A blast from the past. You ever have one of those places that just screams at you from years gone by? Ditto's is that place for me. In the back of that restaurant sits its deli counterpart that holds a slightly less special spot in my mind's eye. Not because it's not great, but only because delis that close in the early afternoon don't produce the same type of memories that a frequented night haunt do. And, back in the day before hipsters *discovered* the Highlands or were even born or a forethought, Ditto's was the place for dinner and drinks. I lived close by back then, and this was a regular spot for my friends and me. Stevens and Stevens is the older brother that goes to bed a bit earlier, but makes a mean sandwich.
I always liked coming here for lunch. They have been around for years, and are well established. Louisville doesn't have many delis. It's always been that way, and it's just not our thing. If we do have delis, they aren't as likely to serve what Stevens and Stevens does. I remember trying my first cup of matzo ball soup here. You can't beat their soups, sandwiches, and sides, and they have very little in the way of competition.
I hadn't been in over ten years, when I decided to make my way here for any sandwich involving pastrami. Well, I came to the right place. I walked in within an hour of closing, which was nice since I had my choice of seating. I ordered half of an 80th & Broadway and a side of potato salad. The 80th & Broadway comes with hot pastrami, grilled onions, crazy Chinese slaw, provolone, and Honeycup mustard all on toasted challah. It is delicious. I love the contrast between the pastrami and the sweetness of the slaw and honey mustard. The potato salad was also very good. It's of the mustard variety and has a slight sweet flavor as well.
All of the staff were super friendly. My food didn't take long either. The prices are definitely competitive and a nice lunch value. The inside was also clean. The only negative can be parking, but when I came, I found a spot right be the door. Making this trip back to Stevens and Stevens makes me want to revisit Ditto's. Nothing but good times and memories there.
