"In Ferndale, my father's restaurant, Star of India, which he has owned and operated since 2014, was where I briefly worked in the kitchen when I was 17, though I did not enjoy it because there were too many people and I prefer to cook alone. My father immigrated from Bangladesh in the 1990s at 16 and spent much of his early career working in Italian restaurants; he taught me his favorite lasagna recipe when I was 13, showing how tomato pairs so well with spices after he reinvented it by adding red chili, turmeric, cayenne, curry powder, and cumin. His cooking continues to influence me, and while I feature Italian dishes and South Asian–Italian hybrids on my channel, I don't aspire to work in a restaurant kitchen again." - Kim Hew-Low
