat was occupied. A nice dude put our name on a waitlist and we were sat at the bar less than 5min later. The space, which I'd not been inside of since the Robin Inn days, was more or less the same just cleaned up a bit. I dig the decision of simplicity and holding onto some of the integrity of the old space. It feels "lived in" or like it's been "occupied" by them for a while. A tasteful draft list and wine selection. The draft prices are a bit steep, however. I opted for the cheesesteak for this visit. The sandwich comes out wrapped almost as if to-go, like grabbing it from a stand in Philly. It's meaty, spicy, savory, crunchy, chewy and filling in all the right ways. If you're not a fan of spice, order your philly without the spicy peppers as they do pack a manageable punch. I think I'll request no peppers on a next visit to appreciate better the meat/cheese/bread combination. The peppers all but overshadow the rest. The bread, sub rolls, were incredible. That made the sandwich in my eyes. Crispy, crunchy, soft, chewy, etc. and was the appropriate ratio to accommodate the rest of the ingredients. The bread doesn't overwhelm the rest is what I mean. Broccoli rabe on the side was delish. It's vinegary bitter, soft and crunchy goodness. Staff were friendly and welcoming. I'll be back and look forward to trying other offerings. ABC license gets acquired in mid May, so spirits to come!

Yelp
I heard good things, and know their specialty is Philly Cheesesteaks, but after learning they usually have a vegetarian menu item, I was excited to try it out! I went in for takeout and saw a Tempura Fried Squash special on the menu. To my surprise, it was far from what the description alluded to imo.. it had SO many twigs of dill. I like dill, but this is overbearing. I actually expected yellow squash, it looked to be zucchini, but no big deal I like both. But it was barely tempura fried looking, and hardly cooked. I initially thought it was cucumber.. the olive tapenade was good, I'll give it that. And I liked the crispness of the bread roll. But that's all that was enjoyable on this, the dill and cook of the squash really ruined it. Note: this business doesn't have a phone. It's also difficult to find their most current full menu posted. A week later, my friends wanted to go there, and I was down to because they posted a grilled cheese special on IG, but to our surprise, their kitchen had switched to limited menu by our late arrival (not indicated on the website/couldn't call so we showed up) and they said all they could make us were a few meat ones, and that same unpleasant squash one.. I asked if they could make even a simple grilled cheese (answer was no), and took the moment to share my experience with the squash one and was basically met with a "I don't care, I don't work in the kitchen" by the staff member. We decided to leave. So I did try to speak to them, I guess I'll just share the experience here. I hope maybe they'll consider a new and better made veggie option. Honestly, just doing a Veggie Cheesesteak version with mushrooms, spices, cheese, peppers & onions may make more sense to stick with, rather than trying to be fancy. Since cheesesteak is their specialty, I bet it would be decent and simple, but good.

Sarah F.

Yelp
I have been to stanley's three times and have genuinely enjoyed the experience each time. I tend to go later in the evening so the kitchen has been out of something each visit (chicken, fries, fries + sausage) but honestly that hasn't mattered because the menu has plenty of options. My top two are the Ted Danson and the Chicken Cheesesteak. I could write a whole other post dedicated to the amazing sesame hoagie roll that all the sandwiches are served on but i'll save my breath (although very deserving of its own post!!). The drinks are fun and reasonably priced, draft options are great. The vibes are immaculate and the music is fun. Not a lot of TVs so a fun place to "unplug" and have great conversation. Staff are nothing short of friendly and helpful. As someone who is dedicated to find a "third place" in 2024, Stanley's is #1 on my list.

Diana M.

Yelp
The food and service is mid. I had the cheesesteak. It had unseasoned meat, hot peppers and cheese whiz. The cheese hardens fast. The peppers are good but it's the only thing that made the sandwich edible. I upgraded the chips to fries... the fries looked and tasted like over salted McDonald's fries. In total I paid $27 for a cheesesteak, fries and a can of coke. Not worth it. (The $27 includes a 20% tip which the waitress hardly deserved)
google avatar

Shelley R.

Yelp
Fun Retro Atmosphere!! The staff here is so charming! Our food was excellent! I really regret not taking more pictures! The atmosphere was so dark! And the food was so delicious that it wasn't around long enough for a lot of photos!
google avatar

Angel W.

Yelp
Hands down best sandwich in RVA. Came here on a Sunday night and I got the special that was a homemade beef bolognese with a Caesar salad (with fresh anchovies) and house made garlic bread. I cannot express enough how good the whole meal was. It came with a glass of red wine and was $26, an absolute steal. My partner got a chicken Philly and it was probably the best Philly I have ever tasted. Everyone here is so nice and they have a great sense of old school Italian flair within their decor. The seats are also very cute and SO comfortable. We will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
I've been living in Richmond for 3.5 years and this is the best cheesesteak I've had thus far! My partner agrees. I love that it's served on a 10" sub roll. Sometimes 6" is too small but 12" is too much. I find that an 8-10" roll is just right. The meat in of itself was seasoned so perfectly and I love the way it melded with the cheese and cherry peppers. Two cheesesteaks and one soda came to $38. That might seem high but for as much food as you're getting and the quality, we thought it was a fair price. We'll definitely be back to try other menu items!
google avatar

Andres C.

Yelp
Love the steaks here. I'm from Philly and this is the closest I've had to Angelo's or Dalessandros in the 804. At first, I thought they were kinda expensive, but I've paid $13 for a cheesesteak at Wawa and you get what you pay for, right? This place is authentic and they even have a roast pork dutchie! Thanks for bringing Philly to RVA for me!!
google avatar

Wolf P.

Yelp
BEST. CHEESESTEAK. IN. RICHMOND. The combination of white cheddar instead of provolone, the bread choice and the stability it has to hold together mounds of tender, juicy, flavorful steak with a touch of heat from the peppers! Insert chef's kiss. I'll drop the mic and walk away now.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
The food was excellent, a touch pricey but well worth it. Service wasn't really on par, kinda slow and not very attentive. I'll probably return for an occasional takeout, but doubtful I'll be dining in.
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
My wife and I were enjoying drinks here and playing cards. I had finished my drink, my wife was halfway through her drink. Our server never stopped by to ask if we would like to order more. Then some other staff ( I assume the manager) came and asked us to move to the lounge to open up tables for customers. We are customers. Our bill was not closed out. Please come take our order and we will pay you more money. I don't understand how you can be so inattentive and then rude to paying customers. The ambience is great here, wish I could stay.

El B.

Yelp
love servers Sam and Avery great food also. Love the pool table wish it was working when I went though
google avatar

Erick T.

Yelp
Way over priced $$$ Save your money, Bad service, Overcharge of additional sub, Had 2 got charged for 3 And looking for a 20% rip on crap service ....
google avatar

Nadia H.

Yelp
Super good sandwiches! Friendly and fast service, and a chill philly bar atmosphere. Also have a pool table and really good drinks :)

Joanne K.

Yelp
We go to Richmond, and previously lived there but it was our first time at Stanley's. Great vibe and yummy food!
google avatar

Garrett G.

Yelp
Best cheesesteak in Richmond! The beef has great quality and flavor, fresh bread, and that Cooper sharp cheese that they use in Philly. I'm very thankful that I have a place to get a delicious Philly steak in RVA after searching for years. Thanks for saving me the 4 hour drive!

Patrick M.

Yelp
There are some restaurants that you are afraid to review. Not because it will be negative, but instead the opposite - that too many glowing reviews can make an excellent place too popular, and eventually a victim of its own success. Stanley's is one of those restaurants. Amazing food and great service from a friendly staff, a hip indoor area, and a taste of home from those who were born a little up north. Have tried the cheesesteak, south Philly, and the Negroni. All were simply amazing. Coming back for the tomato pie next. A superb restaurant, you cannot pick a bad dish here.

Francisco P.

Yelp
This is the best cheese steak I have had in the metro Richmond area besides Waves in Hopewell. I would venture to say I might like this one a smidge better because the bread is slightly different. The square slice of tomato pie was great too. They have a happy hour special with a beer, shot, and a tomato pie for $10. The steak and cheese was $15ish but definitely worth it. I will be coming back.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Philly Steak was the second best I've ever had only maybe second to John's in Philly. Roast Pork was also fantastic. Can't wait to try the tomato pie.
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
Good steak and cheese, nice atmosphere and staff, but I won't explore the menu after my last visit.

John B.

Yelp
Attempted TWICE to meet group excited to try Stanley's on Wednesday for lunch!!! Their site states they open Wednesday at 11am BUT both attempts met failure with handwritten note at door "explaining" closure. Are they out of business?? No phone or website to contact... One star due to lack of soiree twice!
google avatar

Greg D.

Yelp
Cheesesteak is good but not the rolls. Need Amorosa rolls please! Service was great. Vibes were great! Come watch the Philly sports here.

Evan D.

Yelp
SO GOOD-- The chicken cheesesteak is so good it's somehow even better than the regular cheesesteak. Have tried several sandwiches off the menu, still can't get over the chicken. The sesame bread is perfect & I wish I could have it at home. It's all worth the money, highly recommend. Feel super lucky to have Stanley's here. For reference I've had a few spots in Philly--Joe's Steaks + Soda, DiNic's, John's, Delco--Stanley's is way better.

Kelly O.

Yelp
When you visit a place that's focused on serving up authentic Philly cheesesteaks, they really only have to get one thing right: It's all about the sandwich. Stanley's definitely achieves this lofty goal. Their Philly is perfect. Great sesame seed bread and tasty filling with just the right amount of peppery heat. But that's not all Stanley's gets right. They stick the landing with great fries, friendly, attentive service and nostalgic items like Miller ponies and Coke in glass bottles. We'll be back, but it may be a while before we try their other sandwiches, because why?

Dana B.

Yelp
2nd time in the past 3 months, I have arranged to meet friends there for dinner, and they were closed during the hours advertised on their door. As I approached there was a crowd of 6 people standing outside, I thought wow, they were busy and these people were waiting for a seat...nope, they were all in the same situation we were, showed up to meet friends. only to discover they were closed. There are other options in Richmond; I'll never set foot in this restaurant, which apparently will not matter to them since they are so successful that they can close whenever they want.

Michele J.

Yelp
We had at Stanley's last week. Everything was so good! How is that wedge salad so much better than everywhere else? It really is. And the cheesesteak was one of the best I've had. And it was huge. Trout dip was delicious. Just the right amount of dilll. Service was thoughtful and friendly. Just the whole evening was amazing. The whole vibe of the place is great. Laidback but everything is carefully thought out. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of cheesesteaks and have had them all around Richmond and Philly. When I heard that Stanley's took over the Robin Inn and specialized in cheesesteak my wife and I had to give it a try. We went early and got a seat easily. We decided to order the cheesesteak and the pork with broccoli rabe subs. At first I was skeptical about getting hot peppers on a cheesesteak, but I was proven wrong quickly. The peppers gave it great flavor and the cheese was nicely even distributed in the sandwich. One of the best parts was the bread, it tasted freshly baked and had a nice crisp on the outside. Probably the best cheesesteak in Richmond. The pork and broccoli rabe was amazing as well. It was juicy and the meat was tender. We will be back for sure!
google avatar

Nia H.

Yelp
I enjoyed the cheesesteak but pretty much nothing else about the experience. The service was terrible, the prices were way too high, the chips just didn't cut it, and it was way too dark. Save your time and money for something better.
google avatar

Leslie N.

Yelp
I'm a cheesesteak lover and was so excited Stanley's came to our neighborhood. I'm disappointed though. I wish there'd been more of a warning about the peppers. Also very salty. The biggest disappointment was the bread. I wasn't expecting a hard crunchy chewy roll. Then to just dump regular old ruffles chips on the plate ...no fries or rings or even homemade chips.

Ola O.

Yelp
Went here with a bro. Best Philly I've had in Richmond so far. The secret is in the sesame bun. Just trust me, you'll love it. The service was great and the ambiance was chilled out and inviting. I feel like you could take your grandma here and she would love it, with all the historical art and whatnot they put up. It's got a pool table too, so that's also a huge plus.

Katie T.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious, I love the cheesesteak and the Ted Danson. The staff is super friendly and the dining room is cozy. Great place!
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Great steakums! No frills, just quality ingredients. A bit expensive, but you get your money's worth.

Yelp
It's the real deal folks. no lie. I'm from Philly and I have had my share of steaks, hoagie, etc. Finally, someone got it right here in RVA!

If you ask any Philly native, like me, for their top 10 list of best cheesesteak shops in the mother country, one establishment is sure to be on everyone's list. Angelo's in South Philly. I am pleased to announce that Angelo's has just opened a new location at the corner of Robinson Street and Park Avenue in Richmond. I spent last weekend in my hometown to watch my beloved Birds whop them Cowgirls (it was pretty close actually). I stopped at a number of cheesesteak cathedrals while there and thought trying Stanley's today would be unfair in light of the proximity of my visits to John's Roast Pork, Dalessandro's and Donkey's Place. Stanley's cheesesteaks are every bit as good and authentic as the aforementioned shrines of cheesesteak exceptionalism. The rolls are of Sarcone's Bakery perfection. He uses Cooper Sharp white American cheese - the purist's preferred varietal. The ribeye steak is chopped to a perfect consistency precisely like Angelo's does it. The hot peppers add just the right kick like the hot pepper relish at Donkey's Place in Camden. The people on this site who have propounded criticism of Stanley's cheesesteaks are just plain wrong. They do not know what they are talking about. I should mention that one of the owners' was my server. He was super nice and is Philly through and through. He too is a huge fan of Angelo's and has successfully managed to recreate the South Philly masterpiece in Richmond. BTW - the ambience is corner sports bar with Allen Iverson, Chase Utley, and Randall Cunningham jersey's hanging behind the bar. The owner told me he plays Eagles games on a big screen every Sunday they play. I could not recommend this gem of a place any more highly!!

Yelp
Excellent bread. Probably better than what you get in Philly. I travel to the city of brotherly love once a month. I suspect the owner visited Philly but really didn't do their due diligence. Roast Pork sandwich was not even close to authentic. Seasoning for pork was good but Like chopped BBQ (Eastern NC pork) not sliced like Philly. Broccoli rabe over cooked and no garlic. Sharp provolone was good but sparse on sandwich. Cheese steak was okay but short on meat, heavy on peppers and cheese was okay. No whiz option. Service was adequate but not excellent. Maybe this is as good as Philly gets in Richmond. Maybe I'm being overly critical, but it felt contrived.

Yelp
Wanted to like it.... Went with Adult Family members and a Neighbor. Ambiance ??? Weak! Never visited Robin Inn but I can't imagine a whole lot was done making it even remotely a Philadelphia vibe. My fault for not checking but went because of a Social media challenge poking jabs at Hoagiefest and knocking $2 off Subs from 4-6..... perfect right? $16 Subs???? ( less $2) $14 ...such a deal right??? I hate to break it to you but unless there's a Wa Wa on the island of Hawaii charging $16 - I felt like I was taken! Bagged ruffle chips for plate coverage come on ...step up your game. For a couple bucks more I could have eaten at Acacia!! I'm from up North I know what a great Sub tastes like trust me. WaWa at $6 ..... I'll forgoe the Sono's blaring Music the hipster vibe and hollering over it to get our Servers attention while on their Phone texting.... Good Luck! Robin Inn was there 30-40 years perhaps they got tired but they must have done something right.
