The Ultimate Guide to Hot Dogs and Sausages in Denver

"Every dog seemingly has its day at this colorful Colfax, where the options range from classic Chicago-style and Jersey dogs (a hot dog topped with bacon, spicy mustard, red onion, relish and sauerkraut) to the modern creation that is the Mex-Si: a bacon-wrapped and deep-fried dog topped with lettuce, tomato, jalapeño, sour cream, cheese, and salsa. There’s even a Denver dog, which features bacon, chili con carne, and jalepenos and is served on a tortilla. Bonus: When you’re traveling through DIA, check out the Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs outpost at Concourse B near Gate 24." - Andra Zeppelin, Paul Albani-Burgio

Google
The hotdogs here are pretty creative and tasty. You will find influence from all parts of the country as their dogs are inspired by regional tastes. From the Bronx to Chicago, and from the Frontera (U.S./Mexico border) to the Rockies, there are hot dogs, burgers, and other delights for every palate. Today, I had the Bronx and Dallas Dog. My partner had the Chimichanga dog. My only beef, pun intended, was the chili on the Dallas dog tasted a little too much like it had a McCormack’s chili powder mix aftertaste. Other than that the hotdogs were pretty good. Also, the lemonade felt like it was missing a little something. It was still good, don’t get me wrong. I just want lemonade that’s so good and tasty that I will want another glass. This was not that lemonade for me. I still recommend this place if you’re looking to try something a little different.

Google
Awesome hot dogs! I got the rippin Rockies and a Chicago dog because I love Chicago dogs. The Chicago dog was pretty good, but not my fave ever. The Rippin Rockies on the other hand was pure delight and a wonderful surprise! I would 100% go back and try more dogs in the future.

Google
This place is addicting. The food is definitely original and unique. There is not a hot dog or item in this place that I have found to be disappointing. Unfortunately they are closing August 30th 2024. So if you're looking for a really scrumptious hot dog make sure to try the Denver Dog. It is wrapped in a tortilla for Pete's sakes! The Blinky is also a fascinating hot dog. A must try place before it's gone! Make sure to get the tater tots there to die for.

Google
I love little spots like this. The hardest thing was trying to narrow down the choices to the hot dogs I wanted to try. The hot dogs were good, hit the spot. Good flavor, the toppings were delicious. Would definitely come back and try out some other dogs. Highly recommend.

Google
God I could eat at Steve’s Snappin dogs 3 times a week. Sure Id be dead in a year but I’d die with a smile on my chubby face. Seriously awesome dogs and brats served many different and unique ways. Fantastic fries and onion rings….and amazing sweet potato tots If you havent been go

Google
Good hot dog spot with plenty of options. Almost any menu item can be made vegan/vegetarian, so would definitely recommend for people with those particular dietary restrictions. Food was a little pricey, but the quality and portions were reasonable.

Google
Haven't been here in a long time and don't regret having stopped. Their hotdogs were as delicious as they were before, if not better! The Chimi-Dog was the bomb in flavor! It was nice to sit and eat in the covered/heated patio. Their staff was super friendly and made sure we had what we needed. Will be coming back for sure!

Google
Can't say I'm going to miss this place as I fear both times I had it, I was not given veggie dogs when I've ordered them. Been sick since Wednesday and when I asked (after already eating) if I had been served a veggie dog, I get the response of "no that was a real hot dog, wasn't it GOOD?!" I haven't had pork in five years. Seems like something you should really pay attention to in case of medical issues like I have. It's always a fear of mine but I shouldn't have to double check to make sure I'm served what I'm ordered. Oh well. Back to mustard's last stand.

Yelp
I just found out that Steve's Snappin' D9gs will be closing on October 19, 2024 after serving this community for two decades. The place had a great ambiance and was always full of smiles. It wasn't fancy by any means, but neither are hot dogs and not all great things have to be made fancy. I wish all involved the best of luck and thank them for serving the community for two decades.

Yelp
Five stars to the end!!! It is so very sad that Steve's is closing after all these years - but I am very glad he going out on his terms and that my Sweetheart and I got to have a dog here one last time. Having read an article last week that Steve's was closing up shop, my wife and I made it a point to visit on a recent week day off for a lunch time dog. I of course had my usual Bronx dog and an order of onion rings. All top notch and all so tasty. We will certainly miss the charm and character of the once service station set up. We overheard that the airport location will be around for another couple of years so that's a huge plus - and while we were there, Steve did talk to my wife and I (such a wonderfully friendly and humble gentleman) and said the new place that is moving in will likely carry a couple of their dogs on their menu.

Yelp
Really great dogs. They look exactly like the pictures on the menu. I was surprised how nice the inside and seating area was, it's hard to tell from the outside.

Yelp
Steve's Snappin' Dogs do just that when you eat them - they snap on every bite. At that point the smoky flavor kicks in and you're sent to hot dog heaven. So many creations here with cool names like Bronx Dog, Denver Dog, Rippin Rockies Dog, Atlanta Slaw Dog and many more, each with their own combination of toppings. I went with a Snappin' Dog. It's the namesake so you can assume it's the basic dog and you'd be right. But wait, you can create you're own combination with free topping options or some you pay extra for. Most times I just want mustard and onions and I do that here but this time I also want to try one with the NY Onion Sauce they offer. Excellent. Add the nice soft buns and I'm good to go. I love the little building where you can just walk and order. Nice bright colorful menu boards to read. They also sell burgers and sandwiches with an assortment of sides.

Yelp
God I love mes a great dog......and Steve's Snappin Dogs delivers the goods. I really liked the kitsch decor. Great menu where there is something for everyone. All four of us loved our dogs: From the Chicago, Brat, to the Vegetarian each was a hit. Awesome onion rings. Only downside? I live 5 minutes away and could eat here everyday ( sure I'd be dead within a year but they'd throw me in the ground with a smile on my face) If you live here or are visiting you should make it a point to try one of their dogs or specialty sandwiches. Thank Steve for the great spot! I'll be back!

Yelp
I Absolutely Recommend #stevessnappindogs, someone recommended it while I was on Colorado/Colfax for a meeting. They also highly recommended their #phillysteak sandwich , he said it was the best in #denver... and he was right. It's basically a simple little unassuming restaurant, but how make, hotdogs, burgers and Philly Steak sandwiches... Amazing!!

Yelp
Been coming to Steve's for many years, and it is one of the only places I can think of that everything has been great every single time, without fail. The dogs are tasty, unique, and look EXACTLY like their photo on the menu. The fries are crunchy and plentiful, and the green beans are snappin' good. I usually go Bronx dog. Steve himself is almost always there, doing everything from cleaning tables to making food, but still loves to chat your ear off if you'll let him. Plenty for everyone, even the chili snobs and the vegetarians. The kids love it too.

Yelp
Stopped here after the zoo, really pleased with the chili cheese dog. The hot dog itself was nice and juicy with a good umami flavor, the bun tasted fresh, very soft, and chili sauce had a "greasy spoon" appeal. The ambience isn't fancy, pretty dust and run down, but it set my expectations up for a good hot dog. They have sodas and bottled beer. I would recommend for a quick bite.

Yelp
I searched Yelp for a good hot dog in Denver, and my fellow Yelpers did not let me down. I had the Ripper and my wife had a chili cheese dog (Dallas Dog). Everything was amazing! Service was top notch! What a fun place this was. I would definitely come back here!

Yelp
Great selection of dogs & brews at the airport location. Staff is always pleasant, service is quick & the food is great. I rarely eat any airport food & hot dogs are not my favourite food but I highly recommend you try this place. Prices are reasonable & the beer selection is top notch with several Colorado craft brews.

Yelp
First time here and loved it! Service was super friendly and fast. Our hot dogs were hot and tasty and the enclosed, heated patio was great. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Been in Denver longer than you most likely have been alive and a couple of days ago was the first time I'd stopped at SSD. What an idiot. Love the place. Excellent dogs at a bit lower price than what you'll pay for those fancier dogs at Biker Jim's. Steve's been doing his doggy thing for decades on Colfax just west of Colorado Blvd. Bottom line - a great place to get an excellent tubesteak. Make it "to go" cause Steve's doesn't pack a lot of atmosphere, but nonetheless absolutely worth your business. David "Hot doggity" M

Yelp
We stumbled on this and it was exactly what we thought it would be, good hot dogs quickly.

Yelp
Steve's is my go-to hotdog spot. I have not had a bad dog or smashburger from there and I have tried all variations on the menu over the years. My go-to's? The homey dog and the atlanta dog but like i said, they are all great. The dogs are snappy, tasty and cooked to order. They offer fries, fried green beans and fried carrots and a couple of other tasty sides. They have delicious desserts like frozen chocolate dipped bananas, shakes, malts and ice cream. Beer on-tap that is fantastic! The service is fast, friendly and it is always welcoming. The building sits in an old service station with an enclosed patio, heated in the cold months. They have leash ties, water and treats for your fur friends that are tagging along as well. If you are craving a great dog or great burger, you can't go wrong at Steve's.

Yelp
Not much is better than a great hotdog on the 4th of July. Steve's delivered - the 'snap' of the caging as you bite into the dog. So satisfying. I went with the Chicago dog and did not regret my choice. My husband got the dog with onion sauce and cheese - he loved it! We shared an order of sweet potato tots, which were some of the best I've had! So delicious! It's been such a long time since I've been here (at least a decade) and I'll make sure it's not that long before I return.

Yelp
As a Chicago native, now and then I get nostalgic for a good old "depression sandwich." Steve's Snappin' Dogs provides a casually adorable dining environment, I've been there twice, and ordered the same thing each time. To be 100% authentic, technically a Chicago dog should use a poppy seed bun. Also, the relish is supposed to be an unnatural neon green color. https://www.mashed.com/226340/the-untold-truth-of-the-chicago-style-hot-dog/ To be clear, this distinction bears absolutely no bearing on the flavor, as this variety is produced by adding blue food coloring to regular relish. According to Forbes , Vienna Beef started dyeing relish in order to make it pop in promotional photographs, where ordinary relish looked dull and unappetizing. I didn't invent the rules, and I guess I am not a purist because I follow the school of also including cucumber along with mandatory ingredients (yellow mustard, bright green relish, fresh chopped onions, juicy red tomato wedges, a kosher-style pickle spear, a couple of spicy sport peppers and dash of celery salt." If you care about hot dog rules or history, also see: https://www.mashed.com/226340/the-untold-truth-of-the-chicago-style-hot-dog/?utm_campaign=cli, Someday, I hope to escape my compulsion to order the same thing every time and try one of the other 50 varieties or a smash burger (looks hella good). I didn't look to see if they had fresh brewed iced tea when I ordered the add on french fry/drink combo so I stood there stupidly in front of the soda machine for a moment before settling on soda water. Should have got a beer instead. Anyhow, I do love this place! Staff is welcome, service is speedy and watching the people of Colfax out the window is entertaining.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Great menu & ambiance. The brat was even better. Might be the best I've ever had! Excited to go back. Quick service & can't be better food!!

Yelp
Visited on 7/14/20 I have elevated to three stars, on this visit I enjoyed the two dogs I ordered, one plain, and one with mustard, relish, and onion. The dogs had a real nice snap to them and enjoyed them as they were nice and hot. The rolls they use are really nice and hold up to any combination of condiments, or combinations that you may like to create

Yelp
If you're looking for the best hotdog in Denver, come here. This place doesn't disappoint. Awesome atmosphere with so much cool history on the walls. Huge menu! We ordered 3 dogs, onion rings, and sweet potato tots. Everything was so good. They have some amazing hot dog combos and such cool names! Service was quick. Check this place out! You won't regret it.

George B.

Yelp
Awesome place to check out on colfax if you want a delicious hot dog. The owner is extremely friendly and has a whole story about his restaurant hanging up by the tables. The hot dogs are absolutely delicious and fun to eat with family and friends. I definitely recommend visiting to take a bite.

Sandy P.

Yelp
Yummy dogs! Love the way the drinks are wrapped in plastic wrap do there is no spillage

Yelp
What a great place! My daughter loves hot dogs, and we were looking for lunch before an afternoon at the zoo... What a treat to stumble on Steve's! And to get our order taken by Steve, the man himself! The dogs are great. We are from California, and we have a local hotel dog joint near our house, but my son said Steve's Chicago Style Dog was better. I loved my Rockies dog, and the indoor environment is great. Next time we are in Denver, and we need a dog, we know where to go!
google avatar

Evan M.

Yelp
This place is actually pretty good. We came here on a whim after taking our daughter to the Zoo. Thought the name was clever and catchy. Been going here ever since for their delicious smash burgers, dogs, and sides. Great value, delicious food, and great service.

Yelp
Updated review with updated star. Being the area lately and not having any decent dog places around I had a hankering. Ordered me a chili cheese dog and I have to say it was awesomely delicious. The restaurant is exactly the same as it was when I wen in, in 2016. Old! You quickly get over that part as soon as sink your teeth into extreme deliciousness! Pretty sure it was Steve working the register and handling the orders. I can't say thank you enough for keeping this iconic place humming. Best dog in town and one of the only places in Denver that specializes in just dogs. Thanks a bunch Steve!

Yelp
Craving a hot dog but want it animal-less? Then Steve's Snappin' Dogs will work wonders for your want. Large menu with many vegetarian friendly items, my fav being the vegetarian green chili fries. The fries are good and sloppy, I wish they were a tad spicier but I understand that it's main stream here. You can get a meatless hot dog in a variety of different styles, I usually get the Chicago style and then normally go back for a second. You can sit outside at picnic tables with your glass of wine or beer. Worth a stop for sure, especially if you're craving a hot dog in any shape or style.

Yelp
Steve's snapping dogs always has great service and even better food. I have eaten here many times over the last ten years and am just now writing a review. On my last visit I ordered the Jersey Dog with all of the toppings and lite sauerkraut. The staff is very attentive and always makes my dogs the way that I like them and not specifically to the menu. Steve himself was there the last time that I got a dog and we spoke briefly about Today America. Super cool guy who is humble and good to his employees. I have had nearly everything on this menu over the last decade so nothing is bad and everything is inexpensive. The restaurant does close at 4pm on Sunday's so keep that in mind when you cruise by and they are closed. This is a great place for a quick bite or to meet up with friend's.

Carol J.

Yelp
Craving hot dogs & fries, excited to finally try this Colfax institution. Ordered 4 different Specialty Dogs, onion rings, fries, and Veg Chili Cheese fries. Our specialty dogs were so tasty, good sized, & generously topped! The actual hot dogs / buns are all you expect & the various toppings are a huge bonus. Unfortunately our orders of "Skin-On Fries", "Panko Onion Rings", & "Vegetarian Chili Cheese Fries" were extremely disappointing. The thin fries (didn't see any skin-on) and thin onion rings looked & tasted indistinguishable from any machine made fast food. Both dry & hard. Did we get a bad batch or did they switch their supply to cheaper, commonly distributed fries/rings? The vegetarian green chili cheese fries had barely a trace of green chili. I actually checked our receipt to make sure we ordered it & not just cheese fries. We'll definitely be back for the tasty dogs & to try the rest of the menu and wish they can get the fries/rings to resemble their tasty descriptions!
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Great dogs and tater tots. Prices were pretty high for what you get, but I would come back when I am in the mood for a hot dog with great toppings. A large variety or toppings and choices for the dogs. We enjoyed the Chicago Dog, Rockies Dog, and Bronx Dog.

Yelp
I was at the Museum of Science and Nature and the Yelp app suggested that I eat at Steve's Snappin' Dogs. I was hungry at that time and called Steve to check the parking situation as many places in Denver don't have a parking lot. I was in luck as Steve has his own parking lot. I arrived after a short drive and reviewed the large overhead menu. We ordered a chili cheese dog (Dallas Dog), bratwurst with sauerkraut and mustard, mustard dog, a plain dog, a bag of chips and three sodas. After a short wait the food was ready. I ate my chili dog in three bites and I figured that it would be bigger for $5. We intended this to be a snack as it was a late lunch and a snack it was. The dogs were good but undersized for the money. I'm spoiled by having an amazing Hot Dog shop close by with huge portions (but expensive). The food was good and filled the need for the moment. Three stars!

Andy P.

Yelp
Always the same. Great. Our go to hot dog spot!! It's a destination walk for us. And our dog is welcome. Water and treats provided. The food is consistent. Service always friendly!

Gary S.

Yelp
This guy doesn't know jack about hot dogs or tortillas. He uses a fake/cheap waxy tortilla for his chimi dog. He also puts red onion, instead of white onion on his Chicago dog. If you claim you know, you better f'g know. He doesn't know!
google avatar

Cece S.

Yelp
For what it is, this place is pretty solid. While the menu is absolutely gigantic, I stuck with a very traditional dog - hot dog with spicy mustard, sauerkraut, and grilled onions. Great snap on the dog. The only thing I didn't like were the grilled onions. They were cut too large and still pretty raw. Next time, I'll try something a little more adventurous. I'm glad to have this great place nearby when the craving for a hot dog hits!
google avatar

Jackson B.

Yelp
If you're on the go and need something fast.. come to Steve's. We got all our food a Memphis dog, two grilled cheeses, and sweet potato tots in under 10 minutes. When you walk in, you can tell that the food is going to be good just by the ambience of the building, how the menus take up half of the wall above you, and the smell that fills the inside of the restaurant. The combination of bbq sauce, red onions, and cole slaw on the Memphis Dog was excellent it really hit the spot for an "on-the-go" type of food. You can't go wrong with a grilled cheese.. so we got two of those as well and they were just like you'd imagine melty cheese and a nice golden buttery outside. The sweet potato tots were such a nice combination to all the salty food we got. They were a little salty themselves yes, just a tiny bit; they had a more prominent sweet taste. Phenomenal spot! Would definitely come back.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
One of the best hot dogs we've ever had! Cool and casual spot with great service, great food, and reasonable prices. They keep it clean and the indoor patio was a comfortable spot to eat. Going to this place made our day and we're super excited to go back soon! Thanks guys!

Yelp
Best hot dog in Denver. I come here every time I'm in DIA CRazy good. Menu has something for everyone

Yelp
Sammy is awesome! Yummiest fries ever, will definitely be coming back. Service was impeccable and everybody was so nice

Yelp
Steve's is a great place to take family and friends when in Denver. Food is delicious and the atmosphere is fun.

Yelp
The best hot dogs in town. The kosher classic was amazing! I don't get into the city as often but enjoy Steve's whenever I can get there.
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
My wife had a wonderful experience here with the owner. He was great to the girls, gave some good recommendations. The onion rings happened to be the star which says a lot because the dogs rock! I go with my home town favorite, Chicago. If you could get this right then you probably do everything else really well too. A really nice choice and one you want to come back to when you're treated with such hospitality.
google avatar

Yelp
Found these folks when Cerebral Brewing opened. Close by so, it was a perfect opportunity to give them a try. This is my 4th visit and every time I have had great service and tasty dogs. I love the variety and options for us veg heads. And knowing I am going to have a good experience each time I go in with people working there that seem to genuinely enjoy what they do makes it a favorite for me.
google avatar

Steven S H C.

Yelp
when you are at this part of towm, gotta have some hot dogs and beer to wash down. Steve even has burrito to go if you are in a hurry. however, you gotta get a pint of your favourite and sit down and enjoy all the decor and partake on 12 years of history Steve has to offer. didn't know he was married to Linda who is the daughter of Blinky the Clown who was my favorite Sat morning character on channel 2. so many options of hot dogs and other stuff and experience what Steve has to offer. Awesomeness! Free WiFi too.
google avatar

Nick P.

Yelp
What a cool place! It's not often you see a full on hot dog place and not just a cart! Steve's was awesome! The Chicago dog was good and so was the Chimi! I think I felt my arteries closing down a little but eh who needs those. Totally awesome post-brewery food!
google avatar

De B.

Yelp
As an out-of-towner, it's very clear why Steve's is such an institution. The hot dogs are clearly as much a labor of love as Steve's Snappin' Ale. You simply cannot go wrong stopping by for a bite. I'm in town every couple of months and always make it a point to have at least one meal here.

Yelp
Steve's Snappin' Dogs place reminds me of rootbeer stands we used to visit in the Midwest--charming, a little scrappy, and lots of yummy comfort food on the cheap. Made my way here with my six year old date yesterday for a midday hot dog and some french fries. This restaurant is in a converted gas station on Colfax (they have a big photo album of the renovation to check out while you wait for your food). I was surprised at just how extensive their menu is--they've got over 16 kinds of dogs, 15 different sides, burgers, and even breakfast burritos! And while I didn't partake this time, it's nice to know they have beer and wine (because what's better than a chilled glass of wine with an order of french fries?). My date ordered a class snappin' dog with just mustard and I got a bratwurst with spicy mustard and grilled onions. We chose to sit inside because it was a pretty hot day, but there was also plenty of seating on their screened in patio. My brat was really tasty and we went hard on the fries. For less than $15, this is a pretty screamin' lunch deal. I've had the pleasure of meeting Steve and he's a true gem as well. Love these classic Colfax businesses!

Yelp
Wish I could give it 10 stars! We love LOVE this place. Our 2 boys love coming here so much. We are usually fortunate to come when Steve is working, and our kids get so starstruck. They shout out, "Wow look it's Steve!" He typically always stops to make sure everything is perfect and makes our boys feel so special while he does. Great food, great staff, and always a crowd pleaser for our family!

Yelp
Stopped in here because I kept driving by and I had to check it out! Steve's dogs don't disappoint!! The dog had so much flavor and the bun was fresh! I can't wait to take my vegetarian wife here
