Umm... Consider me another one duped by Star Hill Provisions' spot on Top Chef. This restaurant was actually the inspiration behind our trip to Kentucky in the first place. Sadly Star Hill Provisions was nothing at all what I had imagined. I don't want to say it was bad, because it wasn't, but the menu is very limited, and nothing that screams "Southern" cooking in my opinion. For example, there isn't a single barbeque item on the menu. Doesn't that seem odd? Maybe I'm just a tourist, but I don't get it. I'm not sure what the inspiration is/was behind Chef Miller's menu, but it missed the mark according to my expectations.
Star Hill Provisions is ok if you show up early for your tour and need to get something to eat. Just don't get your hopes up for a mind-blowing meal. You're going to place your order from a limited menu cafeteria style, and sit at a picnic table of sorts with your corresponding order number on the table signaling to the server where to go with your food. I had a meatloaf sandwich and my girlfriend had a Benedictine sandwich with bacon (I suppose hers is pretty Kentucky). Both were good, just... No ham, no beer cheese, no biscuits, no burgoo?
On the bright side of things, however, I can highly recommend the distillery tour. The grounds at Maker's Mark are absolutely stunning. The tour is very informative, and everyone along the way is as pleasant as can be. The people definitely put forth the Kentucky charm. The restaurant; not so much.
