"This restaurant is set within the historic and picturesque Archers’ Tower in Ljubljana, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, easily reachable in just a few minutes by funicular (last ride at 7 PM, so the return must be made on foot or by taxi). The elegant dining room, adorned with sgraffito murals from the 1950s inspired by local folk songs, provides the perfect backdrop for Igor Jagodic’s cuisine. The chef offers a single nine-course tasting menu, which can be reduced to seven or five courses, featuring modern and creative dishes that pay homage to Mediterranean tradition. Highlights include the turbot with Adriatic shrimp, leek, pistachio, and bacon, as well as the roe deer tartare with hazelnuts and shiso leaves. This fine dining restaurant can be found in the famous Ljubijana castle (in the archer’s tower no less!), and is a delectable feast for your tastebuds (and the view is as breathtaking as the food). Nothing here will confuse the weary traveller, no curious combinations or fusion food at this restaurant. It is classic contemporary cuisine, but a few dishes certainly do stand out: Sulec freshwater trout or a very gratifying apple strudel. The chef (Igor Jagodic) has been named multiple times as the best chef in the country, and it definitely isn’t for nothing. Don’t hesitate and try the various tasting menu options.

Restaurant Strelec – Michelin One Star Ljubljana Castle An unexpectedly refined gastronomic experience inside the tower of Ljubljana Castle. The atmosphere is solemn yet warm, surrounded by the striking 1952 murals in white, red and green, inspired by Slovenian folk traditions. The tasting menu was particularly memorable for: • CAULIFLOWER – egg yolk, breadcrumbs and truffles Rich yet balanced. Deeply aromatic and beautifully structured. • SPELT AND MUSHROOMS Subtle garlic-consommé and soy-like umami notes. A fascinating bridge between Central Europe and Japan. • VENISON – beetroot, thyme, dried figs and Solkan radicchio Powerful, almost liver-like texture with impressive depth. The wine pairing is ambitious and focused on Slovenian indigenous varieties. On their own, some wines felt sharp or mineral-driven, even slightly herbal or seaweed-like, but with the dishes they transformed into surprisingly harmonious pairings. That level of design deserves recognition. Service is professional and serious, though slightly reserved. A bit more spontaneity would elevate the experience even further. At around €200 per person with full pairing for 7 courses, the value is exceptional compared to Paris. A very strong one-star restaurant with clear identity and potential to grow even further.

We had a wonderful evening with excellent food and a stunning ambiance. Luka was an exceptional host who guided us perfectly through the dinner. The dishes and the wine were unbelievably good. Highly recommended—Strelec is a perfect choice for a truly wonderful evening.

Want to fine dine at the top of a castle steeped in history? Want to romanticise life—or heck, impress your date? Then you have to visit this place. It’s not every day you get to wine and dine like nobility in an actual castle. Sumptuous food, impeccable vibes, and stellar service (shoutout to Luka!). Totally worth every penny—bang for your buck, no doubt. I went for seven courses because I wanted to try an extra main and dessert… absolutely rolled out of there full to the brim. The name Strelec means “Archer” in Slovene—a nod to the restaurant’s location in a former turret tower, where archers once shot through the narrow windows that still surround the dining room. How cool is that? Tip: I came right after sunset 5pm in November. Plan accordingly to catch the beautiful alpenglow over the mountain range ahead.

We had an amazing evening at restaurant Strelec! We started with the greetings from the chef in the outside area overlooking Ljubjana, and afterwards we continued in the nice dining area inside for the rest of the menu. The sommelier explained a lot about the wines, and gave us the opportunity to taste some extra wines as we’re very interested in wines. The wines are amazing and we loved how the sommelier made our night extra special. We really liked the food as well. It was a great experience thanks to the amazing staff. We would definitely come back!

We had a really nice dinner at Strelec, which is located in one of the towers of Ljubljana Castle. The restaurant is a bit up the hill—taking the funicular is a good idea, especially on the way up, as the path is quite steep. Walking down afterwards is much more enjoyable. We combined our dinner with a visit to the castle and its museums, which worked out really well as a full afternoon and evening plan. In summer, you can sit outside with beautiful views over the castle grounds and the city. Inside, the round room has a special atmosphere too, with great views—some through historic arrow slits that remind you of the building’s medieval past. The staff were very friendly and attentive. With prior notice, they offered a pescatarian menu, which was much appreciated. Dinner started with a small bite from the kitchen, followed by a 7-course menu. Wine or non-alcoholic pairings are available—we chose the wine, and the local Slovenian selections were really well matched with the food. Everything was made from local ingredients, presented in a creative but not overcomplicated way. One of the highlights: the smoked butter with freshly baked sourdough bread—simple but unforgettable. It’s a great place, not just because of the location and views, but also thanks to the thoughtful food and warm service. Just make sure to book in advance—it can get busy, especially on weekends.

Every course was a flavour adventure, full of surprises and little touches that kept us smiling from start to finish. It wasn’t just dinner, it was a journey—each plate more creative and delicious than the last. The setting? Magical. The food? Fabulous. The whole experience? An absolute privilege. If you’re in Ljubljana and want a night that combines history, atmosphere, and incredible cuisine, Strelec should be at the very top of your list.

Review from 17 May 2025 After dining here, you will reflect upon this evening with a devilish smile of satisfaction. Prepare to be embraced by a Team of passionate first class professionals upon entering the calm and inviting space known as Archer’s Tower. An early seating for a 7 course meal allowed us to take advantage of the golden hour lighting which seamlessly faded to night. Do we eat everything? No, but tonight our answer was yes. 11 courses and 3+ hours passed without notice as we were lulled into a gastronomy experience by the creative force known as Head Chef Igor Jagodic. Igor’s attention to fresh flavors and cooking techniques can best be described as unparalleled perfection. While photos fall short of the evening’s full experience, please know you are in good hands. We were greeted by the Kitchen with two amuse bouches, followed by 7 courses and ending with two mignardises. Spectacular. We relied on Slovenian wine pairings by our knowledgeable Sommelier. Much gratitude and appreciation to all Strelec Team Members who ensured our evening was a memorable dining experience. **** Please note: if you decide to walk up to the Castle, consider smart footwear. You will be more comfortable, especially, when using your phone’s flashlight to walk downhill. The switchbacks end closer to Archer’s Tower versus the direct steep ascend path. Attire: Smart Casual, but you do you.
