"In Ferndale, my father's restaurant, Star of India, which he has owned and operated since 2014, was where I briefly worked in the kitchen when I was 17, though I did not enjoy it because there were too many people and I prefer to cook alone. My father immigrated from Bangladesh in the 1990s at 16 and spent much of his early career working in Italian restaurants; he taught me his favorite lasagna recipe when I was 13, showing how tomato pairs so well with spices after he reinvented it by adding red chili, turmeric, cayenne, curry powder, and cumin.
