10 Best Wineries to Visit in California’s Gold Country - Eater SF

"Although reservations are required for every aspect of a visit to Starfield Vineyards, it is worth the extra planning when the weather outdoors is lovely. There’s weekend lunch on the patio, but also a picnic menu available to take elsewhere on the grounds — for example, to the amphitheater or along the nature trails. There are some fees for certain amenities if you’re not a member, but it’s typically waived with a wine purchase." - Dianne de Guzman

An absolute must-visit! Gorgeous views, decadent wines (don't miss Spirit of the Gods if you enjoy dessert wine) and a very friendly dog-loving team.

Visited on 11/21/2023. This winery is truly a gem and one of the most beautiful wineries I have been to. The owners plan for this is stellar. I was there in the day time so unfortunately did not get to experience the night views which would have lightening everywhere. The trails are unique and gorgeous at this time of year with the color changing of leaves. Everywhere you look there is a gorgeous view 365 degrees around. It feels so calm and refreshing. Although the winery itself I would give 5/5, I am giving a 3/5 stars due to the lack of hospitality and feeling they cater more towards wine club members than those of us who are not. I’m also comparing this to other wineries in the area. I arrived at the winery around 1:30 PM. No tasting availability although they did not seem too busy to do a tasting. We were asked to sit anywhere we would like outside, no restrictions given, so we sat on the sofa patio furniture. Host stated he would come bring us water. It was 19-20 minutes after did we receive water. He did say he was sorry but got busy with others. There were two individuals working. 1 group outside, 1 tasting being done inside, our group, and maybe 1-2 other couples and group of 3- I’d say this is a manageable. We must have been sitting outside for ~ 30-35 minutes when the host comes to us for the second time (first time to give us water) to let us know we had to move seats because our seats were for wine club members only, so had to move to the patio table and chairs. Again, host stated he was sorry he didn’t tell us earlier- which tells me he was aware since 1) we were there for ~ 20 minutes and then he brought water and 2) did not tell us to move at the time water was brought. Moving was not an issue but rather the lack of care or hospitality felt- again catered towards wine club members. This was a Tuesday afternoon and not busy. Again, this place is gorgeous. Photos do not do it justice! Truly a place to visit because it is a unique winery and a favorite of mine in terms of what it offers, but if you are looking for a welcoming feeling as most wineries in Placerville provide, do not expect that. Just enjoy the views and you will not be disappointed!

Google
This is the cutest little winery with the most delicious food! I HIGHLY recommend adding this to your Apple Hill stop. The winery property is absolutely gorgeous with plenty of photo opp worthy views. They have a great lunch menu and lunch is served on their seated lawn area that is nestled under some trees that provide decent shade during warmer weather days. The staff are super friendly and really seem like they enjoy working here. This winery is also very dog friendly! I’ve been here a few times and have always enjoyed myself and leave wanting to come back again.

Google
What a beautiful place! The wine wasn't my favorite, but for a $10 tasting I'm not complaining. I did really enjoy the Barbero and the Spirit of the Gods dessert wine. We also ordered the charcuterie plate which was pretty good. But honestly you need to go walk around the property, that's where Starfield shines. Ellie was super knowledgeable and fun 😁

Google
While everything is gorgeous and top quality I’m highly disappointed in the ability to serve and welcome the community into their tasting room. As posted outside, they list all the services they provide, but guarantee none will be provided. We were kindly greeted by a tasting room staff member, and a room completely void of life. We asked to do a tasting but were denied because we didn’t have a reservation because they were “completely booked.” We chose to take our chances with a bottle of wine and try to enjoy the surroundings.

Google
Beautiful new winery that has stunning landscaped grounds. The tasting room is brand new, and has extensive outside seating - it is stylishly done but understated compared to the other design aspects of the winery. The pavilion on the lake, the amphitheater and walking trail through the pines are all impressive. The wines is good with the red blend Miners Inch an easy drinking option and the rose is pretty exceptional, especially on a warm California day. Lunch options are now available and the food was really fantastic, utilizing fresh produce ingredients from 24 Carrot farm shop just across the road. Dog friendly. Happy that we are members!

Google
Excellent views from their serving area that looks out over the hillsides. Steven was very informative and the cheese pairing were a nice touch. Five wines with decent servings in the tasting. Had lunch under the tree . Three of us had the French dip, very tasty. I got the peach mochi donuts. Voted best dessert at the table.

Never been to the winery, but I had the pleasure of trying this delightful white wine because my friend Maggie loves it and she was entertaining me at her house. Pleasantly light and refreshing, this white wine paired perfectly woth a good evening with friends and mild heat.

Yelp
We made a last minute reservation at Starfield on a lovely Saturday afternoon and had a great time. We were greeted right when we entered and were seated at a table on the grass. Our host was very knowledgeable and gave great tips for food pairings as we tasted. There was also food menu which we didn't order from, but likely will next time. There were several wines on the menu and they were having a sale, so our guy poured us a couple of extra tastes to see if there was anything we liked for purchase. He wasn't pushy and we were happy taste a few more. Starfield is a beautiful property. We enjoyed the wine and the service so much that we ended up joining the wine club and took home several bottles of wine. I'm looking forward to our next visit so we can walk some trails and have a tasting by the lake on their property.

Yelp
Pro: Nice wine, food is very good. Con: They are very strict and inflexible on their 6 person policy. We had a group of 6. Separately 2 friends had booked and they had put them in a different area. It was 100F+ that day so there was hardly anyone there. We politely asked if the 2 friends could join. They said no because it would overwhelm the server. I asked if once our friends had ordered and been served they could bring their food and drinks over to sit with us (so as not to cause the server more work). Again no. Not sure I would go back. Plenty of other places to go to with good food, wine and better hospitality.

Yelp
Another new location we visited for the first time, during our last trip to Apple Hill. My girlfriend wanted to visit Starfield Vineyards & Winery on this trip, as she'd come to recently hear about it. After arriving we briefly looked around the inside area at the different wines, and then were taken to the patio area for wine tastings. Once in the back I noticed how nice the outside area was, especially at that time of year. It wasn't cold just yet, so in the late afternoon it was still enjoyable out while in a short sleeve. There were several people dinning, which we were told is preferable to do so by reservation; but not mandatory. It was explained it was better by reservation just in case you did a drop in and the were fully booked. I think I noticed some people say you could only buy reservation, so there might've been some confusion on their part. While at the wine area my girlfriend tried several samples of Starfields different wine selections. And ultimately chose two different whites to take home that day. During the tastings we were given Starfield membership brochure, to more the discounts one can get from being a member. If you're into wine it's definitely something to check out if interested. Overall: Friendly staff, great service, great wines, and beautiful outdoor area.

Yelp
Very cute ambiance, nice setting. My party and I went for their lunch. It's was so nice because the weather was nice and they have such a nice lookout. Their service was fast and efficient. While at lunch, you can not do any wine tastings. So be prepared to make another reservation if your interested in doing that. Their food was ok in our opinion. We felt like their mushroom appetizer was a one biter. Their Katsu was good, but also on the smaller side. All in all, this place was good. Nice when it's a nice day out.

Yelp
This is such a beautiful and private winery with beautiful views of their private lake. Great for date night or for relaxing. We did the star-field stunner wine tastings and paired that with the warm & creamy spinach dip. The service was absolutely amazing, they gave us the history and the tasting notes for each wine and what it will pair well with. We ended up getting the syrahs and this sweet wine called "Spirit of the Gods".

Yelp
This was our second time at Starfields Vineyard and it absolutely did not disappoint. This is also our second time going to apple hill and I feel like we can't go there without going wine tasting. I had forgotten to make reservations earlier in the week online so I called them right when they opened day of to see if they had any availability. The man on the line was polite and stated they had a few so we got in around 3:20. They have plenty of parking and the grounds are simply stunning. We got there a bit early so they told us we could wait outside and grab a tasting of sparkling wine and later proceeded to sit and wait for our reservation. Once we were sat, our server provided us with 3 tasting options and most of us chose the favorite and 1 person chose the light. We also ordered 2 charcuterie plates, 1 meat and 1 cheese because the meat brought only 1 cheese. Needless to say, they were amazing. Quality cheese, Jams, meats, crackers, etc. Our server was amazing. Unfortunately we don't remember her name, maybe Lauren?... anyways, she was super thorough, giving us background and recs for apple hill. Overall we enjoyed our time there, after our tasting, we walked around the premise down toward the amphitheater and lake and everything was stunning. 10/10

Yelp
Absolute must visit!!! The view is out of this world, the food phenomenal and the wines are delicious. Kat, Anna and the whole crew are amazing. The whole staff is so knowledgeable, personable, and fun and they are never pushy. They truly just want you to have the best experience and find wines you enjoy. For the food, the tuna tartar is my favorite on the tasting menu and the cheese plate at the lake pavilion is delicious! Everything is so expertly paired and put together, from the presentation to the taste. The property is absolutely gorgeous regardless of where you sit or if you're walking the trails. The atmosphere they maintain there blends well with the view. They do such a good job of keeping it lowkey but classy. I really have appreciated how they can seem so busy but still make you feel like you're the only ones there. It never feels crowded and they don't rush you, you can truly enjoy your time. I have never had anything less than a stellar experience at Starfield. I love the ambiance, the views, and most importantly the wines! If you want a perfect, low-key but absolutely delicious afternoon, Starfield is the place to go!

Yelp
The staff is extremely friendly. The new "self serve food" is a great idea. The food menu is the same price as full service. However, no one is busing any tables. You will need to clear your own table before you can sit down. So the tables won't be clean. Bathroom was also dirty and not stalked with toilet paper and soap.

Yelp
The setting is one of the nicest in the area. It was a beautiful spring day and it was perfect for sitting outside. One of the nice things about their outdoor seating is that you can sit in the sun or shade. The service was informative and enthusiastic about their wines. They have four different tasting choices so my wife and I chose two different ones to see the variety of wines they offered. Right off the bat, their Chardonnay blew us away. The Santa Cruz Mountain Chardonnay is as good as it gets. While the rest of the offerings were good, this was outstanding. Another bonus here is their discounting if you but four bottles. 25% off is a definite incentive to go for it, which we did. I'd highly recommend stopping by if you're in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Love the beautiful views and lakeside pavilion. Wines are decent. Food is great. Alexa is a gem. But like other people have said, the reservation system and bizarre rules for different experiences is perplexing and ultimately led me to not renew my membership. To make a reservation you fill out a form online and then they email or call you back. It feels archaic and I wish they could just let you book directly online. Also, they don't answer the phone if you call them. They have many different "experiences" with bizarre rules. If you do a tasting you can't order food off the lunch menu. If you sit for lunch you can't do a tasting. No parties over 6 people even if you sit separately. I really don't understand. I shared this feedback with management because I want to like the place and was told there's a lot more that goes into these experiences that I wouldn't understand. I know when I go to tons of other wineries, it's not so complicated with bizarre rules. Why is it that so many other wineries can be hospitable and welcome guests with ease, but Starfield has to be difficult? Sigh, I really wish it was easier to just eat lunch and taste some wines here, but alas...

Yelp
We went for my birthday and it was a great experience. They even offered blankets as it was a bit chilly outside- wonderful hospitality

Yelp
Hidden Gem I'm not sure many people know about this venue...it's an awesome little secret...cheese cheese and more cheese .. It's my 3rd time here and it never fails with the ambience ...the food was amazing my girlfriend and I shared a pork belly ban mi sandwich and a very large Waldorf chicken salad! Sharing is caring (just saying) we also did a tasting prior to lunch on the out door grassy patio ...weather was perfection! Our wines were excellent! We also had a sample of the new vermouth so delicious! With a splash of tonic and a twist of orange peel I wanted a cocktail of it, So refreshing and pleasing to my taste buds. All and all when your all done wine tasting and with lunch...you can take a walk down to the pond trail loop where they have a fountain and beautiful lily pads. Members can enjoy lunch and tasting on lake deck that is exquisite. This winery measures up to a fancy venue right out of a Napa magazine. Look out Sonoma placerville coming up. The reason a 5 star was not given well two reasons but, I won't say one of them on this platform. However, the service was a bit slow but, I'm sure it's staffing issues ...they remained friendly and did the best they could with the resources they are given. I will definitely recommend to all my friends.

Yelp
We are Starfield members and visit as often as we can. We love the beautiful views, nature walks, and of course the wine and food! Staff is always so friendly and we feel like family whenever we visit. Wine tasting on the lake is such a serene atmosphere, especially when it was raining!

Yelp
Starfield is a nice winery with a nice location & views, but so are dozens of other wineries in this area. I planned a nice day for a friends birthday and was out over $80 before we even arrived b/c of their policy of requiring reservations and non-refundable fees for literally everything. I was hoping maybe this winery was outstanding & worth all the hassle, but it's not. Wines are average (and pricey) and grounds were cool, but not worth the $10 to walk on the nature trails (Really?!) And I believe many "offerings" are for members only. They're trying to make this place exclusive, not inclusive. The rules, fees and regulations were a real turn off for us and there's no reason to return. We know of several other wineries that we can simply walk into, taste nice wines, bring our own food if we want, and feel welcome - no reservations required...

Yelp
Starfield's patio/outdoor area is absolutely gorgeous! It is a great winery to stop in at for a tasting/lunch break. Reservations are highly encouraged, if not required. I felt that their menu pricing was a little high but to be expected at a winery. I loved the food! So good. Their wine sampling was nice as they offered a wide variety of wines. Their pourer did a great job of explaining each wine and its history. There were only one or two wines that I absolutely *loved* but I would still come back to enjoy the gorgeous outdoor view.

Yelp
What a treat it was to visit Starfield for the first time! I live in Sonoma County and this was my first time tasting in this part of El Dorado County. My sister is a member here and booked reservations for my birthday with my mom. From start to finish the experience was fabulous. We were greeted with a lovely Rose upon arrival then made our way down the hill on gorgeous walking paths surrounded by pine trees. The amphitheater looks fantastic- I'd love to come back in the evening for one of their summer concerts. Our reservations were on one of the lakes in a beautiful contemporary shaded building where were we seated facing the lake. James was our sommelier and really knew his stuff. The charcuterie plate we ordered was both beautiful and yummy. James made recommendations on what wines paired best with the cheeses. After our experience tasting, we walked up to the main tasting room where we had lunch reservations on the lawn under the pine trees. Although it was a warm day, the shade and nice breeze made it quite comfortable. Gin was our server and her service was quite friendly and efficient. The salads we had were about as fresh as they get and the zucchini fries were magnificent! For dessert we shared the chocolate trifle which was perfection. The one and only minor complaint was the winery was out of bubbles. I was looking forward to sipping some and likely purchasing a few bottles. I did however buy a few bottles of their Rose which was wonderful on a warm day. I look forward to returning here!

Yelp
I was a recent member of this winery. We joined because of one great experience with John and his knowledge of the wine. Funny enough the best wine they had used Napa grapes! Which they don't even source anymore Napa grapes. Thereafter all downhill. First off they want you to book reservations. But they don't answer their phones when you call! As club members we shouldn't have too. We should come in and be taken care of for our patronage. Second off they don't allow children on the patio area and give you hell if your child even steps foot in the area. But they allow dogs! Wtf! It's not family friendly. Thirdly, the energy beyond John experience with "workers" is not positive. The staff treat you like they are doing you a favor. My husband is a Napa native. The entire vibe and facility they are thinking beyond their britches. This is El Do county let's be real. Over it and we cancelled our membership. I do not recommend this winery! Save your time, money and effort!

Yelp
Great little diamond in the rough. Never heard of it before but was recommended. Had a blast! Great property with great areas to explore and settle into a wine tasting or a few bottles as we did. The wine and service were on par as was the location and venue!

Yelp
We had a wine club event at LavaCap today and afterwards wanted to find another local winery for a tasting and a bottle. We had never seen Starfield at any of the grocery stores or wine bars that we frequent so we decided to head over there. We got there and were told it was reservation only. This seemed odd because they were only about half full and there were a ton of tables open but they may very well have been booked with reservations. They told us they were full for tastings and despite not having a reservation, we asked if we could just buy a bottle and go down to the pond. They said that we could, which was cool and very accommodating given we didn't have a resy. We asked about lighter red wines, she poured her 2 recommendations based on what we were looking for in 2 singles glasses. My GF and I shared the 2 pours and we decided on the Grenache. We bought a bottle of Grenache and we're surprised by a $10 tasting fee - we had 2 singles tasting glasses that we shared, it was FAR from a tasting. We also didn't ask to taste them, we asked for recommendations for lighter reds and she poured 2 small tasters for us to try. Even if this is considered a tasting, most wineries wave the tasting fee when you buy a bottle. Starfield requires the purchase of 2 bottles to waive the tasting fee. This was annoying but wasn't a dealbreaker. We were most opposed to the $10 trail fee on top of the $10 tasting fee, on top of the $45 bottle of wine. You'd think that customers wanting to come and enjoy a bottle of wine at the winery would be appreciated but instead there's a fee for using the winery's grounds to drink the wine. The Grenache was decent, we both liked it. The winery was very nice, but we'll likely never be back. The excessive fees and entitled rules make us not want to come back. I wouldn't recommend this place to a friend as a result.

Yelp
Beautiful vineyard! Lots of walking paths, a few ponds to relax by, lots of plants and trees are labeled. They plan to do things like yoga by the pond, a fly fishing class, private dinners on the deck. I don't drink wine. So I'm here to review the food. The chef is fantastic! I hope he gets free reign to totally vamp up the menu. His dishes are so tasty and perfectly enhances all the fresh produce of the season. Smoke salmon and trout egg tart was delicious. Buttery tart and fresh seafood. Visually appealing too. The burrata salad was very fresh. Pistachio and pesto adds a nice texture. Spring salad was so nice and herbaceous! My smoked salmon salad with the naan and the fried soft boiled egg was so light but filling in a non heavy way. I also got a side salad with bacon and they use real bacon that's perfectly cooked and crispy! Tomato soup was ok. It's elevated tomato soup. The other dishes stole the show. Desserts were nice but I am more of a savory person. I will be on the lookout for future menu changes and will be bringing everyone I know who's visiting Placerville. We got a real gem in our town!

Yelp
As many of the reviews this place has great views and beautiful grounds. My just bought a weekend home in the are and were looking for a winery that matches the vibes that I am use to in Sonoma. This place checked all the boxes and the wine was good. My husband and I opt in on a membership on our first tasting! This were going well until we invited some of our friends to join us. We had a total of 7 people and we only wanted to have the wine but because of the size of our party we can only get a table if we order food. I was very confuse because we even booked it well in advanced. Any way a brushed it off and maybe this was just a one time coincidence. NOPE! it happened again. Also their booking system is a set back in time. Why does someone have to email to make a reservation, is this the 90s?! As much as the beautiful scenery I cancelled my membership.

Jennifer A.

Yelp
Bad! First band last visit. Visit lasted 5 minutes. Not in Napa people! Rude girl not able to pour a taste. Need to wait an hour although place was empty. Only 2 people working. Didn't taste, but upon fast departure was told wine was not good. Too expensive too. Many other places to enjoy! Don't bother!!!!
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
They made us sit outside in freezing temps when the whole tasting room was empty. Crazy way to treat members. Needless to say, I'm no longer a member, nor will I be coming back.

Yelp
Went to Starfield last Saturday with 5 friends for our lunch appointment at 12:15. It was sunny out but windy and chilly. We were seated at a table under a huge tree in the shade. We asked if we could move to another table in the Sun. The young lady that sat us went to ask the manager. He said no that's the only table available to us. She also mentioned , I see you used to be a wine club member with us. There was a good size open area near us in the sun. I asked if we could move our table into the sun. Was told no! Our waitress then brought us each 2 blankets. That was nice of her but very difficult to drink wine and eat appetizers while trying to keep blankets wrapped around you. 2 other tables of 4 came in and were sat in the shade also. They requested to move into the sun and the were accommodated. When the waitress came to take out lunch order. I said our plan was to have lunch but we have decided to go else where and be comfortable while eating. I requested our bill for our wine and two appetizers. Also the whole time we we're there no one sat at the other 3 larger tables in the sun. As we were leaving I was walking by the 2 tables of 4 that had requested to be moved into the sun. I said hello to them and said do you mind me asking if you are wine club members here. Both tables said yes. At one time I too was a wine club member there and never had this problem of changing my table. So I guess if your not a wine club member you get treated as a second class citizen. I would have totally understood them not moving us if they were packed and the other larger tables were being used. my friends and I won't be going back to Starfield!!

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience at the winery. We had my 15 yo son with us and he could not be in the tasting room areas, however we were able to purchase a glass of wine and walk around the property. We came across a beautiful pond. We all really enjoyed our time here including my son. We will be back.

Yelp
Great food and wine tasting service. Friendly and informed staff. Bought the reserve and loved it!

Yelp
Our first time here and it's a place that I don't mind going back. The staff are all friendly and very nice. I ordered banh mi and it was very good. My daughter ordered the pastrami sandwich we divided it so we both can taste the other one and the winner is the banh mi, pastrami was ok it was a bit salty for me. The mochi donut was interesting idk what they called it mochi because it was far mochi for me lol. The place is very relaxing, clean, and the view was fabulous. The lake are was also beautiful, you must have reservation to have lunch at the patio. I highly recommend this place.

Dan G.

Yelp
Came here with my gf and had a few taster flights and ordered a bunch of food. Once we took out our professional camera we were told we could not take photos with our camera. They wouldn't explain why and just said it was their policy. Staff is not diverse at all as well as the customers there. honestly came here because of the view but just didnt feel like we were welcome there from the start. One of the older mangers or owner rushed our ordering while he spend alot more time chit chatting with another table. Dont know how to explain it but the feeling we felt is not a great one and im sure others have experienced something similar either here or other not so welcome establishments. Please dont support this establishment.

Yelp
How lucky we are to have this GEM where we live! Anna & Steven are amazing! Love the wine, service, knowledge of staff and especially THE FOOD! Did we mention the winery & trails?!

Yelp
This winery has it all! Gorgeous venue with plenty of opportunities to see and enjoy the great outdoors, spectacular wines, delicious food prepared by a Michelin chef, and positive and helpful staff members. Holly was our server today and she was terrific. Two thumbs enthusiastically up for this gem!!

Brianna S.

Yelp
AMAZING WINERY!! If you have a doubt at all, disregard. It's one of the best places for wine especially if you like sweeter wines. Staff was excellent. I believe we had the manager (a guy with tattoos) and he had the best recommendations. Shoutout to him!! Charcuterie boards were 9/10!! Wine was a solid 11/10! Something that truly stood out is they didn't bother us when we stayed past closing time so that just added more value! Best place in Placerville!

Yelp
Starfield was a wonderful! I came with a group of six and ordered the spinach artichoke dip, which was delicious. I really enjoyed the wine tasting as well since it was only $10 for 5 glasses or good quality wine. We were also given champagne before the tasting as we had to wait a little bit before being seated. I recommend checking out the waterfront area (you can ask the staff about it). Would definitely recommend and would go again!

Yelp
This place is fantastic! They're open by reservation and tasting reservations are different than lunch, but when you book a tasting you can order appetizers. We had Anna as our person for the tasting and they are absolutely fantastic, the description of the wines were superb and spot on. Starfield is also very scenic so I suggest taking your time here and walking the grounds after your lunch/tasting.

Yelp
It is a fantastic Placerville winery. Excellent wines and food. The ambiance is wonderful and the views are just magical. It is huge with a beautiful lake and yet everything is perfectly done. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Had such an amazing time at the July 23 event. The food was incredible, the staff was amazing but the view took our breath away. Would recommend the dinner events to anyone looking to escape the daily grind and be transported to a land of relaxation. Jennifer, Kat, and James treated us like family.

Yelp
We have never been here before and came to meet family . I will say the grounds are absolutely beautiful, if it were not for the staff, we would be back, unfortunately we will probably not. Our family was already sitting in a table and their server had approved the table next to them as we were to arrive. As we got there, the manager told us there was no available seating and we would need to head to the amphitheater to enjoy our wine we had just purchased. We met our family back at the table , where very few tables were occupied as the same women came up to us and told us we needed to leave because there was reservations coming in. So instead of ordering food and more wine we moved to the amphitheater with our family. We left and hour later and the two tables plus others were still unoccupied. I have never felt so unwelcome and pushed out of a place of business. Not to mention, the food we ordered while at the table was given to go, with no silverware or napkins.

Yelp
We are frequent wine tasters and have been here about a year prior. We remember the wines being just okay but wanted to give it another shot! We called for a reservation but couldn't get through. When we arrived, we waited to be helped and had to speak to a manager because we didn't have a reservation. The tone we received was if they were "too good" to help us. The only option was if we wanted to sit to have lunch and get a bottle or glass of wine. We might have done that had we been able to taste the wines again but worst service I've ever had. Won't be going back!

Yelp
We had originally heard about Starfield a few months ago. As of this writing, they are not yet open to the public but you can visit by calling them to do a tasting in what is an amazing and I mean amazing spot just a few minutes from Hwy 50 in Placerville. They are working feverously to finish up the tasting room with an estimated opening of "Julyish." They are currently doing tastings in the pavillion which is perched above a pond that overlooks the foothills. This really is a breathtaking venue. There are trails all over the property with different things to see at every turn. They have been planting hundreds of trees and shrubs that supliment what is already a beautiful environment. We had the pleasure of meeting up with Jennifer, the Director of everything and Kat, her fearless protege. They are both from an Amador winery that changed ownership earlier this year. They're both terrific to visit with and know the industry and their products VERY well. Let's talk wine. There are very few wineries that we have been to that we can say that everything we tasted was spot on. This is one of those now. A few total standouts for us were the Blanc de Blancs (bubbles), the Savignon Blanc, the Tempranillo and that Barbera which is one of the best Barberas known to mankind! Pets are allowed. We joined the wineclub which is well priced given the quality of wines they are producing. Great place and we can't wait to revisit. Especially once the tasting room is finished.

Yelp
Was just driving around and founds this place. We do a lot of wine tasting, this looked interesting. Tasty room displays the info on the winery and the chef. As a retired chef I want great taste and good value. Top notch on both. Decided on having lunch looked at the menu and saw the chefs tasting menu. 4 course, 4 wines $60.00 priced right and a good value. The appetizer came and I had a pause, very small but great presentation, smoked salmon, very tasty, salad regular size, a sigh of relief, also very good, main course, lamb on toast, excellent. Dessert puff pastry with rhubarb and strawberry also excellent. All the wines were very good and went well with each course. Took a tour of the grounds also very well done they spent millions very pretty.

Yelp
We loved our time at Starfield! The wine tasting and lunch were the perfect way to spend our day in Placerville. The Tuna Tartare was absolutely delicious! This is the best winery to visit if you want wine, food, and nature.

Yelp
Went here on a weekday and they were able to accommodate a table for two of us on a walk-in basis. But would definitely try to lock in a reservation when you can. Views are beautiful, and the tasting room and servers are so welcoming! Several options for wine flights and I love that they have options for white wines/sweets, as well as mixes

Yelp
Starfield is a fabulous venue. The staff is very accommodating and offer wonderful suggestions. Yes, there are rules, all very reasonable, that is to keep the property in top shape, enjoyable and safe for members. I would say this is not the place to let small children roam freely. If there are children that need more space my suggestion would be to reserve a picnic spot in the amphitheater area. This way families with young children can relax while other members enjoy a more adult setting on the Terrace. We also have grandchildren and take them along to many places with us. However, there are some venues we know would be very difficult for them to sit still for any length of time. To take our 3 year old darling grandson to Starfield would be a huge mistake as well as inconsiderate to other members that are there for a relaxed experience. Here are a few pics of a picnic we hosted for friends at the amphitheater on a Wednesday. Everyone is still raving about Starfield!

Yelp
This place was not at all accommodating, the service was extremely slow and unapologetic, and I will not be returning. They totally make you feel like your business is not important to them. Maybe wine club members are different or something but not us 'nobodys'. Among other rigid, inflexible policies they would not make any exceptions for, they would only give us ice in an ice bucket and would not serve it in an actual glass (apparently providing customers with ice for their water or other drinks is against their policy??), food came out excruciatingly slow, they refused to work with us on a more comfortable table even tho the whole place was empty and I saw others get moved upon request, and we had a reservation well in advance. A few other little annoyances happened but those were the highlites. Lots of other far more beautiful places with nicer staff in the area that want your business more than these folks seem to care about. I wanted to speak to a manager but by the end of the 2 hours I was just ready to be done with it and get out of there.
