Ann Arbor’s Best Restaurants | Eater Detroit

"Tucked in a strip mall, this family-owned Middle Eastern restaurant is always busy with regulars at lunch or early dinner (they close at 7 p.m.). There are tables for eating in but for many, it’s grab-and-go. In fact, it’s the kind of place that you’ll find an excuse to drive by so you can pick up a warm, foil-wrapped pita sandwich stuffed with falafel, tabbouleh, tahini, and pickles, or one with chicken shawarma and garlic sauce (both can be ordered “spicy” with chile sauce, too). Other winners include a well-made hummus and a soothing crushed lentil soup." - Mary Hayes Weier

This was the second time I had Star’s Cafe cater & it was just perfect. The humus & garlic sauce are out of this world. The beef and chicken shawarma are full flavor and cooked to perfection. The grape leaves are seasoned and delicious. The fattoush salad has an amazing dressing & crispy fresh pita chips. Wonderful owner & friendly staff! Highly recommend for catering or regular dining!

Google
This is a family owned, authentic Middle Eastern Restaurant. The food is amazing, pricing is more than fair, and the people are nice. The kabobs and fatoush are great. Hands down my favorite would be the chicken shawerma wrap combo, pictured below. I stop and grab it even if I'm not hungry. It's that good! I also highly recommend the Baklava.

We came in right at close and the staff was super friendly. The food was excellent and pleased all three generations of our family. We will be back for sure!!

Google
This is definitely a great place to get some good midden eastern food. The staff is always friendly, usualy to the point of small conversation. Which I can appreciate. But the shish kafta sandwich is always a winner. The atmosphere is inviting, and the smell always delicious.

Google
Absolutely delicious! The falafel sandwich combo meal is a great deal - amazing sandwich, flavorful hummus and fresh tabbouleh for like $11

October 2023 Always love the food here ... they have the best lentil soup, which hits the spot on a cold rainy day, while studying at the library 🍵🌧📚! Hints of cumin with black pepper in the rich broth mixed of pureed rice and lentils. Great service from this family owned restaurant! Small diner feel but don't let the looks deter you from going in. The food is amazing! 😋 Favorites are the chicken tawook sandwich combo, gyro plate, falafel plate, grape leaves, lentil soup, hummus, garlic sauce, fattoush salad! Every now and then the family orders one of the kabob entrees. I should really try some of the other items on the menu, but I love my faves too much. 😋❤ Also great for catering events... used to order regularly for work, when our offices were close by. Check it out in the Westgate shopping plaza!

Stopped in based on online reviews and soooooo glad we did! Super delicious sandwiches. We tried four on our visit. Chicken Tawook, Beef and Chicken Shawarma, and Gyro. All tasty delicious and fresh!!! Super nice staff. I tried some baklava on the ride home and also super delicious. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant if you are in the area!

Best & freshest fried kibbeh I’ve had in a long time. Casing is thin wheat, lots of meat! Guys working are always friendly.

Yelp
Delicious!! A perfect location, fantastic food and the people are de-E-lightful. I've eaten here so many times that I sometimes just make up a dish. You know what? They always deliver something so tasty and always whole foods. None of the boxed stuff. The service is perfect!

Yelp
Stopped in here for a quick takeout dinner with my dad. I had heard good things about it from friends but had never been before. My dad, bless his heart, was a bit overwhelmed with the menu and the guy working was incredibly helpful and patient. We ordered two chicken tawook Greek salads ($11.50 each), side orders of hummus and tabbouleh (I believe each were around $6), and an extra side of toum. The tabbouleh and hummus were both excellent - the hummus in particular was some of the best I've had to be honest. It was very light and airy and had an excellent flavor. The toum was also top-notch and made for an excellent complement to the meal. The salads were good, they were very generous with the feta cheese and the portions were large. The chicken was tender and seasoned well. I would probably opt to get one of the platters next time I come since the salad was just a little boring. Overall this is a great, affordable, family-operated spot serving up excellent food. I would definitely return either for takeout again or to dine in.

Yelp
Everything was amazing, came from Indianapolis and this the best middle eastern food we had, the serve there gave us free desserts too!

Yelp
Solid lunch option in a convenient, bustling location (the Westgate strip/area). I stopped in here in an attempt to treat myself with a yummy lunch to fuel up for a couple hours of focused work at the nearby AADL Westgate branch. Walked into Star's Cafe and ordered for dine in - the Chicken Tawook sandwich combo meal, which comes with hummus and tabbouleh. Got a number, sat down at one of many small tables inside (pretty no frills and casual), and waited while my meal was prepared and brought to me (about ~10min later). The meal was good! Very generous portion for one, and tasty. The chicken in the sandwich (wrap) was flavorful and juicy, with crisp veg and a nice pickle crunch. The garlic sauce was pretty mild (I do usually like a good pungent garlic sauce, even if others around me don't appreciate it). The hummus was decent, with the tahini flavor forward. Tabbouleh was ok, not the best in Ann Arbor. But it was all best combined (ie scooping some hummus and tabbouleh onto the wrap with each bite). The meal came with an extra baggy of pita, which I didn't think was needed. Good value for the price and amount of food. One thing - it's January and it was really cold inside the cafe. I needed to keep my heavy winter coat on, fully zipped up, to be comfortable dining in. Looking around and it wasn't just me; most everyone else there were also wearing their winter coats.

Yelp
I finally got to try this place. It's a cute, small spot with limited seating. I came at lunch rush and they were very busy, with good reason. I ordered the cauliflower sandwich combo, which came with hummous and tabbouleh. It was all excellent! I'll return to try the Riz b har sandwich , falafels and meat items.

Yelp
Delicious menu options made ordering difficult.... We wanted it all!! Order at the counter and food it delivered quickly to your table. The garlic toum sauce is EPIC!! Can't wait to go back

Yelp
Great place for lunch or an early dinner with free parking and access to a library and TJMaxx! The sandwich's are always fresh and quick and the staff is friendly. My favorites are the falafel and eggplant feta pita. Fries are awesome! The spinach pie is okay, more of a bread baked with spinach inside. I prefer the a phyllo type with loads of spinach inside. Best Mediterranean restaurant in Ann Arbor IMO.
google avatar

Nataliya Z.

Yelp
If you like a selection of meats and vegetables for lunch, this Mediterranean spot is for you. My lentil soup and Baba Ghannouj (eggplant spread) were tasty. The service was very friendly. I recommend.
google avatar

Brendan R.

Yelp
Delicious falafel wrap and grape leaves! The price was so reasonable and very friendly, fast service.

Yelp
I love coming here every week for their delicious and flavorful chicken sharwarma. The owners are absolutely amazing - they're always so friendly and quick in serving me. I can't recommend this place highly enough!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a cute "hole in the wall" cafe that is hidden within a shopping center. I wanted to try this place because Middle Eastern/North African cuisine is my favorite. I ordered the gyro salad and falafels. The falafels came out steaming hot! They were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They came with tahini sauce and the dish was delicious! The greek salad was fresh and crisp with savory dressing. So good! I will definitely be back! So glad I found this place!

Mawuli B.

Yelp
Their food is really good and affordable. The best part is the hospitality. Lovely to be here.
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
The service and the food was not good, the food was bland, we ordered shawarma sandwiches and they were so plain, I could barely taste any garlic sauce and the meat was not flavorful either
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Good food. I have enjoyed the chicken tawook pita wrap, and the mujadra plate. They do lots of to go business and have a small to medium interior seating area. They clearly get to know their regulars and service is friendly.

Ceci T.

Yelp
While the agave smoothie was delectable, I wasn't too sure about our other orders. I may be picky, but I found the Falafel patties to have some burnt taste to them without many other flavors. Same goes for the lentil soup. Wish I would have gotten some other meats and other veggies, as those seemed to have the best reviews! Didn't have to wait long for the food, (lots of staff) though, and there were lots of options to choose from. A nice place to stop by if in the mood for some sort of Mediterranean as they should have something to your liking- just don't expect anything of super high quality or taste.
google avatar

Abby B.

Yelp
We ordered a big stack of take-out from Star's (I think the platter for two and the baklava assortment). It was a LOT of food, and there was some good and some not-so-good: The good: the baklava was unreal amazing. It tasted fresh and very pistachio-forward, which we loved. The sauces were all incredible and the falafels, grape leaves, and kibbeh were gone within minutes. The pita and hummus were fantastic as well. The not-so-good: sadly the meat was all really over cooked for us. That could be a personal preference, but the shish kafta was so dry it was hard to eat. We will definitely be back to try their sandwiches and more!
google avatar

Yelp
The crushed lentil soup is the BEST i've ever had. This is some seriously good & authentic food. The chicken gyro, falafel & hummus are delicious. I always get extra tahini and garlic sauce to pair with anything and everything. This is a place I always order ahead from, as it can get busy during the lunch hour.

Edward V.

Yelp
Food is solid Had the chicken shawarma wrap and Mrs had falafel. Liked both. Fresh and tasty Small diner like space

Yelp
Quick, easy, and delicious. Presently, only serving up takeout. It is a great option for Mid Eastern fare as we had beef kabobs, chicken tawook, cauliflower, hummus, and fatoush salad, and falafel. Everything was great. Surprisingly, the chicken was my favorite. even though it was white meat it was tender and moist. The kabob was a little bland, but we ordered extra garlic sauce that adds a burst of flavor to every bite. The meat dishes came with rice on the side. They also included a bunch of pita.

Yelp
This café is located in the Westgate shopping center in Ann Arbor Michigan. The falafel was nice and hot, airy and fresh, baklava was yummy and the chicken and rice soup was the star of the show, lemony and absolutely delicious!!! The chicken tawook was a little dry but that's okay because it was still tasty. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been to Westgate Shopping Center a few times, but it's the first time Star's Cafe caught my eye! I don't know why I didn't notice it before, but I'm glad it did. I ordered over the phone for a pick up within 15 minutes. It was a fantastic value for the amount of delicious food: *Hummus - ordered a medium and it was in a large takeout box! They also provided plenty of pita to go on along with it! *Baba Ghannouj - loved how creamy & smoky this was. Very tasty. Also ordered a medium so we had lots of dips! *Chicken Gyro Wrap - great flavors & juicy chicken! *Gyro Plate (Marinated Slices of Lamb & Beef served on Mjaddara [Cooked Lentil & Rice] and Tabbouli Salad) - This takeout box was so heavy because it was packed with the food. The gyro was really tasty! When I come back next, I gotta try some of their spicy foods as well as see if I can order some pickles on the side..they were delicious!!
google avatar

Jesus E.

Yelp
So glad I finally got to try Star's Cafe! Quick and easy pick up experience and really great customer service! Really enjoyed the feast we had from here. The hummus was so creamy and delicious. I also really loved the falafel. My Shish Tawook dish was also incredible. The chicken was so flavorful, tender and juicy! Definitely will be back for takeout again!!

John A.

Yelp
The chicken schwarma is the best in town. Hummus is always spoton in taste. When I want Arabic food , this the place to go.
google avatar

Miche R.

Yelp
I always feel at home at Star's. Today Moe made me a Turkish coffee. Although this is not a usual I am so thankful for the care he took in making and delivering it to my table. The smile, the cardamom, the strong sipping coffee... Star's is wonderful.
google avatar

Yelp
I was in town and craving some good Middle Eastern food. Pulled up Yelp and found this place. I was also looking for convenience to be able to quickly park and get my food. With that being said, this place is located inside of a strip mall with plenty of parking available in the parking lot. The customer service is top notch, the food is fresh and flavorful! I got the lunch special with the chicken sandwich and Hummus. They have limited seating indoor and a few tables outside. Overall, a wonderful experience! I would highly recommend!

Yelp
Star's Cafe is just a gem. We've been there in person prior to the pandemic and enjoyed dining in. We've also ordered takeout a few times and it was quick, easy, and safe. Everything is just so good. The Riz B Har sandwich is one of my favorite sandwiches...of all time? The combination of items (put pickles and toum on anything and I'm there, honestly) and however they prepare the eggplant is just incredible. Their sides are very good, too -- hummus, baba ghannouj, tabbouli, falafel all solid. I've also enjoyed their lentil soup. My partner enjoys the Spicy Chicken sandwich. Frankly, I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu here.
google avatar

Chad M.

Yelp
We got a shawarma, gyro, smoothie and juice and it was all very mediocre. I was a bit sad it wasn't as good as the ratings.
google avatar

Erin R.

Yelp
Stars is our favorite place to go for hummus and babaganoush! Everything I've ever gotten is fantastic: the chicken lemon and rice soup, chicken shawarma sandwich, falafel. All incredible. My favorite thing to order is the sampler platter #2. It comes with hummus, babaganoush, falafel, tabouli, stuffed grape leaves, and pita.

FoodBob C.

Yelp
You let me down yelp. Edible but just spinach pie inedible swarhma ehhh just not that good anything Gyros subpar falafel strange flavor everything below average. Not bad enough to send back Not good enough to go back Terrible taziki

Maggie K.

Yelp
Delicious food, I got the chicken deluxe sandwich, delicious, and falafel and hummus Was also delicious. Also their smoothies are really good. Great service as well. I wish I had taken a pic but couldn't wait to eat lol.

Allison R.

Yelp
I've been coming to Star's for years. I finally made a Yelp account just to leave a positive review, because of the mind-blowing chicken curry l just had. It was amazing. l love it. Eat here. That is all.

Yelp
Still one of my favorite take out options in Ann Arbor. Quality has definitely stayed solid in the last few years since I wrote my previous review and we've definitely relied on them for dinner many, many times since then. I still love the hummus and housemade pita chips but I've added a few plates to my rotation. The crushed lentil soup is a fave and, for my entree, my go to is usually the chicken tawook meal with rice and pita. So good. The chicken is juicy and it usually lasts me two meals. Delicious! Service is SO friendly and helpful. Portions for the entrees are very generous as well.
google avatar

Becky P.

Yelp
Have never had a bad experience or been disappointed by their food. One of the best falafel wraps I've had in Ann Arbor. They hook it up on the pickles and garlic sauce. This is more of a traditional, no frills eatery that has quick service and is affordable. They definitely have a crowd of regulars, rightfully so. You want to be one.
google avatar

Zach B.

Yelp
Love the food here. I'm vegan and there are so many options at Star Cafe. The food is well priced and the falafel and mujadara have been really good. The hummus is a good dip as a side or to share. I'd recommend ordering ahead before you get there, but even if you don't you won't wait too long.

Grace K.

Yelp
They have an amazing Chicken Tawook Sandwich and fast service! My favorite place for Middle Eastern food in A2!
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
This used to be my go-to for their lentil soup, chicken tawook and gyros, but recently have seen a sharp decline in taste and quality. Today my mother was visiting from out-of-town, and the fist place she wanted to go was Star's. Went in and a place that used to be bustling at lunch time, was empty, which we thought was really odd. Sat down with to a Luke warm bowl of flavorless lentil soup, a browning salad with a mere couple strips of char-broiled chicken, and a chicken tawook. We couldn't even eat it and ended up throwing the majority of it away. Such a bummer.

Erin H.

Yelp
I have been coming here for more than 10 years. It remains one of my favorite locations for Mediterranean food. The chicken schwarma sandwich is one of the best I have had, and the friendly people running this place have always created a welcoming environment. Service and quality of the food has remained consistent over the years, and Star's Cafe is a must visit for my growing family when we go to Ann Arbor!
google avatar

Richard C.

Yelp
First time customer. Lentil soup was hot and very tasty. Falafel was among the best I've had. Very fast and friendly service. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Bob M.

Yelp
Wonderful middle eastern "street food." Quick service, friendly staff, reasonable prices and great food. What more could you want?
google avatar

Kevin T.

Yelp
Love this place.  Every visit, the great food is always consistently delicious.  The Crushed Lentil soup is a must (especially on a cold day). Try it with a squeeze of lemon  With a bowl of soup, I have only the room to handle a sandwich.  My favorite is the Chicken Tawook: Charbroiled chicken, tomato,  pickles, lettuce and garlic sauce. I have them toss in some chili sauce too. It's all tolled up in a freshly grill pita. Always great,  friendly service.

Stone M.

Yelp
In this time period of staff shortages for restaurants and widely varying standards of PPE usage this place is now my gold standard. Today is the first time I ate here in recent memory and I was pleasantly shocked at the calm demeanor of the cashier, the overall professionalism of the staff (especially the way they all worked together - you can tell a lot about a place by the body language of the staff!), and for me especially the usage of masks and gloves by everyone handling food. I didn't see a single pair of nose holes poking out the top of any masks! (Amazing what becomes important in life.) All that aside, their food is delicious and comforting, if a little greasy. The prices are very good for what you get - also something you can't take for granted in this during-pandemic economy. Will definitely eat here again, bring my family, and strongly recommend to friends and coworkers.

Deb B.

Yelp
Their chicken gallaba is quite possibly the most delicious thing I've ever eaten. That is all.

D H.

Yelp
This is a great place! Consistently great tasting and fresh food, serviced with top notch customer service. They could actually handle moving to a larger space. They have some of the best Mediterranean food around. The lentil soup is always hot and fresh. My favorite is the spicy grape leaf sandwich. They have a few tables but do a large carry out business. If you haven't tried them yet, I highly recommend them.
google avatar

Don R.

Yelp
Great lemon chicken soup and spicy chicken sandwich. Great little place gunned in the mist of an outside shopping area. Hugs
google avatar

Danielle F.

Yelp
AUTHENTIC AMAZING food! Family run, home cooked REAL food, reminds me of home. Middle Eastern cooking at its finest!

Liam G.

Yelp
Fantastic food and amazing customer service, could not recommend this place more. And the fact that it's local just makes it that much better.
google avatar

Jess D.

Yelp
This place is an Ann Arbor gem, acknowledged by all my townie friends. If you're from Ann Arbor you love Star. Chicken shawarma wrap and cauliflower wrap are my go-tos -- fresh, flavorful and just so tasty. Lentil soup is consistently good and not too salty (I run into heavy salt often with lentil soups). Staff is friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Favors B.

Yelp
It's the Holly Land at its best. Best falafel in the Ann Arbor & metro Detroit area. The food is all authentic just as if in the streets of Palestine . Thank you and will be back again and again anytime I'm in the area.

Joyce B.

Yelp
Fantastic! I can only go so long w/o having their spicy chicken wrap. It is the most flavorful sandwich ever with a different taste in each bite. Been coming here a long time and their service, quality, and friendliness has never waned. Wish I could give them more stars! JB
