Where to Eat While Visiting Lake Michigan’s Beach Towns

"Resting in the heart of the tranquil Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the area’s first locally conscious and seasonal restaurant. When Stop 50 first opened in the summer of 2006 it was a unique thing for a local restaurant to take advantage of the local bounty. Stop 50 does so in the form of Naples inspired wood-fired pizza cooked in an open kitchen oven using fresh in-season ingredients. Non-pizza favorites include the wood-roasted sausage stuffed banana peppers an s'mores roasted over the wood fire." - Naomi Waxman, Titus Ruscitti

Napolitano crust!! Delicious pizza toppings! Their house salad and simple lemon oregano herb dressing is delicious! Everything we ordered on four different occasions were just scrumptious!

This place was good. I enjoyed the pizza. One issue, small issue, was we went here while staying in the neighborhood the first night we were there and the place was too busy for us to even have hopes of waiting for a table to open. My son stopped in to ask what the wait time was and the server was very rude. Now, this was the sunday following July 4th, so I understand they were bust and a wild holiday weekend. Therefore, we went on a weekday, and it was very quick to get in, get a table, and our food. Overall decent.

Google
The pizzas are very good, thin crispy crust and sweet tomato sauce. They add olive oil & garlic to most of the pizzas which makes them even more delicious. Gelato is a bit pricey, but very good. Our server was nice, as was the owner of the store.

Google
We found this place on accident. They have awesome pizza. We had their seasonal peach pizza special and a sausage one. They were delicious. They have a good beer selection, and their gelato was also good. The service was friendly. There was a bit of a wait but totally worth it. It is handmade, after all.

Google
Our family had a really nice experience here for dinner. I thought my GPS was lying to me, but you just need to trust it. We had the appetizer sampler, caprese salad, sausage pizza, and the daily special pizza. Oh and also two s'mores for dessert! All ,of the food was great and fed the five of us. My favorite was the caprese salad. The tomatoes and mozz were so fresh. Our waitress Riley was very nice and provided excellent service. They do charge a service fee for using a credit card. As a small business owner, I can understand where they are coming from.

Google
This crust does not disappoint! Friendly staff. Rotating draft beer list. Always so good! The prosciutto was my fav this time. We sat outside and had our wee dog along and it was 🙂. Service was slower than usual... but it is Mother's Day and they were quite busy!

We were seated outdoors quickly upon arrival. However, after waiting for 20 minutes, we still had yet to have a server acknowledge we were there or even take a drink order. We decided to leave. Luckily, there was another pizza joint just 10 minutes down the road. So much better service, friendly waiting staff, and more pizza choices. Worked out for us but would never try here again.

Google
We had an excellent experience last weekend with Riley. We were visiting from out of town and looking for a delicious meal and this place delivered and beyond. Walking in, you can’t help but notice the fresh herbs growing in the planters out front. The patio area was welcoming and comfortable, but we chose to sit inside to get a view of the pizza oven at work. Riley was great and suggested the season special - an heirloom tomato pizza with basil, walnuts, and light dressing. She made a great suggestion and swap for me and it was even better than I thought. This was a great place for date night like us, or to come with your family. We will definitely be returning!

Yelp
This was such a delightful stop for dinner!! The food was delicious, service was amazing, and the restaurant was so charming. We loved our dinner & will definitely be back! Oh & order the gelato!

Yelp
I've had better-wood-fired pizza, overall, but if you are in the region - I do think Stop 50 pizza is worth the stop. We got the seasonal pie with sausage and it was a very well-thought-out combo - lots of fresh veggies and yummy garlic sauce. Service was very friendly and thoughtful - you can tell people enjoy working there. There are both indoor and outdoor seating options and can accommodate large parties.

Greg S.

Yelp
We enjoyed our dinner here, I thought Stop 50's wood-fired oven pizza was good although not exceptional. After starting with a tasty firecracker appetizer, we shared margherita, sausage, and prosciutto pizzas; the prosciutto was my favorite, I thought the combination of prosciutto and pistachios worked well. The service was friendly and attentive. We arrived around 6pm on a Sunday and waited about 45 minutes for a table.

Yelp
The service was great. We thought Jake (heart eyes emoji) did a great job explaining the menu items. Wine prices were super reasonable and the food was yummy! We had a nice time

Yelp
Really enjoyed eating here, tucked away in a residential neighborhood. It was raining, so we couldn't sit outside and sat inside instead. The space is small, perhaps too small and loud to call it cozy, but we appreciated seeing the pizzas made in their woodfire oven. Our server was amazing, patient with our orders, and consistently checked in with us. Both our appetizers and the pizzas were delicious. We will definitely make the trek to eat there again.

Patrick R.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Pizza is perfect. Had the wild mushroom, sausage, and cheese pizzas. Also had the meatballs and garden salad. Everything was perfect. It is one of those restaurants where I would go and order different things each visit because sure I'm certain the whole menu would be good.

Jack S.

Yelp
I went here about 2 weeks ago. First they don't take reservations and when I got there I put my name in and had to wait 45 minutes for a table outside. Before we ordered our appetizers, a group of 4 came in with bulldogs and sat right next to us. After ordering, we had to sit there for 70 minutes waiting for our dinner while the dogs were snorting. Once the food came, it was good but not worth the wait. The service was fine but they should have more employees to help out the with the busy night.

Yelp
Stop 50 Wood Fires Pizzeria is by far the best hidden gem we've discovered on our many trips between Illinois and Michigan. They had both indoor and outdoor seating areas and with the sun shining (but cool for June) there were several folks enjoying the terrace. We chose to sit inside and I am glad we did because the decor was relaxing and we could watch them make our pizzas in the wood fire ovens. Our server was a pleasant young man (I feel horrible I forgot his name), who was able to offer suggestions and helped me change some thing up due to my dietary restrictions. We started our meal with The Mixed Greens Salad, which was simple yet super tasty. Fresh greens were tossed in a light, but flavorful vinaigrette, with just the right amount of thinly sliced red onion and finished with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. The portion was perfect for my husband and I to share. The wood fired pizzas do not disappoint! I had the seasonal selection which was their Prosciutto with a twist ~ prosciutto, pistachios, mozzarella, rosemary and asparagus. It was fresh and the asparagus was tender. My husband had the Sausage and he really enjoyed it. We finished our meal with their homemade Gelato. My husband had vanilla which was light and creamy. I had the chocolate which was rich and decadent. Overall our little side trip to Stop 50 Wood Fires Pizzeria, was worth the stop. We will definitely make Stop 50 a regular part of our trek between IL & MI in the future!

Yelp
I took my review down during the pandemic because they lashed out online at a customer. I decided to give them another chance yesterday. I'm so glad to be back because the food is outstanding. I'm not kidding. We start with the firecracker dip which is spicy marinara with goat cheese and fresh breadsticks from the oven. Outstanding! I absolutely loved it! As for pizza, I went with the procuttio and rosemary. One of my favorite pizzas ever. Nice and thin, crispy, and enough char. We also got a pepperoni pizza which was great too! As for the service, it was excellent! As I mentioned, they kind of went crazy during the pandemic, but it seems like that has passed. Our server was wonderful and helpful. Nice to get good service here! I highly recommend this place once again! They are a small business so I think the last couple of years were bad, but they seem to have come out stronger!

Yelp
We came to visit some friends in the Michiana Shores area for a long weekend and enjoyed Stop 50 twice! The first time we came was with our kids for lunch- the wait staff and host were all incredibly friendly and accommodating to our larger group. I appreciated that there was something for everyone on the menu (even my pickiest toddler enjoyed) and that all the ingredients were fresh and of quality. My favorite was the margarita pizza and the salad. We knew we had to enjoy again! We came back again on a busy Saturday evening and had to wait much longer for our food-- I think they only have one pizza oven, so just something to note if your planning on coming here on a busy evening. Will definitely be returning if we make it back to the area and would highly recommend to all!

S B.

Yelp
Stopped here on a long drive and I was pleasantly surprised. We enjoyed the wood fired pizza on the patio and it was delicious. We would eat here again!

Yelp
Of course I recommend Stop 50! I always get the same pizza (margherita) and it never disappoints! Owners are delightful and the staff is always helpful.

Yelp
Overpriced, very average and long wait. There is a charge for using a credit card. Disappointing. Won't return.

Yelp
Best wood fired pizza in the area. Staff and menu are fantastic. Try their specialty pizza of the day it's almost always a hit.
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely spot for pizza. A bit expensive but great service and clearly run by gooooood people. All local beers helps! Go!
google avatar

Yelp
The mounds of salad really blew me away. The pizza had a good sauce and just the right amount of crisp.

Yelp
Good Pizza - have only done take out, never eaten at the restaurant. Maybe one day will have the pleasure

Yelp
We stopped here on a recent trip to Michigan, and after reading some reviews, we were excited to try the pizza. Unfortunately, we were not overly impressed. We ordered the breadsticks first, and were surprised with how cold the sauce was. The bread was okay, but someone dry and hard. My wife is from Connecticut, so we are very big on brick oven pizza, but this one just didn't do it for us. Some people may like the style, but for me, it was just not doughy enough or a little over cooked. It just left it with a burnt taste and texture.that I didn't not enjoy. The waiter was great, and we enjoyed sitting out on the patio, so overall the experience was not bad, but unfortunately we just did not enjoy the food experience.

Yelp
The pizzas were so good! I'm used to New York pizza and it definitely felt like pizza from the NY and NJ area. We tried 4 different pizzas: the two seasonal pizzas (peach and prosciutto, heirloom tomatoes and blue cheese) plus the sausage and margarita pizza. All were great! Dough was soft with a bit of the fire roasted crunch. The pizza was not overwhelmed with sauce and the topping to bread ratio was on point! The staff were very friendly. You could tell the locals love this place given the rapport between customers and staff. Overall, I will be dreaming of their pizza while I'm in Chicago (I'm not a fan of deep dish).

Gerson D.

Yelp
Excellent flavor, love the crust, the selection of pizzas but above all the mixed green salad was amazing our whole party loved the presentation and the fresh produced!

ML M.

Yelp
coffee wasn't great but the Za made up for it!!! Very nice staff. The grilled veggies was only squash ... not sure that's for everybody!?

Margaret O.

Yelp
Time to add more toppings!! And maybe some new menu items! A few new salads would be nice! Also please add more toppings to the pizzas! Only had a few pistachios on our recent order! Most of the pizzas are dry! Dipping sauces? Thanks

Charles D.

Yelp
Surprisingly good pizza. Seated us pretty quickly despite having a large party at a peak lunch hour. Not too loud, family friendly atmosphere.

Yelp
My SIL recommended this for a dinner place with outdoor seating. It was really wonderful! Highly recommend after a day on the Lake.
google avatar

Yelp
What an unexpected gem! Great pizza with just the right amount of chew and crispy crust. Ordered the stuffed peppers with sausage, sausage pizza and for dessert.... (drumroll) beach banana boat. A fire roasted banana with cinnamon and brown sugar served with gelato. Yum!

Kate B.

Yelp
In town for a work project. Had the half salad and margherita pizza. The dough was perfect, nail was fresh and the sauce was on point. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Delicious food. Creative pizzas. Great service. Go eat there, you won't regret it. :)

Yelp
Ugh, Yelp reviewers are so frustrating, especially in the Midwest...especially when reviewing pizza. We drive from South Bend to Stop50 throughout summer and it's always a great experience. The owner is always there, smiling, helping and appears to really care for her staff/business which speaks volumes. Her staff is always chill, not overbearing and consistent. Now, I'm not the type of diner that needs to be babysat the entire time so, I suppose some people need way more. Tbh, I like to be left alone for the most part. Now, the pizza/food. First of all, if you're from the Midwest you're probably looking for a thick, greasy round sponge covered in sloppy sauce, sweaty meats and wet veggies from GFS coated with coagulated mozzarella from a giant plastic bag. That's fine, get into it, no judgement- but maybe Stop 50 isn't for you. I love this pizza. I don't like to feel heavy, full or uncomfortable after I eat. We can eat a whole pizza, firecracker app, finish with gelato and drive home comfortably and satisfied. I think the flavors and quality are outstanding. I think it shows that they care about what they do here. Stop 50 is less about quantity and more about quality- more places should be like this. Side note: Places shouldn't be reviewed negatively because they are busy or because the restaurant isn't able to seat you/turns you away. That's life. Guh, can't believed I yelped. Love you Stop 50

david b.

Yelp
We love this pizza place! Just be prepared to pay a bit higher than usual for a pizza. Quality is great prices are high. Still worth it because of their pizza and salad!
google avatar

Christine M.

Yelp
Interesting menu, pizzas were yummy. Very busy place, we arrived early so we didn't have to wait but a line formed pretty quickly afterwards. We sat outside and it was really nice. It was a bit noisy inside. The s'mores dessert and the campfire banana were both yummy!
google avatar

Leigh F.

Yelp
The friendliness of owner/staff is unsurpassed! Unique very thin pizza crust. Out of the standard-toppings. Note: there were uncivilized patrons present, when I was there. Harassing staff, hurling baseless negative comments. One person even made threats to file a (baseless) complaint with the health department! Do NOT believe any negative comments, posted. I am a retired police officer, these ARE the facts.

Krista L.

Yelp
Never had a bad meal here! This is our go to stop every time we're driving near it. Check their Facebook for updated hours because sometimes they close for family things.

Yelp
We arrived at about 4:45pm on a Saturday to several open tables. Don't be fooled!! There is an hour wait by about 5:10pm. So, if you have seating preferences (inside/outside) or a larger party than 3 or 4, call ahead for a reservation. Our party of 8 ordered a variety of items from the menu and all were pretty good. The meatballs were big and had a nice, Italian flavor with the homemade (not storebought frozen) texture. The garden salad was HUGE and fresh. The Firecracker may have been the hit and was surprisingly tasty and paired with the woodfired breadsticks. The order of "breadsticks" came with marinara that lacked much flavor. Pizza was eh. I expected better. We ordered the "sausage pizza" and it was just ok. The sausage was sliced paper thin, which was different, in a good way. You could get sausage in almost every bite, as opposed to typical chunk sausage. The crust was nothing exciting and pretty flimsy. Others in our party opted for the pizza special which was Peaches and Prosciutto. They all seemed to agree that it was an oddly good combination, but may not order again. Decent wine and beer selection, including local. I'm glad we went and tried for ourselves, but probably wouldn't go out of our way to return.
google avatar

Yelp
Big salads and little pizzas. We liked our server but wish he would have explained this more thoroughly. The salads are big enough for two and the pizzas are small, could be for two or one, depending on appetite. The first beer I ordered tasted like vomit. I asked our server for something different and he brought me the same kind, said the first one was a mistake. Second one tasted better, as it should have. Great place for pizza and a salad but outside option is betting during rush hours if you have the time to wait.
google avatar

Gavin M.

Yelp
Great oven-fire pizza and amazing appetizers. The wait is usually pretty long but well worth it!
google avatar

Zac W.

Yelp
I specifically traveled 2hrs to try this place. Didn't disappoint! Good char, no flop. I rarely give out 8s. Well earned 8.1. Staff is incredible as well.
google avatar

Yelp
This needs to be updated they are open at 50% right now 6/9/20 for inside and outside dining. They aren't taking reservations it was first come first served so we came at a time between lunch and dinner and were served right away. We come here every time we visit the area and are never disappointed. They use seasonal vegetables and fresh herbs. I like the overall vibe that feels close to the 3rd coast. The staff are attentive and friendly. Also I'm a pain in the a$& allergic to pistachios and they didn't blink an eye and used different utensils, etc.
google avatar

Alyssa W.

Yelp
Best pizza in town!!! Staff are so nice! Loved the pizza and bread sticks! The sauce was my favorite part, lots of flavor and the DESSERTS! Omg so good can't wait to come again!

Yelp
We showed up here on a Saturday night and were quickly seated without a reservation. There was plenty of parking space available, and there is nothing indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant is family run (owned by a husband wife duo, the host was their son, and their daughter is on the staff as well) and has a very chill, low key atmosphere. We could tell right away by the banter we saw that it's a local favorite! Here is what we ordered: Firecracker (appetizer) - a ball of goat cheese in a spicy red sauce with bread sticks on the side. One dish had as much bread as a pizza crust and is adequate for a 5-6 person group. The spicy tomato sauce was tangy and delicious, and the bread sticks were perfectly seasoned with cheese and pepper. The pizzas themselves did not fare as well. I think it was because we came in an hour before closing time, and so they rushed through our orders. There are a lot of vegetarian options, but I didn't find anything with chicken. Vegetable pizza - the crust was a little too charred for my liking, and the crust to sauce ratio was way too high, making the pizza very dry. The vegetable toppings were sparse too. Pepperoni pizza - I didn't personally have this one, but my friends reported that it was just okay, and could've done with more pepperoni. Desserts were a major hit! We got the s'more option which was a near perfect bite of dessert - the melt in your mouth marshmallow, the sticky sweet chocolate sauce, and the crushed graham cracker to add some balance. It did however get a little cloying toward the end, and we weren't able to finish the dish. We also got the biga (sp?) donut which is a dessert pizza with the crust, Olive oil, sea salt, Nutella, and cinnamon. The pizza crust was perfectly crisp and the sea salt and cinnamon cut the richness of the olive oil and Nutella. They have a decent selection of wines, local and draft beers, wines, and a sangria. My friends got beers and I got a glass of the house sangria, which was yummy and not very boozy. Service was impeccable throughout our meal, with both the server and host coming in to check up on us several times and attentively filling our glasses and clearing plates without us needing to ask. Definitely a must visit for dinner if you're in the area!

Philip D.

Yelp
We drove from South Bend to try the pizza at Stop 50 and it was good. Started with a salad, and let me say, unless you have a party of 4 get the half salad--they are huge. Lettuce was quality. Now for the pizza. I really enjoyed the pepperoni as well as the sausage pizzas. Crust was nice and chewy. My wife did not like the Margherita pie. She thought the sauce was bland and not enough cheese. Very good pizza.

Eric G.

Yelp
Pizza and salad were great. Small place that is very accommodating. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and really works hard! All the ingredients were fresh. Will be coming back often.

Corinne R.

Yelp
Loved this place today. After passing by all the crowded touristy places in New Buffalo stumbled upon this. Pizza was wood fired. Sooo good. Beer was local and cold. Waiter Chris was on point. Not over bearing or rushed yet had everything we needed amd was super friendly. Owner spoke to us as we left. Family business and they care about what they are doing. All staff seemed attentive and friendly. Definitely stop in for a pizza and beer. Salad looked huge and fresh, next time will get it along with gelato.

Yelp
Great stop for pizza! Crust was tasty and chewy, service was extremely friendly (brought my 4 year old a whole coloring book and box of crayons), atmosphere was delightful on the patio on a beautiful summer day. We also had the squash with Parmesan and the firecracker breadsticks, all yummy :)
google avatar

Lacey P.

Yelp
Yummy pizzas and very accommodating to our family of six. Hospitality was too notch and the pizzas was inventive and delicious. We appreciated everything and our one year old twins loved the meatballs.

Brandon J.

Yelp
I am from out of town and tried this place for the first time, and unfortunately it will be my last. Not only are the prices very high for the small portions they offer, the flavor is mediocre at best. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Tim R.

Yelp
Great thin crust, wood-fired pizza, great atmosphere, and great service during dinner. The quality and flavor of the cheese pizza is the true test of any pizza place and Stop 50's was fantastic...the crust, sauce, and cheese are all outstanding. Their other pizzas and desserts are also top notch. We went back the next day for lunch!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Made our yearly visit to Stop 50. Was great as usual. Chris, the owner, greeted us at the door. We don't make it up to Stop 50 often, but he remembered us and was friendly, as usual. The food was exceptional, as always. We started with the bread sticks with the house red sauce. My wife doesn't like red sauce, except at Stop 50. Cant explain it, but something simple as bread sticks and red sauce always hit the spot. Our daughter, who has stopped eating pizza, had the meatballs. My wife, who doesn't like meatballs (or sauce), love them too. We always hit Stop 50 in late fall and have the pleasure of eating the root vegetables as an appetizer. Fire-roasted carrots, parsnips, celery root, and onions are wonderful. Had the margherita pizza...simple but great. Of course we had the home-made gelato. Cannot make it to stop 50 without having the Pistachio gelato. Also had the seasonal pumpkin and coffee. Hard to eat just one bowl of gelato. Another great visit.

Gisela B.

Yelp
Friends meet for special occasions and they pick this place. Pizzas are great but The meatballs with bread and fantastic. Can't wait get back there before summer ends.
google avatar

B R.

Yelp
Friendly atmosphere. A good mix of crowd pleaser and inventive pizzas.

Rockey A.

Yelp
Great wood fire pizza. Great seating and atmosphere. Friendly staff. We didn't have to wait at all, but it is smaller, so if busy, I could see how there could be a little wait
