New Orleans Dessert Shop Sucre Reopens Under New Owners | Eater New Orleans

"I'm reporting that Sucre, the popular boutique bakery at 3025 Magazine Street, is reopening tomorrow, December 5, under new owner Ayesha Motwani alongside executive pastry chef Ashley McMillan — Motwani purchased Sucre’s name and recipes (Sucre NOLA LLC appears registered to her husband Aaron Motwani). McMillan, who previously served as Sucre’s sous chef and then head chef, is reviving the macarons, king cake, cupcakes, and gelato the chain became known for; sneak peeks on Sucre’s Instagram include Hanukkah-themed mini macarons, confetti cake, and croissants. The original storefront first opened in 2007 and became popular for its macarons and other Instagrammable confections, eventually expanding with two more shops and Salon by Sucre in the French Quarter, before abruptly closing all locations in June 2019 after a year of trying and failing to bring the company to financial profitability; co-founder and executive pastry chef Tariq Hanna resigned in 2018 amid allegations of sexual misconduct but retained partial ownership. Owners say they are reviving a beloved New Orleans classic, transformed as a destination dessert and coffee boutique with a sophisticated new atmosphere; coffee and espresso drinks will be made with local Congregation Coffee and all sweets and baked goods will be prepared on site at the renovated store. Sucre will open at 7 a.m. daily and operate until 10 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 11 p.m. Friday–Saturday, and 9 p.m. on Sunday." - Clair Lorell

New Orleans’s Sucre Will Reopen Under Motwani Family | Eater New Orleans

"A once-popular boutique dessert shop that opened in 2007 on Magazine Street, I knew Sucre for its macarons and other picture-perfect confections; it expanded to two more shops and a French Quarter restaurant, Salon by Sucre, but abruptly closed all locations in June 2019. The shutdown followed a NOLA.com report revealing that co-founder Tariq Hanna had resigned in August 2018 after allegations of sexual misconduct—Hanna remained a partial owner—and the company said it was closing after a year of failing to reach financial profitability, with later bankruptcy filings showing declining sales amid mounting expenses. Company records list Aaron Motwani as the current owner, known for his fried-chicken-and-daiquiri chain Willie's Chicken Shack and his family's large French Quarter real estate holdings. An Instagram story announcing the relaunch says Sucre will reopen in its original Magazine Street location on December 1, 2020, transformed into a "destination dessert and coffee boutique with a sophisticated new atmosphere" led by Ayesha Motwani and executive pastry chef Ashley McMillan, who previously worked as Sucre’s executive pastry chef." - Clair Lorell

Disappointing! The girls that work here are sooooo nice! But the desserts were mediocre. The macaron was nice but I’ve had better, but the lavender citron cake was bad. It didn’t taste like lavender at all despite being bright purple and the citrus was so weak. It wasn’t even a good lemon cake, it was just bland and sweet. The space is so cute, it’s a shame the desserts aren’t worth the visit.

I had no idea Sucre was still open in the city and Im glad I found out because I haven't been to one in years. The macaroons and gelato are still there and they still make some of the best Coffee Drinks in the city. The location is walkable and there was ample parking.

Bill Y.

Google
Sucré’s macaron was a bit over-the-top sweet— even compared to the big-league sweethearts like Ladurée (which already flirts with too sweet) and Pierre Hermé (who knows how to walk the fine line IMHO). If Ladurée is a gentle kiss and Hermé a flirtatious wink, Sucré threw herself at you (Madame, un peu de retenue, s’il vous plaît) 😀.

Google
Good selection of macaroons and Gelato. Friendly and quick service. It is fairly priced for a touristy area of NOLA. Plenty of space to sit down and enjoy a sweet treat.

Google
Cute spot, but the cake was way too sweet for our sweet tooth. Great little joint for the gram if you’re into that sort of thing. There was no one at this particular location for some reason. While the other ones in FQ were pretty packed. Someone on the streetcar mentioned to pronounce this as “soo-kccchhhhhraaaaay”. Hope I got it right.

Google
The most darling sweet shop you could want to find! Staff was super friendly and helpful. They were genuinely excited to tell me about all of the different sweets offered, at 10pm, no less! The Macarons, cupcakes, and brownies were as delicious as they were pretty!! Try the Almond gelato! A must see in the French Quarter!!

Google
My hubby is still talking about the cookie he had from this place. He got the mudslide cookie which is a cross between a brownie and a cookie…gotta love food science! Yes the cookie was $6, but it’s hard to put a price on my husband’s happiness. Gotta live it up in New Orleans! NOLA!!!

Google
Meh…doesn’t take cash which is a huge turn off. Why be in business if you’re scared of cash. Makes things cheaper in the long run too! We left and a complete stranger ran us down and said we could use their credit/debit card so the kids could get something. Embarrassing and awkward but the girl behind the counter said that was normal. I gave them the cash and they used their card. The kids got a giant chocolate chip cookie and brownie and I tried a piece and they were awful, way too sweet and a weird sweetness at that. The kids liked it naturally. Prices were stupid high too. Won’t go back.

Yelp
We found this place on a whim. This place was absolutely amazing. I can't put into words how good everything was. Cheesecake - I've never had a cheesecake literally melt in my mouth. Absolutely delightful. Key lime pie - The key lime wasn't too overpowering which I am not a big fan of key lime but it was really good. Brown Butter Pecan Gelato - I love butter pecan ice cream and this did not disappoint Confetti Ice Gelato - the creaminess of this gelato is a 10 outta 10. Madelines - Hands down the best madelines I've ever had. If you find one of the places - you will NOT be disappointed.

Yelp
Interior 5/5 Presentation 5/5 Service 5/5 Drinks 1/5 Pastries 1/5 Price 2.5/5 Simply put Sucre is a cute place with a great ambiance yet disappointing drinks and food. The price for the pastries were very high yet the taste was stale and disheartening, the drinks were nothing special flavorless and unsweetened. Overall it was not a great experience but the service was good and it did look very cute.
google avatar

Anokhy D.

Yelp
Great flavor options but truly the most underwhelming macarons in town. The texture was hard and flaky, and didn't have that signature macaron chewiness, and every macaron and patisserie available was sprayed with luster dust or had gold flake. Great for aesthetics but that's about it.
google avatar

Jarenn N.

Yelp
Super cute and aesthetic! The macarons were yummy and beautifully packaged. Friendly service and they have a restroom if needed. Lots of seating inside and out!
google avatar

Yelp
Macarons, chocolates, cakes, coffees, and gelato (amongst other sweets) - in an adorable package, and even more charming and delightful shoppe. What is there not to love? The smell when you walk in is heavenly, if only they could bottle that.... the service is super friendly, helpful, and patient - especially when you're literally a "kid in a candy store" and you're having to make selections (as opposed to getting one of everything). If only it was calorie free... but as a treat and in moderation this place is faaaaaabulous! So glad they re-opened!

Yelp
I feel like I'm in France. The music is delightful. This location is great, New Orleans Garden District. They offer wonder coffee varietals, beauteous desserts, from French macarons to Panna cotta treats. They have several flavors of gThe ambiance and service is wonderful. The decor is French bakery stunning. Enjoying all this deliciousness.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute classy dessert shop with delicious beautiful desserts. The ladies serving were so sweet even giving us suggestions on what to see or where to visit. We got a Pink Lady which was a delicious strawberry panned cotta like cake with white chocolate. Also got a chocolate chip cookie which was crisp yet moist, as well as a refreshing cool latte. After walking the Garden District neighborhood definitely stop here to satisfy your sweet tooth.
google avatar

Yanette D.

Yelp
The macaroons were excellent. The tart was delicious however the piece of white chocolate and the cream on top of the tart tasted like it had been refrigerated for a while. The tart itself was great.
google avatar

Jared B.

Yelp
I had the triple chocolate gelato. They allow you to try to samples before you decide which helped. The portion was a good size and tasted great. Would come back.
google avatar

Yelp
While walking Magazine Street, my friend and stopped in for a sweet, cold treat - and I am so so glad we did! I opted for the confetti ice cream - and it literally tasted like a delicious cake batter that hadn't been baked yet. And it had cake pieces throughout - it was divine. My friend got the blackberry basil sorbet and she enjoyed it - said the basil flavor was very subtle. Then, we both topped our treat with a macaron - because they looked too good to pass up!

Yelp
I don't like going into places that seem to fancy especially with 5 children. However my husband convinced me and I'm so thankful they did. The atmosphere is very chill and the staff are very nice and polite. The maroons were delicious and the gelato was great flavor. I ordered a pink lady Togo.
google avatar

Ivy B.

Yelp
This is an adorable European bakery serving macarons, gelato and elegant desserts. I tried a couple macarons and a cookies and cream cupcake, both which were exquisite. The macarons were rich enough to hit the spot and the cupcake was light and airy enough that it didn't feel heavy and dense. I know this is supposed to be a specialty shop, but I felt like the price point is a little too high for what it is. Service was also a little slow as only one person seemed to be working the dessert case.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place out but the line was always out the door. We came by around early afternoon for a little goûter. When it was our turn to order, the associates asked if it was our first time and really went I to depth on their menu. The one associate (curly hair and glasses) was extremely bubbly and so sweet! I wanted to try some new things here so I ordered the strawberry layered cake and the Lavender London Fog latte. The flavor of the cake and the tea was exactly what everyone needs in the afternoon. Once we got our order I asked for a cup of warm water to warm up my daughters bottle and again, they were so attentive and helpful. I cannot recommend this place enough! The flavors were amazing, the staff was extremely nice and helpful and the overall place was such a great spot! Can't wait to be come back and now I know why there's always a line!

Yelp
Everything here is so pleasing to the eye. The pastries, the cute serving plates, the décor. And it tastes great too! Layered Cake: Very fancy looking cake. Loved the rich berry frosting layer against the fluffy cake layers. And the ornate decorations were just so fancy looking. Bread Pudding: Apparently they can warm this up for you, which makes it truly awesome. The caramel on top melts and the bread pudding gets warm and moist. It's kinda small by bread pudding standards, but it's the perfect way to get a delicately sized taste. Strawberry Macaron: Love how the external shell cracks while still soft underneath. And the strawberry filling is quite refreshing. Blackberry Citrus Macaron: Seemed a little more subtle in flavor than the strawberry, but quite delicious too. Salted Caramel Macaron: Love the caramel filling and how it pairs with the crusty macaron shell.

Yelp
Sweet treats with great selection, the space is so beautiful with a softly painted be pink and rich accents I recommend stopping over while strolling down magazine street to enjoy some of the delicious ice cream and cupcakes available.

Yelp
Loved, loved, LOVED this little gem!! The place itself was lovely!! Ot was like walking into a little corner cafe in France. Brought back memories. It's simple yet elegant design was refreshing. It was also immaculate! Which pulled together the clean crisp look. The two young ladies who worked there were BEYOND sweet and helpful! They allowed us to try all of the flavors we wanted and couldn't have been more courteous. We decided on a vanilla, a cafe au lait, a cookies and cream, and a red velvet cupcake. (There were 4 of us) All of these were DELICIOUS!! The gelato here is truly fantastic! Hubby and grandson devoured the cupcake as well. Even our VERY picky eater 3 year old grand ate her gelato!! Which was honestly a surprise. She barely eats anything and doesn't like ice cream! She refused to let us even sit it in the table at one point! lol Anyway, This little peaceful spot should be a must if you're in the area. It will become a regular stop for us from now on as well.

Yelp
We had a great time checking out Sucre and having some macarons and a cheesecake. It's so pretty inside and the staff were all so friendly. Definitely worth checking out again.

Yelp
What a gorgeous little slice of fancy French paradise! We stopped in during a marathon shopping session and loved their ice cream and macarons. Next time we have to try more of their pastries, they all looked delicious!
google avatar

Vy D.

Yelp
We stopped in to grab some sweet treats! This store is located in the heart of the French Quarters and was a beautiful shop. The shop is beautiful, cozy, and inviting! They have various pastries, treats, gelato, and products that you can purchase. I only tried the macarons and some of the cakes. They had a special going on if you buy a certain amount of treats, you get a discounted tote bag, which was adorable! Everything tasted good, it was just a bit expensive for the little pastries. Everything was made well and tasted great, I would recommend for the sweet treats if you're looking for unique treats and something tasty. Prices are a bit expensive but overall it was a good experience. Staff was nice, they let us try gelato flavors and answered all the questions that we had! They're really helpful and very nice.
google avatar

Yelp
The macaroons are made perfect. Text book. The flavors are great and get rotated for new ones periodically. Never had anything else from there though it all looks delicious. Live and die by the macaroons.
google avatar

Charles H.

Yelp
"Okay" Under the new ownership, Sucre is a poor imitation of the original outstanding sweet shop. Besides their standard macaroons they really don't offer anything that's special anymore. Most locals have migrated to "Piety and Desire" about 8 blocks downriver.
google avatar

Stella A.

Yelp
We just passed by the shop and were captured by the aesthetic decorations and pretty sweets, so we decided to give it a try. We ordered their falling praline and we didn't really like it, too sweet and the texture combinations were weird (still coarse on the inside). The place had nice ambiance though :) Card was accepted.

Yelp
Sucré is a lovely pastry and coffee shop in New Orleans. The pastries were freshly made and tasted heavenly, with just the right amount of sweetness. The coffee was also excellent, with a rich and full-bodied flavor. The ambiance of the shop was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect place to relax and unwind. The only downside was that the prices were a bit on the higher side. Overall, I highly recommend Sucré to anyone who appreciates delicious treats!
google avatar

Kritika S.

Yelp
What's not to love !!! Loved all the desserts that I tried. Such a chic shop with perfect ambiance.
google avatar

Alauna A.

Yelp
Sucré is a nice spot to hit up when hungry for a yummy dessert. Two individuals were working and they were very kind/friendly. Their blender was unfortunately broken/not available, so I wasn't able to purchase a milkshake. Not a huge deal, so I went with a small cup of XXX gelato and one of the salted caramel macaroons - delicious! For those two items, it rang around eight bucks which isn't terrible.
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
Sucre used to be absolutely wonderful, but now both locations always smell like someone passed gas (bacteria? Cleaning problem?) and the quality of the product has become quite hit and miss. On a recent visit the Gelato I ordered to pair with my other item had frost all over it and did not taste fresh. To sum, it's fallen on hard times and is sorely in need of new ownership and/or management.
google avatar

Sandra K.

Yelp
Slow service but nice workers. Desserts were pretty except this yuzu almond cake mess. That did not have great flavor and was way too sweet.
google avatar

Jayme B.

Yelp
We stopped in here as we were walking down Magazine street because my friends know I love a sweet shop. We stopped in on a Friday afternoon and there was hardly anyone in there. We were greeted warmly as soon as we walked in. My goal was trying to fly some sweets back home with me and the staff recommended getting some macarons to take home. They said they would box them well and that they travel well. I ordered 4 macarons and a few other pastries to share with my friends. We ate the s'mores skillet later that evening... and whew it was so good! Not overly sweet and great textures. They also serve gelato and allow you to sample a couple of flavors before you make your selection. I sampled the mango and birthday cake and both were so good! Besides having yummy treats, I really like the vibe and aesthetic of this place. Check this place out if you're in NOLA!
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
This is such a cute ice cream shop right across from the carousel bar. The ambiance is bright and there's seating in the back. They had great service too helping us try a couple samples before choosing the right ice cream flavors

Suzette N.

Yelp
I walked into the Royal St. location with two friends. We ordered two scoops of ice cream. I went to pay with a gift card and was told y'all are no longer accepting gift card. What!? The server gave me a business card and told me to contact management. And so I tried. The business card has a customer service business taking 'texts'! and a QR code leading to their website that's about as helpful as sign on the door! I was appalled. Absolutely no way to actually speak with a person. But I digress. Since I could not pay with the GC, I pull out cash. Oops! You don't take cash! This was the hardest I've ever had to work to actually pay a business. And then the staff- we were discussing macarons in general and a member of your staff butted in our conversation to disrespect a competitor. Sorry, we did not ask her opinion. And then to criticize a competitor? What happened to 'if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all'? On the plus side, the location was aesthetically pleasing. But, I am still very disappointed that my gift from a dear friend has become useless.
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
I had 1 cupcake and that was the Oreo chocolate. I very much liked the airy-ness about it. Wasn't too dense. Light and fluffy actually. The cream icing was tasteful but not overly powerful. Being as though it's a one of a kind place I'd like to see them go more bold with their flavors. Even more rich! Still an awesome date spot for dessert; night or day!
google avatar

Tara K.

Yelp
Stopped by to grab a quick coffee and use the restroom while we were walking along Magazine st. This was first time at this location, I had been to the one that was in the French Quarter years ago, I remembered the Gelato was good. This location is beautiful, the selection of pastries and Gelato was very tempting and beautiful. Like I said, we just stopped for coffee, so I can't speak to how they taste.

E S.

Yelp
Service: wonderful, so polite and helpful and you can ask for gelato samples. Ambiance: SO cute and IG/TikTok worthy because of the beautiful, clean decor. Very light pink, and just precious! The pastries (macaroon, eclair, cookies and brownies) look like you wouldn't even want to eat them because they're so pretty! The macaroons and eclairs even sparkle!! Food: We got raspberry and mango gelato, as we are dairy free and wanted something water based. Mango is light in flavor and really good, raspberry is a bit stronger in flavor and really good as well. We sampled the coffee one and the almond one, both really really good! Don't miss out on the beautiful Sucre!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Stumbled across this dessert shopping in New Orleans walking around. It was very expensive but it was absolutely delicious and beautiful. We tried this Moore's dessert and it was wonderful very decadent and pretty large for the serving size. We also try to French macron that was also good... They have so many desserts to choose from and it's definitely worth a stop.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here on a whim. Was literally just walking down the street and found this amazing gem! The desserts are divine! Not only visually appeasing but they taste delicious!! Lots of dessert options. Macaroons, chocolate, pastries, you name it! Pretty glad I was here visiting because I am pretty sure I would be here all the time! I will definitely be back if I go back to visit! There are tables inside which is nice. Ambience is cool. Walked here so didn't have to worry about parking but seems like street parking is the only option.
google avatar

Kierstin D.

Yelp
Super cute spot to pick up some sweet treats! We stopped by here to get some gelato and macaroons. I loved the light pastel detailing all through the little shop in addition to all the plants and marble. It felt very inviting and Instagrammy in the best way! They let me sample the different flavors of gelato before picking one and happily answered all questions. Everything we got tasted amazing! I cannot wait to return and try some of the other goodies they had there!
google avatar

Yelp
So glad they recovered from the whole sexual harassment issues from several years ago. Kudos to the new owners. Sucre has always been a delightful shop. The ambiance, from the decor to the packaging (bags and boxes), is top notch! The service today was excellent. I'm sorry that I didn't get the team member's name, but she was bubbly, knowledgeable and personable. She appears to be passionate about her work. She's a great salesperson without being pushy. When I inquired about a pastry, she described it with so much passion and authenticity. Full transparency, I wasn't a fan of the gelato when the original shop opened many years ago. I thought it was ok and overpriced. I didn't have gelato today, but macarons instead. I also bought a chocolate chip cookie and a cookies n cream cupcake. The cookie was good, crispy around the edges and chewy in the center. It's not worth $5, though. This isn't a Levain Bakery cookie. Sadly, the cupcake was just ok. I've had the same quality from Rouses. I dare say it's about what you'd get from Sam's, but at ten times the cost ($6.00). It's a jumbo cupcake, but I recommend getting your cupcake fix at Cupcake Collection down the street. The macarons, however, were the highlight of the day. I ordered blackberry, almond, vanilla and strawberry. With the exception of the vanilla, the flavors were spot on. They were delicious. The flavor of the vanilla was muted, but were vibrant for the remaining flavors. The almond was my favorite. I love almost anything with almond cream, extract, etc. The macarons were pretty and shiny, and had a light, crispy texture. I appreciated the additional layer of crunch these had. I'm not a macaron connoisseur, so I don't know what the texture should be like, but I tried some from Haydel's (a block away) and O'Delice today and Sucre was the best, hands down. The creamy filling was fruity and tasty. Also, Sucre sold them for $2.75 ea, while they were $2.50 and $1.79 ea from Haydel's and O'Delice, respectively. If you buy 8 macarons from Sucre, they come in the cutest gift box. It's a no-brainer. I'll gladly pay more because Sucre is an experience. The other places don't come close in terms of service, ambiance and quality.

Yelp
The treats were beautiful. The staff lovely. The space itself was charming. It was a refreshing treat on a warm day.

Yelp
Nothing says love like a box of macarons, partially due to the care and dedication taken to make these fine confections as well as the price that a company is that level of detail. Recently in New Orleans with my wife, I decided that we needed to stop here for a quick treat after dinner. My wife loves macarons and I knew she would like these. We were able to get to the shop just before they closed and apologize profusely to the one behind the counter and she was very pleasant and made us feel like we were not a bother, although I felt enough of a bother to leave an extra generous tip because I remember my retail days and hated the people that would come in right before closed and keep you late. We got a mixed box to have, some that night, some of the next day. And they were all delicious. If you ever need an apology, thank you gift for someone who's helped you out, or just a show of affection, this place is a good stop to consider as you will not be disappointed here.
google avatar

Yelp
Appropriately named patisserie as New Orleans has got to be the city with the sweetest tooth in the US. But have you ever had sweets that sparkle like gold?! I felt like I was eating treasure! What a lovely experience. Thank You!
google avatar

Mohamed E.

Yelp
Macrons were just amazing, especially the salted caramel, staff were friendly and helpful

Austin R.

Yelp
Vanilla cheesecake was quite Devine especially with the layer of white chocolate around it. Cheesecake was very moist and melted in your mouth. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone in the area. Definitely a five star!!!!
google avatar

Karla S.

Yelp
Gelatos and macarons galore! Great macaron selection - salted caramel was scrumptious. The butter pecan gelato was beyond delicious! Great spot for a sweet treat as you spend the day exploring French Quarter.
google avatar

Yelp
Super whimsical place loved the Bread pudding and the price was reasonable staff was super friendly there's no parking so be prepared but overall amazing food thank you for everything!

Yelp
The food was delicious and beautifully displayed. Such a nice aesthetic of pastel pink and clean modern white everywhere. They change the window displays depending on the season or holiday. The employees were nice and gave nice suggestions. I did not try many things but the things I did cured my sweet tooth!

Rowan L.

Yelp
My best friend bought a box for me as a welcome home present and I absolutely adore them. The packaging, the glitter detailing, as well as the delicious flavors tie it all together! My favorite is the strawberry because it tastes natural, and is sweet, and I love the pink glitter!!
google avatar

Tom P.

Yelp
While in New Orleans we stumbled upon this really upscale sweet shop. The selections were so hard to choose from so we may have went several times. The Macaroons were so tasty and the flavors were spot on. Several flavors of Gelato to choose from. If your in town this is a must hit to curb your sweet tooth.
google avatar

Siobhan L.

Yelp
The buttercream is incredible!! Not too sweet & the glitter makes everything so much fun to eat ~ the cake itself could be better but ultimately I'd recommend !!
google avatar

Philip L.

Yelp
Great to see this New Orleans business come back, and we usually come here for gifts to bring back. The pastel chocolate covered nuts look great, and the praline pecan tins are also nice. Love the light green paper gift bags too. The king cake is the best in the city (and the most beautiful too), hopefully next time we are in town during the Mardi Gras season. Sucre has the whole package for the sweet tooth - quality, flavor, and beautiful presentation.

Yelp
Beautiful place that offers the perfect little something sweet. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Everything made fresh. Magazine street is made better by this place. Highly recommend the almond macaroon and the warm brownie is a euphoric surprise. Some of the deserts are true works of art
