Best South Asian Restaurants in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Star of India has served dishes from both the northern and southern parts of the country since 1980. The mixed appetizer sampler is a best bet and popular with customers: think two samosas, four eggplant pakoras, four onion bhajees, and a papadam. Other standouts include the Indian classics butter chicken, palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, aloo matar gobi, which all should be accompanied by the cheese naan." - Serena Maria Daniels

BEST SAMOSAS EVER. LITERALLY. This has easily become one of the tastiest, and plentiful Indian restaurants I’ve ever been to. Service was immaculate and the staff was so so kind. Please take your money here. VERY GOOD PORTIONS > PRICE!!!!!

Google
My husband researched, which Indian restaurant was the best in the Detroit area and he found Star of India. The food was so incredibly delicious that we talked about it for days! Indian cuisine is my favorite and I have never had more delicious food! We ordered butter, chicken, and goat korma. Both were absolutely delicious and I have never had such delicious goat meat, it was sublime. The service was like a five star restaurant and the prices were beyond reasonable. This will be my new favorite restaurant.

Google
Hands down the best Indian restaurant in Metro Detroit, and it’s 100% halal! Star of India has been awarded year after year by Hour Detroit, Metro Times, Click On Detroit, and more, and it’s easy to see why. The food is consistently flavorful, authentic, and perfectly spiced. Every dish feels like it’s made with love. The butter chicken, samosas, and garlic naan are my go-tos, but honestly, everything I’ve tried has been amazing. It’s a cozy, family-owned spot with some of the most welcoming service I’ve ever experienced. A true hidden gem in Ferndale and absolutely worth the drive.

Google
Killer dinner! We had a group of eight and split two Star of India appetizers and several dinners. Everything was amazing!!! We had two young kids who lived the naan and butter chicken. The chicken pasanda and tandoori chicken were excellent! Saag paneer was the best I’ve had. The vegetable korma was spot-on! Everyone loved the garlic and cheese naan too. Our friends commented about how inexpensive the meal was. Star of India is the best Indian food around!!!

Google
My family and I have been customers of star of India since we moved to the west side of Detroit almost 7 years ago. We dine in once a month and probably get take out once a month as well. The food is always delicious but the cherry on top is the excellent service and care. The owners are always so excited to see their customers— not just me— everyone! It’s fun to see the staff welcome every customer like they are family. Tonight we had placed an online order for pick up, apparently they were running a little bit behind— it was not a big deal. My husband waited and we enjoyed a lovely meal when we got home. I just a call from the restaurant to apologize again for the wait and make sure the food was correct— this phone call was completely unnecessary but really speaks to how much pride this restaurant has in their food and their service. Thank you again! We take our two little ones to Star of India often and I promise they are very mindful of the spice levels of the food— if you order mild, it will be mild. Wonderful food from a wonderful family, thank you again!

Google
Came here on a whim today, we were riding around hunting for a place to eat and my fiance said "let's try that place". Man when I say he done good I mean it!! Now I'm not very knowledgeable about Indian cuisine but everything we ordered was delicious!! No exaggerating. The service was phenomenal and the decor was authentic and beautiful. We definitely found a new food spot.

Google
We came here for their new lunch buffet, and my gosh, was I so happy we did! The price was great, the options were varied, fresh, and tasty. I would definitely come back for the buffet, or just regular meals. The service was prompt, and the restaurant is very clean and modern. I understand why they were voted best in Detroit so many times!

Sara Turner

Google
I was SOOO excited to try a buffet as I have only ever had butter or Tikka chicken and love it, but wanted to see what else I am missing without the commitment of a full meal. Boy am I so happy I had the chance to try a variety bc I now have more, way more things than I thought to order. ( Chana, dall tarka, onion bahjee, biryani chicken? ..bright red chicken were all very good, my new favorites ) The food, atmosphere ( beautifully decorated ) and service were more than I anticipated. What a genuinely nice, wholesome family to support. I now have a new goto restaurant all bc they decided to have a buffet 😊. P.s , I have never had a mango lassy ... absolutely delicious. Thank you sir! You will have me as a customer for life.

Yelp
Romantic, customer-oriented restaurant with a varied menu. Management is Punjabi, and in a neon sign above the back wall, "Halal food". Vegetarian choices are numerous, also vegan ones. My husband and I ordered the prix fixe dinner for two, and this could have easily fed four! We especially liked the fresh, tender pastry around the vegetable pakoras, and the lamb was melt-in-the-mouth tender. Other possible proteins are shrimp, goat, beef, fish, and multiple dal. "Medium spiced" is accurate. We will be back.

Yelp
This is my favorite Indian restaurant by far. The staff is welcoming and quick with orders. The food is absolutely delicious and consistent. I order from here every week and am always pleased. Plus, it's in wonderful downtown Ferndale.

Yelp
Open for dine-in until 8pm on Sunday. Passed by this place many times before going today. It's been here a while. We were told to perch up or grab a seat by the window seat, there are 3 tables by the window, they are up on stages up front. The back page of my menu had some crusted on food residue, gross. Our waiter is nice, attentive. He made sure we were okay with spicy food. We said we were fine. We ordered one Fattoush salad less pita,a mixed veggie curry, butter chicken and Chana masala, all medium plus with no rice. The waiter double checked that we don't want any rice, since rice usually comes with every entree. The fatoosh salad looks healthy, it's smaller than the waiter made it sound. I ordered a second one for my myself. The dressing is super light, rather bland and flavorless. Needs more sumac and much more vinegar, more oily than vinegar in it for sure. I added more vinegar and pepper and it's still rather bland, but slightly more flavorful at least. The butter chicken is tasty, spicy, but the meat is hard and overcooked. The channa masala is super spicy, more so than butter chicken and the mixed veggie curry too.

Yelp
Star of India has been one of our main go-tos for takeout during COVID. I have high standards for Indian food, and I can't get enough of my favorite order here. Specifically I can't stop ordering the Lamb Roganjosh, which is just super flavorful and perfectly spiced. It's a little tomatoey but not like a tikka masala, and has a bit of mango pickle flavor that comes through. The lamb is tender and even the mild plus will put a little hair on your chest. The other all stars are the lamb samosas, great flavor and a really light, crisp, salty exterior. Love them with the tangy green sauce. My wife gets something different every time we order, and it's all good to me but I'll never veer from the roganjosh most likely.

Yelp
I'm so glad we checked this place out. We were grocery shopping next door, and the smells eminating from the restaurant as we walked by smelled amazing. We asked the guys in the grocery store if the place was any good, and he said they order from there all the time; placed an order for the chicken biryani just now. So, we went. Yum. We dined in, and it's actually a very nice little dining room with a view of the street and linen napkins. The service was excellent, our waiter going into detail about the dishes when we asked. He made all of the sauces personally, and they were all awesome. We started with both the veggie and meat samosas which come with 3 dipping sauces. They were perfect! I personally love veggie samosas, so those were my favorite, but we'll order both again. We then ordered the mixed grill and the chicken biryani. Both were fantastic and huge portions. I got medium and my husband got medium plus heat. He really likes spice, and he was happy with the heat level. The dishes were all flavorful and fresh, needing only a touch of salt. The garlic cheese naan is also one of the best breads I've ever eaten. Chewy and perfect! We can't wait to try some of the curries!

Yelp
This was an amazing meal! We were hesitant based on previous reviews, but they were all very out dated. The food was delicious, full of spices, tender meat, and crispy appetizers. We had the star of India mixed appetizer, chicken tikka dansak, roganjosh with lamb, garlic naan, and coconut naan. We got the mild spicy level based on other reviewers and they were right on, perfect little bit of spiciness that we wanted. Ordered through Yelp/Grubhub. Food was perfectly on time and order was accurate. This is going to be our go-to spot in Ferndale. So close to home, will definitely be in our take-out rotation.

Yelp
So this place is in Ferndale which is a great area to dine and walk off your food when you are done. I've been going there for about two years and my favorite dish is the Butter Chicken, the garlic naan and the samosas...oh, I love love the meat ones. So crunchy and flavorful inside. I've tried a few other dishes, the veggie balls, can't recall the name right now, a mix of meat and again I don't recall the name but it would not be on my fav list. The lamb was a bit too chewy for me and the other pieces were very mediocre. I go back for the Butter Chicken, and samosas, the best. One thing to know, this place is not spicy, it's North Indian and they don't do all the spice. So if you aren't into Indian bc it's spicy then you will really appreciate this place. Also the staff is nice and a bit funny. I give 3 stars because of the lamb texture, no spice at all ( unless you ask) and it's just not the same.

Yelp
Recently came here with friends and had a pretty solid experience. It's pretty delicious Indian food! We started off with veggie and meat samosas, which I definitely recommend. It comes with three different sauces to try it with. Then we got butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, vindaloo and biryani. The butter chicken was my favorite especially with the paratha (which had the perfect texture. The chicken biryani was a close second. I've had better chicken tikka masala. We got mild + for everything and that worked perfect. The portions were pretty big too, so we got to take some home. The service: Fantastic. The server was very attentive and hilarious. He also gave us recommendations. Need to come back and try the Mango Lassi. Overall, we really enjoyed it and def would try again.
google avatar

Misha W.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood so we order from here with some regularity. The tikka masala is not as creamy as some places, but that's alright with me. The palak/spinach paneer is really creamy and very delicious. The okra masala can have some really fibrous pieces in it, which is not always fun. I need to branch out more since everything I've tried has been tasty. Service when dining in is really great. and BYOB- that's pretty awesome. I recommend overall!
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS GOOD NOW!! Guys, we need to talk. I've been trying this restaurant every year or two for the past 15 YEARS. It's less than a mile from my house and I would drive 20-25 minutes past it to get something better, because every time I hoped it was better, and every time I was disappointed. Until now. Got some takeout last night and it was delicious. 100% turnaround from all my previous experiences in terms of flavor, texture, everything. They clearly have a completely different chef and it's clearly working. They did increase the prices quite a bit, but for legit Indian food less than a mile from my house I'll gladly pay an extra 2-3 dollars per entree.
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
I wasn't too excited about this place after seeing all the reviews. Overall, the food was ok. I had the lamb biryani and was happy enough to bring home leftovers. As other reviewers mentioned, there weren't a lot of veggies mixed in as was advertised and the meat was a bit scarce. I was disappointed because the waiter didn't ask what spice level I wanted and I found it a bit bland. The curry with the shrimp puri was the most disappointing; it hardly had any flavor. My friend who got the chicken tikka masala said his food was bland as well. The waiter seemed apathetic at best. I asked well in advance for separate checks, but this request was ignored. I know it wasn't forgotten because he made reference to my request. If this is an improvement, then I don't want to know what it was like before.
google avatar

Sara Y.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from here, but it looks like a nice dining experience with dim lights and spacious tables. We ordered a few different things, not the best Indian food I've had in my life but they had my favorites such as eggplant pakora, okra Masala, and gobi manchurian. Good quality and nice portions, we will come back! EDIT: we did come eat inside and it was a great experience! Fast service, good food, nice ambiance.
google avatar

Jessie B.

Yelp
Food was too hot to enjoy. I really wanted a Marsala. I ate it all. Will give it another shot because I absolutely love Indian cuisine. I think it is the cure to CoVID because of all the great spices, ginger, turmeric, peppers. Etc...
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
I've been to a fair amount of Curry houses in my life and honestly this was one of the best. The only thing I will mentioned is how spicy everything was. I enjoy spicy and ordered a Medium + and it was mega spicy. Everything had wonderful flavors and cannot wait to come back. Staff were attentive and super friendly too! Loved loved loved.
google avatar

Marzia C.

Yelp
I was going to write a a long review about the horrible experience I had last night but others have hit the nail on the head about their poor service. I'll keep it brief: Literally gave people's orders to the wrong table - multiple times. What is up with decor? Is someone dying? So depressing. Waiter's eye roll was a nice touch. I'm pretty sure the kid that rolled his eyes at me was the owner's son. Waiter told me he was going to throw my plate at me and I should catch it. As a Bangali I'm usually all for supporting Bangali owned businesses but I'll definitely be telling my family and friends to stay clear of this place. This place is a really bad joke.
google avatar

Adam R.

Yelp
I am very disappointed with the take out order I placed/received yesterday. The food here is quite good however as you'll see in my picture I came home with a melted styrofoam-soupy mess. Regardless of how good their food is, had anyone chose to eat this they would be poisoning themselves. Styrofoam is terrible for the environment already!!!!! The soup smelled great too bad I could not enjoy it!
google avatar

Kyle K.

Yelp
Order was delivered 45 minutes late. Also extremely small portions for 45 dollars total. Palak paneer tasted burnt and was inedible. Butter chicken was fine but nothing special. Still cannot get over the extremely small portion sizes for the price. Even the chutneys were half filled. Naan was fine though.
google avatar

Francisco G.

Yelp
Food was horrible. I've been coming here since the restaurant was in Troy. Since moving to Ferndale it's changed owners a couple times, and since then the food progressively worse. I ordered a Beef Biryani, At noon, (meaning the food should've been fresh), my rice was very dry, and the beef was the kind from frozen taquitos (if you've ever had those). Thanks
google avatar

Geoffrey V.

Yelp
Terrible would sum it up, but I'll elaborate. Ordered 2 dishes, 2 appetizers and 2 naan. They said 20 to 30 mins. Waited for a total of 45. Food was awful. Butter chicken had ZERO, buttery flavor, none. Tasted a little like tomato sauce. The chicken was dry and had some pieces that I couldn't even chew. Naan, not even edible. Garlic naan? Soggy and flavorless. Samosas? Cold and soggy. No crunch to them at all and the meat tasted like taco seasoning. My wife had the matar paneer and the cheese was actually grey on the sides. More that half of the dinner went in the garbage . I do not recommend this place on any level. I can comfortably say this... it's the worst indian food I've had. Go anywhere else.
google avatar

Judy P.

Yelp
All time, favorite Indian restaurant in the Metro-Detroit area. I love their Korma.
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
I go there because it's close to home. Their tikka masala is more like tomato sauce. They need to make that more creamy! And their service is alright...definitely can be a little nicer and personable.
google avatar

Paris J.

Yelp
Great food and service! We ended up sharing a platter for two (that turned out to be more than enough food). The platter was made up of various dishes including a dessert so we were able to try a little of everything, which I thought was a great deal.
google avatar

Tia R.

Yelp
I ended up going in here on a whim because on a warm summer day, the /smells/ of this place draws you in. Honestly, they make the entire area around the block of them smell like delicious Indian spices. I dined in by myself, and the employees were very friendly and very attentive to me. It was a quick in and out kind of service, which I appreciated since I was by myself on an errand trip. The food was good, but as others have mentioned, not as blazingly spicy as some other Indian restaurants are. I didn't really have any complaints, and I appreciated their hospitality.
google avatar

Alicia S.

Yelp
Discovered this gem through a Groupon deal. Went there on a Tuesday night and the dining-in crowd was light, but the pickup/takeout was non-stop. Service was excellent with attentive waiters who know the menu. To this day, my boyfriend and I joke about spicy level because when we order led medium, rather than mild plus or medium plus, we thought we'd be okay. Whoa - the spice was hot! We love buffalo sauce and spice, but have a rule that we want to taste our food. Well, I'm not complaining as it was a learning and only impacted a single dish we ordered for sharing (lamb with rice). The proportions were so large that we were able to take the other to go and cool down with a yogurt sauce. Loved the food and the people. Will be returning...

Maria F.

Yelp
They have improved quite a bit. They even offer a vegan menu now which I really appreciate. Loved their Chana masala, Chana saag, aloo mutter Gobi, gobi Manchuria. Their curry runs on the hotter side. I usually like medium curry, but here I order it mild. Be warned if you get it hot! It comes very spicy. We will definitely keep coming back.
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
Ok went here for the first time ever, and was very happy. Food was delicious a good amount of spice. My wife and and I really enjoyed the Lamb Vindaloo and Manchurian Gobi. Can't wait to try more.

Nicki M.

Yelp
We have ordered here a couple of times now and have yet to be disappointed. The order has been correct and delish each time. Definitely one of our favorites so far.
google avatar

Kya B.

Yelp
Absolutely scrumptious. The food was delicious and my stomach is satisfied. 10/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Ashley F.

Yelp
I use to eat here all the time and loved it. I am not sure what changed but nothing taste the same and it's actually pretty terrible. The service was slow and the food lacked taste or was completely seasoned wrong. Don't eat here. We left all of our food because we couldn't bring ourselves to eat it. The naan tastes dry and flavorless. The rice was had dried pieces in it. The food look like it say around for hours. They don't even know there own menu. As someone who use to frequent this place I know what is in the special I get however that is not what I was provided.

Ajay J.

Yelp
I have been to 500+ Indian restaurants around the world and this one tops the list of worst restaurants I have encountered. The staff is always busy on there phone and asking them for anything seems like a pain for them. Food is horrible as I ordered vegetable stuffed parathas which cam half cooked and rather than whole wheat flour they were cooked with maida flour. All the Indian restaurants offered raita and pickles with stuffed parathas but here it came just like that and when I asked for pickles ( 2 slices) and raita ( which was nothing but curd in a very very small bowl with salt added ) , they charged me almost $5 for the same . I believe that rather than "Star of India", they are the "Shame of India ". In addition , you have to pay parking to park on the road outside and they never tell you ( even after asking) that there are free parkings available on the back side.
google avatar

Kelly W.

Yelp
We were extremely long time fans. Gone here for years and sworn up and down about their food. Until last time... no joke there was an obscene amount of human hair in my food. I have long hair so I know it's hard to control and am more tolerant than most id think, but this was something else. There were three big clumps of hair in our dish. Either it was on purpose or they have some insanely bad hygiene issues in their kitchen. The thought of going back makes my stomach turn.
google avatar

Randall S.

Yelp
This was my first time having Star of India, and definitely my last. I ordered the chicken tikka masala with a side of rice, as well as a side of garlic naan. The chicken tikka masala was a dark brown and super greasy. It actually looked more like beef chili, and the rest of the food was alright. This was not worth $17.
google avatar

Mary O.

Yelp
I love Indian food, and I've tried a lot from different places across the U.S. This is probably my favorite of all of them. I get food from here A LOT, and I've never had any problems other reviews mention. Definitely recommend.

Margaret H.

Yelp
This place has really good, authentic Indian food. Their lamb vindaloo is one of best in the original. On a cold day when I'm craving Indian food, this place will not disappoint. The outside looks a little shabby, but don't let the exterior fool you. The palek paneer could have had more paneer, but the flavor is very good.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
I've had better. A lot better. I ordered some butter chicken which I understand is a real basic flex but it tastes like someone poured a can of condensed tomato soup over some chicken. It's ridiculously sweet. I am getting zero spices. No cumin, no turmeric, no coriander, nothing. Is this my fault because I ordered mild? I just didn't want it mouth-numbingly spicy. Also, they're not joking when they say mild they mean MILD. Everywhere else, when I order mild I get medium. It's not for me; I won't be returning.
google avatar

Pete P.

Yelp
Stopped in here for dinner as I was in the area. I have been to the Star of India in Toledo (sister restaurant) and was very impressed with the food down there. The food is equally as good in Royal Oak however, the service is really lacking in RO. I had the chicken tikka masala and it was very tasty and delicious. But when you're treated like a second class citizen it is really a turnoff. I doubt I'll be back given the plethora of food options in Royal Oak.
google avatar

Stacy H.

Yelp
I haven't had a ton of Indian food, but I know I like Star of India. Can't go wrong with the staple chicken Tikka masala or butter chicken! Always order with naan.... Perfect comfort food!
google avatar

E V.

Yelp
Ordered the tandoori chicken biryani which is described as having "chicken, peas, and almonds." There were about 5 pieces of chicken in the whole thing, and not a single pea or almond to be found. Additionally the puri was dripping with grease. Last time I ordered from here was much better. Don't know what happened but I see a lot of similar reviews.
google avatar

Meredith B.

Yelp
I seriously don't get the bad rating in this place. I LOVE it! First off, the service is awesome. Family run, attentive and friendly. Second, the food is pretty fab. I was a vegetarian and their menu has plenty of options. Not only are there full meals but also there are vegetable sides so I can get a variety of dishes! One thing I'm about to try this time that I haven't had before: dessert. Unfortunately they were out of the golub jamon (sp? - cheese balls in sweet syrup!) so I went with rice pudding. We'll see!
google avatar

Benny B.

Yelp
I've been meaning to go here forever. Finally tried the lunch buffet today. The buffet is pretty small, not many options and nothing seemed fresh. My guess is that it was the same food from the day before as it all (even the saucy dishes) seemed dried up and reheated. Bummer.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
The place didn't have good reviews but we were willing to try it anyway It started out with no one acknowledging us, ok, maybe he was busy I thought... 2 other couples there.... We continued to wait for the waiter, who after some time walked over to the table in front of us and the girl told him she didn't get her food. He then walked to the table behind us, looked at the food in front of the people, grabbed the plate from the girl with a scowl and said "this isn't your food!". She seemed hurt replying "I didn't know!" We had been waiting for 10 minutes and for all that time the food had been in front of the girl! He then took it to the other couple and asked the girl if she still wanted it, she said - "yeah, but can you make another one?" He seemed insistent that she should take this one.... I can't tell you what happened next because we ran out of that place
google avatar

Evan S.

Yelp
Excellent food at reasonable prices with large portions andcgood service. We had four first time patrons and we all enjoyed our meals and would go back.

Tom H.

Yelp
My first time to Star of India, so I ordered the tandoori mixed grill with medium heat to try a variety of their dishes. Also ordered Keema Naan and the onion chutney. Everything was absolutely delicious! The meats were cooked perfectly, nicely spiced and fork tender. Probably the tastiest shrimp that I have ever eaten. The Naan was scrumptious and I am eating the onion chutney all by itself as I write this.
google avatar

Kelly I.

Yelp
Wow. It felt like I was in a back alley restaurant in NYC or India itself. Flies everywhere during dinner. I can't imagine how many were in my food. The odd taste of too much garam masala in the curry, the fried naan, the stale tandoori chicken were all off putting. We ordered the dinner combo for two at a total of $37.00 for two which included two curries, samosa, 2 soups, 2 desserts, rice and naan. I really love supporting local businesses and especially Indian cuisine but, without a doubt I will never return here. Crossing my fingers hoping I don't get the shits tomorrow but the queasy feeling of nausea overcoming me right now tells me I'm in for a rough night. The only redeeming quality was the daal soup and mulligatawny soup at the beginning.
google avatar

Sam V.

Yelp
God, I love this place. I've had the same order since I was a kid, and it still states the same, and it's still great. I wish there were a place like this where I live.
google avatar

Lindsay B.

Yelp
We've given this place more chances than we probably should have, and I can tell you after this last meal we are done trying. I so wanted this place to improve. It's close by and I love Indian food. I know what malai kofta is supposed to taste like, and it's not this sweet yellow sauce with hard vegetable balls they tried to pass as malai kofta. The sauce was bright yellow, sickening sweet with no depth. The cheese in the matar paneer was rubbery and the sauce, again, tasted like the only ingredient was sugar. The garlic naan was super soggy and the raita was barely a step above water with slivers of cucumber in it. Food is way worse than ever. If you are hoping for mediocre Indian, this place doesn't even hit that mark. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Yelp
Very affordable and good Indian food, I love how they prepared their chicken tandoori with just two big pieces of chicken instead of a bunch of small drumsticks. And the sauce of my boyfriend's butter chicken is just right off the back beating some high-cost Indian restaurant down.

Yelp
This is my new favorite place. Service and food was amazing!!! Price is great for the amount of food, we left with a box each for a second meal! Great atmosphere.
