Stock & Barrel is an overall solid restaurant in the Knoxville downtown area and is worth going for mostly the bourbon selection and the food as a secondary highlight.
We arrived around 6:30PM on a sunday night and were told a 15 minute wait, very convenient to go walk around Downtown quickly. The inside is warmly lit with yellow lights with the decor using dominantly darker woods to really sell the burger bar & hardier liquors vibe, yet they still manage to keep it clean. Our waiter for the night's name is Sam, he was very attentive. Refilled waters quickly, suggested great bourbons and informative on them too.
The bourbon flights are worth it no matter what, if you build it or choose one of their premade ones it's good. The restaurant seems to know their stuff and have a great selection, with bourbons that have massive arrays of flavor notes whether smokey, fruity, woody etc. Please get one.
Everything that we ordered food wise had huge portions to it, you can easily feed a family of 4 for sub $100 here. Maybe $70 or less without bourbon if you don't feel like drinking.
We ordered two starters: Crispy Shrooms & Spicy Crab Dip. The mushrooms were really boring, the Honey Mustard Drizzle didn't really add any flavors to the mushroom and tasted primarily of honey and barely, if any, mustard flavor. The Spicy Crab dip has a very mild spice to it but lacked the quantity of crab but was very cheesy and creamy, more of a cheese dip than crab. I'd say both are not worth ordering again.
We ordered and shared two burgers: The Steakhouse Burger with Duck Fat Fries & The Bison Burger with Onion Rings. First of all the duck fat fries are not worth the price for its own plate or an upgrade(+$3 charge), the fries aren't fried in duck fat but only tossed in it with parm & scallions. The aroma of the duck doesn't really ring through and just makes the fries oily and soggy. The "Garlic Aioli" on the side of it doesn't have as rich of a garlic flavor to make it worth it either. The Onion Rings are good though, especially without an extra charge, crispy and the onions are really sweet and don't fall out of the ring. The Bison Burger, ordered medium, came out medium well, a little dry but the boursin cheese and ranch really helped it out. The burger has the nice creamy tang from the cheese and ranch, backed by the meaty mushrooms and an interesting grassy flavor in the bison. The crispy onions were soggy because they sat in sauce, adding soft batter, would've preferred grilled onions. That same issue was less present in the Steakhouse Burger. The steakhouse burger was cooked to a proper medium and the meat was really juicy. The crispy onions actually held their crisp better and the A1 sauce adds a tangy acidity, for my taste slightly too much A1 but it is certainly interesting. The buns are actually softer and fluffier than they appear in photos and do well to keep the burger stable. Definitely willing to try other burgers because some flavors are interesting.
Overall, I would go again but probably for the atmosphere and bourbon, the burgers are pretty good, starters felt like a ripoff, and the sides are actually decent. Stock & Barrel is worth going again to try some interesting toppings on burgers, but it's mostly the drinks.
