Where to Find the Best Chinese Food in Portland and Beyond - Eater Portland

"This restaurant in John’s Landing specializes in Sichuan cuisine, although Chinese American standards are also plentiful here. Heat seekers will be pleased to find a wide array of spicy dishes, like dry pot spare ribs, ma la fish, and eggplant swimming in hot garlic sauce. Although Street Wok does a steady stream of takeout orders, the restaurant has plenty of seating to enjoy dishes less suited for travel, like a bowl of hot boiling fish or crispy Sichuan prawns." - Seiji Nanbu, Janey Wong

Found a neat restaurant today. It serves one of homestyle fried bean curd and pork, accompanied by steamed rice. Was a bit oily and salty, but paired well with steamed rice. Reasonably priced and generous portion. Came in after lunch hour. Noted steady stream of customers and take out. Definitely, I will return to try other dishes.

I came to try out this spot for the 1st time on 9/15/24 with my aunt and mother, and I absolutely LOVED every single thing we ordered (Fried Rice, Honey walnut prawns, Orange chicken, Crab puffs, Beef broccoli, Chow mein combination, and Magolian beef). Everything was cooked to perfection, the taste was amazing, and the customer service was even better. I will definitely be returning soon.

Google
Menu has pictures which helps to decide what to order. Food was great! We had spicy chow mein combination and Mongolian beef.

If you're looking for some authentic Chinese food, check Street Wok out! It's right across from Starbucks in this cute little plaza and food is amazing. The first thing my husband commented on upon walking in to grab our pick up was how amazing it smelled. We got the garlic fried rice with shrimp, cashew chicken, Mongolian beef, garlic string beans, and the duck blood w/ pickled cabbage. I placed the order online and it was super easy. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and tasty! We will be back regularly.

Google
GEM of a little restaurant. I've had a lot of orange chicken, but theirs is the best. Tangy, fresh, delicious. Also had the stir fried green onion beef, amazing! We're down this way a couple times a month and will definitely be bringing home dinner!

Google
My husband, our friends and I tried Street Wok last night, we ordered for Pickup. I had the spicy dumplings, they were really tasty and actually spicy! I also tried the sesame chicken. It is as tender and delicious. My husband tried the shredded potato and liked it, but it was definitely a vinegar-lovers dish, a little too vinegary for my preference but he liked it a lot. Our friends got the General Tso's chicken and the hot and sour soup. They liked it a lot! This was only the 3rd night they were open and like all places in the US right now they are a little short handed and one of their shipments didn't come in so they did not have the fried milk or the garlic cucumber. My only real complaint was that rice does NOT come with the food so you have to order it in addition to your food. The rice was also a tad on the soggy side but not so much that it was inedible, to be honest that is just me being nitpicky. We will definitely be back! Can't wait until they have their full menu up and running and their vibe set inside!

Google
Ok I’ve been to this place since it opened and ordered more or less the same type of dish - Kung Pao Chicken. I went back I. The beginning because it had good flavor and an assortment of veggies. Each time I’ve gone back, this time two months dine the last, it’s gotten more bland and contains a highly inproportionate amount of onion. I like onion but this was way too much and the flavor was simply bland. Sorry, I probably will not return.

Google
Came to eat on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn’t busy at all! We were surprised because we saw this place had a lot of 5 star reviews / good reviews in general. We sat down by the window and we were greeted immediately by our server. We ordered the Mongolian beef and general tso chicken. Note, soup and rice comes with the meal during lunch Monday - Friday. Since it was Sunday we ordered rice in addition, which was only 1.50 per cup. The Mongolian beef and general tso chicken was so good. Definitely coming back to try more! I read some reviews on Yelp and some said the general tso chicken was chewy, I didn’t experience this. Mine was crispy :)

Yelp
Food is very tasty, well-presented, large portions. Crab puffs are really good. Large, portions are good sized, crispy and flavorful. Orange chicken was really good. Very large chicken chunks. Sauce was good.

Yelp
Trying out a new takeout spot and it is a tasty find. ~ good portions, good prices, good menu ~ good flavors, not overly salty ~ clean & new shop, staff wear masks ~ Christmas decorations still up near Spring lol Would call for to-go again.

Yelp
Went into this restaurant hoping for some good Chinese food. It was early in the evening, and we were only the second table occupied in the restaurant. The menus were pretty, and we ordered several things. Unfortunately, after our food arrived, we noticed there was no soy sauce or hot sauce at the table so we waited and waited as our food got cold, but nobody ever checked on us. Eventually, we walked up to the front counter and asked for soy sauce and hot sauce. One would think this would be a clue to keep an eye on our table, but no. We were not checked on at all and after we were done with our meal, we waited and waited, and eventually had to walk up to the counter to ask for our bill and some "to go" boxes. The food was subpar, and the service was not good. Our plates were not taken away, even after we had packed our own food. Will not be visiting here again.

Yelp
The eggplant tofu is very delicious! I am obsessed with spicy chow mein. Excellent and quick service. Lots of delicious Szechuan dishes that can't be found anywhere in Portland to be honest

Yelp
American Chinese staples like General Tao's and Orange Chicken are becoming increasingly difficult to find. The emergence of traditional and regional Chinese food in Portland is a welcome change but sometimes you just want the food you grew up eating. Street Wok is the perfect blend, serving up Sichuan dishes alongside Chinese American dishes with their own subtle takes. What emerges is not only what Americans expect from a Chinese restaurant but also dishes that are a welcome diversion. Hot pot, mapo tofu are found here too. Service was a little rough because only one lady working but she was very pleasant and accommodating. We were quite happy with our dishes and will be back for more.

Yelp
Ordered some take out and it was the right choice! Combo fried rice, crab Rangoon, spicy wonton, and honey walnut prawns was the perfect take out combo. The only thing we didn't receive were utensils even though it was specifically requested. The fried rice was a great dish. The prawns were delicious but over sauced. The appetizers were also a solid choice. I'll order here again!

Yelp
I just ordered from here for the first time. The chow mein had next to no flavor, very bland. The egg drop soup was the same. I needed to add a lot to it. The Mongolian beef was not cooked at the right temp. It was not under cooked but had no texture to it what so ever. I will say the greens and shrimp had wonderful flavor and probable the only thing out of me $100 order that I enjoyed however we paid a lot extra to have shrimp and had literally 4 shrimps in the whole dish. All in all, this was a bland and freeze meal with very literal texture at all.

Yelp
This is my first time at Street Wok. My friend Paulo has been following the Yelp reviews and said we have to go here. I was delightfully surprised at how fresh and authentic the food is here. We ordered Paulo's favorites: Kung Pao Chicken and Dry Cooked String Beans I asked them if they could add pork to the string beans. They were accommodating (with an up charge for the added pork) The veggie menu is extensive including American favorites including Broccoli String Beans, Eggplants and Tofu. They also have Chinese Choy Sum. The Dry Cooked String Beans were crisp and flavorful, especially with the added pork. The Kung Po Chicken was delightful with super fresh crisp vegetables and ample sized chunks of Chicken. The sauce was perfect and the peanuts too. We're definitely coming back.

Yelp
So glad that we have decided to come over and give this place a try. The place is clean and very spacious. The food not only tasty, authentic and the potion is large. All the dishes can test the dragon breath. The eggplants cooked just right. Not completely soft. The tofu is moist and juicy inside. The hot boiled fish packed with lots of flavor and chunks of fish inside gives you the satisfaction. The bottom of the bowl has mushroom and napa cabbage as well. The owner recommended us also try Sichuan City, his other restaurant.

Yelp
Out of all the Chinese restaurants I've been to in the Portland and surrounding areas, I have to say Street Wok is the best. I've come here on a number of occasions, and the food here never disappoints. My go to's are as follows Garlic fried rice-- I usually don't order fried rice because I don't think it's worth the price, but wow! The garlic fried rice here is so good. If you like garlic, this is the way to go. None of the artificial garlic, we are talking about real garlic. This fried rice is fragrant and exudes with flavor! Chongqing chicken-- the chicken is spicy, but I like that there is a slight sweetness to it. I personally like spicy food, so if you don't like spicy this may not be the right dish for you. Mapo tofu-- I love mapo tofu! I like that the mapo tofu here is spicy but not so numbing where you can't enjoy the taste. Again, I like spicy, and this dish is the perfect amount of spice for me. Generous amounts of cubed tofu Spicy chow mein-- yum!!! The noodles are not too thick but also not too thin. It has a nice texture where there's a nice bite to it. I like that it isn't too greasy, and can be eaten alone or with other dishes I've tried a number of dishes on the menu, and honestly you really cannot go wrong.

Yelp
We arrived when they first opened for our first visit here. The restaurant was really bare with no decorations/pictures on the wall. The gentleman who took our order was very friendly and attentive. We ordered the orange chicken and General Tso chicken. The lunches came with rice egg flower soup. We waited about 25 minutes (extra time because the rice wasn't ready) for our to go order. We were home and eating in 15 minutes. The soups was watery and mild, not what I'm used to. The orange chicken sauce was good but the breading was chewy. The General Tso chicken was supposed to be spicy - not spicy at all. The breading was also chewy. And the rice that we waited extra time for was mushy. I'm assuming we came on a bad day as this establishment has stellar reviews

Yelp
Stopped in here before the Blazer game. So happy we did. I ordered the Mongolian chicken, and my husband ordered the spicy garlic eggplant. Super nice and friendly service. I ordered my chicken as spicy as you can get it. It came out fairly fast... within ten minutes. It was huge. Like shocking huge. Way too much food for what they're charging. We could have easily shared. It wasn't spicy, at all, but the flavor was amazing!! I would do get it again. My husband had some as well and enjoyed it. His eggplant came out about ten minutes after mine. Well worth the wait. It was also delicious. We will come back. This place is great. You could easily split a plate of food with the amount you get!

Yelp
Yummy food. Decent service although we've had a waiter twice that didn't speak English super well and we had trouble getting what we were asking for. Little to no ambiance, but the food makes up for everything else.

Wow, top notch. Great service and great food. Everything we had was great. I highly recommend.

Yelp
This review reflects my experience on Christmas Eve. Probably more busy than they've ever been because they were very, and I mean very, inadequately staffed / prepared. This review has no comment on the food or it's quality. My experience has prevented any impulse to give this place another shot. Maybe that's my fault for wanting to dine-in somewhere on Christmas Eve, but it should never have been this bad. Went to dinner on Christmas Eve in a party of 3 (my wife, toddler and me). We even called ahead to reserve a table. All seemed fine when we sat down, until I noticed another table still had no food even after we were there for 25 mins. Then another table. Those tables ended up leaving one by one with no food ever showing. Forty minutes into our wait the waitress had only been by twice to take our order and deliver drinks. During our 1.25 hrs there, there were at all times a minimum of 6 people standing around for takeout. At one point at least a dozen people were waiting, in addition to 5-6 seated tables ranging from 2-6 people. After being there for at least an hour with no food, I got up and told the waitress that we would leave if our food wasn't there in 10 minutes. She went into the back and came over 5 mins later and told us to leave. We wouldn't be getting our food any time soon. We left after an 1.25 hours waiting for food without paying. During our time, there was a ton of food coming out of the kitchen- seriously being cranked out. However almost everything, 95%+, was being loaded into to-go boxes. It was clear that they had no system to or straight up were not prioritizing their in-house patrons. I'm not saying in-house needs to be served first, but I can't tell you how frustrating it was, being incredibly hungry, with a toddler, to see tons and tons of food coming out just to be packed up while everyone at tables sat there patiently. Sure, they've probably never been busier, but completely unacceptable imo. Before we left they sat a table of 7. I should have warned them to prepare for an overnight stay. Never again.

Yelp
* The food is spot on. 100% A+. Tastes so fresh and authentic. I've been here several times and every dish has been perfect. * Service is great. Employee are thoughtful, friendly, and attentive. * Ambiance is quiet and peaceful. Nice date place.

Yelp
Placed an early Xmas day order, and the restaurant canceled 30 minutes before delivery. Humbug. Scrooge will reach out to you. I retract my previous review. Understanding this was your first Christmas things happen. I'm glad we had dinner tonight at Street Wok. Excellent food and staff. Highly recommend sesame beef and potstickers.

Yelp
Fantastic food and super friendly owners! Can't wait to come back soon. We ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and Chow Mein. Dishes were very flavorful without too much oil- done to perfection. This is my now go-to Chinese spot in Portland- best I've had in town!

Yelp
Authentic hole in the wall Chinese food with great service. They go out of their way to help, got a free soup while I was waiting for my Order. I hope they stay popular!

Yelp
We stopped in after seeing the reviews We ordered the Kung pao chicken It was good Also ordered the general Tso chicken And was not good it tasted like citrus was added to it The cook/owner came and said he added things to boost up the flavor In my opinion he ruined my dish, he could see we didn't eat it, it was horrible And I still paid for it, taking something home I wasn't going to eat( throwing money away) The pluses Friendly service Good tea Soups were good Hot and sour Egg drop Please don't mess with people's order unless you tell them I was so disappointed in my experience just because of that one dish Will we be back I don't know yet But I wish them success and longevity

Yelp
We had the Chong Qing chicken, 3 mushrooms with Bokchoy and the green beans. They were all so delicious and we loved it here. The rice was cooked perfectly. Looking forward to visiting again. The service was great and timely. He made sure we had everything we needed. The ambiance was perfect and there was a table of police officers seated by the door having dinner so we felt extra safe and protected. It was great. The area of the restaurant is a really nice neighborhood.

Yelp
We came on Christmas night and it was pretty busy. They had a full dining room and appeared to be doing a lot of takeout orders. The reviews seemed to be positive and we thought we'd give it a try. The food was so-so. The slice was good (I like spice) but everything was very greasy. I think they fried their food with good quality oil, but it was too oily for our 4-top.
google avatar

Lori S.

Yelp
Excellent food! The eggplant was perfect and fresh tasting with a hint of heat. Green beans were also quite tasty. Cashew chicken was delicious with some nice peppers and onions. The fried rice with shrimp was perfectly done. So pleased to have great Chinese food in the area. Thank goodness! The woman working there was super pleasant and the food came out quick and hot.

Yelp
Delicious! Great price! Very clean and comfortable restaurant. Great service very prompt. I got the combo chow mein, coke and gave a tip for $20. Very tasty! Ample parking. Easy access. I will be a regular customer! Thank, Street Wok!

Yelp
Have dined in and taken out. Food and service have been very good. I think we were the last orders of the day and they were accommodating both times.

Yelp
We really hope this business reads this review. We love the food here. We've been coming to eat since the first week they opened. We invited friends and family to join us for a Christmas Eve dinner. I stopped in at 11AM to reserve a table for our party. When we arrived at 6 the restaurant was hopping, but we were seated quickly, and after a bit of a wait our order was taken. Meanwhile a long queue had formed of customers waiting to pick up meals that they had ordered online. At the one hour mark we were served our soup. But that's the only thing we got. Meanwhile the restaurant staff, obviously overwhelmed by online orders (at this point I counted 28 people waiting) tried to keep up. The customers who were seated were simply ignored. I saw at least one other table give up and leave, and at the two hour mark, so did we. I have never been so embarrassed! Here we had planned a happy holiday time with friends and family only to have the evening completely wrecked by by poor management on the part of the restaurant. Priority should have been given to the dine-in patrons, and at some point the online orders should have been cut off. Street Wok needs to decide if it wants to continue dine in service at all or just concentrate on their online sales, because obviously they cannot handle both during a rush.

Yelp
All I have to say is - I have moved here in April, have been looking high and low for decent fried rice, this was amazing! Good quality, amazing price and good flavor! I Doordashed my order and it came still very hot! Can't wait to try it when my hubby gets back, hope he'll like it as I did. Recommend!

Yelp
This place was pretty good. The restaurant itself is pretty bare bones but no problem with that. The food is what matters.
google avatar

Yelp
Just had eggplant in hot garlic sauce and Mongolian beef and they were both really really good! Huge portions! Will come back to try more stuff on their Menu! Wish I could come with a huge group of people to order many more dishes!!

Yelp
I have to say, I'm not usually a fan of Chinese-American food. In my experience, the quality is often subpar and the flavors can be quite bland. Street Wok is the EXTREME opposite. It is the closest thing to authentic Chinese food that I've had since dining at House of Nanking in San Francisco 18 years ago. Each dish has a unique flavor profile that is bursting with spices and herbs. I'm truly blown away by the quality and authenticity of the food here. It's clear that the chef puts a lot of care and thought into every dish, and it really shows in the final product. Each dish tastes completely different from the others, and each one is more delicious than the last. Mark my words, Netflix WILL find this restaurant... and when it does, well, you'll just say, I remember when... it was empty... Despite the poor ambiance, with millennial music blaring in the background, the food more than makes up for it. In fact, most people seem to just order takeout. My hope is that the owner considers playing authentic Chinese music instead, to enhance the ambiance and provide a more immersive dining experience. Additionally, table cloths, flowers, plants and other decorations could be added to create a more cozy and inviting atmosphere. In summary, if you're a fan of bold and delicious flavors, or if you've never had good Chinese food in America, this restaurant is a must-try. Trust me; you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Jasper L.

Yelp
I took my family here tonight for dinner after seeing this pop up in a Yelp search. It's hard to find authentic Chinese food in the Portland area, but after eating here I can say that this place is legit. We had the dry fried string beans (on the owner's recommendation), Mongolian Beef, Honey Walnut Prawns, and Chicken Chow Mien. My kiddos can't do spicy and they were able to make everything mild but still full of flavor. All the dishes were great, with the string beans and Mongolian Beef really standing out. I lived in China for over 3 years, and this is one of the only places in the Portland area that really reminded me of the flavors from my time there. I'm already looking at the menu to plan what I'll get next time. Well done!!!

Yelp
"Street Wok is an absolute gem! The culinary experience here is a symphony of flavors, with impeccably fresh ingredients expertly crafted into mouthwatering dishes. During our inaugural visit, we indulged in the Mongolian Chicken, potstickers, and hot and sour soup--each dish surpassing our already high expectations. What sets Street Wok apart is not just the delectable cuisine but also the thoughtful inclusion of white rice and hot tea with dine-in orders at no extra charge. This attention to detail elevates the dining experience, making Street Wok my undisputed new favorite for Chinese cuisine. Every bite is a testament to their commitment to excellence, and I can't wait to return for another exquisite culinary adventure."

Yelp
Legit. We've driven by and watched the space turn over multiple times. When Street Wok opened we thought, 'let's see how long this place lasts.' A bit cynical. But tonight decided to give it a go. Ordered four dishes take out. All excellent. Good flavors. Generous portions. Interesting options. Friendly staff. We have found our neighborhood go-to for a dinner treat. Mongolian beef was quite tasty, as was the garlic spareribs and pickled cabbage pork with tofu. Combination fried rice tied it all together We're now looking forward to trying other menu options. Here's hoping that Street Wok remains open for the long run. Give it a try. Based on tonight's experience, you won't be disappointed! Posted same review on Google. Suggests that I really do like this place and want it to succeed. Yelp and Google Reviews are my go to for finding restaurants

Yelp
We live closeby but hadn't tried yet. We were seriously done with Chinese Food after bad experiences at other places since moving to Portland. But while walking along the river, someone stopped to chat and highly recommended. We decided to give it a try. What a nice surprise. Joey greeted us at the front and from there was such a nice experience. A clean, well-decorated environment, great service, good timing and fresh food. We ordered Kung Pao Chicken and Garlic Green Beans. The vegetables were fresh and still bright, the flavors were just right, cooked to perfection and NO extra oiliness going on. We will be back and if you haven't tried yet, get over there.

Yelp
We just discovered this spot, and learned they opened two weeks ago. Food is delicious & staff was very friendly. We got the cashew chicken & Mongolian beef. Recommend both, especially the chicken dish. We'll be back!

Yelp
what a great takeaway place, great service and dinner items were perfect. Easy stop, order online or call in!

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised to find a recently opened, authentic Chinese restaurant in the Macadam/South Waterfront area, across the parking lot from Starbucks. We ordered the sweet and sour fish filet, the garlic pork spare rib and the salted egg yolk shrimp. OMG! Everything was so delicious! The fish filet sauce was flavorful (and special) and it was lightly breaded with the right amont of batter. The garlic spare ribs were wok'd so well that they were so addictive! And oh, the salted egg yolk shrimp was our favorite! The shrimps were cooked properly with a very flavorful taste of the salted egg yolk! We will definitely come back for MORE FOOD soon!

A-Li Y.

Yelp
We always order the garlic fried rice and garlic green beans because they are just so garlicky and delicious! If you are a fan of that allium I highly suggest you get these dishes. Everything else we have tried so far has also been very tasty such has the cashew nut chicken, vegetable chow mein, sesame beef and kung pao chicken. We just found out about this restaurant 2 weeks ago and have already ordered from them twice, which is a LOT for us as we usually prefer eating home cooked meals, but we have really been enjoying Street Wok.
google avatar

Astrea M.

Yelp
Did Grubhub takeout chicken fried rice solid (I added soy sauce of course) as well as the honey walnut prawns which fulfilled my sf Chinese food cravings. But the star of the show was the dry spicy spareribs!!! They were crispy and spicy! Not for the weak of heart the heat will keep up on you!

Jason P.

Yelp
We've got takeout here several times now and have loved everything that we've tried so far! The chow mein is very flavorful and not greasy like we've had at other Chinese places The garlic fried rice is excellent My favorite is either the cashew chicken or the kung pao chicken Our family loved the pot stickers and the sesame beef both. Their garlic green beans are the best I've ever had anywhere. Love this place! You won't be disappointed

R T.

Yelp
Great food with excellent price. Comfort food for cold nights. Service can be slow if there are a lot of takeouts. There were only two people at the front part of the house and they were busting their asses. Otherwise, be patient. The servers are nice and very accommodating and the food is worth the wait. We had garlic fried rice (we asked for just eggs. It was simple yet executed well), which paired well with dry cooked strig beans. Vegetarian friendly place. So good, we will return again very soon.

Wyatt H.

Yelp
Really good and authentic food. Chong Qing chicken was excellent. Anything with a pepper next to it on the menu is spicy! Not your typical Chinese fare.

N K.

Yelp
We got takeout and ordered the Hot and spicy soup, Mapo tofu, Sichuan kung pao chicken and Sichuan dumplings - everything was delicious! Everything was well seasoned and well made. Will definitely be going back.

Yelp
Delicious food, thoughtful and excellent service. We've dined here several times and enjoy it ever time. It's very tasty with generous portions.

Thomas H.

Yelp
I ate here today. The staff were very gracious and courteous. The food is 100 percent quality. The establishment is very clean and welcoming. I do not go to any restaurants without vetting them prior!!! This place is legit! Had the Cashew Nut Chicken and the Sichuan dumplings. Wok City and 28 Tigers are fantastic!

Katie H.

Yelp
Mapo tofu is the best I've had since I moved back from China. Not Sichuan province spicy, but still hot and very delicious!!

Nick D.

Yelp
The best Chinese food I've had in Portland! Very tasty, fresh, and the service is great too. Portions are big, and the prices very fair.

Yelp
Great Asian cuisine. Attentive service. Safe location with parking close to nearby waterfront parks.
