"The new restaurant and catering company coming to NW Broadway will be far more than a spot for lunch. Starting this spring, Portlanders at risk of homelessness can get paid to learn food service skills through Stone Soup, a four-month training program centered around a lunch counter and event hall. Modeled after the FareStart program in Seattle, Stone Soup accepts referrals from organizations like JOIN and Street Roots, helping participants find career specializations like bartending, back-of-house, and front-of-house service." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

A delight from beginning to end. Friendly staff, delicious soups, salads and sandwiches, a full spirits, beer and wine list and an owner who can mix up a mean cocktail... and on top of all of that, a non-profit organization whose mission it is to end homelessness in Portland, starting by putting great people through a 12-week training program for hospitality job placement. You can't ask for more. A tasty lunch counter just by itself, then top if off with a great cause... I'd come in for lunch every day!

I can't say enough about this organization. What they do, who they are, and the food they serve are all why I support them wholeheartedly. Eat well, feel good, and do better for Portland. Could you ask for more? Thank you Stone Soup for doing what you do in our community. I'll see you soon~ Heather

Google
A wonderful restaurant with a mission. Delightful, fresh, original food prepared by people experiencing barriers to employment to help them achieve self reliance in the food service industry. Stone Soup is organized as a 501c3 and is truly dedicated to their mission. I experienced the Auto-Bohu Mi Steamed Buns and the Gazpacho soup (melon today). I must say that I haven’t experienced better food anywhere. The presentation was beautiful and the freshness was off the chart. You can’t go wrong for lunch here. It’s an easy walk from on the fringe of the Pearl District.

Stone Soup is a beautiful hidden treasure. Their food is delicious and healthy. The staff are kind, patient, and bright. There is keto, vegan, and GF menu items. All staff are from corrections and are working to gain a great skill set in the kitchen and at the register. To top it off, all their chairs are donated and on the back of each is a plaque stating where it was donated from. How cherishing!!

Google
The rating is moreso for the idea and intent behind this place than the food, which is okay. Learning a new trade can be very daunting for a lot of people, but Stone Soup works with a couple local organizations to make it a lot easier for those in need to pick up new skills in the food and restaurant industry. More power to them.

Yelp
Awesome chili. The staff was kind and considerate of me having a cold and recommended the corn bread and beef chili.

Yelp
Today Portland has a shortage of restaurant workers; front of house and back of house. Stone Soup is a cafe training up homeless individuals for the restaurant industry. It's a 4 week program followed by an internship at local restaurants and groceries. They have attracted collaborators from some of Portland's top restaurants. The menu, lunch now, and a few days open for happy hour, is simple, and the quality is high: soups, salads, sandwiches, and dessert. I had the gazpacho and the Greek salad. The gazpacho was blendered to smooth, lightly spiced and accompanied good quality Grand Central toasted bread. The Greek salad had peak Summer tomatoes, arugula, crunchy cucumbers and chunk feta. The restaurant is counter service, and diners collect their own utensils and iced lemon water. Stone Soup is in the old Gilt space, which was dark and home to the famous Portlandia Colin the Chicken. Now it's light, with natural fir floors, maple tabletops, a bar, windows all around, and WiFi. They can do private dinners and cater too. Did I say that the food is very reasonably priced, and that the entire project is a nonprofit? Stone Soup is a beautiful classic story found in many cultures. And it's a restaurant with a cause.

Yelp
I fell in love with the idea of Stone Soup when KGW was doing a weekly news piece on them so I had to go check them out in person. Everything about Stone Soup is delightful! The restaurant is spacious and bright with an eclectic mix of chairs with plaques on it from the Portland restaurant that sponsored the chairs. The staff s attentive and friendly. Craig is usually at the front counter taking orders and always willing to share the story of Stone Soup. The support and collaboration from other Portland restaurants is heartwarming. And the food is absolutely fabulous!! Stone Soup is closed to the public for 3 months due to COVID-19 - during this time they are providing meals to 500 unhoused men and women with the help of other local partner restaurants. I look forward to Stone Soup re-opening to the public and the time that I can enjoy another meal there. They also offer private events and one of these days I would love to host one! In the meantime I plan on supporting them financially both in direct monetary contribution and in choosing them as my Amazon smile recipient! Yelp
I'm in the middle of a bowl of curry squash soup and veggie flatbread and it's so delicious I had to stop mid-way to post... the flavors are complex and inventive. I'm in heaven. The space is open and airy - would be great for groups or families, lunch meetings etc. The staff is super friendly and attentive. 100% will be here again (tomorrow?) and will bring friends.

Yelp
I love the concept behind Stone Soup and the shared goal to help homeless individuals stand on their own two feet while solving a restaurant need as well. The food is well prepared and consistent. The "NY penicilin" - chicken soup was flavorful and satisfying. Keep up the great work!

Yelp
The people were very nice but The chicken soup tastes fishy. The borsch was very mediocre.

Yelp
What an incredible business and group of people. Truly what Portland is about: community, food and giving back. Every chef is a hard working soul who loves what they do. You couldn't ask for better ingredients for your food.

Yelp
Just had a really great lunch (to-go) from Stone Soup. I ordered a cup of New York Penicillin, their take on chicken noodle, and a small not-so-simple-salad with vinaigrette dressing - you also have the option of ranch. It was a filling and healthy $8 meal. I liked that the soup had lots of herbs in it, and the salad was soooo good, much better than lunches I usually make at the salad bar. The staff was lovely as well!

Yelp
Perfect culmination of food, service and mission. We had a corporate dinner here that was outstanding. Craig and his staff are very professional and create flavorful dishes for a great cause, as well as far more affordable than any other private dining option downtown.

Yelp
This place is SO GOOD! Of course I support their mission, but the food is actually quite exceptional. I had soup and a salad and they were both amazing. Very affordably priced, clean and beautiful interior--highly recommended! Lots of vegetarian options and a menu that changes seasonally. This is going to be a regular lunch spot for me from now on.
