For fans of a messy, delicious sandwich, their famous Jim Shoe sandwich would satisfy. This sandwich was loaded with meat and flavors, making it hard to finish without any parts falling out. The food came out quickly, and the place is cash-only.

Classic greasy spoon. Sunday afternoon needed some grease and the Jim shoe is my fav. The male who was in line before me described it perfectly. He said, "it's disgusting but the most delicious thing to eat" I agreed!! Yummy on toast. I called in the order, had to wait 20 mins. Frfr. 20 mims on stony is a life time. Got home the order is wrong and sloppy... ok you get the idea. The cashier called me MaMa???He did it last time I was here. Who else called Mama? Ok so, I had heartburn, belching, and wondering why the fries were so under cooked. Thanks but my stomach hurts. Maybe next time....

Food...well it is what it is, and if you know...well you know. Open 24/7, breakfast, hangover or whatever. It gets you right. Be careful at night if there isn't any traffic.

Went for the gymshoe sandwich... Which was worth the drive.. And didn't disappoint....I saw advertisement on FB and stopped bye to try one.... Delicious

40 years of my life were wasted not having a Jim Shoe! This was life changing 🙌 it has the sweet savory meats with the hot heat of the peppers and giardiniera. The Perfect arrangement for a sandwich.

Stony Sub is a good spot for a quick and filling meal. Their sandwiches are big, tasty, and reasonably priced, with plenty of options to choose from. Service is usually fast, though the place can feel a bit crowded at times. A solid choice if you’re in the area and want something satisfying.

This place is great first of all because it’s 24 hours! It’s always clean in the lobby(even with the winter weather 👍🏾) The Italian Beef and the Jim Shoo is delicious and tasty, the portions are very generous every single time!

You get exactly what you pay for. The food is your typical Chicago food, from wings, subs, and everything in between. Please make sure you bring cash cuz I wouldn't trust the ATM. Also there's no seating to eat inside. It's solely takeout...

It was great been going there for years, went yesterday Fries and chicken were soggy the sandwich taste the same but a lot less meat on there

I had this place a couple of years ago and all I can remember is the amount of grease on the sandwich granted I did get the Jim shoe sandwich. But honestly it did taste good it just had a lot going on. Every time I pass by though they do have people in the restaurant ordering so people must like this type of food it just wasn't for me!

Fried catfish fillets were fresh lightly breaded so crispy. Add lemon pepper and tartar sauce.

This restaurant has truly fallen off. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with bacon, sausage, egg and cheese. The regular Mexican guy with the big eyes charged me 15 dollars. Before I left out the bag felt very light, so I turned toward the window and said, " this better be worth 15 dollars." He looked puzzled and waved his hand. The sandwich was terrible in size and taste. I guess he put the bacon in old grease because that's all I could taste. This is by far a restaurant that needs to be removed off of Stony Island. So disappointed and sick of the restaurant workers charging an arm and a leg for poor quality food.

Solid .7 spot if you want a decent sandwich. Some days are good and some days not, the waits are always long and never consistent

Was doing some research on Chicago's best sandwiches on my visit and the Jim Shoe at Stony Sub came up so I decided to give it a try. I was expecting it to be unique and decent, but it was actually super flavor. The sub roll was on point, soft, crusty, amazing. And the toppings, which sound like the kitchen sink, actually all worked together perfectly. I was kinda blown away by how much it exceeded my expectations. Definitely an underrated piece of Chicago food culture!

I have heard about this place and drove past it thousands of times. This restaurant was also recommended by someone in a (Chi Town foodies) a Chicago based food group on Facebook! It was delicious! Hood Alert: This place isn't in a horrible area but it does get rough a tad. It has been a few shootings in the area around this establishment. Personally I would only go before dark! Cause the freaks come out at night! Also be street wise and don't use the ATM! This place only accepts cash! So bring cash so you don't have to pull out your card to use the ATM I went in today about 10:30am. I thought I would beat the crowd...Nope!!! Loll! It was like five people in line. The place was clean. No seats or counter. It's a to go spot hood spot. They have the typical to go foods. Gyros, polishes, hot dogs, fish, pizza puffs etc! They are behind plexiglass! I told you it can get rough on Stony Island! I ordered a King Size Gym Shoe sandwich. It's about a 10-12 inch sandwich that comes on a sub roll stuffed with Gyro Meat, Corned Beef, Roast Beef, cheese, hot and sweet peppers, mayonnaise, onions, lettuce, tomato and gyro sauce aka tzatziki sauce. The sandwich also came with fries and a pop. My total was about $16.50. I busted it down with my car with my mom and my son! The fries were hot and fresh. This was my first Gym Sandwich I have ever had and it lived up to the hype. The meats were chopped up and melted in well together. The cheese just melted into the bread and meats, then you had the heat of the hot peppers and the nice tang of the gyro sauce! It was a messy sandwich that will send your blood pressure and cholesterol through the roof! It was delicious though lolll!! I recommend them highly! Take a walk on the wild side on Stony Island!!

I have never had anything bad from them, I just don't like my condiments on the bottom half of my sandwiches. It makes the bread fall and I can't bite my sandwich. They have the best wings ever!

I finally tried their Gym Shoe sandwich. A sandwich I've been curious about for a very long time. Stony Sub is cash only place that is open 24 hours a day. They don't have tables inside so you gots to take it ta go. It's also very clean inside and the guys taking your order was full of energy. Their Gym Shoe sandwich was a little over $10 and came with fries and a drink. It little on the pricey side, but once you're done eating it, you would say it's absolutely worth every penny. The sandwich was gigantic and packed with gyro meat, with chopped roast beef and corned beef. It's then topped with lettuce, tomatoes, tzatziki sauce, mayo and mustard, cheese, onions and sweet & hot peppers. Yes, they put a lot in there, and the reasoning for their high price. The sandwich itself was very tasty. I feel like the gyro meat overpowers the entire sandwich with its saltiness, but overall a very filling sandwich. Wouldn't mind ordering this again, next time I'm in the area. The only thing that makes it difficult, is Taurus Flavors is literally down the street. I might just visit both each time!

What I ordered? The gym shoe How was it? Very good. Although it would somehow taste better around 4am after a night of bar hopping or partying on the weekends. What are the hours? Open 24 hours so that's a good thing Was it expensive? It was adequately priced Would u recommend it to others? Sure if they want a sandwich of that caliber What's in a gym shoe sandwich? This version comes with Gyros roast beef corned beef all chopped with cheese gyros sauce mayo lettuce and tomato. Keep in mind that other local submarine establishments would probably use different condiments or toppings. Also the bread holds the sandwich well. Better than it looked. So why the 4 stars? Because it's take out only. With a sandwich that messy it's either wait until you're home to eat it or eat it in the car. Then head to the self service car wash to vacuum the mess you made. Overall damn good sandwich. Sandwich on steroids

Tried this spot for the first time recently and I must say...the Gymshoe- chef's kiss! I'm rarely out south, but this was recommended to me so I agreed to take the drive out there and I must say...it was well worth the drive and money for this sub! Honestly - better than Portillo's Italian beef! I'm super picky & this exceeded my expectations for sure!

This place has been COVID safe since before COVID was a thing, on account of how they use those little revolving doors to give you your food. The food is delicious, and well-priced. I recommend the 'jim shoe' sandwich and the fries. Somehow, the fries taste like chicken wings. I would have posted a photo of the sandwich, had it not been too tasty to wait to eat immediately.

Strictly based on Yelp reviews, I finally tried the Chicago "Gym Shoe." It's a sandwich with corned beef, roast beef, gyro meat, cheese, green peppers, hot peppers, mayo, tzatziki sauce, lettuce, and tomatoes all on a toasted roll. I've heard of it and never been interested but I must say it was great! Total guilty pleasure. I felt guilty eating it but I couldn't stop. From the outside the building is unsightly and despite seeing it for years, never thought I would ever step foot inside. I was however pleasantly surprised when I did step inside. It was clean and well kept. The numerous menu items are overwhelming but there are no guilty pleasure items they don't offer. They have it all. Enter at your own risk and leave all dietary restrictions at the door.

Oh yes! I've worked cash only retail Establishments before.i must say, If the owners are not there to watch, sometimes orders are filled and no receipts are given and it was NOT rung up on the register... humm!where's the $ ?? Owners can't get ahead because of employee theft! Cameras in the wrong position maybe!! JUST SAYING,I could be wrong. JUST GIVE EVERYONE A RECEIPT!!

Ordered 10 wing tonight about 7:15, was told 20 minutes for pickup by phone, my husband picked them up about 7:40. Got the wings home only had 9, paid for ten so I called to let them know, also my husband had asked 4 times for a receipt and the cashier man did not want to give it right away he did finally. I called about the shorted wing and a Hispanic man answered the phone and I told him about the missing wing and the problem with the receipt, he began yelling and said he gave the receipt and to come back for the other wing. Well I told him we were about to eat and could not come back tonight he kept yelling and hung the phone up on me. I was very angry and called back and said we are customers and we are the reason you are in business, I told him I would contact social media and he said go ahead it's only your opinion. WOW!!! We have been supporting thier business for years and now they have lost us... Stony Sub was great but one worker has killed it for me!! CUSTOMER SERVICE IS EVERYTHING!!! One star for customer service, desent food but who pays to be insulted!!?

Since you have to take the food with you, by the time we were able to eat it all the bread was soggy and I thought the fries were going to fall out of the bottom of the container there was so much grease. Nonetheless, the food was fantastic! Hands down - the BEST Italian beef I have ever had. We come to Chicago often for Bears games and we may have to add this gem to our list of places to go from now on. Be prepared: they only take cash, there is no place to sit and eat and you should be prepared to wait as it is often busy.

I ordered over the phone, the young lady who answered the phone talked very quick and I had ask her to several times to repeat herself. Otherwise, the Philly cheesesteak is good.

After having a conversation with a coworker about the Jim shoe and what it is and how it's made, and it's origins I decided to try it. And why not go to the place where everyone says it's best. So even though I don't live anywhere near this particular restaurant I took the journey here to try this sandwich I hear so much about. And I made an excellent choice. Upon entering this restaurant I'm greeted by a friendly woman, who took the time to actually talk a bit with me before taking my order. And never got irritated at my many questions, which I had quite a few. She even gave suggestions on what is good as well as what not to bother with. Which I think was refreshing because most times they just ring you up for whatever you ask for, knowing once you receive it you won't be satisfied. After a short wait she let me know my order was ready. I took my order and left, eating my fries as I traveled to my destination. I consider myself a french fries conosuer, and these did not disappoint. And as one other reviewer stated their mild sauce tasted just right. Once I reached my location I opened my sandwich ready to take a bite, let me tell you this sandwich I very large, and they don't skimp on the meat either. It comes with roast beef, gyro meat, and corned beef, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, mayo, tzaziki sauce, and cheese. I skipped the mayo and sweet peppers, and got everything else. I am not sure who thought to put this combination of meats together, nor why they work so well together. But I am glad that I did try, if your wondering if you should try it, I say go for it.

The fries that fell through the bag...I can forgive that.(And yes they did offer to replace them). Ordering the wrong sandwich as a first time customer and they not really giving a sh*t...I can let that go. (After all, it was my mistake, although my "steak" sandwich like looks anything but) But the lady answering the phone, who hung up on me for asking to speak to a manager/supervisor...nah. Never going there again. Can I speak to a manger? No. Can I speak to a supervisor? No -click- I call back and no apology. Very lackadaisical about the whole thing. Are...you...serious? When I tell you that the lady who answered the phone was the rudest person I've ever encountered in any industry, that's what I mean. These places treat us like crap because we let them. We give them our money, in our neighborhood and you're rude to me?! Nope. I'm good. I work too hard for my money to spend it on a sub shop that doesn't care about their customers. You don't employ hood chicks to work in a position where they have to communicate with the public if they have funky attitudes. Take your money somewhere else! I have told everyone I possibly can (mind you this took place about three hours ago) not to come here.

I watched a video on YouTube and my mouth was watering as they showed their infamous Jim Shoe sub sandwich. Let me tell you it was just as good in person. Made freshly in front of me , the Jim shoe was the perfect meat lovers combo. Great service. Great price. Great portion. If you're looking for a gem on the south shore side of Chicago - this is the place.

Visiting from out of town, we researched food to eat in Chicago. The gym shoe was a sandwich that came recommended and the Stony Sub was the top recommendation we received. The gym shoe is absolutely amazing. The shop is a bit out of the way from the loop, but the trek to it the shop is worth the food. The shop itself is clean and only accepts cash. We took the train and then a lyft back. It was worth the trek.

Im rarely in this area but stopped here after attending a club in the area. They have very good Italian beef and wings.Too bad they are so far away from me but maybe thats a good thing.

Cook handled food without gloves and did not wear his mask and no refund was given regardless of poor food handling. This is a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Cashier did not properly wear her mask either and was very rude and unpleasant! THE GHETTO. Would not recommend.

I love this place too I used to get breakfast. When I worked nights. Also at lunchtime the place would be crowded. Have not been for awhile. Hope they have the same staff. Very nice.

HORRIBLE SERVICE. Never coming back again. I saw a mouse run across the kitchen floor and a roach in the waiting area. I waited outside for my food and the cashier had an attitude when I came back in minutes after it should have been ready, asking if it was ready. I've been there many times but that was the last.

I've been to stony subs maybe twice since I've been living over east. And, that's been years! I would say they give large portions of food, and the prices are worth it. But, I'm not a fan of their Italian beef.

I had their signature sandwich, the Jim Shoe and it was pretty decent. I might consider going back for another. What gives this place such low marks is its' location in the 'hood. You know, sketchy neighborhood, business conducted behind bullet proof glass, slow service, mouthy, rude cashier, questionable cleanliness. Get the picture yet?

Worst hot dog in Chicago not a Chicago style dog far from it ... gyro was ok at best plenty of meat could have used an extra pita and made two which was good ... cheese sticks soggy fries ok with mild sauce on them

Horrible service I went in, orders an Italian beef with fries. My food was ready within 2 mins. However food was not fresh no bread was cold meat was room temperature and fresh didn't have a lick of steam coming off them, owner gets upset because I asked for my $13.50 back or for my food to be remade fresh. Due to me bn pregnant and also when inorder food from a restaurant I expected it be freshly made. He get mad and tells me that he will remake my food but don't come back. So I kindly told him.thats fine and to give me my money back because I no longer. Want the food. Very rude and bad customer service

Yasssssssss!!! The "Jimshoe" is the BOMB!! I had so many doubts about this sandwich due to a bad first time experience at ANOTHER restaurant, and it was disgusting. But the sandwich exceeded my expectations. The blend of meats were perfect, the bread was fresh and grilled perfect. I did ask for light mayo, but that's just my preference anytime I have mayo on a sandwich. The place was clean, quiet, neat, and the service was fast and friendly. We will DEFINITELY be going back often!!!

Everything I've ordered is good here and freshly made to ordered. The gym shoe is yummy!!! The whole chicken wings are good, I like them fried hard. I always order a gyro plate, that's so huge, I share with my family of 4. When funds are low, a hamburger, fry and drink is less than $5. You can see right through, to the kitchen which is clean. I love the lady there, that takes the order mostly every time I call. The lady that calls every one, "baby" and says, "thank you, baby."

Food was good but the lady taking orders, OMG! She was so rude, not only with me but the rest of the customers, of your job suck, leave it. But you have no right to talk to people the way you spoke to me. NOT ACCEPTABLE! Get a life!

There's only one real reason to come to Stony Sub, and that's the Jim Shoe Sandwich. I, too, had heard whispering of this audacious sandwich, which dared to challenge the limitations of Chicago sandwichness as we know it. But sadly, for too long I wimped out; always saying it was "too far" or the merit of such a trip being "too unknown." Well friends. I am proud to state that I DID make that triumphant march to Stony Sub, and yes: the legends that have spake the name JIM SHOE are true! The sandwich is a meat-lovers dream, with enough giardinera peppers to satisfy heat seekers and gives each bite a satisfactory crunch. The bread--I'm guessing a Turano italian?--is good in that it helps soak up the juices but doesn't fight the flavor of your meat party. TIPS: there is no parking here, so you have to do street. Also, at night you have some guys trying to sell bootleg DVDs--pay them no mind and don't let them keep you from enjoying your Chicago legendary sub. OH! And you're going to want to do takeout here, as there just a couple of chairs and no tables.

I have seen this place for years but I never thought about walking in and taking a look at their menu because it just seemed like a hole in the wall...so why bother!!! Well boy o boy I was wrong...you know the saying don't judge a book by its cover, well I should have listened. The place was clean and had a pleasant smell in the air and that doesn't happen often when you go into some of these greasy spoons. This is also a CASH ONLY restaurant so leave your credit and debit cards at home because your plastic won't work there. They are open 24 hours a day and had a steady of people coming into the restaurant but they still seem to keep up with the orders...That's a plus in my mind! They had a variety of Choices from Breakfast to Dinner and everything in between. Breakfast is served 6am to 6pm at very low prices. I don't know to many places where you can get an omelet for under 6 dollars and it still comes with hash browns. I will most definitely come back and try it out! The young lady behind the counter that took the order was smiling the entire time...another Plus in my book. I had the Jim Shoe sandwich which is jammed packed with meat(gyro, Italian beef and corn beef) it also had lettuce, tomatoes, onions, hot peppers, sweet peppers, mayo and gyro sauce and cheese. Yes it is a heart attract on a bun but I enjoyed every bite and it's not like I am going to eat it everyday...lol It was a moment of splurging!!! The price was pretty reasonable as well...I want to say about $7.81 and it came with fries and a pop!!! I have to say too that I loved the mild sauce on my fries it didn't have that funny after taste that some places have when you get the mild sauce. This place is a hidden gem that I was looking at for years but never took the time to explore...Everything was fresh and truly changed what I use to think of this place. If my next visit is as good as this one...They will have a loyal customer for life. So if you are in that neck of the woods and you don't want to break your budget on buying something to eat and you want something good and fresh you have to stop at Stony Sub...I don't think you will be disappointed...I know I wasn't!!! Enjoy!!!

This was the third time that I've visited this place and the last time. My husband and I had to wait 5 minutes to even place because the female who takes the orders and the cook were having a bad argument. When we finally placed our order we watched several people come in and place an order get their order and leave. After a half hour later we were still waiting on two gyros plates that for some reason today cost $27. My husband approached the order window and inquired about our order. He was told our order was coming up. The cook began cooking out order. My husband asked for a refund and expanded how long we had waited. The cook began yelling at us and said we could not come their anymore. This is OUTRAGEOUS!! Well he don't have to worry about that!

If you never been here then this is the place to order there specialty called the gym shoe. Yes the name is right !!! It's not stinky , it's delicious. It's a hot sub with roast beef, corned beef, and gyros!!! OMG IT IS SO GOOD UR GONNA WANNA SMACK THE PERSON WHO IS EVER SITTING BY YOU!! I never would have thought that these meats would marry well together but they do, and the price is on point . Make this a place you will try at least once and you will be a customer for life !!

Not for the faint of heart. The meat options are par-for-the-course but the team at Stony Sub has taken hot sandwiches to the next frontier. I am of course referring to the enigmatic gym-shoe. I rode my bike 17 miles, in the rain, just to eat this mythical meat-pile. Also know there wasn't a good place to really lock up my bike. But now to the sandwich. The legends are true, folks. My flavor buds exploded in exaltation within the first bite. The flavors swim together rhythmically like Louis Armstrong headed into a crescendo. I ate the entire king size sandwich. That's right, will you accept that challenge? Also, I want to mention that everyone in he restaurant was friendly and eager to chat about Southside attractions. Be prepared to make a mess eating your gym-shoe because there are no tables at Stony's. Also, they offer an array of fry flavoring which I haven't seen done before, so kudos for going the extra mile, Stony's.

Don't get a hot dog or polish here. HORRIBLE. Mine were dried out. The dogs were wrinkled like they'd been cooked for days and reheated. I won't b returning.

Usually come here and my food is good. They were a little busy today and the cook forgot to make my pizza puff and then once I reminded him to make it he didn't finish cooking it. No lemon pepper added to my fries even tho I asked for that as well. Smh made me never want to come back. I guess I'll enjoy my can pop since that's the only thing that was correct in my order. Drove out of my way to go to stony sub for this and it's the most simple thing on the menu. Also for the two meals and two drinks I ordered I received 1 straw.

The food is good HOWEVER the girl that answers the phone has the most nastiest unprofessional attitude possible. This was displayed 11/3/2018 @7pm. The sad part is the manager more then likely will not do anything about her attitude. You don't treat your customers rudely. When placing an order you should be given a total and not hung up on. Since they don't take credit cards it would be nice to know the total in case you need to stop at the bank before going in. Just ignorant she was!

Can't go wrong with the jim shoe. Great fries as well. Good prices and friendly service the times that I have gone.

WHO OWNS THIS ESTABLISHMENT?! The light skin lady at the counter, with bushy eyebrows taking the orders is ATROCIOUS! No customer service skills, Extremely rude! I left without getting any food, that's how bad the service was. She has GOTTA be the owner, or related to them. Even the cook shook his head in disbelief

Stony Sub is so good! I cannot believe that this place has been around for so many years and still providing good food. It might not be the most healthiest choice but it's worth the splurge here and there. I will recommend this place to other people definitely!
