"Starbucks announced today that it will open its first U.S. Signing Store — a location staffed by deaf and hard-of-hearing people along with allies — in Washington, D.C. The existing Starbucks store in Washington, D.C. at 6th and H Street NE will re-open in October with the new format. This Starbucks Signing Store is inspired by a similar store that opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2016 — and a team from Starbucks traveled to Malaysia to gain inspiration for best practices when opening the D.C. store. Unique features at the H Street NE store will include an open environment for communication and low glare reflective surfaces, along with exclusive artwork and a custom mug designed by a deaf artist. Deaf baristas will have ASL aprons embroidered by a deaf supplier, and hearing partners who sign will have an “I Sign” pin. All these initiatives were created and sponsored by the Deaf Leadership of the Starbucks Access Alliance. For Starbucks customers who aren’t fluent in ASL, the store will offer communication options for ordering and receiving beverages at the hand-off counter." - Adele Chapin

What an amazing experience. This team is so efficient! I had no idea how this particular location operated and instantly noticed how quiet it was with no overhead music but the place was packed! Quickly put it together and appreciated the barista at the register who handed me the pad. Thank you to the team and the company for the mission and execution of this Starbucks.

When I think accessibility, I think this. My experience here was amazing. The BEST Starbucks I have ever visited. If you don’t know sign language or newly learning, give it a try! No need to feel intimidated. This is a very welcoming environment. I would love to see more Starbucks like this one. So glad I made the trip here for this experience.

I had an amazing experience at the Starbucks in DC. They made me fresh coffee unlike any I've ever had before. Special thanks to Anna for her exceptional service. Highly recommend this location!

Google
Great Starbucks! The store was clean and had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Staff were friendly and professional. It was busy when I visited but drinks came up pretty quick. They have a monitor for customers to identify if their order is ready and pads for non-ASL folks to write orders. The bathroom was definitely not very clean but that seems to be a standard at any city Starbucks! A unique and inclusive Starbucks experience...highly recommend!

I was with a group for school and after touring gallaudet, we stopped here for a quick drink and all i can say, is we where greeted with smiles from beautiful people. I can say, it was probably the best Frappuccino I ever had. They we so nice, patient, and helpful as some of us struggled to sign our orders.

Very kind employees and efficient ordering system. A pleasant place to sit down and do work as well!

What can I say about Starbucks, there's nothing more to that is just a chain coffee. But this is the first Starbucks that I've been to that has only sign language on everything. If you don't know sign language, they have pads for you to write on. It was an awesome experience. Parking is tough to find around here.

Yelp
My sister is learning ASL and wanted to go to this Starbucks while we were in D.C. Walking in, it was, of course, very quiet! No music, no loud talking, just the sound of coffee being brewed and pastries being warmed up. If you don't know ASL, there are tablets to write down what you would like! My sister and I got our usual drinks and some food items. All items came out in a timely manner. Overall, a nice Starbucks experience! Very cool to see them have a store for folks who are apart of the deaf community. I hope to see more of these stores in the future!

Yelp
This is my favorite review yet. I have never seen such a beautifully ran, inclusive Starbucks in my life. Visiting this location made my heart so warm! It was my first stop after getting to DC and I am SO grateful it was. I got to practice my ASL skills from undergrad, meet some beautiful people, and enjoy the most wonderful pink drink. I recommend coming to this location for a refreshing drink, a kind smile, or a reminder of the beautiful complexities of opportunities for humans.

Yelp
Excellent Starbucks. Amazing staff. My order was made to perfection. Food was fresh. Dining room was a bit warm, but others seemed okay with the temp.

Sean G.

Yelp
So yes it's a Starbucks, but like no other. It's 4 or 5 blocks from Gallaudet University (1st US deaf collage) So it's focus is for people to interact with ASL. It's so cool. Food and service are top notch! i learned some new coffee and food signs i didn't know. Staff a friendly and all smiles. This will be the quietest starbucks you have ever visited! But so neat to see the reverse of what the Deaf community has to deal with. I took ASL in California and loved it but when going out with a few friends that are deaf if the person didn't know sign they had to type or write everything down. Here it's the same but you sign or they hand you a cool pad that you write on for your order. They then check with you and even ask things like this drink hot or cold in Asl. Worth a visit just to come and support something that we need more of in the US people just embracing others culture and ways. Place is clean, nice and well taken care of. It is also busy so know that you might not get a table or have to wait. welcome to the real world and going to an absolutely amazing store!

Yelp
My new favorite Starbucks in the world. Great service with a smile. Staff was entirely hearing impaired and left me inspired.

Yelp
Thank you form came too Often something like better Starbucks Absolutely fabulous dcolouse

Samantha G.

Yelp
This is my go-to Starbucks location. They always get my order exactly right. My orders are always consistent. And they always have everything I want in stock and available. And that's pretty amazing for a Starbucks location.

Kyla G.

Yelp
Order supposed to be ready at 9:35a and wasn't ready till 9:51a it was a simple order oatmeal and chai tea latte. The fact my oatmeal sat for 10 mins and they tried to give it to me. Took forever for the latte i asked them to remake the oatmeal because with sat too long. It's a constant issue here they take forever and the service is not great. They be too busy talking to eachother which requires their hands when they need to be making orders. Plus it's messy in there. Just overall I'm so happy i never have to go to this Starbucks ever again.

Bobbi D.

Yelp
My favorite Starbucks! I've learned more and gotten to practice my sign language! I love that this is always a nice quiet and chill place to hang out on H St. They have great service, and it's easy to order through the app or by writing down your order on the boards they provide.

Mary E.

Yelp
5/19/22 This Starbucks is different from the rest because it's a signing Starbucks focused on ASL and deaf culture. I started learning ASL several years ago and do volunteer work that require me to communicate with ASL so I definitely had to visit this location. The front of the store and signage is so cool. When I entered on a Thursday morning there was already a line. Most of the customers were hearing, so if you can't sign your order, they have ipad type devices to write your order down or you can show your app or picture to order. I've read previous reviews where it said the wait to get your drinks is fairly long. And it was. But since I was in no rush I grabbed a table. This is one area that can be improved on, wiping down the tables. Also this location seems to have homeless individuals frequently coming in. There were 2 individuals that entered and were bothering the customers and workers. They also have tables with umbrellas outside which is convenient. They didn't have much merchandise but I was able to pick up some tumblers that are unique to this store. Customer service was friendly.

LeAnn F.

Yelp
The staff was really quick and you have a pad to write down if you don't know ASL. They have the daily sign language that you can ask for them to teach you. This place is really great place to study or do work as it's quiet. I recommend coming here!

Isaac R.

Yelp
What can I say about Starbucks, there's nothing more to that is just a chain coffee. But this is the first Starbucks that I've been to that has only sign language on everything. If you don't know sign language, they have pads for you to write on. It was an awesome experience. Parking is tough to find around here.

Sinibaldo R.

Yelp
What a cool Starbucks! It focuses on deaf culture and American Sign Language. To my knowledge this is the only one in the world. The front of the store spells Starbucks in ASL. Notably, most of the customers are hearing and don't sign. However, the staff and many people at the coffee shop were deaf. It took a while to receive my coffee. I spent the time reading all the boards about deaf culture and admiring the art at the cafe. They sell tumblers and mugs unique to this store. Everything was clean and pristine. Definitely worth a try!

Tiffany W.

Yelp
So I don't conflate the two I recognize that this location is "the deaf location" the Customer service is great but the time and efficiency is horrible. I don't understand why I sit here for almost 15 minutes to receive a drink and there is always at least 5 people working. I hope the manager reads this and works on time and efficiency at this location.

Jordan N.

Yelp
For anyone in the world who is deaf, this place is definitely a convenient time-saver and a blessing. The baristas are also friendly too and are happy to communicate in ASL. It's a Signing Starbucks for a reason.

Ruthanne R.

Yelp
THIS IS SO COOL. The staff is hard of hearing, and all you sign language. If you don't speak sign language, like me, you write down your order. Everyone is really nice, it's absolutely quiet without blaring music, and it's seriously felt like stepping into a little spot of bliss in the middle of a busy street. Yet another place I would frequent often if I lived here. Alas, I must limit myself to the single visit and remember it with a smile.

Eric N.

Yelp
Really enjoy ordering through the app at this place because you can walk in, pick-up quickly and be on your way in no time. I feel a little guilty that I enjoy this large chain coffee place so much, but what can I say? They know their business. One thing that sets this location apart from other Starbucks is that the staff is hearing impaired, so they all speak sign language. No worries though if you don't speak sign language, you can write down your order. Today I ordered the nitro cold brew with sweet cream. Delicious!

Monique' M.

Yelp
Let me be clear, I am NOT a fan or supporter of Starbucks, but I am a Deaf/hard of hearing community ally, so I wanted to support this location. I received awesome customer service and a decent Iced Guava White tea. Everyone who has a chance, should visit this location!

Ashley G.

Yelp
This is a really cool Starbucks because it's a signing store. They only hire deaf folks, and you write down your order using a stylus.

kianga b.

Yelp
Ordered from this location through Uber eats. Placed an order of 6 items. 2 pastry's and 4 drinks (2 toasted grande white mochas, venti brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso, and a Trenta pink drink.) When I received my order I only received 2 drinks and 2 pastries. (Pink drink and shaken espresso). I tried contacting the store to resolve this order I didn't get an answer. My order did not include my order tickets nor did it have the drink ticks on them meaning the proper process of preparing my drinks did not happen. Out of what I did receive some things were wrong. My pink drink did not have the paid add ons I ordered. Not sure who was on staff today but I did not receive the care I knew this location to have. Very disappointed.

Nora M.

Yelp
This is a really unique location! The staff is deaf and it is very easy to communicate if you are not familiar with ASL. They have pads for you to write your order and it was really quick stop going back to work from my lunch hour.

Vivian D.

Yelp
2019 is just getting started but one of the coolest experience so far this year for me was visiting this unique Starbucks, deemed as the first "signing store" in the US. On the outside, you will see Starbucks written in sign above the store's name. You'll be greeted by a beautiful mural on your right upon walking in that highlights the beauty of ASL and the significance of the deaf community. There's no music in the store but the ambience is still present as you see people sipping on their coffee and signing all around you. If you are not familiar with ASL, there is a board of the ASL alphabets to guide those who would like to try to sign for their drink, otherwise you can write your order on their tablet. The staff is deaf, but kind and friendly. There is a screen up front that tells you when your oder is ready. I ordered a chai tea latte (by signing!) and it was delicious. Overall, I am beyond elated that this store exists to provide inclusion and support for the deaf and hard of hearing community.

Lydia R.

Yelp
Such a cool Starbucks - it is completely deaf-friendly and is the United States' first signing store! The baristas all use sign language and/or tablets for you to write down your order. At first I had no idea what to expect as I did not realize this was a signing store, but the employees were all so sweet and friendly! They understood my order perfectly and took the time to make sure they got everything right. My iced tea turned out amazing! I'll definitely return here when I'm in the area!

Heather R.

Yelp
It may seem odd, but for someone that does all my work online it was refreshing to communicate with Deaf people in person. Plus the service at this Starbucks was better then most Starbucks...sorry hearing people. Plus now I can say I have been to the Deaf Starbucks

Heather F.

Yelp
What a wonderful place! Baristas were all so kind and welcoming to my hearing daughter who uses ASL as her second language.

Leelé G.

Yelp
I'm giving this 5 stars because duh, it's deaf friendly especially in one of the most iconic coffee-chain there is - so I'm impressed how successful the spot went but at the same time, I wish the hype that people had for this place was similar to the deaf local businesses that I'm sure are around in this states and others as well. I decided to get the calm tea and cheese danish. I love the calm tea, very soothing to my throat and the cheese danish was okay, maybe it would be better if it was more on the toasty side? I don't know, I'll definitely need to go back again and try them on more warm temperature. Friendly staff - such an easy service with our language to use to communicate. A really good experience overall, I'm glad to see more places coming together within the deaf and hearing community (: one business at a time.

Yelp
When the Washington, DC Signing Stire first opened, I thought "Kudos to Starbucks!l I'm sad to say it's taken me so long to frequent. The storefront is welcoming, bright and warm - which matches the energy of the place ! My husband ordered his regular Flat White in a mug, I ordered the Pumpkin Spice Latte (sans whipped cream). BOTH were excellent. I'll make sure to come in again when I'm in the area AND when visitors are in town!!! Nicely done Starbucks!!!

Noah D.

Yelp
I absolutely love it here, in addition to it having employees who specialize for those who are impaired, they also get them done I find in a timely fashion quicker than other Starbucks. My absolute go to every single time for coffee in DC.

p r.

Yelp
Excellent service with professional staff in the only signing store in Dc. Very peaceful and quiet ambience.

Lillian C.

Yelp
Absolutely not. The only reason why I go here is because it's a 5 mins walk from my house. I've been waiting almost 20 mins for a Grande Frapp. Usually my drinks from here are good but Hell will freeze over by the time you receive it...

Michael L.

Yelp
Went to grab a black venti and they were out, so they went out of their way to make me a blonde pour over. I really appreciated how hard they worked to make sure I was happy with my order. My favorite Starbucks in DC.

Tyrone J.

Yelp
Most Starbucks mess up your order or are rude. These were the sweetest people working tonight. It's great to see that everyone has a chance to work despite their hearing impairment. Honestly the best star bucks I've very had and they hooked me up on the caramel!

Justin W.

Yelp
This Starbucks has employees who are deaf and can use sign language. I communicated with my barista by using a combination of an electronic note pad on the counter on which I wrote my order, some pointing, and she did some lip reading. This is really awesome that Starbucks is creating a space for the deaf and hearing impaired community.

Crystal G.

Yelp
The first signing store! We ventured on scooters in the cold to come from Foggy Bottom just to see the first signing store and order in ASL. The cashier set up is great where you can write or sign, we wrote that while we are not deaf or ASL proficient we wanted to sign our orders, which we successfully did. The order board at the pickup counter is large and displays perfectly when your drink is ready. Just bummed we missed out on the store specific mugs. Maybe next time.

Eric S.

Yelp
This is possibly the worst Starbucks I've ever been to, not only can they not fulfill orders under 20 minutes, but the staff is flat out rude with the worst attitude without words I've ever witnessed in my life LOL

Tobey R.

Yelp
After reading yelp reviews we decided to give ourselves extra time when visiting. It was unnecessary. Service was fast and all the staff were incredible friendly and a great experience! Great way to start our day in DC! Thank you!!!

Benjamin P.

Yelp
The Starbucks on H St NE employs Deaf folks only. On the first day like today, as a result, hundreds of Deaf people must have gone there, and I have seen a few friends. It's a place that actually ends my days long depression. It's hard to realize that one needs a safe, public place where native language, like sign language, is spoken primarily and commonly, until you enter the place for the first time. It's a magical place. PS: this review does not cover the quality of coffee, meals or consumables. It only reflects on prospects of an environment such as one above.

Rebecca G.

Yelp
Even though this location is further from my office, I always try to get my coworkers morning coffee at this location vs. the one at union station because the employees are always very friendly, efficient, and accommodating. I love their ordering system, too.

Pinky J.

Yelp
This is a Deaf staff Starbucks! I love the atmosphere and service. They created a cool way to order food and i enjoy coming to this location.

Peter Q.

Yelp
Glad for the students there's an ASL only store so close to Gallaudet. Get to practice some basic signing. Everyone there is very helpful and patient. Thanks

Caitlyn S.

Yelp
very neat and accessible! hard to find parking. the drink I ordered is fabulous! I enjoyed how workers are communicative.

John H.

Yelp
I live at 3rd and H so this has been my neighborhood sbux since it opened. I typically visit 2-4 times per week, however that will now change. I understand that sbux has a pet policy and many stores allow patrons to bring their animals as did this store, until today. After writing out my entire order on a digital pad, I was signaled that I could no longer carry my 6lb Yorkshire terrier under my arm while I waited for my coffee, my dog would have to wait outside. No thanks, coffees not that great and other Starbucks don't apply rules from day to day when they see fit. Cheers

Doricarla Z.

Yelp
I truly believe this Starbucks needs to be added as one of the things you must visit in Washington! We came here by accident, as were strolling down the streets. Since it was getting colder, we decided to treat ourselves to a cup of coffee. We almost didn't went in because we wanted to visit the other Starbucks closer to the Washington monument because it looked so nice outside. So glad, once again, we came here. Upon arrival we saw the sign, that is posted here. This Starbucks is a signing store. They provide boards that you can write your order in. It was so nice to be able to use some sign language that we knew. Both my boys enjoyed the experience. Is things like this that makes you come out of your bubble, out of your comfort zone, so that you become aware of how others live. I want to come here again... if you are in the area... please don't hesitate to visit this special place, without words but filled with love. As you step into the store, you will be surrounded by love from the wonderful people that work here, the most friendly people.

Beth G.

Yelp
This is easily my favorite Starbucks! It's a unique Starbucks in that all the employees only communicate through American Sign Language (and let you write stuff down on their writing pad if you don't know ASL), which is a great way for me to practice finger-spelling my name and signing other words. Service is extremely quick too, I've never had to wait in line. The employees are also quite friendly. I wish parking was more accessible so that so many people wouldn't have to illegally park/partially block H street to pick up their mobile orders, but I think that's more of an H Street issue than a Starbucks problem. I would go out of my way to go to this Starbucks because they never get my order wrong, work fast, and are accessible to those who both use and don't use ASL. 5/5

Samantha S.

Yelp
I may be deaf and it was super nice to take my order in my language, ASL cause everyday in the hearing world, i have to type or write down my order which is the norm. Im happy to see this happen and giving those deaf people an opportunity, with tables turned in the hearing world.

Andrew R.

Yelp
DO NOT GO TO THIS STARBUCKS !!! The service is brutal, inside is extremely hot so when you are waiting 40 minutes for a simple cup of coffee you will start to get irritated. Every time I go to this Starbucks I end up waiting 30 minutes for an incorrect order. After the initial 30 minutes on waiting for the incorrect order, I have to wait an additional 30 minutes for the correct order. I tried to be nice and not write a review like this, but I have had enough. Brutal service. Avoid at all costs.

Anissa C.

Yelp
Not quite sure why people don't like about this Starbucks, but all of my experiences have been pleasant. Fast service, clean establishment + super friendly and competent staff! Special shout out to Xavier. He's always in a good mood, and even remembers my order...granted, I do come everyday, but so what. He doesn't *have* to remember individual orders, but he makes a point to. I appreciate that. He's always looking out! This is my favorite Starbucks in DC.

Isaiah N.

Yelp
Reliably bad customer service. They are typically out of items, including iced coffee and food items. Bathrooms are dirty nearly all the time, and folks that work here don't seem to care their business is poorly run. Too many good options close by to come here.

Jacob L.

Yelp
They were out of cold brew, then they gave me a caramel frappe with light whipped cream when I asked for just a lite base. Then they gave my wife a cinnamon latte when she asked for coconut milk. This Starbucks is worse than Arby's.
