Holy moly! This is some of the best food I’ve ever had. Go for lunch and get their 3 course meal deal. I got the goulash soup (so flavorful), veal schnitzel with mushroom gravy, kraut, and fried potatos (the gravy was deliciously buttery and the kraut was lightly sweet), and the sticky toffee pudding (to die for). Service was excellent too.

First time here since I was a little kid. It was a great experience. Our waiter Jeffrey explained everything we asked about, was friendly and funny. A perfect guide for our first German eating experience. We had and shared the shank bone meal and the German sampler, both were very tasty along with a couple of local brews. The chocolate mousse dessert was to die for!

Google
This was the first restaurant we chose on our vacation and it set the bar extremely high for all the rest. The food was outstanding. The goulash is something I will be talking about for a very long time. The service was excellent. I will go back to Springfield just for this restaurant at some point. Highly recommend.

Google
Extremely special and magical experience at Christmas! We got the coziest booth and were able to hear beautiful carols right at our table! Amazing how hard everyone was working. The decorations were so beautiful as well. This is one of those places that makes you feel like you could be in another time or place. Such a perfect, festive and special place! Thank you!

Google
It was a great experience! The food was great, despite a tougher piece in the chicken. The staff was the most helpful, and always checked in and made sure everything went smoothly. The ambiance is amazing, especially around the holidays. It feels like a Christmas movie. The downside was the table we sat at had a Christmas tree blocking it, so getting up to use the bathroom meant 4 people had to move. In the fall they have an awesome October fest with outdoor seating. I definitely recommend stopping by!

Google
A nice restaurant for a good experience for German food. The place was very interesting with its interior decor and all the items and decoration around. The service was very friendly and nice. The food was okay.

Last weekend I went to this German restaurant with a couple friends, and it was honestly a nice suprise. The place has a cozy, kinda old-world vibe that feels pretty welcoming. I had the schnitzel and spaetzle, which were both realy tasty and came out hot and fresh. Portions were decent without being too much. The staff was friendly and checked on us a few times, but not in an annoying way. Prices felt fair for what you get. Overall, I’d go back again when I’m craving something different from the usual spots.

Google
I had a great experience at Student Prince Cafe and The Fort. The moment I walked in, the atmosphere really stood out—warm, classic, and full of character with all the steins and old-world décor. It feels like a place with real history, and the staff make it even better. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and attentive without being pushy. The food was excellent. I tried a few German dishes, and everything tasted fresh and authentic. The portions were generous, and the flavors were spot-on. You can tell this place takes pride in what they serve. The drinks menu is also impressive, especially if you enjoy good beer—there are lots of great options to choose from. Service throughout the meal was consistent and smooth. Even when it got busy, they kept everything moving and checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. The place has a lively but comfortable vibe, perfect for a casual dinner, a night out, or trying something new in the area. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit and would definitely come back. Great food, great service, and a unique setting that makes the whole experience feel special. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We visited on a Sunday afternoon. Although we had a reservation, we probably could have walked right in and gotten seated immediatly. The dining room and bar area are both very attractive with dark woodwork, and we were seated right next to a gorgeous stained glass window. Our server was friendly, knowledgable, and very helpful in telling us what the top menu items are since it was our first time visiting The Student Prince. To start, we ordered the Fried Camembert and the potato pancakes. Both were really good and we would order them again. For my entree, I ordered Paprika schnitzel with spatzle and pan fried potatoes. Yum! It was excellent and the serving size was large enough for left overs. My friend ordered a burger, and although I scoffed at him for not trying something German, his burger did look amazing. We had previously been to a different German restaurant in a nearby town, but we much preferred The Student Prince and will look forward to visiting again when we are back in Springfield.

Yelp
The Student Prince is always a worth a visit if you are in Springfield. I tried the Veal Sommer Schnitzel and it was delicious. Oysters Casinos were cooked perfectly. It's a very cool German style restaurant. Shelley, our waitress was friendly and attentive.. I highly recommend making a trip here and enjoying some German beer and great food.

Yelp
A little disappointing based on my pasts visits years ago. The Sauerbraten I ordered, I believe, was an eye of the round cut rather than a customery, chuck or Rump Roast which would have been infinitely more flavorful than the eye round. Meat was tender but lacking in flavor and very dry. Spätzle while not bad, I don't think it was made fresh, might have been a frozen product. Nothing wrong with frozen products but fresh is best when doing dumplings. Can't say I picked up on the gingersnap flavor in the gravy either. Rotkohl was very good, however; the real standout was the Sticky Pudding it was phenomenal! Service was good; the ambiance is exceptional, for $91 incl. tip I would have expected more.

Yelp
Went in a couple weeks ago following Thanksgiving for lunch, ate at the bar with a friend. The restaurant was on a limited menu for Christmas (this wasn't explained to us, but that's OK) but was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Definitely worth going to for that reason. We both had the same thing right off of the menu, two orders of Jager schnitzel, potato pancakes, and a couple beers. The food was great, no complaints there, and it came out pretty quickly. We didn't ask for too much, and were not demanding. My only issue was with service. Our bartender was a 30s male, tattoos, hipster-y. There was an older couple at the corner of the bar that had the majority of his attention. Besides complaining about earlier business (he said he had to make too many specialty drinks), he made it clear to the bar that these two on the corner were regulars, and they were worthy of extras, such as a double serving of their chauvinette (ice cream liquor drink). When we ordered one to split he made it clear that ours would not look like theirs because they are "regulars". Didn't say goodbye or thank you to us, just ran the check and that was it. That's fine that you give your regulars a bit extra service but don't make this known to everyone else at the bar. We left feeling a bit deflated and underwhelmed.

Yelp
We had a celebration of life October 18 in the Heidelberg room. The service and food was amazing. The staff Karolina and Nancy were great. Also the managers Johnh and Billy were so helpful and putting the celebration together my father-in-law who we celebrated loved the student prince.Ueli Jucker was a Swiss Olympian who loved going there for its European flare. Thanks again George Conlin and the Jucker family Prost.

Yelp
Very good meal made great by our amazing and hilarious waiter, Jeff who interacted and cajoled our son; it won't be a meal we'll ever forget. We had a giant soft pretzel to start, accompanied by beer sauce (ok) and honey mustard (great). Entrees included a burger, chicken schnitzel and braised pork shank. All were very good, without being exceptional. The apple strudel dessert made on site was incredible. The decor was festive as they were transitioning from Oktoberfest to Christmas.

Yelp
One of my favorites of all time! German beer choices are excellent and I love German beer! All the people who work here are excellent! I've been coming since 1983 as I have a German brother in law who introduced me this place way back when. I miss the original owner Ruprecht but Student Prince still thrives and food is always high quality. Plus, it's like eating in a museum. Those beer steins all over the place are very cool to look at!
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
This is the one and only German eatery in the area and we treasure it! On a very hot day went for dinner -- the schnitzel with home fries and sauerkraut is authentic, absolutely adore the cucumber salad! Enjoyed a signature cocktail for dessert. Hubby had a beer and we rolled out into the heat. We will be back!
google avatar

Lee E.

Yelp
Good overall. The beer is certainly German and perhaps main draw. The goulash is good, and the Jaeger Schnitzel was ok. Disappointed in the spaetzel however - breaded? Great little waitress. And outside the endless stines, liked the interior.

Yelp
The Student Prince is a product of a world that doesn't exist anymore. It's a Valiant hold out to when restaurants embraced unique identities. From when you walk in and you see the walls lined with one of the most Impressive collection of beer steins and a keen eve can spot here and there the infamous Das Boot! From Beer Fest. The food is hearty and rich. The menu leaves you feeling satisfied and full the wait staff is attentive and knowledgeable of German cuisine. They know their dishes and they know the subtle differences between the schnitzels and the brats. I had the Pork Shank with a side Caesar. Since I am diabetic. The pork was tender well seasoned was covered in a rich brown gravy. Their Caesar was perfect romaine, Caesar dressing, croutons parm cheese and bacon... a nice twist giving a nice salty savory flavor to the salad. My wife Sauerbraten and it was tender and flavorful. The spatle is also great. Overall it was a great dinner paired with a nice white wine and a Jack and Diet Coke for myself. If you are downtown and want to make your dinner a culinary adventure into Germany. This is a must.

Yelp
The best German food in Massachusetts. Place is a charm! Any time I'm in Springfield I have to stop by. The people here are great and the beer is always.

Yelp
It is my fault for coming to a German restaurant and ordering a burger. I was looking for a burger, and there really wasn't a lot open mid day during the week. At least not the day I was here. Student Prince was near my hotel and the reviews were good. Didn't find much about the burger, but they had two on their lunch menu, so thought it would be a good option. I ordered their Haus Cheeseburger sans the garlic aioli and asked for mustard instead. I also went with the tots instead of fries. It came out and looked very impressive. The tots were great. In my opinion, tots are hard to beat. The burger was disappointing. It had caramelized onion on it, that were completely unseasoned, the burger patty was greatly under seasoned, the bacon was sparse and SO thin that it added absolutely nothing to the overall sandwich. I ordered the burger medium and though it was technically correct, it was over cooked on one side and under on the other. The cheddar cheese was placed on the undercooked side and wouldn't melt. Luckily I could pull it away and add some salt to the meat to give it a little something. The service was really friendly and they had tables set up outside which was nice. The weather was perfect to enjoy the outdoors and it was really dark inside. I have coworkers who love this place...but they go on about the German food. So, don't be like me and order the burger.

Yelp
Great food. Got chicken schnitzel ceasar salad and german sampler with brat, smoked pork chop and beef goulash. Blonde beer was good too. I gotta come back and try the other foods.
google avatar

Yelp
The Student Prince, a German-American restaurant does what you expect, a variety of Schnitzel and Braised meats, but, damn, they do it well! The service? Top notch with friendly servers. And the atmosphere is beautiful old school German, with wood paneling, steins and more. All in all, a really good place... if there were more menu selections, there would be a fifth star.

Kathleen W.

Yelp
The food is wonderfully old world, as is the decor! We enjoy the various schnitzels every time we go, and it's always like a trip to grandma's house with the steins, etc. Service is attentive without being intrusive. They have room for our entire family, which is a plus.
google avatar

Jonathan F.

Yelp
Awesome experience. I had the Wedge salad and veal shank and both were fabulous!!! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area!
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
Went for lunch the other day at the Student Prince. The food was excellent. They have a luncheon special for $23.99. We opted for that and I had a cup of Goulash which was excellent. Next I had the Paprika schnitzel, you could have chicken , pork or veal. I had the pork and finally dessert , Apple strudel. There was not one complaint. The service was excellent and our waiter couldn't have been more helpful. The restaurant was clean, and inviting. The only complaint was the cost of the drinks. 16.50 for a Lemon Drop was rather high. So yes I will return but minus the drink.
google avatar

Yelp
What a fun spot! A friend recommended this place to me while on a work trip. I happily went for lunch and did the 3 course lunch special! The service and ambiance of this place is bar none! What a great find! First I had the Goulash for a started, it had a wonderful taste to it...so so flavorful!! For my main course I got the Veal Kaiser Schnitzel, as good as it tastes in Germany!! For dessert I had the Sticky Toffee Pudding, was a recommendation from the waitress, I'm so glad I listened to her. It was to die for! I highly recommend this spot! 10/10!! Prost!

Yelp
I've been going to the Fort for over 50 years and never in that time thought about writing this kind of review. I drove over two hours for to sole purpose of going to the Fort. The Fried Cheese to start was good, as always. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for my entré, the Jaeger Schnitzel. The spätzle was salty and over spiced. The schnitzel was not good cut of veal and the gravy was a bland generic brown gravy, not the hunter's gravy from past years. I guess my question revolves around whether the long-time recipes from the Fort still exist and if they do why are they not followed. Yes, the ambience is still great as are the waitstaff. I just seems that the food quality standards have slipped dramatically. I certainly hope they can get their mojo back.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
Such an iconic location. It's like having fine German fare and drink inside a cool museum. A group of 6 of us savored every bite of our schnitzel and goulash. Our waitress was outstanding in her knowledge of the menu and the interesting history of the establishment. Can't wait to go back next time in Spfld.

Phil E.

Yelp
Very large dining spaces, decorated typically German. Quality food, particularly the sauerkraut, red cabbage and spaetzle. Wish they offered a smaller sausage sampler dish. Recommended.

Yelp
Student Prince had been a favorite for most of my life. For me, 40 years ago it was the place to get good European beer. Now it's a good place to satisfy my German food craving. Having worked in Germany, I can tell you the food is not as good as top restaurants in Germany. However, the food is good and it keeps me coming back. The menu contains the usual German options we find locally. At last visit, my wife raved about the short ribs. My adult daughters and I had three different versions of schnitzel. My veal was fork tender. The interior decor makes you think of a German restaurant. Lots of great stuff to look at on the walls. The waitstaff is friendly , but were stretched thin the night we were there. The hostess felt she had to lie to us a couple times concerning why we weren't being seated until 40 minutes after our reservation. Valet parking guys were great. Use them as parking is a bear in this neighborhood. Summary: good beer, good schnitzel!
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Step into history. If a restaurant could talk I'd want to hear what this one has to say the most. The decor on the walls, on the ceiling and in the cabinets were mesmerizing. Honestly they should give tours of the place. Valet parking was a breeze, the guys were really helpful, parking would be daunting. The bar was very lively, live music tons of beer options, I stopped counting the taps. Very good vibe. Our dinner for 11 was flawless. Everyone loved the food, special mention to the rogfort cheese dressing (spelling?) They make it at your table, it's like nothing I've ever had. So good. Waiter was a ham, loved him. Ok now for the problems. It's too far away from us to make it a frequent visit. Unfair.

KC K.

Yelp
Such a great find in the heart of downtown Springfield Everything was delicious from start to finish. Potato pancakes, goulash, Rüben Sandwich, Schnitzel Sandy . And the grand finale was Apple Strudel with ice cream. Our waitress Stephanie was amazing. Very attentive and friendly. We even got a bit of information on this historical restaurant. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Caroline C.

Yelp
My family and I visited this restaurant a few years back, and I was excited to come back. During our previous visit, I felt cramped and very much packed in with my family and other guest. This time, I was initially pleased to see that we would not be crammed into the sand little corner. Despite making a reservation far in advance, we where crammed in a long table in a hallway. Our waitress was very attentive. I love the big pretzel and the desert menu.

John G.

Yelp
Interesting menu. I had a filet special that was better than the $75 dollar filet at mgm. Staff were attentive and friendly. The decor is something out of the 70s but it's pretty cool.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Didn't seem there was much choice in downtown Springfield. Wow...great spot, great vibe and really amazing food! Had the pork chop w/sauerkraut and potatoes. Maybe the best I ever had, and the price was very reasonable. Guys behind the bar were attentive and actually talked during my visit. 3 thumbs up!!!
google avatar

Debra L.

Yelp
Restaurant is a institution in Springfield. Wonderful menu of German food. Service is exceptional and great alcohol choice (German Beers) If in Springfield you should eat at the Fort (What Springfield people call the restaurant)

John B.

Yelp
A national treasure. You won't find a more authentic or historic German restaurant in New England. Superior food and taplist, with one-of-a-kind decorations. Shelley was an outstanding server.

Gwen S.

Yelp
Shellie was the best waitress ever. The inside was super cool. The food was amazing, especially the schnitzel with paprika sauce. I definitely want to come back, they are super warm and welcoming and great food.
google avatar

Mitch K.

Yelp
What a nice restaurant! They offer valet parking which is great and the restaurant itself has a cool German vibe. We were seated fairly close to our reservation time and had wonderful meals. I wish I had posted this review back in September when we went as I would have remembered the names of the dishes we had, but seriously, if you're in the area definitely check it out. Make a reservation though as the place is busy.
google avatar

Ronna I.

Yelp
This restaurant is located in the downtown area on a street closed off to traffic. We had an early dinner around five on a Thursday, and there was ample nearby street parking. The restaurant offers valet parking. They have a large outdoor space that is in the street and inside seating. The outside has a canopy and is nicely decorated. I had the veal schnitzel with the mushroom gravy, and it complemented the schnitzel. It was a large piece of meat. My husband had the lamb shank and that was very good too. The fried Camembert cheese appetizer was good but not exceptional. Service was good.
google avatar

Theresa C.

Yelp
We stopped here after visiting the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. If we didn't have such a long drive ahead of us, I would have been more adventurous and tried a cup of the goulash or one of the many German dishes on the menu. Instead, I had the cheeseburger which was good, prepared as I requested. The rolls they brought out while we waited were fluffy, light goodness.
google avatar

Alexander K.

Yelp
Fanatic food and great service! I had a great meal. I especially appreciated the complementary valet parking.

John D.

Yelp
My father used to take me here before he died for my birthday, one of the best steakhouses in the state/ possibly on this coast lol
google avatar

Kai W.

Yelp
From exceptional to average. I was encouraged by the Yelp reviews, so I I ordered 4 lunch sandwiches to go. Quality and quantity did not meet my expectations. I suppose I should have ordered from the dinner menu and left it at that.
google avatar

Joyce K.

Yelp
The atmosphere and decor was one of the most unique I've ever seen - felt like I was transported to a traditional Germany restaurant! And the food was *Chef's kiss* amazing. We split the German sampler appetizer, which I'd recommend as a way to try multiple appetizers at once! The Brussels sprouts and giant pretzel were my favorite parts. When it came to the main dishes, I was debating between the Schnitzel or the Hungarian beef goulash, and ended up going with the goulash. It did not disappoint! The beef was so flavorful and hearty, and the sides (sauerkraut and red cabbage) were super yummy as well! The only downside is that this place is very not vegetarian-friendly. My vegetarian friend asked for a vegetarian pasta dish we had seen on a prior menu, and it ended up being essentially Mac & cheese with some Brussels sprouts on top - so unauthentic! That was disappointing but our waiter was very nice, and removed that dish from the bill.
google avatar

Krisztian Z.

Yelp
I hate to give 3 stars. People are nice. Beer is good. Sides are good. But the snitzel is just not crunchy. Had it twice. Never crispy. Too bad. Gotta make it in hot oil. Just YouTube it.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
The food is not good! But maybe all German food is bad. I don't remember it being bad like this when I lived there. The one thing Germans do right is cabbage and bread. The cabbage and kraut were terrible, worse than anything you'd find in a can from Aldi. I sent two dishes back. The pretzel was damn good and this is why I left 3 stars. Piping hot. I would say go for the company. People at the bar were super nice. Great selection of beer and German and Austrian wine. They could've had some German music playing. Also the staff needs to seriously learn a few words in German. Basic pronunciation would level this place up.

Yelp

Yelp
A delicious lunch at the Student Prince. A big thanks to Shellie our waitress, gracious and friendly. When we ask for suggestions, everything she suggested was a hit. We left the restaurant very happy and satisfied. A cozy restaurant ambiance.

Yelp
Great pork and or lamb knuckle. As good as I have gotten in Cologne. Place can be loud. One time we were right in front of the band.
google avatar

Philip J. H.

Yelp
Mind you tonight (also another one two weeks away) will have what's called a "Hunter's Dinner" & I preordered my spot, went & I'm gonna say everything I had (including leftovers of dessert) is worth it. Nevertheless in February they have game meats which normally you wouldn't have unless you were in the mood or something but even if you come here for another Germany/Bolivarian dinner I'l say no disappointment unless you decide the wrong item or something. Now photos which I am presenting are from the dinner tonight & few other things but overall I hope that what I mentioned helps out. Oh in the meantime meal there was a rabbit one & forgot to take the picture-MY BAD!
google avatar

Sherry S.

Yelp
Hard to find a good German restaurant now days but this is it! Wonderful staff and atmosphere. We ate early so it wasn't crowded yet. The food was great! Nice portions and hot! Every thing was delicious! I'm already making plans to go there again! As we left the bar was packed, but sadly we had an early wake up so we couldn't join the festivities. Till the next time!

Yelp
My husband and I are frequent diners and we love the place which made it easy for me to choose the Student Prince for my husband's surprise 70th birthday party. Lexi, Jeff, Shelly and Stephanie made this experience amazing. Lexi accommodated me with anything I asked for and was patient with all my phone calls lol . The food, of course was amazing as usual . But what I would like to highlight is the fantastic service from Jeff, Shelly and Stephanie. Jeff was right there making sure everything that I requested was taken care of. He kept the party rolling, I know Jeff has been there for many many years. And he is great at what he does. But this experience will leave a lasting memory for my husband and myself. Thank you thank you thank you.

Yelp
Had lunch - cool old world vibe. Was expecting a diverse German Wine list so that was disappointing. Service was fine. Food was good. I was hoping for more but it was OK.

Yelp
Omg what a WONDERFUL experience! The food was AWESOME! The atmosphere was AWSOME! The decor was AWESOME! Our waiter, Patrick, was AWESOME, kind, and very helpful. We all, 5 of us, enjoyed everything that was ordered and enjoyed everything we poked from family members plates. The restaurant and bathrooms were all clean and the outdoor seating was so pretty and well done. We all agreed we will be back for dinner and try other dishes. Thank you! And the history of the area was ... AWESOME!!

Yelp
I have been here a couple times for some events I have held there. They can accommodate large parties which is great. There is a full bar and lots of space. During the holidays they do change their menu though. I always get their potato pancakes and a salmon salad. They decorate for holidays as well. Make sure you have a reservation before going because it will get crowded fast.

Johnmichael P.

Yelp
We celebrated my wife's birthday. The food and the service were outstanding. I have been going here since 1975 and they never disappoint me. If you like German cuisine they do a fantastic job. They make a great steak dinner.
