"The matcha-obsessed across SF breathed a collective sigh of relief when Stonemill Matcha returned after a brief hiatus. The Japanese cafe in the Mission is a consistently line-worthy standby for matcha in all its forms—yes, the Kermit-green lattes with foamy edges are smooth, slightly sweet, and bar-setting, but you’re also here for a slice of matcha cream pie that could single-handedly convince someone to move to the city (or at least extend their lease)." - julia chen 1, patrick wong
"Whenever lunchtime rolls around and the closest thing we have to a proper meal is half a box of Wheat Thins, we beeline to Stonemill Matcha. The Japanese cafe is home to chicken katsu with silky, gravy-like curry we could write endless love haikus about. And their peaceful space, filled with an arboretum’s worth of plants and light wood accents, is ideal for turning your lunch hour into two hours. Anything involving their golden-brown katsu is a winning order, along with their fantastic baked goods, like matcha cream pie and black sesame cream puffs." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez
"When lunchtime rolls around and the closest thing you have to a proper meal is half a box of Wheat Thins, you’re going to need a backup plan. Luckily, Stonemill Matcha—and their incredible chicken katsu curry, which we could write endless love letters about—is pretty close by. Grab an iced matcha latte and something with their crisp golden-brown katsu, whether it’s the curry plate with rice or the pork katsu sandwich, plus some straight-up decadent matcha cream pie for dessert." - julia chen 1
"This Japanese lunch spot in the Mission is known for their eponymous matcha drinks and pastries, but that’s not all they excel at. The katsu sandwich, available both with chicken or pork, is a smash hit. Their housemade tonkatsu sauce is tart, just a little sweet, and complements the panko-breaded pork loin or chicken thigh perfectly. The sandwich also comes cut into three decently sized pieces, making it both extra filling and ideal to split with a trio." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez
"We constantly keep this minimalist Japanese cafe in the Mission in our lunch rotation for their excellent comfort dishes. There are pork katsu sandwiches, teishoku set meals with potato croquettes and miso soup, and, of course, a remarkable chicken katsu curry. The curry itself is flavorful and not too thick, while the meat is still juicy despite having been fried to a deep golden brown. It’s a hearty midday meal we’ll never say no to, especially when rounded out with a black sesame latte and a slice of matcha cream pie." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez
