As a Chicago native, now and then I get nostalgic for a good old "depression sandwich." Steve's Snappin' Dogs provides a casually adorable dining environment, I've been there twice, and ordered the same thing each time.
To be 100% authentic, technically a Chicago dog should use a poppy seed bun.
Also, the relish is supposed to be an unnatural neon green color. https://www.mashed.com/226340/the-untold-truth-of-the-chicago-style-hot-dog/ To be clear, this distinction bears absolutely no bearing on the flavor, as this variety is produced by adding blue food coloring to regular relish. According to Forbes , Vienna Beef started dyeing relish in order to make it pop in promotional photographs, where ordinary relish looked dull and unappetizing.
I didn't invent the rules, and I guess I am not a purist because I follow the school of also including cucumber along with mandatory ingredients (yellow mustard, bright green relish, fresh chopped onions, juicy red tomato wedges, a kosher-style pickle spear, a couple of spicy sport peppers and dash of celery salt."

Someday, I hope to escape my compulsion to order the same thing every time and try one of the other 50 varieties or a smash burger (looks hella good).
I didn't look to see if they had fresh brewed iced tea when I ordered the add on french fry/drink combo so I stood there stupidly in front of the soda machine for a moment before settling on soda water. Should have got a beer instead.
Anyhow, I do love this place! Staff is welcome, service is speedy and watching the people of Colfax out the window is entertaining.
