Inside the Fight to Bring Restaurant-Bathroom Access to All | Eater

"Long described as a de facto “public restroom” in America, this ubiquitous coffee chain became the center of a national controversy after a widely shared 2018 video showed two Black men arrested at a Philadelphia location for waiting to meet a friend and asking to use the restroom; employees had refused non-customers and called the police, resulting in trespassing charges. The company later adopted a policy explicitly allowing anyone to linger in its stores and use restrooms without purchasing, but implementation has been uneven—reports say some New York City outlets still lock bathrooms or require secret codes. Store workers shoulder much of the restroom-maintenance burden (what one former employee called “Star Walks”), dealing with messes, overdoses and vandalism, and businesses often cite cost, hygiene and security concerns for restricting access. The chain’s situation highlights larger problems: a shortage of public toilets, the role of private businesses as gatekeepers to basic needs, and how restroom policing can intersect with racial bias and exclusion." - Jaya Saxena

Ruby took my order and was very professional. Waited about five minutes due to a rush which was actually quick due to how many people were there. Dirk made my order which was two caramel ribbon crunches, extra everything and it looked beautiful. Definitely wasn’t stingy which I also liked.

Riley took my order, I asked her about the Jalapeño Chicken Pocket and the ingredients she answered it honestly. Alex is being very quick with the mobile orders. Couldn’t catch the lady with the berets name but she was cleaning, doing an amazing job making sure that the store stays stocked and clean. Quinn is very informative and does amazing with keeping a conversation. Ordered a caramel ribbon crunch grande extra everything and a strawberry lemonade açaí, while waiting Alex informed me that my order would be coming up next giving me affirmation that I wouldn’t be waiting much longer. Daniel and Quinn both made my order definitely loved the quickness and extra amount they put into my caramel ribbon crunch. Quinn and Alex were both very helpful. Would love to see them again.

I walked there from my hotel in the morning and when I got there I urgently had to use the bathroom. It needed a code to get in. I asked someone at the counter for the code and was told that I would have to purchase something BEFORE they would give me the code. I was so insulted that I went to the CVS and used their restroom. They were very helpful. I was absolutely not dressed like a bum.

An incredibly busy and incredibly small Starbucks 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Your food & drink will be made quickly, but there is literally no room to work on your daily tasks indoors. People line the walls, windows, and entrance so that you basically order, receive your food, and get the heck outta there. Couldn't even find the bathroom :( This is unfortunate because I love working in coffee shops, but at least there are 4 other Starbucks in a 0.5 mile radius :)

Working a grueling 12hr shift at the hospital on a rainy day, it was bliss to know a Starbucks was near for a boost and to my surprise, I found a gem in this one! Story-time: I went in with big bright eyes looking for the drink with the most espresso to wake me up from my 3pm crash and I saw on the menu “ Cinnamon Carmel Cream Cold Brew”, sounds delightful right?!?! Well, I was terribly wrong! I ordered that drink with a shot of espresso in it to add some flair and my initial sip landed a mouth full of bitter tartiness that was SO hard to swallow. Luckily, my awesome Barista, Jenn, noticed my dismay and inquired about my thoughts on the drink. At first, I fibbed and told her it was great and I just needed maybe a cup of ice to water the taste down. She gave me ice but knew that wouldn’t do. She kindly offered to me make me another drink if I wasn’t satisfied so that I would be happy and I shared with her my two “go-to drinks” are Vanilla Bean Frap and Carmel Macchiato. She decided to give me something in the middle that she calls a “Cafe Vanilla” and it was Amazing with Carmel drizzle and whip cream, yum! To say the least, it tasted AMAZING and I left happy as a camper! This Starbucks gets 5 Stars for Customer Service and Jenn the Barista is awesome, thanks Starbucks!

Tight spaced. Only table with 2 high chairs is broken(good thing it has a signage) staff does not call out when your order is ready. Has merchandise for sale here.

Always check your mobile order before you leave. I didn’t realize they poured me sweetened bath water until I had already left. I’d like to know how someone could pour that in a cup and think to themselves “yeah that’s a coffee I should serve to someone.”

I’m saddened that this Starbucks location actually made me feel threatened by the staff unwarranted unprovoked unprofessional conduct. Upon entering, I felt as if something was off because the usual friendly staff was replaced. I was given my drink with a condescending tone twice only because the cashier entered the wrong order and then again after it was “corrected”. I was given the wrong bathroom code twice (seemingly intentionally). The bathroom appeared as if a tornado hit it! There was urine all over the seat and toilet paper scattered across the seat! I was surprised. Ally this transpired after 5:35pm Tuesday the 21st of May, 2024. Needless to say that I immediately threw away my drink for fear of intentional tampering. My time was wasted as was my money at this disgusting location that used be considered a gem. Btw I’m African American as was the baristas, all of them. Very disappointing 😟

Yelp
DRINKS A great location in Center City/Washington Square West. Service is quick and efficient, and I was in and out in less than 10 minutes upon ordering at the counter. I ordered a venti white chocolate mocha, and it was made well/standard, especially for the time it took. MOBILE ORDERING Mobile ordering is available, as I saw people coming to pick up orders by the counter, but when I opened the app, it said no orders were pick-up were available. SEATING There are about 3-5 two-person tables inside the store, but the place is mostly grab-and-go. PARKING Street parking is available but is paid and is very limited.

Yelp
This location in Washington square is amazing ! The team is amazing under the direction of heather the manager. The chill east going nature of this location is fantastic. This group of creatives is filled with diversity and lots of positive energy but Don't let their easy nature fool you. They are beast at the job they do their well with efficiency! They are well trained. I absolutely recommend this location! they are a bright spot in my day.

Yelp
So, no flack on the quality of the food or drinks that are served here; it's Starbucks, so you get what you get. But, I am especially not satisfied with one thing... there are no tables and seats here. At one point, I was here prior to an appointment across the street at Penn. It was perfect because there were tables and you could easily sit, read a book, and wait for your scheduled appointment time. Mind you that this was after COVID. But, as of late 2023, all of the tables were taken out for reasons I don't know. As a paying customer, this would have been a perfect place to wait. Instead, you are literally Forced to stand at a small booth and wait for another restaurant or coffee shop to open up. There are other Starbucks across the region that have tables and seats. What gives?

Yelp
Not sure why this place has mid to low reviews. Drinks are the same as any Starbucks, but the staff was so great! As soon as I walked in, Rick greeted me. Eman complimented my shirt and made friendly conversation during my order. He also asked a guy if he liked the new sink they just installed- it was so random, but so funny and a good conversation starter. I sat at the bar listening to an Audio book and 15 minutes later, Rick asked "How's your drink Eddie". So surprised he remembered my name. I very much liked the experience here!

Yelp
I don't understand why there's negative reviews about this Starbucks location when honestly, all I've had was amazing service with the very accommodating staff. It's located next to Penn Hospital and down the street from Jefferson, in a busy intersection where doctors and students come in for a cup of coffee -- you're going to have delays. If you're already late for classes/work, then why stop for coffee to add more to your lateness? It's YOUR job to prioritize your time, people. Not the staff. Stop being an entitled primadonna that huffs and puffs because they didn't make your very important coffee fast as possible. Anyway. I work around the area and got to know the staff fairly well! It's very busy there but the staff is always cheerful and make sure they've heard your order correctly, even apologizing when technology decides to backhand them out of the blue -- my coffee is always made perfectly and handed to me with a smile. The store itself is clean -- I always see staff members either cleaning or keeping their bar area free of spills or answering any question a customer has, even when they don't get it line. They have impeccable customer service when I sit there and people watch from time to time, even striking up several conversations with a few. They care about their customers as well as providing them with a tasteful beverage. 2/5:00 PM is when there's heavy foot traffic so if you're in a rush, make sure to order on the app!

Yelp
Great Starbucks, very typical. Really nice staff though. Very kind, very quick. Starbucks is always a great escape that's comfortable and familiar where ever you are.

Yelp
I continue to frequent this Starbucks even though they continue to drive me crazy. They are always out of dark roast coffee...I mean it's 9am how do you not have another pot brewing?? The line is always 5 or 6 people deep with only one register open. The staff is very friendly, but I feel like the efficiency is lacking. I now went at 8pm, they close at 9pm...again no dark roast coffee. With a hour till close the place was out of cream, no sugar and the floors were being mopped. I just don't get how this happens when you still have 1 hr till close.

Yelp
Simple Starbucks on the corner with friendly staff and convenient seating. The music can be quite loud so it's not the greatest spot for studying/reading quietly... but they offer cascara cold brue and for a Starbucks newbie like myself, it really hit the spot!

Yelp
Welcome to the schoolyard, where first impressions are all that matter. You trip on your shoelaces running down the hill and forever you'll be known as the kid who rolled headfirst down the playground slope. To that end, I agree with Kristine d.'s recent review of her interaction at this Starbucks. If this Starbucks isn't careful, they'll forever be known as the location with that one employee who finds the most basic tasks too complex to complete. His name, according to the several grumbling regulars behind me in the growing line, is Alberto. He will perpetually ask you to repeat your order, to scan your phone again. It's not a bashful, flustered "Sorry, I didn't hear you." It's an expectant, dismissive, "Again? Speak up." There is no apology in his tone, only entitlement, as if by ordering a tall coffee we are standing in the way of his efforts to do as little work as possible. It's always easy to tell when this particular employee is working register - which is all he ever seems to work - because the line will stretch twice as far as the average morning. Even his coworkers seem put-out by his enervated and apathetic pressing of buttons and mumbling of orders. "So that's a grande mocha, which comes to a total of..." "No," a customer says, "I ordered a tall latte." The manager in the background rolls her eyes and offers an apologetic smile.

Yelp
I love Starbucks. Forget what people say about Dunkin' Donuts--that's bilge water! I don't even drink coffee anymore, but they offer an array of herbal teas iced and hot, and lately I've been treating myself to dark chocolate-covered graham crackers. Don't judge. That being said, I must concur with many Yelp reviewers in noting that this branch is THE most inefficient location I've ever frequented. First, although the line is routinely interminably long, only ONE register is open. Employees appear to be milling about in the background doing who knows what. True, other baristas are busy filling ridiculously complicated drink orders ("Ummmm...I'll have a half-caf iced Americano with a splash of coconut milk, a smidge of soy, and the tears of the woman behind me in line who's screaming and pulling her hair out."), but still. The other day, two middle-aged women conferred with the cashier for 15 minutes as I waited (uncharacteristically) my turn patiently. Were they opening an offshore bank account, transferring money from their hedge fund to checking? No; for the life of me, I have no clue what the heck was happening, despite my earnest attempts at eavesdropping. Variations of this scenario are repeated daily, but this is the location closest to me. The workers here are very friendly, and I usually tip, but I take serious umbrage with the extremely poor service. I kind of enjoy getting worked up about stuff, so I'll totally continue to patronize this Starbucks, but still...
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Rude staff. I waited in line patiently behind a group of people and when I finally made it to the front of the register, the barista proceeds to take the order of a man to the far left of the counter. The barista tells me that I'm not in the right side of the line and I would have to go to the end of the line (that had gotten long in the time I waited) towards the left to be served. I had already waited in line where it was clearly formed and there was no indication that I wasn't in a proper line already. It was clear that I had been waiting there longer then the customer he had chosen to serve before me, but clearly that didn't matter. I left this establishment after being treated like that. There are better coffee shops that do value their customers and have better customer service.

Yelp
I used to frequent this Starbucks because it was so close to work, but like the other yelpers wrote, the staff is awful. I walk to the south street starbucks or the one on 10th and chestnut now because of this. Dont even try to pay with your phone, it will take five minutes for the cashier to figure out how to charge you and scan it. If you order food, especially food that needs to be heated, be prepared to ask about your order ten minutes later and have the staff admit that they forgot to prepare it. Alberto isnt the only sour grape... a couple of the staff members are starting to act like him. Bummer.

Anna B.

Yelp
I'm not a big fan of Starbucks in general, but when I stop in here, the employees are so friendly! My drinks with special instructions are always made correctly.
google avatar

Yelp
Placed a mobile order and it was ready even earlier than my app said! I walked right into the starbucks and my drink was waiting for me. I ordered a caramel macchiato and it was great! No complaints, thanks for the quick and great service!
google avatar

Lindsay K.

Yelp
This is one of the poorest run Starbucks I've ever been to. The staff are friendly but they are painfully slow are never effectively using their staff members. For example, there will be 20 people in line, 8 cups waiting to be made, 1 person trying to make all these orders and 2 people stocking sugar and coffee out in the floor and not making a single drink. This makes no sense. It is possible these people are not "trained baristas" but I'm not sure that makes my point any less relevant. This is a relatively busy location, they really need to be more efficient. I have been to far busier locations that run like well oiled machines- please help this location! Mobile orders? Good luck ! A lost cause at this locale.

Yelp
I do like this Starbucks, its convenient, most of the staff are amazing, and friendly, and always in good spirits. However they all cover for one employee that drags the whole place down. Alberto. Below is a typical order with Alberto. Me: Good morning. I would like a tall green tea, Zen, iced, plain with an everything bagel toasted with cream cheese, please. Alberto: You want tea? Me: Yes Alberto: what size? Me: Tall. Alberto: What kind of tea? Me: Zen. Alberto: Hot? Me: no, iced. Alberto: Anything else? Me: yes, an everything bagel, toasted with cream cheese. Alberto: Bagel? Me: yes. Alberto: plain? Me: no, everything. Alberto: Toasted with butter. Me: Toasted with cream cheese. Alberto: Toasted? Me: YES! Alberto: (gives a price that's different every day) I have never ordered anything else besides this combination. My friend who has been going 5 days a week for 7 years to this location, must repeat her order to him every time she goes. The rest of the staff will have her drink ready before Alberto even has a moment to pretend like he has never seen her before. If you walk in, and the line is stretched out to the back by the side door, or the bathrooms, it will be because Alberto is on a register. There is a unity that forms in this line. Everyone know him by name. Alberto. You can hear the grumbles and mumbles in the line as everyone waits patiently for their turn to order 1 cup of morning coffee, and be charged incorrectly, by Alberto. If you order Breakfast, a bagel or a sandwich, make sure he calls it to the employee working the toaster. He forgets every time to call it back, resulting sometimes in a free drink next time you come in, but usually you just end up getting a blank stare from Alberto because by that point he has forgotten who you are, and has no idea what you want from him.

Yelp
I love Starbucks, who doesn't? I've even worked there three times in my career during college. So I know how to make drinks correctly, and I can say that my drinks here have never been made quite correctly. Today especially, I left incredibly infuriated. I asked for a Passion Tea Lemonade with three pumps of Raspberry. The barista behind the bar made me a Passion Tea only with raspberry, and the minute I got it, I knew there was no lemonade in it. I watched her fill the shaker with water instead of lemonade right in front of me. When I confronted her about it, she told me I said only Passion Tea. The barista who rung me up backed me up, told her that I asked for lemonade with it, and instead of remaking me my drink, she poured out half of my watery passion tea that I had paid extra for with the raspberry and filled it half with lemonade. She didn't remake it, she just adlibbed. That's not how you make drinks, and it's an especially easy drink to make. Next time, don't jip me on my money. I won't be coming back here.
google avatar

Stephanie D.

Yelp
I like all the entertaining reviews for this place, though I can't say I have anything to add to them. We just came here for a grand latte and my usual "iced-venti-half-caf-Americano-with-three-pumps-sugar-free-Vanilla-with-light-ice-and-light-room" and left unscathed. This place was clean when we were there (a weekend) and our orders were quickly prepared and as-ordered. I do wonder if Yelpers are being a little hard on this guy Alberto. Even though I have never met him, I feel bad for him. No one knows his story, what goes on in his life, or what he might be dealing with. Nonetheless, judging from the gross disapproval of his patrons, I hope he is able to improve his performance or find a role that is suited to his occupational strengths.
google avatar

Meg T.

Yelp
Though the staff is very very nice, the actual shop itself leaves much to be desired. I understand that this is a busy spot, the floor is often dirty and the layout should have been re-designed because it doesn't flow well. Out of the starbucks' throughout Philly, this is definitely not the best. I go there just about every monday night before my acting class but not because I specifically choose this exact location- it's out of practicality and the fact that my class is across the street. If the interior matched the politeness of the staff, I would give it at least 3 or 4 stars but alas, they have a lot of work to do.
google avatar

Diane M.

Yelp
I really like this place. I don't care about the aesthetics. I'm just getting coffee and waiting for my daughter, for one reason or another.I sat in here off and on for hours ,some months ago, when my daughter was auditioning and kept getting callbacks. Eventually, and happily, she got the job. Yay!! The staff was as anxious as me as I sat there waiting. They are so friendly and upbeat. I'd rather deal w a floor that needs sweeping and has nice, cordial, funny people than vice versa. And the caramel brûlée was pretty good- though I will have to take out a second mortgage to afford another one. Starbucks' prices are too crazy, so this is a pure treat. And one more thing. Why is the smallest drink a "tall"? It boggles my little mind!
google avatar

Smrithi D.

Yelp
Ahhh Starbucks, my guilty pleasure. It never disappoints when I need the pick me up only a skinny Caramel vanilla can give me. There is usually alone at this one because it's so close to the hospital and other off its but service is usually quick and friendly. The everything bagel with cream cheese, the savory squares, or the veggie breakfast sandwich are all great additions to any drink (yes that bill will end up being $9/$10) If you haven't already- get the app and if you're not a fanatic, it will certainly make you into one.

Bianca N.

Yelp
The most slow paste Starbucks I've ever been too. I placed a mobile order which suppose to be done before I arrive. I ordered strawberry Refresher not much to do at 6:46am, 5 minutes went by I didn't say anything than 10mins went by I asked if I can get a refund and I asked the person at the register if he can just make it its one of the easiest drink to make there and he did. I just don't understand if no one is ordering he can at least jump to help. I miss the old crew they were always on point.
google avatar

Gina C.

Yelp
Sean, the manager, is very nice. They messed up my order is he was very nice and empathetic about it. Offered me a comp'd drink

Yelp
Stopped in here today on my way to the library. I visit Starbucks about once a week, but this was my first visit to this location. I'd have to say this is the slowest Starbucks I've been to in philly. 4 people behind the counter, 1 making drinks...took about 15 minutes to get my drink. The drink was great, but watching 1 guy make drinks for the lunch rush hour was agonizing. The other staff members were piling up people's orders and it was clear from other customer's faces and conversations, they were not pleased with the service.

A J.

Yelp
Sometimes there can be a long time, especially around 4pm during the week . However, after this rush, the store quiets downs and the baristas are always friendly. The Starbucks is the closest one the the hospital and is great to pick up treats. The baristas are very nice and make excellent drinks. There is always a slew of food and fresh baked goods to chose from. The seating is spacious, although the store could use a little bit of updating. The bathrooms are sub-par, but there really isn't anywhere else to go to the bathroom In the area so they serve their purpose.

stephen f.

Yelp
Not sure which was most unpleasant: the employee whining loudly about how terrible his life is, the overflowing trash cans, or the dirty floor. Not a highlight of the Starbucks empire.

Michael F.

Yelp
If you advertise that you open at 5 am then you should open at 5 am. The past few days I have been showing up at 6am and your not open. I guess I might have to find a new place for coffee

Hanna G.

Yelp
Yooooo WTF!!!! Yoooo how's that even possible! Yooooo! They have only one background music and yooooo it's so terrible! Yooooooo! I stayed here for 30 minutes! Yoooo that stupid song is driving me crazy yoooo! WTF
