Ann Arbor’s Best Brunch Restaurants | Eater Detroit

"This popular downtown brunch spot offers a wide variety of brunch options, ranging from hearty classics to lighter fare. The biggest challenge is making a choice: Will it be the North Side Scrambler, with chicken sausage, avocado, spinach, and Gouda? Or a bowl of ancient grains? Or overnight oats with dozens of topping options? Or you can say to heck with it and go all out on the blueberry-lemon cheesecake pancakes or the French toast churro stack. Takeout is available from its takeout restaurant just south of downtown." - Mary Hayes Weier

This place is a total vibe. The atmosphere is super chill and inviting, perfect for a weekend brunch and catching up with friends. The decor is really nice without feeling overdone, and there’s just a good energy about the whole place. The food was amazing. Everything we tried was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. You can tell they’re NOT just going through the motions in the kitchen, they actually love what they do. The staff is phenomenal. Super friendly, laid-back, but still really on point. You get the sense they know what they’re doing and actually enjoy being there, which makes all the difference. Definitely a new go-to for brunch. Can’t wait to come back.

The food was so good that I had to go back the next day for more! I was visiting the university for a couple of days and made two trips here - it was so good! Zeus is on Fire, the Croissant Sandwich, and the Veggie Tacos were all delicious! Veggie tacos might have been my favorite but you really can’t go wrong. The chai was great as well! Service was quick and everyone was super friendly. The gentleman taking the orders was super friendly and even recognized me when I went back the next day - was super helpful and made suggestions on what else to try. Definitely check this spot out!

Just go. I had the salmon toast. My daughter had the breakfast tacos and we added a hot honey biscuit. The atmosphere is open, the service was fast and the food was next level - fresh, beautifully presented, and delicious.

Love this place! It's my second time coming here and I am very impressed with the food! 6/3/25 This is becoming a morning breakfast place we really enjoy coming to. Me personally I'm just going down the menu and trying different things but today I tried the Southwest Bowl again no complaints really good food impressed with everything thus far my friend continues to get the Lox sandwich because he loves it so much. Definitely a must try!! 6/19/25 Today I got the cauliflower rice bowl and it was good but it wasn't my favorite but still worth a try! My friend got the salmon salad with the lemon vinaigrette and I tried a bite of that as well and it was delicious the lemon vinaigrette is so good and as always great service amazing food decent price. Thanks again for the consistency and great service!

We had lunch today at The Hen , which is located near the University of Michigan. While the food, atmosphere, and overall ambience were excellent, the experience was somewhat overshadowed by the long wait time. We arrived around 11:45 PM and had to wait in line for about 55 to 65 minutes just to place our order. Also, there is no dedicated parking available—you’ll need to find paid street parking nearby. Aside from the wait, everything else was great. The food was delicious, and the vibe of the place was really nice. Just be mindful of the timing if you’re planning to visit—it might be better to avoid peak lunch hours.

Stylish, lively, and delicious — The Hen Ann Arbor is a true brunch gem in downtown Ann Arbor. I came here with my family, and we were all impressed by the atmosphere and the food. The space is filled with natural light and leafy ceiling décor, giving it a fun, youthful vibe that’s perfect for a relaxed weekend outing. My son had the Scrambler — fluffy scrambled eggs with spinach, mushrooms, and cheese, served with crispy breakfast potatoes, rye toast, butter, and jam. Everything was flavorful and well-balanced. We also tried the Cajun Shrimp Roll, which was fresh, spicy, and wrapped in a soft turmeric tortilla, served with a side of vibrant fruit. My cappuccino came in a glass mug with a generous foam cap — smooth and satisfying. There’s a tempting pastry display near the counter (apple fritters and cinnamon rolls looked amazing), and the whole place was bustling but still comfortable. Service was very quick and kind, given that it was a busy morning. A fantastic family-friendly brunch spot — we’ll definitely be back.

Even though the line was long , it was moving at a reasonable pace. Ample space to handle the crowd Waffle flight is a must try. So many choices in the menu to choose from. Coffee was good. Restroom was clean

Google
Such a a cute spot but I really did not care for the set up of this establishment. You have to order and then the food is delivered to you, there are no servers. This would even be ok if there was more than one register but there isn't so the line was crazy. It kind of ruined the experience from the start. The food was good and so was the presentation, I also enjoyed the coffee but if you are on a time crunch, this is not the place for you.

Yelp
Easily one of my top restaurants in AA. I've been here soooo many times. Their whole menu is so good and very reasonably priced!!! Even for being so busy most times, their service is pretty quick. All the workers are super sweet too especially Frankie!! The vibes inside are super cute and well decorated. Menu highlights: breakfast tacos, no regrets salad, waffle flight combo
google avatar

Yelp
I was almost scared off by the line, but do not let that deter those who enjoy sweet breakfasts from enjoying the best breakfast you ever had!! That line may seem diabolical - but trust me - it's soooo worth it. The hostess Bella ensured the line moved like a well-oiled machine. I was worried about seating but the owner made sure people knew where to sit & the food followed shortly. So the cinnamon French toast generated tears of joy... everyone wanted a bite - they're lucky the portions are so big - I was willing to share. My teammate ordered a south side breakfast which looked great too but I had no room for more. The lattes & cappuccino were delish - one of us finished it before our food came & we were worried about getting in the line again. Huge props to Chris, the owner- he helped navigate to get another one before our food. Came out - ohh yum. The only bad thing about this place...they're only open until 3pm.

Yelp
Such a cute cafe with great and quick service! It's a nice place to get work done and/or meet up with friends. Waffle Flight Combo ($13) // (4.5/5) Love the variety ! It's a great way to sample and try the many options they have. The waffles are perfectly crispy but I found that the strawberry waffle is a bit too sweet for my liking. Mexican Hot Chocolate ($6) // (5/5) OH MY GOD !!! This drink is amazing and the presentation is so cute. Get this if you love cinnamon !

Yelp
Great healthy food options ,, spacious and clean looking place ,, stood in a long line but once we placed an order , it was ready in no Time and very tasty , will be definitely going back again

Yelp
got the pesto toast with gluten free bread. i also got scrambled instead of poached eggs and a side of potatoes instead of the salad. water is self serve which is good to know . staff are super friendly. boy at counter was super cute and i would've asked him out if i lived here #sadmoment my toast was beautiful and fantastic. and the potatoes are perfectly fluffy as well. not 100% sure but the gluten free bread seemed like canyon bake house 9 grain - so it was good

Yelp
Fantastic breakfast spot with a fast casual vibe. The pancakes are incredible in both size and flavor. Lots of good looking items on the menu so I will be sure to return.

Yelp
Loved the food here. My daughters each had the bagel sandwich, which was excellent and very filling. I had the waffle flight and a side of bacon. It was a big hit with us!

Sydni P.

Yelp
The food was seriously soooo good!! The only negative part of the experience was the long wait to order. I understand it being busy because it is so good, especially on a Saturday, but they only had one person at the register taking orders. I would rather spend my wait sitting down at a table rather than standing in line. I think we waited in line for over 30 minutes. The food came out relatively quick though. I really liked all of the food we tried and they had a good selection of canned drinks!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful interior with fast counter service, even though the line was long. The waffle flight is so much fun to share! The avocado toast was delicious and so fresh!

Yelp
What's weird is that I know I have written this review, and it keeps going away somehow. Stray Hen is very pretty and trendy on the inside, but their food doesn't live up to the hype. When you walk in, you order at the counter. They give you a number and bring out your food. I didn't like their coffee or the fancy drinks/juices. Just avoid that. The service was pleasant, and I was hyped to get a cinnamon roll to lift my spirits on a rough day. Sugar always boosts my mood. Instead, I essentially got the equivalent of a honey bun. It was so disappointing. I went on another occasion where a person I was with ordered at the bar and then had to be told that they didn't have the ingredients to make what she wanted that day. This should have been worked out before she ordered and had been waiting for her food. I haven't had a good experience, and I have been here 3 times.
google avatar

Yelp
Interior is very modern and aesthetic. Food presentation is so pretty. Overall very Instagrammable place. But the best part is: the food tastes AMAZING! Easily one of the best brunch places in Ann Arbor by far! Tip: MUST get the South Side Scramble!

Yelp
This place is a WW haven. All the food was excellent. We had the protein plate with salmon; 3 mahi mahi tacos, and breakfast tacos with no meat. It look to be very generous portions but we ate it all. It was $50 with a generous tip. The salmon & mahi filets were at least 4 ozs. Our daughter is vegan and elected to for go the bacon on her breakfast. Its a little different set up. You queue up and order at the counter prior to setting yourself. The food is then prepared and brought to your table. The tables are bused and cleaned up so you are not carrying your trash. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Sorry no pixs to add.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch on a Friday. The line was long, but moved fairly quickly and the food was delivered to my table promptly. It was beautifully presented with unique flavors! I had the Lemon Blueberry cheesecake pancakes and the pesto toast.

Naomi S.

Yelp
The food here is so amazing and scrumptious. I have gone about 5 times now and this never disappoints. The food is fresh, hand made and ingredients are delicious and healthy. I LOVE the ancient grain bowl with green goddess dressing. My son loves their Reece's pieces pancakes and the black and white chocolate chip pancakes. I have a food intolerance to sodium as well and they always ensure mine is made without any added. This place is a must for breakfast, brunch or lunch!
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
Stray Hen looks quite basic on the outside, but it actually wasn't such a bad spot. I thought the food was going to just be overpriced and trendy with no substance. My friend and I were pleasantly surprised! We both got breakfast here. I got the waffle sampler and she made her own oatmeal. The waffle sampler was a good size for the price and I loved the variety. The cookie butter and apple waffle were the best. The whipped cream was freshly made in house and I loved the presentation. She made her own oatmeal bowl (which was kinda overpriced), but she really loved it and thought it tasted good and wholesome. All and all, it was nothing special, but a solid choice.

Jenna S.

Yelp
THE BEST FOOD EVER! It was very good and the service was very very quick. I definitely recommend it if you are in the Ann Arbor area.

Yelp
Was visiting Ann Arbor with friends during the holiday season late December (post Christmas), was a wonderful experience. It's a cute place where the lines can get pretty long during the peak hours, although we went like a brunch-ish on a weekday it was still pretty full. The service was decently quick considering the busyness of the place. I saw the waffle flight and I knew that's exactly what I wanted. It was absolutely lip-smacking, I was tasting cookie butter for the first time and I was surprised how much I actually liked it. It's self serve when it comes to your beverages and coffee/tea. I also had a turmeric tea that was perfect for the snowy cold day. If you haven't been here already do give it a try the next time you're in town.

Yelp
Stray Hen is a trendy breakfast spot in downtown Ann Arbor. From the pics, everything looks delicious, but looks can be deceiving! The food is hit or miss. First of all, the Poke Tuna Salad wasn't good at all. I ate a few pieces of tuna, and it didn't taste fresh. I threw away the fish not only because it didn't taste good but I didn't want to get sick. The rest of the salad was fine but not worth $14 without good tuna on top! The breakfast food was a lot better in taste and a better deal with larger portions. My favorite was the homemade breakfast sausage. The toast entrees are tasty with a poached egg and veggies. The service is mediocre. It wasn't particularly friendly, but at least one worker by the cafe said goodbye to me and others as we walked out. I ordered take-out and was surprised that no plastic utensils were available. I was told that plastic utensils are sold here, but they ran out. This is a decent breakfast option in Ann Arbor, but I'm not clamoring to eat here again.

Yelp
Meant to write this review ages ago...oops! Delicious brunch spot in A2 worth checking out. Arrive early especially on weekends when the line gets long (out the door potentially) and the wait to order plus get food could be around 30-40 minutes. For those of you with young children you may have to keep them occupied during this time since you have to order first then grab seats. For a party of 6 we staked out a picnic table outside where there's about 5-6 tables. There's some seating inside as well. The food--for those of you who like sweet breakfast items, the blueberry cheesecake pancakes ($12, essentially blueberry ricotta pancakes) and the apple churros French toast ($13) were heaven on two platters. They managed to not be overly saccharine with a good balance of fruit tartness and fluffy moist pancake and brioche respectively. So decadent and not going to help you with your diet but you have to treat yourself once in a while ;) The southwest breakfast bowl $10 was beautiful and healthy, a well-balanced mix of ingredients, though not as flavorful and as one would expect. The sausage was good though. My other friend got the breakfast bagel sandwich ($6) which he enjoyed.

Yelp
I searched Yelp Ann Arbor for "best breakfast near me" and Stray Hen popped up. It looked great, stellar reviews, and a good location for us. Parking is a challenge but be persistent, spots open up. Excellent choice. Order when you walk-in and it is delivered to your table. Anything on the menu is customizable, nice touch. Minimal coffee selections but they hit the right spots and my Americano was perfect. Each choice for our four top was enjoyed by all. One dish was lost, they found it, and gave us an excellent Apple fritter for our inconvenience. Ably served by Bella, she's an excellent person and a great rep for the business. Great bathrooms, thanks for that. They close at 3. I don't know if they are the best, but they rank high for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice Ambience, the service was quick & the staff were friendly added bonus, It wasn't a good place to park unless paid. The food was good. Must try!!

Yelp
Stray Hen is not just a restaurant but a meeting spot, a experience and a feeling of everything that is Ann Arbor. It's as if everyone in town has heard of or eaten at stray hen. It's an eatery for everyone. It caters to everyone: students, business people, visitors, tourists, rich and poor, young and old. It's a unique set up. You pursue the menu as you wait in line. Then you order at the register. After you order, you sit wherever you want and they find you according to a playing card number you bring to your table. While ordering, I couldn't decide wether I wanted a cold brew or a seasonal hazelnut toffee. The pretty girl who just specialized in making the coffee said she'll make me something special. And WOW she made me a hazelnut toffee cold brew with drizzled caramel. WOW IT WAS AMAZING. THE FOOD WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD. I personally ordered a waffle flight which had 4 waffles each with different toppings. A side of Filet Mignon. And a side of 2 scrambled eggs (for the protein). Try to get in midweek maybe late morning. The place is popular.
google avatar

Marijke K.

Yelp
Came for brunch and was pleasantly surprised by the variety of options (both sweet and savory) that expanded beyond typical offerings. It's tricky but not impossible to find seating during peak times, and the line to order moves very slowly - otherwise this would have been a 5/5 (the cinnamon roll French toast was legit cinnamon rolls and I am here. for. it.)
google avatar

Lily N.

Yelp
I came on a Saturday afternoon and it was about a 40 minute wait. I ordered the Burrata Toast with Potatoes instead of a salad. The toast was delicious! However, for $15 and one slice of toast; I would hope that I would get the full burrata, they only gave me a half of a ball of burrata, rip off! My boyfriend got the Reese's pancakes which were a little too sweet and very heavy on the peanut butter, but the pancake was very fluffy and also tasty! Overall, the environment was good and my toast was delicious. However, I do think this is very overpriced for what we're getting and the wait was unreal. Not bad, I'd come back against

Gerald M.

Yelp
Food was amazing but the service was exceptional. I'm a business owner myself and exceptional. Customer service stands out and I can say that the Strayhan staff does a great job!!
google avatar

Maisha R.

Yelp
Stray hen is a gorgeous spot in Ann Arbor, especially for brunch! The interior is lovely with lots of seating, but beware on weekends the lines get LONG. You order at the counter prior to sitting down and last time I went the wait was well over an hour. The food was enjoyable with a diverse menu and lots of healthy and filling options. I enjoyed my grainy day breakfast bowl and would definitely want to try other things on the menu. Lattes were great too! Would definitely revisit on a weekday when waits are shorter.
google avatar

Wood W.

Yelp
There is almost always a line, but it moves fast. Drop someone off to get in line while you are looking for parking. Great food and coffee.
google avatar

Janae T.

Yelp
It was very busy when we got there we had to stand in line for a good 20-25 minutes before we actually sat down. But the food still came out hot and fresh. The pancakes were so good and fluffy. The restaurant is nice and cute, it had a lot of windows for a lot of sunlight to come through, you order in the middle of the restaurant and there is a lot of seating options within. 9/10 recommended
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
This restaurant is all vibes. You order at the counter and the coffee comes out first as you wait for your food. Quick service and delicious food. I haven't tried brunch here yet but as an everyday lunch this place is great, and the prices are reasonable.
google avatar

Nibuz E.

Yelp
Quick bite spot in A2. Love the vibe and the whole "don't sit til you order" rule which prevents folks from camping tables out! Really friendly staff with a cool drink bar type area where you can watch them make your drink. Also, really affordable! Stray hen, however, doesn't come without it's downsides which frankly is just bland food. They have sooo much potential with an eclectic menu, but anything from completely unseaned burritos, visually stunning yet boring waffles, and honestly just bad coffee I have high hopes for what stray hen's flavor COULD be vs what it actually is. Overall: great vibes, visually pleasing food, affordable, truly lacking any form of seasoning. Food is all cooked amazing. Just. Add. Seasoning.
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
Such great ambience and the food presentation is beautiful. It does get really busy during lunch so I recommend getting there before noon to beat the crowds. As I mentioned, the presentation is lovely, but the chefs could work on adding more seasoning to their dishes. The flavor of the salmon salad could be amped up quite a bit. Will definitely try again to see if other dishes have more of a flavor boost.
google avatar

Isabella C.

Yelp
I had a really amazing experience at the Stray Hen! The cinnamon roll was probably the best that I have had in my life, and the rest of the food was high-quality and amazing. The ambience was very nice, and they played a very cool music, the staff were also very friendly. The food came out quickly, and it was overall a great meal. Personally, I had the shrimp wrap, and although it was quite spicy, it was really great! My mom got the eggs, and they were extremely good, however, the portions are quite small. If you are really hungry, maybe up for a double portion! Overall, 10 out of 10 experience.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
Still awesome. This is one of my favorite lunch places. The staff is always awesome and the food never fails to impress. I had to order to go today and there is no difference in the food as when I eat in. The restaurant is always busy and always clean. If you haven't tried them yet, stop in!
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
Waited around half an hour when we arrived close to 10AM to order. Food came out very quickly - the breakfast burrito was pretty good but had a little too much egg - I wish it came with chorizo or some other meat option, but the corn was a good addition.
google avatar

Marc W.

Yelp
Incredibly satisfying breakfast food, made with care and served creatively. The wait can be a little long during peak times but it is worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
NEW BEST BRUNCH PLACE in Ann Arbor! Being a brunch aficionado I didn't know how much I was missing out on until a friend told me about this place. I had to bring a friend with me and she had the French toast with a side of potatoes and eggs. I had the blueberry lemon cheesecake pancakes and caramel macchiato and they were both 10/10. Fluffy thick pancakes with a slathering of cheesecake cream cheese topping and little wild blueberries- absolutely divine. Caramel macchiato with oat milk wasn't too sweet at all, just perfectly smooth and creamy. Presentation was on point with an orchid flower on top of the whipped cream and light dusting of powdered sugar. Service was great! It wasn't too crowded when we went late Sunday morning and our food came out in less than 20 minutes. As you walk in take a menu and get in line to order at the counter. They have takeout boxes and water/sparkling water at the counter on the right side as well as salt and pepper. They give you a table number and bring out your food to your table, but you have to go up and get your coffee when your name is called. The coffee drink prices and options are reasonable for Ann Arbor, and there are great food deals- oatmeal bar for $7 and breakfast sandwiches starting at $5. Great for college students on a budget!
google avatar

Chloe' H.

Yelp
Super cute cafe. Their food is fresh and tasty. You order at the counter and they'll bring the food out to you but the drinks you grab yourself after they call your name. Lots of seating, greenery, and natural light.
google avatar

Kimberly U.

Yelp
The food was fresh and had a great taste. Don't get scared when you walk in and see a line, it goes fast. The place is funky and cute. It's a small place and it was super cold in the restaurant.
google avatar

Dion T.

Yelp
I got the sausage, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich (everything bagel) and literally whispered to myself "...don't eat the whole thing right now, man." It worked, I ate half, pissed me off though because that thing is really good. Angrily staying healthy. The inside is clean, great window seats. They should adjust the organization though, some sociopath took my to-go sandwich order.
google avatar

Vaiva R.

Yelp
You may have to wait awhile for Stray Hen, But it is definitely worth the wait! The food is AMAZING and there is so many different options with coffee, tea, sweet and savory breakfasts. There is typically seating, but also a great place to take out. Could not recommend this place enough, it is SO good.
google avatar

Casey W.

Yelp
Great prices for the quality! Cauliflower rice could use more seasoning or sauce but everything else was pretty good. I also got a yogurt granola bowl but they used a nature valley granola bar which was disappointing. Felt like it broke the fourth wall but in a bad way
google avatar

oralia l.

Yelp
This place was great! We got there pretty early on a Saturday and still waited an hour to get our food. The food was fantastic and worth the price. Can not recommend the Apple fritter enough! We were so hungry I never took pictures but I will come back here even though we don't live near by
google avatar

Hellacious D.

Yelp
We were driving through Ann Arbor and hungry for brunch and were truly blown away by the wonderful healthy food options and ambience! I want to return to Ann Arbor just to eat here again :)
google avatar

Leah M.

Yelp
Tasty, fast food. Great menu selection, from donuts to healthy grain bowls. Friendly service, clean place and lively atmosphere. An overall win!
google avatar

Jamie B.

Yelp
Cute place! Cute modern decor, picture opportunities. I normally don't love waffles bc it's a lot of batter; but their mini waffle flights are so so good! Light and fluffy and I love the different options. Menu has a lot of options; would like to try some lunch options
google avatar

Dave W.

Yelp
My daughter knew about this place, so we decided to check it out when we found ourselves in Ann Arbor on a Saturday morning. The place has a great vibe, as soon as you walk in the door. It's bright and airy and the art on the walls is fun and whimsical. The menu offers a wider range of great options. I went for the North Side, which was light and tasty. My daughter had the strawberry waffles and my wife had the Pesto Toast - they both enjoyed their meals too! I'd love to back soon and try some other items on the menu!
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
First time stopping here and it was nice they had pay to park right outside, there is a parking lot nearby too within walking distance. The ambiance is very bright, refreshing, and calm. A variety of food was listed on the menu and it all sounded so good. My friend and I chose the breakfast tacos and sliders. Staff greeted us at the registered and the team brought our food out to the table. The prices felt appropriate and the items were packed with flavor. For drinks we both got iced lattes which were so good I forgot to take a snapshot. I would come back in a heartbeat.
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
First time here during the Art Festival. You wait in line to order at the counter and then are brought to your table. Cute place. Food was decent and would probably go again if in area.

Cheyenne M.

Yelp
Tried the burger and it was very good. They do not reduce the price if your remove the extra patty or remove avocado, but still a tasty burger. The service was and attentive

Naoko S.

Yelp
Oh my! I started giving up on Ann Arbor MI to find a yummy food after several trips last few years. This place blew my mind! Top notch pancake! Beautifully served in the sunny dining area. Nicely decorated casually with style and prices are reasonable. It was lunch time and super crowded and a long line to order and pay - which was a drawback. But ample seats and no wait for seating. Highly recommended.
