A Customer Punched and Injured Workers at Pittsburg Bakery Starbread - Eater SF

Best Restaurants in Concord and Pleasant Hill | Eater SF

"The star of Starbread Bakery is their famous señorita bread. Since 1988, this family-owned Filipino bakery with multiple locations (Vallejo, Newark, San Pablo, and Pleasant Hill among them) has been serving these sweet treats made of rolled enriched dough, lightly filled with butter and sugar, and served piping hot. At the Pleasant Hill shop, the bakery case also features dazzlingly-colored purple ube loaf (choose from square slice or wedge shaped), rainbow-sprinkled donuts, and brownies. For those with a savory tooth, try the habit-forming garlic peanuts, which have large nubbins of fried garlic cloves scattered throughout." - Rebecca Shea

Amazing bakery, delicious Filipino pastries and wonderful customer service! I always love supporting locally owned businesses and Starbread is certainly no exception! :)

Very cute and clean shop. Young woman working the front was so warm and happy. She was a joy to chat with. The senorita bread can AND WILL cause a problem because they are SO DELICIOUS! They are served warm, they are buttery sweet little pockets of love and you really gotta make sure to get enough because you inhale them and look down in your bag and somehow have devoured them in a blink of an eye. I went back two days in a row. That's how good the bread is. Treat yourself and go get you some!

Google
First time in the area and discovered this little bakery. I got quite a few different types of goodies, all at a great price and delish! I loved that many of their treats included ube (purple yam). However, my favorite was their spinach feta. (Sorry, no picture since I inhaled it before I even thought to add a review.) The man working the counter was very nice. He offered to heat them up before I took it with me. He also wrote what the flavors were on the bag since I got some that looked the same. I feel like many places miss this tiny, yet crucial detail so I was glad he did that without me asking. COVID safety: All food was stored behind the glass, worker wore a mask and used tongs, there was a plexi glass shield at the counter for checkout. Overall: Fast, convenient, and delicious; I'd definitely be back again if I'm in the area.

I don't know why this place doesn't put enough of the sweet sauce or whatever it is, in the star bread. My son picked some up for the family and they were so dry, barely any sauce which left no flavor. I've mentioned this to the employee working there a long time ago and he says he hears the opposite, people tell him it's too much. I guarantee you, it's not. Not nearly enough. Go to the next nearest location to get some, you'll see AND taste the difference. It's too bad bc every time we give it another try hoping it would be different, it's always the same or worse than before. We really like star bread and would order more often but it's not worth it, you're not getting that sweet flavor that's supposed to come with the bread. I really wish they would change it and add more. It's probably cost saving to them by using less ingredients but it's completely changing the product.. Not worth the savings when it's deterring people from buying. My whole family noticed without me even saying anything. Ages 7 - 40 +... How could they all say the same thing if it weren't true.

I heard about this place and I have to admit that what I heard was right! The señorita bread is so yummmmmy!!! They're small, light and sweet. I strongly recommend having not one, but several with a cup of coffee!!

Google
So far my two experiences here has been hella good! The bread comes out freshly baked and glistening with butter and syrup or whatever that’s on there. I was there last Sunday when this man yelled at the lady giving the orders. He said “Where’s my bread!!??” And then proceeded to argue with the lady that she took his order and that the woman after me had gotten her bread. She didn’t take his order but he kept arguing that she did. She then told him that that lady did not get bread and that she got donuts . It was hard to tell the cashier apart from the person giving away the bread because they all had masks on and similar hair. He was upset because he thought the woman after me came out with two boxes of señorita bread but it was actually donuts. A few seconds after him being rude and making a scene he received his order. His son who was about 12 years old said, “SEE DAD! You didn’t have to do that!” Lol. The woman and I laughed. The dad never apologized!! We hoped that “man” learned a lesson! But I doubt it. He was so mean! I’m just happy to know that his son is not like him. Him being rude wasn’t necessary. I too wondered if the woman after me got señorita bread, but I thought maybe she ordered it before I got there and was just picking it up. I didn’t go crazy like that man. If I was that curious, I would have simply asked for the status of my order. Not yell out “where is my bread!!??”

Google
Helpful counter people keep it light and happy. They have decided as long as they keep making their sweet breads and goodies that happy days are here again! And they’re right.

Yelp
if you haven't had star-bread at all, you most def are missing out. the bakery in pittsburg is small, yet full of life inside with decor and pastries. you need to always get their star-bread ever time, and you can get from small amounts to large quantities their ham and cheese croissants are elite, and paired with a white mocha coffee, you are set for a great day. customer service is always lovely as well sister enjoys coming here very often, so she is a dub for inviting me this time around
google avatar

Yelp
I've heard about señorita bread forever now, but never managed to go and try it, until I happened to be in Pittsburg today and decided to stop in. Thankfully, I only got one little piece, and I absolutely devoured it when I got to the car. It was slightly sweet and puffy and buttery, and just perfection! Thank goodness I only got one because if I had any more, I'd devour them all too, that's how good it was! I also got a malasada with Bavarian cream. The malasada itself was good, but I did not like the cream - though I'm pretty certain that's a personal preference and not a reflection of the quality here.

Yelp
Worth a trip to try the seniorita bread! I saw another Starbread after I visited this one so I had to look up their story (there's a good writeup in the Mercury News) -- This is a local chain which started in Vallejo and has expanded across California, so find the location near you.

Yelp
This my go to place for my fix on Senorita bread rolls. They are always warm when you get them. A great thing to bring to gathering & parties. Warms up great in the microwave. A great morning snack with coffee. And in expensive. People get there pretty early in the mornings on weekends, but no matter what time you go the bread is always warm.
google avatar

Yelp
Heaven on earth! This delicious señorita bread right from the oven is so addictive! The quality is consistent and the bread is soft and delicious! So glad this place is open !! Getting some for Easter dinner!
google avatar

Yelp
Sunday yumsssssss. I woke up on a boat in the Delta scraped myself back into my car and drove into this bakery. It was like entering heaven. The Hawaiian ham mozzarella and the guava cheese are to die for

Jay R.

Yelp
Love this place's baking especially when eaten warm !!! Just too bad they close at 5:00pm

Akosita T.

Yelp
The senorita bread is literally THE BEST! Service is always A1!! Love coming in to Starbread!
google avatar

Daniel G.

Yelp
New management? New ownership? I'm not sure, but always a different experience with starbread. I've seen they've franchised in socal which is always a good sign. The senorita bread is hit or miss. Sometimes stale, sometimes fresh. I'd like to see their bread be fresh consistently. I hope the employees are being taken care of! I wish to see this business boom in the future, just like the old days! Good for work, good for coffee! Ambiance is quiet and the place is small! Not always busy every time I come to pick up bread.
google avatar

Crissy M.

Yelp
You've guessed it, their señoritas are mouth-watering! But I've also brought some savory goodness for my co-workers this morning. The empanadas are yummers! We've also tried their ham and cheese and adobo pork buns and they were okay. Most definitely, I'll come back here for their señoritas! Staff are friendly and efficient, so I was in and out. Also lesson learned, if you wanted empanadas for a large group, it's best to call it in. But to cut it short, co-workers still like what I got them. Win!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Been coming to this place since I was in high school, an old friend of mine showed me this place and I absolutely fell in love with this place! I love bread so this place will always have a special place in my heart!! Did I mention they have awesome prices for a good amount of bread pieces? A few bucks will get you a good amount of bread! The bread is sweet and a bit oily and made fresh! A great stop for a quick grab and go!
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
I've ordered from here numerous times over many years so Yelp can't say my review isn't related to my experiences here. It's always been good. The staff has always been quick to give me my bulk orders of señorita bread even though they get slammed with a ton. I've never had a negative experience and it's always tasted good. Ok, now the juiced up elephant in the room. Don't be a douchebag like the petulant man baby that threw a temper tantrum here the other day. Reportedly, he cried and destroyed the donut display because he wouldn't follow Starbread's COVID protocols. Even before the pandemic, businesses had signs up that they can refuse you service. It's not a new thing unless you're an idiot. I promise you that doing... exactly what that weirdo did won't help your case when you want businesses to provide you a service. And you're also being a prick to the employees that have to put up with your toddler mentality in a grown man body. How embarrassing. What I said is even an insult to toddlers because many are better behaved than that. Get you some home training before you go out in public. Yeesh.

Yelp
Read the reviews on this bakery, almost every review is about the seniorita bread, I went in and asked what's so special about the bread, the cashier man was so friendly that he offered to give me and my friend one each to try. I like it so much especially the buttery taste and the soft texture. Immediately I ordered a box home. I also had the ube donut, it's okay, except the ube was kind of too few in the center, I have to take several bites in order to taste it. Overall it's a great bakery with friendly service
google avatar

Sonila S.

Yelp
Star bread is good when you get it fresh. very delicious but it's not that good the next day. A small batch is perfect for anyone.
google avatar

Yelp
Been going to there branch in South SF when we still lives in the Bay Area. But now we live in Central Valley, we are so glad that they have a branch in Tracy. There señoritas are THE BOMB.... it is soooo yummy. Also good for potluck.

Yelp
This Starbread is closer to my work do sometimes I come here if I'm craving fresh seniorita bread before I clock in! We've also pitched in to contribute a big box for our coworkers! The senorita bread is to die for! It's absolutely delish when it's fresh and warm. The butter and sugar just drips out of the rolls and thinking about it right now just makes my tummy growl and want some right now! The service was very fast! I walk in the early morning around 7am and I get my order after they take it. They have to head to the back to pack the box with the amount of bread I want but they bring it to me very quickly! The location of the store has a lot of parking because its in the plaza. I absolutely love the pothos plant in the store, the vines are so long and looking at it makes the store aesthetically pleasing. You definitely need to stop by here if you live in Pittsburg! Luckily I live in Vallejo where there is also a Starbread so I can spoil myself with these treats at home and at work!
google avatar

Marlee B.

Yelp
Hot senorita bread! Thats all i can say. Packed to order so its always fresh. Plenty of parking, accepts multiple methods of payment
google avatar

Kamika T.

Yelp
I came here for senorita bread for our drive back to vegas and the service was great! The guy who helped me also let me know that there is a location in vegas on Windmill pkwy! I am super excited to know that I can get some closer to home. I got a 20 piece and it was perfect for the ride. I definitely recommend coming here!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Family owned business throughout the Bay Area. This particular location, the family is very kind and sweet. They're always busy so I know it can get tiring with long hours, but they hold together well and are happy to serve! I know what the bread tastes like, so it's definitely a 10/10. Each starbread has their own specialty pastries. We really like the Adobo Buns. Our new favorite is the spinach feta pasty, it's really good. The ambience is like a laid back homey bakery. True to craft, family friendly and tasty. Thanks for being apart of Pittsburg filipino community!
google avatar

Rick T.

Yelp
Service is always excellent here. Love the variety of pastries they have and the best thing is definitely the freshly made seniorita bread. So addicting you can't just eat one.
google avatar

Margie L.

Yelp
We tried the famous senorita bread and it was very sweet. The kids loved it and they couldn't stop eating it. We also got the pan de sal and it was good as well. Only downside is that they don't have more locations closer to where I live.
google avatar

Yelp
Updated to add: I saw on the news, an evil man who did not want to wear his mask or follow Covid protocol went bezerk and had a temper tantrum destroying the store, breaking things and attacking the poor employees! He shut the door on a woman's arm breaking it ( she is in a cast now) and beat the other employees! To do this over a small thing, is pure evil! We, as a community, need to stand up against senseless violence and we need to support our local businesses!!! So STAND with ME and go buy some of their delicious Starbread( my kids love this), empanadas, lumpia, scones, croissants, muffins, etc! Have their specialty coffees and enjoy a breakfast or snack! One tip is they run out of some baked goods often even by 10 am or so, so go early if you can! I mean 6 AM is too early for me, but I will try to go a little earlier so I get the good stuff lol! I think usually lumpia seems to be out first, and they seem to have plenty of StarBread! Whatever it is, support this local bakery and good, hardworking people! I hope they catch this guy and he must be in our area- so Google ABC 7 news and StarBread Bakery and maybe you can see the video and turn in the guy if you recognize him- do what is RIGHT, people!!!

Yelp
It's been quiet a while since I've had Señorita Bread and as soon as I took that first bite, maaaaaaaan!!! They never disappoint. Always hot and fresh, made perfectly with the outside nicely toasted, inside is light and fluffy with the buttery sugar glaze they smear it with before rolling. It actually reminds me of these particular butter rolls I would have as a kid growing up in Hawai'i. I was just back home less than a week ago and all the places I previously got my butter roll from were no longer in business. So sad. Therefore, having my fix of Señorita Bread from Starbread was an absolute WIN! If you haven't had this, I definitely recommend you give it a shot.

Hakeem B.

Yelp
Friendly as always. Get there early so the spinach tart isn't sold out. Word life son.
google avatar

Illiena V.

Yelp
I don't get the sweet bread taste- but the malasadas are the bomb!!!! Everything is very fresh, lines out the door every morning- this is a local gem.
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
Amazing every single time for some tasty hot bread! Reasonably priced and service is always good! Highly recommended.
google avatar

Yelp
There is absolutely nothing in the world that can compare! There are copy cats like Nanding's (living in Hawaii), Valerio's but our family favorite is right here in my hometown.
google avatar

Jerico C.

Yelp
This was my first experience trying out Starbread Bakery and it definitely won't be my last! Came in this morning to buy a box of the senioritas and they are definitely worth the hype! Staff was very friendly and offered to answer any questions I had. Check out this gem next time you're in the area!

Yelp
Comforting, warm, sweet bite-sized pillows of joy is the best way to describe senorita bread. Anyone who doesn't like senorita bread; we could not be friends. That's the first and most important item sold at Starbread Bakery. That item alone makes Starbread a five star experience. But there are other items: Ham & Cheese bread: this is a tasty snack. Everything is on the small side which goes for this item as well. I'd love if they made this bigger in size. Beef Empanada: this empanada has a sweet taste to the pastry along with a real starchy filling. I'd probably pass on this item. It's forgettable. Chicken and beef buns: these are meat, peas, and potatoes in the same sweet bread. Decent taste-wise. Prices are low. While everything is decent to good in taste, it's really all about the senorita bread. Come early for lumpia because they sell out fast.
google avatar

Vincent V.

Yelp
Put this place on the dam map as a place to go to. As a must go to! First time trying it. Bought 200 next day brought it to work for co workers to call it Jesus bread. After that first time was asked every weekend to bring it. Had co workers at waiting at the gate. That buttery sugar of deliciousness. And I was able to get that big account at 6 am. So yea no excuses I even got 60 box brought it back to Reno and my kids devoured it in 30 minutes. That Crystal buttery sugar you'll never forget it.
google avatar

Just M B.

Yelp
The people are the best. You will always feel that they know you personally. The place is always clean and the bread is always warm. 2 things that will make this perfect: 1) variety, and 2) price. I know about margins and if I have to guess, I'd start in the mid 30s.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Fresh baked bread at a reasonable price! Easy access and ample parking. And their starbread is a guilty pleasure!
google avatar

MaryAnn A.

Yelp
The senorita bread is always so fresh!! I came in and got 150 pieces of it at 7am and they were open and ready! Love this place!
google avatar

Pirelli Guide S.

Yelp
Two words: Señorita bread. One question: How is legal? I'm convinced these delectable little pieces of heaven are made by angels. The are bite-sized (maybe not to everyone), warm, sweet, buttery, fluffy, doughy, and come perfectly packaged in a box, so it feels just like Christmas morning when you open it up (in your car and eat most of them before leaving the parking lot.) The smell alone is euphoric. The box should come with a warning: highly addictive. Also, the man who is usually working at this location is as pleasant as a pastry. ! FIVE STARS FOR STARBREAD !
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Excellent customer service, quick and easy to order. Overall, I love everything they have to offer and the bread is amazing.
google avatar

Bee D.

Yelp
Usually if the product is lackluster but the customer service is cool, I might give you another try to see if the product has improved and if it hasn't, then I might just roast yo ass on Yelp. However, with this particular Starbread, the drugs they supplied me with that come in a form of a hot, buttery, sugary, fluffy, squishy piece of goodness that squirts in your mouth after the first bite (pause - getcho mind out the gutter, we ain't talking about those kinda goodies) But I love coming here. Not just for the fluffy yummy buttery sugary goodness in the Señorita bread... but it's the customer service that keeps me coming back. The folks behind the counter are some of the nicest human beings you could ever meet. Very respectful. and about that Señorita bread... I'll be back tomorrow for my issue.

Yelp
I'm hooked The lady fingers are delicious always very happy to see Delicious and they treat their customers with respect very nice
google avatar

Carmelo P.

Yelp
I don't condone violence. I had the same experience with the lady owner about a year ago. She was rude. The last time I was there (and the last, never will return), she called me out on a condescending tone bec my mask fell just below my nose. I told her, she was disrespectful. She could have said it in a nice way. I just left and I did not buy. I will never forget how rude she was. When I saw in the news, the man's tirade in the store, it reminded me on how I was treated. Be nice to your customers, we also makes me mistakes.

Edsel B.

Yelp
Great Stuff to eat here, good hours Nice helpful people. And also has more than one location

Cathrina D.

Yelp
Their starred is great and cheap. Service is good - the clerk had a great smile. Ambience can be better. I go there when the craving seeps in!
google avatar

Dawna M.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try these guys out for awhile now. I use to get their Señorita bread, years ago at their Vallejo location. Once you have had the Señorita bread you will be coming back again & again.....I'm a night owl & bakeries ate not open at night... I was in Pittsburgh early today, so I had to go. My first time here, I open the door there's 3 customers in line & no room for another so I wait a few moments out side until there room. There is no social distancing here. I'm looking at what they have available & they had a lot of yummy looking goodies. I orders mango ham jalapeño cheese croissant A butter spinach feta cheese croissant and a pepperoni jalapeño cheese croissant a dolce de Leche donut thing sugary yummy and 10 pieces of their Señorita bread that's yummy with honey and butter. $16.50 was my total. Everything was really fresh although I wasn't really through enthused with the flavors of the mango croissant or the pepperoni it was a little different I would definitely try them again but the señorita bread is definitely by far my favorite I would recommend that you get some of that right now. Oh and the customer service was very top notch they also have coffee beverages you can choose from... go early to get a good choice of fresh backed treats ..
google avatar

Leigh R.

Yelp
Go-go bakeshop after (or before) a fun day at Small World Park! Just a note that the shop is very small and take out only.

Alika P.

Yelp
My coworkers has never turned down the starred and the señorita bread. This is by far a game changer for your office or your event highly recommend visiting Starbread.

Kiara B.

Yelp
Love it ! The Señorita Bread will always be my comfort food . Especially warm and fresh , the texture and flavor are just perfect.
google avatar

Danielle F.

Yelp
Senioritas are the BEST from here, I won't get them anywhere else. Bring a box of them to work and everyone eats them! The employees are always so nice too!
google avatar

Kev H.

Yelp
Wow, here you definitely get fresh señorita bread every day!!! I didn't know bread with only butter and sugar could taste this good. I do wish they had more variety and flavors, but I could appreciate places like this that specialize in one item if that one item turns out to be outstanding. The señorita bread was super fresh and probably also baked to order. When we got our bread, it was piping hot (as we were warned so by staff), and the bread was super soft and fresh. The sweet buttery goodness was just melting in my mouth with each bite. It was so heavenly. The pricing was pretty simple, so basically each increment of five was a $3 cost, and 15+ orders would come in boxes - otherwise, they'd come in bags . It was that simple. I was hoping to get some other Filipino street food/snacks, but we went to the store pretty late in the afternoon, so they didn't have those anymore when we were at the store . I would definitely go back to get more of their señorita bread and some other Filipino goodies.
