Hands down some of the best quality beef and chicken I’ve ever cooked. Made me actually like ground beef again! Makes Whole Foods look disgusting. I never go anywhere else now.

Update - the owner reached out and made this right immediately . I really appreciate the level of attention and service. Bought (or so i thought) 1.5 lbs of hanger steak only to receive in the end flap or flank steak - but def was not hanger. Really dissapointed with it.

Originally felt unwelcome ms the first time my partner and I went in…. After leaving a not so great review, someone reached out to apologize and explained that it was a hectic day of delivery and everyone was stressed. I appreciate the honesty. Luckily for google reviews, I was able to express my experience and it was acknowledged in a thoughtful way.

Customer service at Staubitz is simply not good. I went to Staubitz recently and made a simple order, the store was empty and the employee was clearly annoyed that I was taking time off his Iphone. When my order finally came I asked to add something and clearly they didn’t like it. Seems like asking them to open a fridge in a butcher shop and pull another cut is asking too much. I thought the whole point of buying meat in a butcher shop is having the butchers cut the meat to your liking, showing you how the product looks before charging you, etc. If you want a steak with a side of attitude, then come to Staubitz.

Honestly, the worst butcher shop in the neighborhood. Their sausages are prepackaged from large manufacturers. They don’t have half the products that they list. Disappointed every time I come. Go to Paisanos around the corner instead Edit: After a year the owner decided to respond. Claiming that they make their sausages in house. The photos on your own Google maps page here show your deli case filled with sausages from D’Artagnan, not made in house. D’artagnan is a great sausage maker. I like their products. But I can buy them online or at the grocery store. I don’t need to go to a butcher shop to get them. If I remember correctly I think you had a sweet Italian sausage that you made in house. Perhaps it’s very good. Both Paisanos and dellapietras have a dozen plus different varieties they make in house. Your customer service is lovely. Always warm and welcoming. But a warm welcome without a wide selection of house made meats does not a butcher shop make. And I’m glad you’ve been around for over 100 years. My grandma was also around for over 100 years, and was very warm and welcoming. She also didn’t make her own sausages in house. Y’all have a lot in common.

Clean and the customer service is friendly and attentive. prices are fair and the products are fresh and a lot of variety in their gourmet products. are you sure to check out the turn of the century check out booth. Nothing like this place in New York.

If you havent been to Staubitz Market, do yourself a favor a visit them. Besides the fact that it is one of the oldest butcher shops in the area, the array of products and meats is fantastic! The quality is superb. The staff is wonderful and very helpful! Looking forward to visiting again!

This is a very old school meat shop. I would say they mostly specialize in beef products but they really do have a mix of everything. While they unfortunately do not offer sandwiches like many of the other slightly less old shops nearby, they do have a terrific selection of goods. Yes they are pricey but it's an old beef shop in the middle of a fancy part of Brooklyn so I'm not exactly sure what you're expecting. I personally go here for their outstanding roast beef. I prefer it on the rarer end but not super pink and I have 0 complaints about theirs. Nice staff also.

Honestly baffled by my experience. I ordered a piece of meat days ago- they called me today to confirm I was coming in, and I said I'd be there in 20 mins. I arrive - give my order number - and wait 20 mins for them to cut it??!?!!!? It doesn't make sense. No explanation, no apology. There were two other customers in the store and 5 or 6 people working behind the counter. I gave them a try, I regret it and I definitely won't be coming back. Waste of my time standing in there.

I'll start with the fun facts first because... well, they are fun! Staubitz is New York City's oldest butcher shop - bet that's not on your tourist guide for NYC so ya welcome! Also, you may have heard of bodega cats, but have you met the lovely white feline that resides in this shop? He is a beaut. I am a carnivore, and over the past several years of living in Brooklyn, I've been on a journey to try as many butcher shops within a five mile radius as possible. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Some simply didn't have a wide enough selection to satisfy my gluttonous heart. Others made me feel instantly inferior with that snobby attitude that I could not possibly know meat like they, the professionals, know meat. But my biggest bone to pick (pun intended) with most is that they are quick to charge the premium prices, yet are not so quick to trim my precious meat of fat or rid it of the weighty bones. Staubitz Market has earned the spot of my regular butcher store. The service is quick, knowledgeable, and friendly. The prices are quite reasonable, especially for the quality I've been consistently getting. They've got the meats! Steaks galore, lamb, rabbit, boar, endless options for sausages, duck, ribs, oxtails, rotisserie chickens, just to name a few things to get your hands on. Heck, you can even order a whole pig here if you're in a pinch for a luau. I also like that I can pick up basic provisions here to go with my meat when I'm not in the mood to schlep all the way to a grocery store. Pastas, sauces, bread, spices, marinades, specialty snacks imported from Italy, jarred and canned goods. They even have cold cuts and cheeses for your sandwiches and charcuterie boards. What else could a gal like me ask for?!

My grandmother introduced me to Staubitz a decade ago. I never went a holiday without preparing perfect steaks, chickens, pork, rabbit and more from this butcher. The quality was unparalleled. Family & friends begged for my dishes on every occasion. We used to have their charcuterie on every board. That was until recently. We've noticed quality has suffered in the last few years. It's still great, but it is not as excellent as it once was. I've found myself too old and too busy to wait for hours in line after placing orders days or a week in advance. My advice for the owner: Please fix the quality issues with your supplier. Please work out a better system for order pickups on high demand holidays and busy weekends. I find myself using other butchers and it really breaks my heart since my family was always so loyal to Staubitz.

A sad state of affairs with Staubitz. They close for the major holidays. They ask for handouts from the clients. And their selection is limited compared to the better butchers in the neighborhood like Paisanos or Dellapietras.

If I'm being 100% honest, I don't know much about butcher shops or meats, but this place and the people who work here make it easy to get what you're looking for and are more than willing to explain the differences in certain meats and cuts if you're as lost as I am. There's a solid selection of items from sausages (breakfast, spicy, etc.) to steaks, to pork chops, and I imagine you can absolutely find whatever meat it is you're looking for. I even heard the guy behind the counter ask this customer one time if they wanted the type of pork that was grass fed/etc. or the standard, and I appreciate the fact that they make sure you know which one you're getting, even if you don't ask up front. There's also an entire wall of sauces and seasonings and pastas and other gourmet type items -- if you're looking for something a little different than what you'd normally find at Trader Joe's. These items are pricier, but that's expected, and the meats are priced very decently.

Downhill alert. I get the old time butcher thing, but this place is resting on its laurels. Just spent an hour in a pre-Xmas line, incredibly slow, lackadaisical service like it was a Tuesday in July. That would be excusable if the meat were special. It is not. While waiting outside I saw them bring in chicken from Bell & Evans (fine, but Key Food), Leidy's (Bell & Evans-level pork), and then, shockingly, Tyson Meat, which is more like Purdue level. Just cause you put these things in a case doesn't make them special. Don't be fooled by the bougie stuff on the shelves. Paesano or Dellapietra the better bets.

Meat. Meat. Meat. Oh how I love thee. Vegetarians should probably stay away from the great, neighborhood stalwart Staubitz. Not that their cheese selection is lacking, but you're going to have a hard time finding better meat or a nicer crew. These guys know their cow, pig, chicken, turkey, lamb and all other juicy animals that we consume. Let them help you pick a cut based on what you're trying to do. They'll guide you to an appropriate weight and suggest accompaniments too. They've been in the hood for many years -since 1917 - and are among NYC's oldest butchers still around. Prices are very reasonable and actually better than some local competitors. They are the original suppliers of steak to Peter Lugers so you get an idea of the high standards you're going to get. If you've got a date with your grill or broiler and want to impress your friends you've found your supplier.

Love this neighborhood butcher but I challenge you to go in and find a single one of their many employees wearing a mask / not having it dangling off their chin. How hard is this?

Really really want to support local but the prices are beyond insane (was charged about $19 for a pound of grass fed ground beef. Yes you heard me correctly). The prices just aren't worth the quality IMO.

This place sold me meat that smells like fish and then tells Mercato its a lie BS. I lost out in money and had to dispose the meat. And to top it off they lie and Mercato took my review off wtf? Dont buy from these people. Be warned. Also this is not Prime Meat.

They have anything and everything meat-related. Not just the tasty flesh itself; I was actually particularly impressed by the back wall. They appear to have every sort of sauce, spice, marinade, mustard or anything else you could possibly want to add flavor to the meat on the other side. However, although I can appreciate the history given that Staubitz has been there for over 100 years...that evidently means prices have been rising for that long as well. _________ As I was writing this review, I asked the two girls I was with for something good to write about meat shops. The first instantly lowered her voice and said, "MEEEAAAATTT." The second responded, "SAUUUUSSAAGEEEEE." Those are some smart girls.

Best butcher shop in NYC. Period. Hands down the best steak I have ever eaten and I have lived in Texas & Argentina. I always come here when I am in town for steak and I love to stack up on their edible gifts for souvenirs- amazing locally sourced rubs and spices. Family owned business - you will see the father and son behind the counter. It's a must stop if you are visiting NYC for the first time.

I've only been coming to Staubitz for all of my serious meat purchases since 2001. High quality, knowledgable helpful butchers who are always glad to cut to order, and a great selection of charcuterie and a small selection of quality cheeses. If you haven't had one of their Newport steaks cooked over wood or charcoal, you are missing out.

I've never had a butcher before and it feels like such a luxury, but honestly I find the extra cost (compared to key food) is worth it because of the obvious superior quality. John seems to take a real interest, even when it's crazy busy, and the service is friendly and professional.

I've lived in Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Heights all my life (a very long time), and Staubitz has been around for as long as I can remember so they must be doing something right. It has always been considered a high-quality, high-end butcher, and I used to walk from lower Pacific Street to their Court Street location for their excellent meat and service. It's the last of the personal service butchers in this area, so I hope they hang in there.

Old world European charm with the best selection of all natural, grass-fed, and organic meats! It's like walking back in time as soon as you enter. Still has the cashier booth in the back. Great customer service, the butchers are helpful and knowledgeable. They will vacuum seal any of the meats which I found easy to freeze and tastes like fresh when you defrost them. At 104 years old they are the oldest butcher shop in the state of New York. Best butchers with great selection of meats, cheeses, unique gourmet products and lots of sauces, rubs, marinades to complement the meats.

I'm a huge supporter of locally owned business. They take pride in work and this is another place that deserves to be recognized. I just started to wander around Cobble Hill and found this place. It's a little butcher shop with a cool neon sign. Once you walk inside the smell of fresh meats hit you. It can vary from person to person whether or not it smells good or bad to them. They have a few good selections of sauces, marinades and spices. The staff is very helpful to any questions you have. If I wasn't going to be walking around most of the day I would have picked up some meat. I didn't want to be "that guy" on the train with a bag of smelly meats. Definitely a place I would come back to!

mask is mandatory during covid 19 and when i pointed out that not all the member of the staff weren't wearing it, they didn't apologize but with a big dose of arrogance they said +- it's not mandatory - and this happend on the bread with no shield or any protection. you are so irresponsible, you don't care, yuo are not aware of the severity of this pandemic, i will never come back.

Staubitz is the butcher shop in NYC - by far. I have been shopping at the store for more than 38 years and the quality of meat is superb. And the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.

Ordered two tri tip steaks and they sent me two pork loins and I have ten people here for dinner. I've been a long time customer so have my neighbors. I will not be shopping here in the future. Very misleading, especially since they wrote Tri Tip on the loins too.

Beware new management and employees. They are inexperienced and unprofessional. They do not wear masks. They are not knowledgeable about their products. They pay more attention to rotisserie take-out customers. Product quality is still there but customer service is out the window now and I can't believes. Paisanos in the name neighborhood is better ran.

There's often a massive line out the door of Staubitz, and for good reason. The narrow space is packed to the ceiling with pastas, condiments, specialty preserved goods. On the left is the counter, with a huge selection of conventional and dry aged, grass fed beef. I've been a handful of times--for a delicious, grass fed ribeye, beef bones for Pho, and tenderloin for tartare that they ground for me. The last time I went, I paid $38 for a 16oz dry aged, grass fed ribeye, and a 10oz portion of tenderloin: Slightly pricier than Whole Foods but the quality of the product is so much better.

It's all about the quality and the customer service here. Such an old school place, the kind my mom used to take me to as a little girl when she was doing her weekly grocery shopping. The guys at the counter (and one girl) are super friendly (if not a little shy at times) and I always get the feeling that besides slicing cold cuts they would do almost anything for me if I gave them half the chance. You'd think they'd never seen an attractive woman before in their lives. For Godssakes! Somebody let these butchers out of the shop and let them live a little! All that sausage has made them lose their minds!

This is the best butcher shop around, bar none. My grandpa was a butcher, and going there is like visiting him. Only, they're a tad nicer and a lot less lecherous. I mean, they're not lecherous at all -- simply kind and pleasant. Beyond that, the meat is excellent quality and the service is great. These are nice people who have been in the neighborhood a lot longer than any of us, and they know their business. They give great advice on preparation, cooking times, etc. I've run my plans by them and been corrected several times, and their advice is definitely good. They also carry a good, small selection of cheeses, condiments, and frozen foods. There is also a small section of fresh breads. They will take debit for any amount and Mastercard/Visa for larger amounts (over $10 or $20, can't remember). They carry Schaller and Weber's to-die-for double-smoked bacon. Don't even ask for a certain weight; just get the whole chunk. It's so delicious. Staubitz, how I love you.

I Love Staubitz... Ok, thats my review. .. Sigh... okok I get to write more than that. I've been comin to this place since i was a lil kid & before the McFadden family took over. Nothing but the best...no - the B-E-S-T! Prime Meats (of course) - cheese & bread selection - (for a wedding photo shoot; I had the limo driver stop here for pate, bread & cheese!) - condiments, rubs, sauces, jams, advice! :) Over the past 5 years or so, I've cut down on my meat considerably... Then one of my old friends tells me he's getting married & moving to the UK & another who's err single now, tells me he misses my cookin... I ended up spending about $200 on fresh meats -vacuum sealed to cook up a Feast! Yep! Nothin but the BEST! Ya pay a lil more at Staubitz... I'm happy to pay for the level of service and quality the McFaddens & their crew provide! Check 'em out! :)

The first time I heard of Staubitz Market was from an old California acquaintance who'd been living in Brooklyn for about ten years. He spoke of suffering the owner's derision after asking if they carried turkey sausage. He also told me about meeting a Scottish professor at a party who recalled his own experience at Staubitz. The man asked the same owner if they carried haggis, and the owner welled up with emotion, explaining that they were prohibited, but added "God bless you for asking." In an age of marauding vegans, an old school butcher shop like this is a rare and treasured find. The guys behind the counter will gladly help you with special cuts, the quality is unbeatable, and they deliver. Update: July '08. I wanted to bar b que something special for a group of seven or eight young ladies stopping by the neighborhood, and I called Staubitz to ask about a Chateaubriand cut. The fellow on the phone asked how many I was cooking for, and when I explained that it would be eight or nine people he said "so you want the entire tenderloin?" I went ahead and gave him my credit card number and when I stopped by the market to pick up my steak, I could tell by the weight of the bag that it was a serious cut of meat. When I looked at the receipt inside, my heart skipped a beat - one hundred and forty one bucks. Having said this, it was more than enough to feed the entire party, provided sandwiches for the entire following week, and most importantly, was the most tender, juicy cut of meat that I've ever had the fortune to grill. Definitely the place to go for special occasions.

Staubitz sold us the best Thanksgiving turkey we've ever roasted. It was a bird so divine that people are still talking about it many days later. It was succulent, flavorful, and just all around perfect. You've never seen such an incredible specimen of the delicious turkey race. Or maybe you have, if you get your poultry from Staubitz.

So now that you've moved to Brooklyn, you've finally decided to cook for yourself. And what you're planning to cook is STEAK. Good. Staubitz is one of those awesome, old time butcher shops that's going to show up first in your Zagat's guide or whatever reference you're checking up on. But what does that mean? Sure, the place today is completely yuppified, but not too long ago I bought a prime grade, aged, five bone standing rib roast there and it's a meal that my friends still randomly compliment me on. Staubitz has unparallelled cuts of meat. If you want to buy some good beef and you live within a five mile radius, go there (of course, it ain't cheap)!

I love living in a neighborhood where historic, gourmet places like Staubitz thrive. This charming little butcher shop/market sells high-quality and often imported oils, meats, cheeses, pastas, and more. So, essentially all my favorite foods. I will say that I prefer Paisanos, a butcher just a few blocks away, because of price point and ambiance. But Staubitz is still a neighborhood staple!

This is an AMAZING butcher. I get all of our meat here. they are so friendly and helpful. I walk in and they greet me by name. Hows that for neighborhood? The beef stew cuts are the most beautiful- it almost seems a shame to make a stew with chuck that nice. the filet mingnon is beyond beautiful. The pork loin is divine, you barely have to do anything to it because the meat is so fresh. The chickens are fantastic and they also carry the BEST eggs!!! you have to ask for them- local organic eggs. Amazing. and they give kids lollipops. I heart this place. no amex, fyi- cash or visa only

Great place -- especially for veal, veal shoulder, calves liver and other delicate cuts. But it's *WAY* OVER-PRICED. And the steaks? Think again. Why? 1. They are prime steaks but they are not AGED. BOOO!!! 2. The steaks are pre-cut. That means you cannot determine the thickness of your steak when ordering. All the steaks tend to be 1/2"-3/4" thickness which precludes the Strip House/Spark's/Del Frisco experience at home. Other local butchers (like Paisano's) pull out a full, dry-aged standing rib roast and cut to order. 3. They don't have NY strips -- only bone-in shell steaks, also at 1/2"-3/4". 4. Finally, their prices for steak are $10 per pound higher than Paisano's, where they dry-age their beef and cut to order (it's not prime but it's better than Staubitz's steaks because of the aging.) If you insist on prime strip, filet or rib-eye steaks, the butcher at the Garden of Eden on Montague is a better first stop -- and it's $2/pound cheaper!

This place has been around since the early 1900s at least, but probably earlier, with different owners. I work across the street and always see the butchers taking cigarette breaks against the wall of the next-door funeral home. Their stained aprons against the white brick walls are very weirdly picturesque. But I digress... I got a pork shoulder to roast for Thanksgiving, which I rubbed with cocoa and spices. So good! I need to stop being lazy and get a good meaty recipe so I have a reason to shop here some more! I think the prices are reasonable, but I honestly don't really even know...but I don't care! This place is old-timey and cool.

the ultimate test on how you trust your butcher is when you buy ground beef for steak tartare. fragrant-fresh, intensity-tasty, fat-free has to be. i lived in manhattan, in brooklyn and now i m in queens and when i needed steak tartare no matter how inconvenient it is, i land in staubitz. to be or not to be, staubitz is it.

When it starts to get cold, I like to make short rib stew in my slow cooker. It's sort of my intro to November, if you will. Anyway, I decided to check out Staubitz for short ribs. I was afraid that they would be very pricey, since this place has a reputation for costliness (as well as quality). The short ribs were 9.99 and looked lovely. Oxtails were 7.99. I thought the pricing was fair. I know this is not bargain-basement pricing, but I went ahead and bought the shortribs, which were very nicely wrapped for me. Out of curiosity, I stopped in at Union Market and their short ribs were 12.99 a pound, and no oxtails. Stew turned out great. I don't cook red meat all that much but when I do I think I'll give Union Market a miss and head straight to Staubitz.

Good On meats But fewer Sausages than Paisanos. Lots of sauces for small shop.

Best butcher shop in NYC. Let them know a day or two ahead if you want them to prepare beef carpaccio. They prepare special cuts and roasts so beautifully, and have these incredibly fresh, organic, tender small Canadian chickens, organic pork chops and game meats. Oh, and there is a terrific selection of other gourmet bottled, canned, boxed, jarred and frozen products that are always worth trying. We are spoiled here in Brooklyn.

A visit here makes for an excellent Sunday stroll stop. "Our meat market started out in Germany, too, but we've been much longer in New York than Lobel's," the head butcher proudly told me at Cobble Hill's Staubitz Market, which was established in the neighborhood when it was known as South Brooklyn back in 1917. The place is now a butcher and gourmet grocery, peddling some of the best looking prime meat you've ever seen. One of the virtues of this establishment is the range of steaks offered - not just filets, strips, porterhouses, and ribeyes, but prime versions of skirt, hanger, and Newport steaks, too, at correspondingly lower prices. And there's no better place in the five boroughs to experience that old butcher shop feel, with the smell of blood in your nostrils."

I went to buy a chicken today and wanted to order a leg of lamb for Easter. I was told I'd have to wait or call the order in. We shop here at least once a week and buy meat for holidays here. We try to support local merchants. If they don't want our business we'll buy the leg of lamb at Whole Foods.

Love, love, love Staubitz best meat market! I walked by forever and finally decided to stop in few months back and now has turned into a weekly must. I absolutely love this family business with the historic family portraits in the store over the years. Best meats and service in the area. They also have a nice selection of sauces, italian items, and Amy's Bread. Not sure why others have stated Staubitz is expensive, as I think they are very reasonable in comparison to Dellapietras. As Dellapietras which generally seems to run double the price no where near the same level of service.

What a treat! I heard about this famous butcher shop and recently upon meeting a friend for breakfast had an opportunity to stop in. It has the feel of an old neighborhood butcher shop with quality meats and men who can provide the guidance to cook it to perfection. My quest for the visit was to purchase rubs. To my delight the guy spent 10 minutes schooling me on the different types and detailing how best they are to be used. I bought three and followed his directions with a great outcome. He also explained the aging of their steaks which will be my next purchase but first I need to cook the ones already in my freezer. I did purchase the oxtails which looked amazing. Looking forward to my next visit. You can tell the team has great pride and knowledge in what they do!
