I've enjoyed the food from Starbird Chicken ever since they expanded to SoCal from the other side of the Golden State. This is the first physical streetside location in SoCal, but they actually had a couple of ghost kitchens before opening this one in Hermosa Beach on the southwest corner of 5th and PCH.
Like I said, I like the food, but there always seems to be a myriad of issues that they have with every order I place, either online or in person.
My first visit to this location was shortly after they opened, and I was hoping to order the boneless wings*, but there was an error in the pricing at the kiosk. Like the price would initially say $14.77, but then at checkout, it jumped to $15.97! Studying the rest of the menu, I could tell the higher price was the correct one, but this error really messed with me because I thought I could have saved $1.20 here.
I do recall on that first visit, one of the Starbird employees, who may have been the manager on duty, was super helpful to me and even threw in some extra sauces for me. She also let me sample one of the flavors, and when I was coughing uncontrollably, she fetched me a cup of water. Needless to say, I definitely appreciated all this.
However, on my last visit, I was so unsatisfied that I almost would have given a 1 here, but since I had a much better first visit, I'm awarding a second star instead.
I placed a couple of orders online to redeem a couple of rewards that were going to expire soon. It's something I like to do at Starbird since this is the closest location to me, and I have to drive a long way just to get there. Not only do I have to estimate my time of arrival, but I also have to hope that I don't hit too many red lights on surface streets.
I got real lucky and arrived right when my phone texted me that my order was ready. I was hoping that was a sign of good things to come, but unfortunately, it was just not meant to be :(
As soon as I went up to the pickup counter, I told them my name for pickup and that I had two orders. They still needed a couple of minutes to finish off my orders. Then why did I get the text saying my order was ready then? I guess it was because in my special instructions for the Banh Mi Chicken Salad, I requested for the noodles, shallots, and dressing to be on the side. I also added an optional note to put the rest of the toppings on the side if possible, and luckily, they obliged, though the cashier did ask me for clarification about that.
After only a couple of minutes, the cashier handed me two white paper bags sans handles rather than the traditional Starbird bags with their logo. I don't know if this is a cost cutting measure, but I really didn't like the idea of white paper bags, especially for the Banh Mi Chicken Salad. Starbird's salads are quite large, so the cashier had to flip it on its side to get it to fit in the white bag. Did they really do away with the larger bags with handles? If so, boo!
I was planning on saving the salad for lunch the next day and eating my other order there. My other order was the Seoul Star Sandwich with Grilled Chicken, a $1 upcharge from crispy chicken. I like Starbird's crispy chicken, which is deep-fried in rice bran oil, but switched to grilled because I'm avoiding fried food for the time being. In addition to the sandwich, I wanted to try their rainbow slaw, which is a $2.97 upcharge, but $1 less than that of the House Fries. I wish they would offer combo meals for their sandwiches, but the sides are a la carte at Starbird.
I like Korean chicken sandwiches, but this one was lackluster. The grilled chicken was pretty dry, and I didn't really taste much Korean in the sandwich. As a result, I had to use a ketchup packet, which I really hope I'm not committing sacrilege by using Heinz instead of Gochujang or something of the like.
Before I started my sandwich, I saw an umbrella in the outdoor patio had toppled over. While I was finishing my sandwich, that umbrella succumbed to the windy weather and even knocked a chair aside! And not a single employee bothered to tend to that. If a customer was eating there, he/she could have gotten hurt, but luckily, nobody was dining al fresco. I really hope use of umbrellas with weak wind resistance isn't another cost cutting measure Starbird is utilizing and that they don't put emphasis on profits over safety.
As for the salad, I did like it overall, but I'm curious how some breaded chicken made its way into my salad, both in the bowl as well as in the side of carrots? Another sign of carelessness if you ask me; I wouldn't be surprised if cross contamination was not uncommon here.
Overall, I was displeased having driven so far for a disappointment of a sandwich and a salad that contained foreign substances that I was okay with eating a little bit of, but wouldn't have wanted if I had the choice. Won't be back for a long while.
* Starbird no longer offers boneless wings; they have since been replaced with chicken nuggets.
