Grocery Store Safety: Which Chains Are Doing It Best? | Eater

"Employees required to self-quarantine by health authorities or the company are eligible for up to two weeks of paid sick leave and can tap accrued PTO thereafter; stores say jobs will be secure during COVID-19 recovery. Frontline safety measures include provision of KN95 masks and gloves, frequent handwashing and sanitizing of high-touch surfaces, plexiglass at checkout and pharmacy counters, limits on customer capacity, one-way aisles, and third-party cleaning support. The company encourages but does not universally require customers to wear masks. Workers and union representatives report generally cooperative relations on leave and pay, though customer behavior and inconsistent mask compliance remain concerns." - Rachel Sugar

Google
it really should earn a 3 1/2 star rating but Google won't let me do that! It's a little better than your average stop & Shop. I am concerned, as I am with Target, that there are more and more items that do not bear their brand on them! I'm pretty sure they used to have their own brand of juice. They still have their half-and-half. as with all of the chain at least in this area, stocking is kind of uneven, and some of the junior staff are dreadfully ignorant of where things might be. fortunately, I'm a pretty dedicated detective and shopper, so even though it annoys me, I will wander around until I find the deal I'm looking for. And that is the secret to Stop & Shop: get the flyer either in person or online and look for the special deals and make sure you have your shoppers card ! All you need is your phone number. and they give you decent discounts on a lot of items when you do have a card. And if you don't have it with you, you just punch in your phone number. all in all, though, I would have to say if you're a smart shopper and you want to get the best for your money, you want to head to your nearest Market Basket and or Aldi. And both of them have quite a bit of organic items. And they have them at vastly less than Whole Paycheck . I'm sure you know who I'm referring to!

Google
Stop and shop has been here for ever! And for a good reason, the prices are decent and they have a good selection of options. Clean well organized store. The bakery section is absolutely great, the make custom cakes for you with a little advance notice. They also have a florist and pharmacy.

Google
Place is pathetic but thanks to Saugus select people we have no place else to go. The price is so high, the inventory is awful and sporadic, the employees act like there too busy to look at ya let alone help you. What ever happened to the enormous Amazon store that never opened its doors. Saugus bent over backwards to that company and said nothing after we put up with detours and promises that never were kept so I guess as a taxpayer I'll keep paying my taxes cuz Saugus let Amazon skip out on there promise to pay all debts just like Weylus up the mountain that we still pay the taxes on. We as fixed income elderly citizens

Google
Everytime I come the prices are never accurate when ringing up. Told employees 5 times, still don’t fix it. I only shop here because it’s 2 min from my home.

Google
Ikram the lady at the register was very kind respectful and understanding and made sure that she would bag for me even though she didn’t have a bagger .It was strange because it felt different going to a register at this Stop and Shop where I was actually being treated with respect and kindness. Totally made my shopping experience way better !

Google
I have been using the shop on line pickup at store service since the pandemic started. Time slots for pick up are great, the employees lugging the groceries to my car are always friendly and willing to put them car. But that’s where any good rating stops! Their prices are the highest in the area for most items, the produce is not the freshest same with the deli . The few times I have gone inside the store it’s usually not clean , not well lit, and employees at checkout have no idea what a smile is. The quality of service has gone way down hill in the last couple years . Now when they bring out your groceries the employee just stands there doing nothing while you load your car. At first the bags were full to the point of ripping now since they started charging .10/bag not only have the prices increased but now the bags have one or two items per bag. My last pick up they used 6 bags when easily everything would have fit into 2-3 bags at most. I was seriously tempted to rebag them and try to get a refund. Yeah it’s only a minimal 10 cents a bag but take the over use multiplied by 100s of customers everyday it adds up fast. What’s next - charging a fee for using a carriage? Or a fee for the privilege of giving them your business? Stop n Shop needs to do better!!

Google
Cashier was texting as I put up my groceries - I was fine with that because sometimes you just have to answer someone. The problem was he never even acknowledged me. No hello, no eye contact, nothing!!! I began bagging my stuff - when he rang all in he started to throw my stuff in my bags. A super nice young man named Juan came over and nicely took over for me. He was friendly and did a nice job. The cashier passed me my receipt without any words!!!! Nothing again. Maybe he should stock shelves - where being rude is ok. The cherry on top was two items were paid for and not in my bags.

Yelp
I went in just to grab some bananas and I ended up spending $65. They had a couple things that looked really good. A lot of the protein was on sale the bananas the organic ones were super fresh. I like to buy them a little bit on the greener side. I found a new item grass fed meat balls. I figured I would try them. They had organic chicken on sale for approximately a third off and the wild caught fish for more than half off. I had to grab those, plus a few other items. Everyone is telling me stop and shop is very very expensive but I got some great buys. However, the produce did seem to be at least 25% overpriced according to Market Basket prices, but it was all super fresh. I'll still walk through and see if I can get deals on the proteins from now on, as for the store super clean, the clerks were extremely polite clean and very helpful. The parking lot is huge so you'll always get a spot. I would definitely shop here again.

Yelp
stip and shop Saugus dirty rotten fruits and vegetable's service very poor I gave up on this place market basket is the best

vinny o.

Yelp
I would give zero stars if I could, everything is awful!! Employees, meat, produce, deli. The worst one.

Yelp
Such a awesome store to go to! So clean and the employees are so nice. Stop &Shop always has my back! Also their store brand stuff is to die for. If you need a grocery store with good prices and sales, good quality items, and awesome service? Stop&Shop is the place to stop and shop. P.S the wing bar is top notch

Yelp
This Stop&Shop has really gone down hill fast and it seems it's not getting any better. It's not the employees who work here - not their fault but definitely a couple of managers show no leadership on how to make the experience better for me the customer and the employees who care about their job and the business Stop&Shop has put on this store. Terrible when you get home to eat the food to find out inside the bag of or bunch of fruit is already going bad ... same with their deli bologna. I paid with hard earned money, prices at a rate that's already gone higher each visit. The customer service hours never are consistent - the manager blames it on not enough personnel and people calling out - it's called hire people and pay them a decent pay rate. Then the manager blames corporate but don't say anything to corporate about real customer concerns. If you don't make corporate aware of shortages on good food to last and customer service needs to help, then you as a manager aren't doing your job! What kind of leadership is that to show your employees, particularly those who really care? Usually there are clean aisles and carts available. That's a small plus. Ask corporate to get on the same page with their customers and employees. It's insulting to charge 10 cents a brown bag, when I'm already doing self checkout (optional) and bagging because I like to do it. I say to Stop&Shop don't force your costs onto me, your customer! Who's running the business these days? There are options out there, and that's coming, because it seems corporate to the managers don't care about food quality, customer service and prices. I feel for the people older and or less technical these days, because you have "digital" coupons that if someone doesn't use them but think they're getting a sale until they're at the register and don't get the sale because they don't have a smartphone or don't know how to use this coupon. Your sale prices should be honored not matter what. You can see, this can go on and on ...

Yelp
This location now charges .10 for a paper bag. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? They already have the highest prices in the grocery business as well as the most lazy ignorant workers in the state. NEVER again, I will drive the extra 5 minutes to go to Market Basket. You will be out of business soon!!!

Christine W.

Yelp
Took "advantage" and I use that term loosely of the $2.99/pound cherry sale. We LOVE cherries. Alas I digress. Bought 2 bags... came to $18. I honestly don't think I had 6 pounds worth but again I digress. Got home. Cleaned them... threw out approximately half of them bc they were rotting before my eyes. Kept the good ones and the very next day most were "fuzzy" with mold... should they have gone bad in less than 18 hours. I think not. I also had to self check out while a young girl stood there probably to make certain I wasn't going to steal their .10cent brown bad (hindsight I should have just taken one.. checking my own groceries-bagging my own groceries AND then paying for my own bag... when do I get paid??? Never again stop and shop Saugus. Shame on you !!!

Yelp
Well I love this location because they offer plant based proteins but vegans, vegetarians and anyone wanting plant based foods beware--they have chicken and turkey and other meats in the section specifically labeled plant based (see pictures)! This is very discouraging especially for someone who cannot eat meat!! I did give this place two stars because of the fresh baked bread in the bakery. It smelled amazing and tasted even better when I had it at home!

Yelp
This store has gone downhill fast. The last 2 trips in have been brutal.i get people want to automate the experience but this store has gone too far. One of the cashiers gave me attitude because I didn't give her my card....note there were no baggers and I was doing the bagging when she asked. Long lines every time, management doesn't seem to care. There are plenty of options in the area and my Loyalty only goes so far when the customer experience is so poor.

Yelp
WTF no carts in store, had to go out and get one from parking lot. My biggest frustration is that lack of cashiers to take my hard earned cash. A wrecking ball will help this store. Rip it down dirty and antiquated

Yelp
Just left Saugus Stop and Shop. I observed many people with no gloves or masks on and many customers disregarding the "one way" markings on the aisles. When I complained to the manager I was told that she, the manager, did not have to deal with this issue or be berated by a customer such as myself. Wake up Saugus Stop and Shop. We have a serious health issue going on in case you haven't checked the news. Potential customers, do yourself and your family a favor and shop elsewhere in a much safer environment.

Yelp
I waited almost 15 minutes at the deli to order my food and still had to remind them that i was still waiting. Tonight was one of the bad nights at stop and shop and I really hope it gets better. I have never seen stop and shop like this. Please get better stop and shop.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Been going here longer than I can remember or care to admit. I don't think they could have made the aisles any narrower and stayed within fire codes. I'm sure all those point of display displays they have clogging the mentioned aisles does violate fire codes. I used to like the Boar's Head cold cuts until I started shopping at Pace's in Saugus. The Boar's Head ham within 3-4 four days would start smelling like ammonia, so I would toss it. The Dietz and Watson cold cuts I buy at Pace's after 3-4 days smell like cured ham. Awesomeness I buy only dry goods at the Stop and Shop now. But the experience is generally unpleasant, I'll probably start going to Hannafords. One of the good things about this location is that they hire mentally disadvantaged people. I consider that a big plus and like to support businesses that do something like that.

Janet M.

Yelp
One of the worst Stop and Shop stores around. Run down, poorly stocked, rude help. I try to avoid going there even though it's very convenient. Went to the deli for the first time in ages the other night. Young worker was cleaning equipment and ignored me for several minutes. When he finally decided to wait on me, he put down his spray bottle, adjusted his mask, and pulled up his pants. I asked him to change his gloves before cutting my order. He did so reluctantly, after giving me guff. Unacceptable. I hate this store. High prices and low quality.

Yelp
I really hope a store manager or supervisor reads this. Not because I want something for free or because I feel entitled but because the employee behavior was simply unacceptable. If you hate your job that much, please quit and save everybody from having to deal with your miserable attitude. The entire experience was completely and totally awful. From people taking up several parking spaces, as well as parking in the fire lane, to store layout and cleanliness, this Stop n Shop has a lot to be desired. The 2 deli associates ignored me while I stood (as the only customer) for over 5 minutes. They continued with their personal gossipy conversation and completely ignored me. I did not end up getting any deli items bc of them. The produce section is not only horribly laid out but half of the selection is already rotting and there are many many fruit flies. Several of the other customers were opening packages of strawberries, eating some, and tossing the moldy ones aside. Why does the store allow people to touch packaged fruit? And then throw it on the floor?! GROSS. The organic selection is pitiful at best. The few organic items they did carry were past the sell by date or already going bad and visibly mushy/moldy. I did my best to make responsible, nutritious, healthy choices. They really make it difficult for you here! Once I made my way to the cashier, the light was on however she refused to make eye contact or acknowledge me. I said "hello" as Pam the frumpy middle aged cashier continued to ignore me. I repeated myself except much louder this time, "HELLO!". Pam now looked up at me, furrowed her eyebrows, wrinkled her nose and said "What!?" I replied "I am simply saying hello. Maybe you should try to be a little nicer to people: especially paying customers." Chris, the teenage bagger looked up at me with blood shot squinty eyes and smiled. Pam scanned my groceries with a frown as Chris bagged them with a stoned smile. I paid for my items and as I left I turned around and said "I hope you both have a great evening! And hey, Pam, life is too short to be this miserable, smile!" She snorted as Chris giggled. Filthy dirty store, unsanitary mouth breather customers touching every piece of fruit, absent managers, terrible produce, simply awful organic selection, and VERY rude employees. One star for ample parking and one for being open late night. Avoid this SnS if you can!

Yelp
I stopped in to pick up some soda, chips, and ice while camping in the area. The store was set up very well. Several Stop and Shops have been placing low coolers across the back of the store which block the easy flow between aisles. This was not the case here. I also discovered they carry beer which is not the case in the stores in Western Mass. Check out was easy. The problem happened when we went to leave and we're accosted by a protester who was camped out by the exit door. I did not give the woman the time of day but clearly management should have moved her along.

Yelp
The layout of this location has got to be the worst one I've been to. This place is always packed with cars and it's difficult to find parking during a majority of the day. I believe this can be attributed to the fact that it's one of the few on the strip and the other being Whole Foods which is expensive. The layout looks like a child put it together and there is always clutter about. I've visited a lot of Stop & Shops in my day and this one just seemed to be the runt of the litter. Besides that, this is basically your run of the mill grocery store. One last note, avoid this place from the hours of 4-7 because the traffic around it is horrendous.

Margaret A.

Yelp
Dirty. Smelly. Canned goods over a year old. This place acts like there's nobody running the show.

Tim B.

Yelp
Rancid meat even tho the sell-by date is two days from now. Selling questionable meat because they don't want to throw it away? Bad refrigeration? Inept workers at the butchery? I dunno, but: bad bad bad.
google avatar

Maria J.

Yelp
The cashier Pamela was drinking her soda and eating potato chips in between scanning my groceries with her oily fingers. The line was held up for over 10 minutes with a price issue, the manager Junior shows up first about 10 minutes later irritated and says to the customer in front of me WHAT. Surely, he is lacking proper etiquette, he does not have the customer service skills needed to run a Stop & Shop supermarket and needs customer service training.

Lisa B.

Yelp
I was at Stop and Shop today to buy garlic. Looked to find the best one so I thought! When I got home and opened it it was rotten. This is not the first time I bought rotten produce at this Stop and Shop but it will be the last!

Marl D.

Yelp
Check every single expiration date because time and time again I've picked up food that is expired! I feel like none of the leafy vegetables ever look fresh... they're always already getting soggy. Some of the people that work there are very kind but some aren't- typical of people in general, nothing new there. Usually very packed and sometimes no carriages inside, but not always. Honestly I'm just here to complain about the expired food, I'm sick of it. It seems that it's mostly the organic as well as gluten free foods in both the freezer section and health food aisle. I can understand it's not a hot sell at this store but that is no excuse to have so much expired food.
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
Terrible customer service on a consistent basis. I'll go here in a pinch as it is the closest grocery store to me. But if I have the time I will drive further to go to a store where employees actually are willing to help you and talk to you in the checkout.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
I'll start on a positive note. Sto Sho is open till 11 which is convenient. They also carry Boar's Head products. Besides that I really don't have much to say. Everything I buy is cheaper at Hannaford and the produce selection at Hannaford is a million times better.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
Open till 11 pm. Prices ok. Service ok. It's ok.

Unknown K.

Yelp
Personally I feel like corporate should stop by unknown because I feel like higher management dosent treat the employees with respect enough on the many occasions I've visited there.
